Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Periodontitis is a relevant public health concern globally. In 2019, there were 1.1 billion cases of severe periodontitis worldwide. The ecological plaque hypothesis proposes that periodontal disease onset is initiated by an imbalance in the proportion of periodontitis-associated bacteria inside the microbial flora, reflecting a condition of dysbiosis in the subgingival microenvironment. Subsequently, improving the early diagnosis of and treatment for periodontitis could help to constrain the systemic impairment that periodontitis can exert.
The treatment of periodontitis involves non-surgical mechanical removal of bacterial biofilm related to inflammation of all supragingival and subgingival surfaces, in addition to regular hygiene performed by the patient, complemented by a professional. For many decades, efforts have been made to improve the efficacy of mechanical treatment by introducing different adjuncts such as the use of antimicrobials at different dosages and routes of administration. Nevertheless, the structural complexity of dental biofilm provides a refuge for many pathogenic bacteria, making delivery to individual microorganisms challenging. Because of this, alternative methods have been explored. These approaches incorporate antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and laser. Moreover, probiotics have appeared as another likely possibility to treat periodontal diseases. Papers focusing on these themes are invited for this Special Issue, specifically those joining a high academic standard coupled with applied attention to offering results with the best available evidence

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
