Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Forest resources, such as wood, are the most abundant natural bio-based polymer materials on the earth. They are sustainable and renewable, can be processed into various products such as furniture, buildings, and paper, and are widely applied in our daily life. Forest resources are mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. In the cell walls of wood, cellulose mainly exists as nanofibers and is embedded in hemicellulose and lignin matrixes. Thus, cellulose nanofibers can be obtained after removing the matrixes and disintegrating the wood cell walls. In addition, as natural polymers, various types of nanomaterials can be generated from cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin using different techniques such as electrospinning. With the fast development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, the pursuit for nanomaterials from forest-based resources has gained more and more attention. The as-produced bio-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites have illustrated a big potential as novel advanced materials for applications in many areas.

Hence, this Special Issue of Forests will report research and review articles to promote the development of sustainable bio-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites. We welcome high-quality papers related to forest resource-derived nanomaterials, with a specific focus on cellulose-, hemicellulose-, and lignin-derived nanomaterials and nanocomposites.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
