Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In response to the imperative to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector and address air quality concerns, regulations related to pollutant emissions and greenhouse gases are driving the development of cleaner and more efficient internal combustion engines. This Special Issue highlights the potential of hydrogen as a practical and sustainable alternative fuel for internal combustion engines (ICEs) to achieve lower emissions and guarantee a more sustainable automotive industry. The interest in sustainable energy solutions has led to significant research and development in the application of hydrogen as a fuel for internal combustion engines. This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to technological breakthroughs and the practical applications of hydrogen in ICEs in order to provide a comprehensive overview of current trends and future directions in this field.

Key topics covered:

Hydrogen as a Sustainable Fuel:

  • Comparative analysis of hydrogen, hydrogen-blend and conventional fuels;
  • Environmental impact and potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Engine Modifications and Technologies:

  • Design modifications required for hydrogen-fueled ICEs;
  • Advances in fuel injection systems, ignition methods, and combustion chambers;
  • Case studies on prototype and commercial hydrogen ICEs.

Combustion Characteristics and Efficiency:

  • Detailed examination of hydrogen combustion properties;
  • Analysis of thermal efficiency and energy conversion rates;
  • Strategies for optimizing engine performance and reducing fuel consumption.

Emissions and Environmental Benefits:

  • Assessment of pollutant emissions from hydrogen ICEs;
  • Comparisons with traditional gasoline and diesel engines;
  • Long-term environmental benefits and regulatory considerations.

Challenges and Solutions:

  • Technical challenges in hydrogen storage and delivery systems;
  • Safety concerns and risk mitigation strategies;
  • Economic and infrastructural hurdles to widespread adoption.

Future Directions and Innovations:

  • Emerging technologies and innovative approaches in hydrogen application;
  • Integration of hydrogen ICEs with renewable energy sources;
  • Prospects for hybrid systems and fuel cell combinations.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
