Avalanche Photodiodes

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit a manuscript to the Special Issue titled “Avalanche Photodiodes”. Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) operate by creating electron–hole pairs when photons are absorbed in the depletion region. These charge carriers are then multiplied through impact ionization as they travel through a high electric field, resulting in a significant amplification of the photocurrent. APDs play a crucial role in advanced photonic systems due to their exceptional ability to detect low-intensity light signals with high sensitivity and fast response times. Their applications span various fields, including high-speed optical communication, passive optical networks, LiDAR systems, quantum communication, and medical imaging. Given the rapid development in photonics, research on APDs has gained significant attention, contributing to innovations in photon detection and enhancing device performance.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest advancements in avalanche photodiodes, addressing both theoretical and experimental approaches. We invite original research articles and comprehensive reviews that cover innovative developments, new materials, and emerging applications of APDs. Contributions that explore novel device architectures, improved noise performance, and enhanced gain-bandwidth products are particularly welcome. It can also be the study of other devices related to APD.

In this Special Issue, research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

• APDs used in optical communication systems
• APDs used in passive optical network
• Research on APDs made from different materials (eg. Si-Ge, Si, Ⅲ-Ⅴ)
• Infrared and high-speed APDs
• APD-based LiDAR and 3D imaging systems
• Other active or passive optics devices related to APD
• Noise reduction techniques in APDs
• Single-photon detection and photon counting
• Geiger-mode APDs and applications
• APDs in quantum communication and cryptography

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
