Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Three-dimensional (3D) optical imaging and 3D displays have been researched extensively for various applications such as commerce, entertainment, medicine, aerospace, manufacturing, robotics, education, security, and defense. The capabilities provided by advances in 3D imaging and 3D displays have substantially enhanced the status of these disciplines, enabling new measurements, detection, visualization, and display abilities that would not have been otherwise possible. For example, 3D medical imaging is an emerging technology with great potential for improving disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in the medical office, at the bedside, or in the operating room.

It is clear that to obtain high-performance 3D displays, especially vivid 3D spatial displays, there are still lots of challenges in different display technologies. No display method is without its problems or limitations. The autostereoscopic display is a more mature display technique that can offer a 3D effect for only a certain watching region, with the limit of lenticular screen production techniques and the limited viewing area and resolution of flat panel displays are still challenges to a bigger number of views in autostereoscopic displays. Volumetric displays, although the only spatial display technique that can offer real full parallax 3D scenes in all directions, have a non-occultation effect that limits their application.

This Special Issue will focus on the latest research achievements in stereographic displays, holographic displays, volumetric displays, and integrated imaging displays. Research on integral imaging, holography, photoacoustic imaging optic-acoustic fusion theories, 3D aerial photography, autostereoscopic 3D display, novel optic-acoustic sensors and equipment, radar imaging, medical imaging, special applications, and imaging technologies are welcome.

Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
