Dear Colleagues,
Articular cartilage is a special form of connective tissue that covers the surface of bones, providing a proper distribution of forces and protecting the ends of bones. It lacks innervation and vascularization, which explains its poor regenerative capacity. These characteristics determine both the low proliferation of chondrocytes and the impossibility of differentiation of the mesenchymal precursors present in the bone marrow, as the subchondral bone plate represents a physical barrier preventing them from reaching the site of injury. Many researchers have used mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for regenerative purposes based on their multipotential differentiation capacity. Originally, the therapeutic use of MSCs was aimed at replacing damaged cells. However, it is stated today that the beneficial effects on regeneration mainly occur through paracrine factors secreted by MSCs, which stimulate the innate tissue repair and modulate inflammation and immune response. This has led to the development of new therapeutic approaches in which the secretome of MSCs is used as the therapeutic agent, thereby addressing some of the limitations of the original MSC transplantation approach.
The aim of this Special Issue is to invite original research articles that focus on the latest advances in the characterization and/or use of the MSC secretome for cartilage regeneration, with special relevance in the design of new delivery systems and their combination with new biomaterials. Review articles describing the status of the use of the secretome for cartilage tissue engineering are also welcome.
