Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nuclear fission energy is a firm low-carbon resource for fighting against climate change, and is suitable to be adopted as the energy source for those difficult-to-decarbonize industrial sectors, including long-distance transportation; shipping; the production of carbon-intensive materials such as steel and cement; the provision of reliable and flexible electricity supply, etc. The three severe nuclear accidents, i.e., the Three Mile Island accident, the Chernobyl accident, and the Fukushima Daiichi accident, indicate that strictly guaranteeing safety is a prerequisite of large-scale deployment and public acceptance of nuclear power. To enhance the safety level of nuclear power plants, extensive research and development (R&D) efforts have been completed on nuclear safety, resulting in a series of remarkable and exciting advances of nuclear power technology, such as the 3rd generation nuclear power plants AP1000 and HPR1000, equipped with a passive decay heat-removing system, as well as the inherently safe modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant HTR-PM, commercially operated since 6 December 2023. Nowadays, given the increasing requirements for multiple unit/modular nuclear power generation and cogeneration, deep load following, flat digital control system, etc., nuclear safety analysis faces some new challenges. Currently, nuclear safety analysis is not only achieved by reactor accident analysis and probability safety analysis (PSA), but also relates to issues such as deep load following, nuclear security, equipment performance, and reliability. These new challenges indicate the intention of arranging this Special Issue.

The topics of this Special Issue on “New challenges in Safety Analysis of Nuclear Reactors” include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Accident analysis,
  • Probability safety analysis (PSA),
  • Nuclear security,
  • Digital protection system and safety-level instrumentation,
  • Nuclear power plant control method for enhancing operational stability and reliability,
  • Application of artificial intelligence in nuclear safety analysis, control, and monitoring,
  • Modeling and simulation for safety analysis.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
