Dear Colleagues,
Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has developed rapidly across many industrial sectors including aerospace, automotive, and biomedical fields. Although conventional microfabrication processes have been well established, their capabilities are generally limited to two-dimensional geometries with simple features. Some modifications and improvements on specific AM technologies allowed the fabrication of 3D microparts or structures. Broadly speaking, 3D micro AM processes can be divided into three categories. The first category consists of scalable AM processes, such as stereolithography, selective laser melting/sintering, inkjet processes, fused deposition modeling, and laminated object manufacturing; the second category includes 3D direct writing processes, such as ink- and laser-based writing, and beam deposition-based processes; and the third category comprises hybrid processes such as electrochemical fabrication and shape deposition modeling. Polymer, metal, and ceramic material families have been explored using a wide variety of micro AM processes despite existing challenges including material requirements, equipment modifications, surface finish related issues, process modeling, and others. Accordingly, this Special Issue seeks to showcase research papers, short communications, and review articles that focus on the fabrication and characterization of parts using novel micro-AM processes; process optimization strategies; quality control pathways for defect mitigation and resolution enhancement; and unique design approaches to impact material rheology, multimaterial capabilities, and residual stress removal.
