Dear Colleagues,
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids are widely used for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. NSAIDs also have antipyretic effects and glucocorticoids have strong immunosuppressive properties. Despite their effectiveness, both classes of anti-inflammatory drugs can cause several adverse effects, especially with long-term use. Vitamin E, with its antioxidant capabilities, holds promise in mitigating some of these adverse effects, enhancing immune function and reducing bone health deterioration. It may offer liver, gastrointestinal, renal, and cardiovascular protective benefits against some of these drugs’ adverse effects. Incorporating antioxidants into the therapeutic regimens of patients on glucocorticoids and NSAIDs may enhance the safety and efficacy of these medications. Further research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and to develop comprehensive guidelines for antioxidant supplementation.
