Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Fractional calculus offers a more accurate description of dynamic processes with memory and hereditary properties, providing advantages over traditional calculus. Modeling with fractional calculus enhances the accuracy of actual complex systems, thereby improving control effectiveness. On the other hand, modern engineering systems are becoming increasingly complex, and traditional centralized control methods struggle to manage this complexity and scale. Distributed control, through the collaborative effort of multiple controllers, disperses the computational and decision-making burdens, thereby enabling the optimization of large-scale systems and enhancing their robustness and fault tolerance. Combining distributed control with fractional calculus presents a viable approach to address control challenges in complex systems, effectively managing large-scale, multi-variable, and strongly coupled systems. Currently, the distributed optimal control of fractional-order systems finds significant applications in various fields, such as networked control systems, smart grids, UAV formations, robotic swarm control, and biomedical engineering.

The primary aim of this Special Issue is to disseminate the latest findings, new research advancements, future trends, and innovations in the distributed control and optimization of fractional-order systems. Both theoretical and experimental research are encouraged. Additionally, high-quality reviews and survey papers are welcome.

The submitted papers may focus on, but are not necessarily limited to, the following areas:

  • Optimal control of fractional-order nonlinear systems;
  • Distributed coordination of fractional-order networked systems;
  • Distributed optimization of fractional-order networked systems;
  • Distributed Nash equilibrium of games between fractional-order networked systems;
  • Fault detection filtering and fault tolerant control of fractional-order networked systems;
  • Safety-critical control of fractional-order cyber-physical systems subject to various network attacks.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fractal and Fractional is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
