Dear Colleagues,

With the rapid development of the modern economy, environmental pollution and ecological damage are becoming increasingly serious, thereby threatening the quality of air, water, and soil, which are crucial for human health. Numerous technologies have contributed to the recent advances in geography and ecology research; geospatial technological developments especially constitute a revolution in these fields. With the advent of multi-scale spatial information in the organization and composition of environmental parameters, the acquisition of spatial information on geographic and ecological environments using geospatial information techniques, such as geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS), has become a common practice. For example, GIS is currently used as a principal tool for the exploration of variation in the environment, as it provides essential toolsets for the collection, management, analysis and visualization of spatial data. As an important technique for broad-scale observations on the land surface, RS has been used to study a wide range of biological problems. With multi-resolution, multi-band and multi-temporal environment information, the evolution of geographic and ecological environment in different time periods can be monitored in great detail. Extensive applications of geospatial technologies, such as fractal theory, GIS and RS in geography, and ecology environment research suggest the necessity of such a collection of innovative studies in these fields.

For mountainous areas in different regions, the study of the spatial coupling relationship between rural settlements and arable land resources is a key aspect of coordinated rural development. In this study, a spatial coupling relationship model and a Geodetector are introduced to explore the spatial coupling relationship and driving factors of rural settlements and arable land in the alpine canyon region. The nearest neighbor index, Voronoi diagram, and landscape pattern index system based on the geographic grid are used to analyze the spatial differentiation characteristics of rural settlements in the alpine canyon region, and the spatial coupling relationship model is introduced to explore the spatial coupling relationship between rural settlements and arable land. Finally, the driving factors of the coupling relationship are detected based on Geodetector. The results show that (1) the spatial distribution of rural settlements in the study area is “T-shaped” with a relatively regular settlement shape; (2) the population in the alpine canyon region is relatively small, and the conflict between people and land is not prominent in most areas, so the overall coupling situation between rural settlements and farming land is dominated by fewer people and more land; and (3) the spatial coupling between rural settlements and arable land in the alpine canyon region is mainly affected by four types of factors: terrain topography, meteorology, soil and population, and economy. The interaction between the factors has a synergistic enhancement effect. The results of the study provide theoretical support for the development of rural settlements in the alpine canyon region. Rural settlements are the spatial carriers of rural multifunctionality, and various issues related to livability are the main manifestations and causes of unbalanced and insufficient rural development. In the new era, it is imperative to promote the livability of rural settlements with the implementation of rural revitalization. However, compared with urban settlements, there are still fewer studies on the livability of rural settlements, especially those in disaster-prone areas; thus, this paper takes the upper reaches of the Minjiang River as the study area. It adopts GIS spatial analysis and the model of minimum cumulative resistance, etc., to conduct a livability evaluation and construct an optimization model by innovatively taking five aspects into account including site security and resource endowment. The results show that: (1) The overall livability of the region is relatively good, and the main factors affecting the livability are site security and economic affluence; (2) The location of rural settlements was highly livability-oriented, and the area of rural settlements in the moderate- and high-livability zones accounted for more than 90%; and (3) The key to improving the livability of rural settlements lies in the construction of development synergy, disaster management, cultural preservation and industrial upgrading, and thus, four types of settlement livability enhancement are proposed. The research results provide theoretical support for the construction of livable villages in the upper reaches of the Minjiang River and similar mountainous areas. Full article
