Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Issue will focus on the newest findings on metal complexes with active small molecules (M-ASM) in biological systems. This publication will discuss all aspects of signalling and regulatory functions of metal complexes with active small molecules, including redox status modulation and anti/pro-oxidant activities, protein induction and inhibition. Tentative subjects include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Turnover, metabolism, and interconversions of metal complexes with active small molecules (M-ASMs):
    • Synthesis: How M-ASMs are produced in cells, including the enzymes and metabolic pathways involved.
    • Degradation: How M-ASMs are broken down in cells, including the enzymes and metabolic pathways involved.
    • Interconversions: How M-ASMs are converted into different forms, including the enzymes and metabolic pathways involved.
  • Signaling and regulatory functions of M-ASMs:
    • Metallic cellular targets of ASMs.
    • Metal cofactor-driven signaling mechanisms.
    • Oxidation state-related cellular aspects of M-ASM-dependent signaling.
    • M-ASM-related cancer-signaling pathways.
  • Correlation between the structural features of ASMs and their metal complexes with their biological activity:
    • How geometry and ligand properties of an ASM can affect its interactions with metal ions and other molecules in the cell.
    • How the periodic properties and oxidation state of the metal ion can affect the activity of the ASM-metal complex.
    • How the structure of the ASM-metal complex can affect its specificity for different cellular targets.
  • M-ASM potential applications in cellular therapeutics:
    • How M-ASMs can be used to develop new drugs and therapies for diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
    • How M-ASMs can be used to develop new strategies for DNA-targeted therapy.
    • How M-ASMs can be used to develop new tools for diagnosing and monitoring diseases.

Both review and original papers are welcome. Authors are encouraged to suggest any other aspects of the M-ASM-related cellular activity, according to their knowledge and expertise.
