Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The spectacular development of bioinorganic chemistry over the past few decades has been driven by an increasing understanding of the mechanisms of reactions involving metal complexes in biological systems. At its core lies in-depth research using progressively more precise analytical techniques. However, kinetic studies have always played a primary role, providing information on the energetics of chemical transformations and the nature of transition states. Yet, despite their importance for the development of this and other fields of chemistry, it is difficult not to notice, in recent times, a trend of declining recognition of papers based on the use of the methods of classical chemical kinetics. Firmly convinced of their crucial importance, the International Journal of Molecular Sciences announces a Special Issue dedicated to the “Reaction Kinetics in Bioinorganic Systems”. The main motivation is, first and foremost, the awareness of questions still awaiting answers, concerning, among other things, the reactivity of metalloproteins, the interactions of exogenous metal compounds with cellular targets, or the involvement of small inorganic molecules in important biological processes. New insights into these issues provided by powerful time-resolved tools are, in turn, stimulating the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies, in which kinetic studies play an important role from the synthesis of new preparations and their stability tests through activation and/or the release of the active agent to the stage of stimulation of signaling, remedial, or cell death-inducing mechanisms. In these latter aspects, the more and more frequent use of light as a trigger in novel photomedicine strategies has been observed in recent years. Therefore, we intend to bring together the most recent contributions dealing with both the thermal and photochemical reactivity of metal compounds and small inorganic molecules in model or actual biological systems. You are welcome to submit original and review papers.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
