Dear Colleagues,
The skin, given its considerable extension (the largest of any other organ in the body), together with the microbiota that colonizes it, is a fundamental mediator of the continuous and bidirectional flow of information and metabolites between the human organism and the environment that surrounds it. Much of this flow is in turn under the control of the redox system, which, in the skin, for evolutionary and adaptive reasons, is one of the most developed in the whole organism. The redox system is a biochemical system that allows skin cells to adapt to various stressors, physical (e.g., ultraviolet radiation), chemical (e.g., air pollutants), and biological (e.g., viruses, bacteria, and other pathogenic microorganisms) through modulation of signaling and defense pathways activated by the simple exchange of single electrons between oxidizing chemical species, molecular targets, and reducing/antioxidant chemical species. The correct functioning of the redox system (oxidative eu-stress) is fundamental for the well-being of the skin, from the epidermis to the dermis, up to the subcutaneous: in fact, most of the signaling and defense pathways linked to the inflammatory and regenerative response are under the control of the redox system. Any alteration of the redox system can favor the onset or aggravate the course of numerous inflammatory and degenerative skin diseases (oxidative stress). The purpose of this Special Issue is to promote the publication of studies and research on the functioning of the redox system of the skin and subcutaneous tissue in health and disease, with particular reference to biochemical, pathophysiological, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects (e.g., nutraceuticals, photobiomodulation, etc.), in the fields of dermatology and aesthetics and regenerative medicine.
