Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue highlights the importance of membrane technology for achieving water sustainability in the face of increasing water scarcity. Membrane technology plays a crucial role in producing high-quality drinking water, reducing pollution, conserving water resources, and minimizing the environmental impact of traditional water treatment methods. Membrane-based solutions offer efficient and sustainable water treatment and purification processes by selectively removing contaminants while allowing the passage of water. The scientific background of membrane technology encompasses decades of research, resulting in the development of advanced membranes, module designs, and process optimization. This Special Issue aims to explore the latest advancements, challenges, and opportunities in membrane technology for water sustainability, fostering collaboration and innovation in this field.

This Special Issue aims to consolidate innovative research within the realm of membrane technology, specifically addressing its significance for water sustainability. It places emphasis on exploring advancements, applications, and challenges in the field. By serving as a platform for researchers, it aims to facilitate the sharing of original studies and reviews that contribute to our comprehension of membrane structure, performance, processes, and applications within the context of water sustainability. Authors are encouraged to provide comprehensive details of their experimental and theoretical findings, including thorough experimental, theoretical, and computational information, thereby enabling reproducibility and fostering further progress in the field.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  1. Membrane materials and fabrication techniques for sustainable water treatment;
  2. Novel membrane processes and configurations for water purification;
  3. Membrane fouling mitigation and fouling control strategies;
  4. Membrane characterization techniques and performance evaluation;
  5. Membrane-based technologies for desalination and brackish water treatment;
  6. Membrane applications in wastewater treatment and reuse;
  7. Membrane bioreactors for sustainable water treatment;
  8. Hybrid membrane systems and integration with other water treatment technologies;
  9. Energy efficiency and sustainability in membrane processes;
  10. Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of membrane-based water treatment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
