Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Modern anesthesia and pain management extend well beyond ensuring unconsciousness and intraoperative stability. Contemporary practice aims to optimize organ protection, accelerate functional recovery, reduce perioperative morbidity and deliver safe, effective analgesia across the surgical pathway and in non-operative settings. At the same time, clinicians face persistent challenges: heterogeneous patient risk profiles, complex comorbidities, variable responses to anesthetic and analgesic strategies, opioid stewardship and the need for reliable, outcome-relevant monitoring and decision support.
This Special Issue, “Clinical Applications and Advances in Anesthesia and Pain Management”, invites original clinical research and systematic or narrative reviews that advance the evidence base for perioperative anesthetic care and acute/chronic pain management. We particularly welcome works that link interventions, monitoring and care pathways to meaningful outcomes such as complications, recovery trajectories, patient-reported outcomes and long-term function.
Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Perioperative risk stratification, hemodynamic/ventilatory management and outcome-driven monitoring
- Regional anesthesia and ultrasound-guided techniques; local anesthetic safety and optimization
- Multimodal, opioid-sparing analgesia; enhanced recovery pathways (ERAS); perioperative medicine models and prehabilitation
- Prevention and management of common perioperative complications (e.g., PONV, delirium, hypotension, respiratory events)
- Acute pain services, chronic postsurgical pain and transitions from acute to chronic pain
- Novel pharmacological strategies, devices, digital/AI-supported decision tools and implementation science in real-world practice
We look forward to contributions that are clinically actionable and methodologically robust, with clear relevance to patient care.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
