Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The relationships between urban communities and their landscapes are framed by community as a dynamic field of social interactions bounded by place. Persistent features of local life enable residents to share common interests and pursue collective action towards the improvement of their urban forest and associated environment. However, there is an ongoing need to understand motivations and barriers of resident actions, particularly in terms of negotiating equity, science, and socio-political influences. This Special Issue presents up-to-date research on the interdisciplinary study of resident engagement in the management of their urban greenspaces, including forests, parks, and undeveloped corridors. It aims to gather systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the topic, study protocols, theoretical and/or conceptual papers, and empirical studies. Included studies may be qualitative or quantitative and focused on sociological, psychological, economic, or cultural factors. The study design may vary from secondary data analysis to representative surveys, longitudinal studies, case studies, interviews and focus groups, and evaluation of best practices. Papers can focus on how urban forest environments influence and are influenced by focused human interventions in terms of policy and/or management. The papers can explore these topics from both the perspective of the individual or from a broader societal perspective. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Urban forest equity;
  • Forest planning;
  • Civic science;
  • Participatory research;
  • Environmental education.
