Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight recent advances in several fields of cardiothoracic surgery, with a particular focus on the synergy between surgery and new technologies. We will now share some examples representing our scope. The minimally invasive approach, in any setting, is increasingly becoming the gold standard in oncologic thoracic surgery, not only in the early stages, but throughout, with excellent results. Its impact has also been significant in cardiac surgery. Robotic technology is dramatically changing the paradigmatic concepts of surgical activity, both in terms of the distance between surgeon and patient and in terms of the increased support of artificial intelligence (AI) in tissue manipulation, allowing new surgical possibilities. The union between new compatible biomaterials and more advanced radiologic software has allowed the creation of patient-tailored prostheses in cases of large tumoral involvement in the chest wall. As described in several papers, the development of radiomic algorithms could be useful in disease screening and in the planning of the best surgical treatment, and new opportunities are expected to arise for its application. The use of more sophisticated and easier-to-handle extracorporeal supports during thoracic surgery allows surgeons to safely perform complex procedures, such as airway surgery or the removal of huge mediastinal lesions. Recently, the minimally invasive approach has played a role in the management of some cardiac arrhythmias, with encouraging results. Finally, tracheal transplantation is an exciting ongoing challenge, reserved for a subset of patients with airway diseases. In conclusion, the aim of this Special Issue is to include worldwide experiences and new perspectives on cardiothoracic surgery, to extend the horizons of this field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
