Neuro and Neurodevelopmental Toxicity, and Biotransformation of Pesticides

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A main concern of many pesticides and related chemicals are adverse effects on nervous system and its embryonic development. In some cases, the mechanism causing their biocide properties are also related with the mode of action of the potential adverse effect to humans and other non-target organism. Example of that may be the case of neurotoxicity of pyrethroid, carbamate and organophosphate insecticides. The different risk for the target and non-target species may be related with different chemical-biomolecule interactions that are triggering the toxic process, now a days called as the adverse output pathway (AOP). Differences in the biotransformation, and therefore different bio disposition of the toxic compound or metabolite to the critical molecular event(s) are also a critical factor causing species difference and difference response among apparently similar compounds.

Consequently, the understanding of the molecular events and the species specificity in the molecular interactions and biotransformation are of high relevant scientific  interest and for improved risk assessment evaluation.

For this Special Issue, manuscripts will be especially welcome dealing with any of the following aspects and approaches:

  • Studies with either current commercial pesticides or with related chemicals of similar chemical families, or with metabolites of products of transformation.
  • Experimental and computational predictions of the interaction of chemicals with biomolecules related with their biotransformation or their biological activity with direct or indirect consequences to nerve systems.
  • Studies with model biomolecules and in vitro cell studies in models relevant for humans or species of environmental interest.
  • Especially welcome manuscript applying in vitro studies and new approaches methodologies (NAM), cellular models, 3D cellular models, organoids, biochip and microfluid models, gene expressions, proteomic, metabolomic.
  • In vitro and in silico approaches to understand the relationship between biotransformation and toxicokinetic with neurotoxicity and cell and species differential sensitivities.
  • Molecular mechanism of antidotes and therapeutic approaches.
  • Mechanistic validations of biomarkers of effects, exposure, or sensitivity.
  • In vivo animal or human studies will only be accepted if specifically dealing with understanding and confirming mode of actions previously predicted after in vitro or computational studies.
  • Reviews will be welcome if specific mechanistic issues are revised and are offering systematic descriptions and offering new conclusions of the systematic assessment of the meta-analysis of the revised data.

Please note that, for IJMS’ paper, theoretical studies and revisions should offer new insights into the understanding of experimental results or suggest new experimentally testable hypotheses.
