Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Educational leadership plays a multifaceted role in human development and societal transformation. It includes the development of learning and personal empowerment in the face of complex societal changes (Jäppinen, Taajamo, 2022), the integration of social responsibility into human development through educational practice (Manoj, Sahoo and Divi, 2023) and the use of evidence-based practice for school improvement and professional development (Morris, Perry and Asquith, 2020).

A leader can transform a school or community for the better and ensure success for both students and teachers. An effective leader needs to embody specific traits and administrative skills, and this may mean having extensive experience in teaching and / or working within the school community. Successful school leadership is a complex endeavor led by the principal but involving many, with an ability be sustained successfully over many years, leading to important and diverse student and school outcomes (Goode, Drysdale and Gurr, 2023).

The possible topics in this Special Issue are expected to raise the following research questions. What is the role of educational leadership in society? What is the role of educational leadership focusing on human development, teaching stream and epistemology? How can education leadership transform society? How is the school community incorporated in education leadership? How are interdisciplinary teams effective in running schools? What is women’s role in education leadership? How do education institutions think differently to provide exceptional leadership? What is the reason for conflict in leadership positions among teachers and how does it impact students? How has technology affected educational leadership? What is the impact of social media on educational leadership? What is the relation between poor leadership and bad results in schools? What are the best practices in educational leadership?

Leadership is a phenomenon and a never-ending journey of conceptual thinking and empirical methodological perception through practice. We invite you to publish papers on various interesting topic, including contexts, actors, decisions, interactions, understandings, experiences, attitudes, problems, values, ethics, theory and practice.

Principal–Teacher Relationships Under the Pressure of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Critical Factors and Implications for School Leadership During Crises

This paper aims to present the views of Greek school principals on whether and how working amid the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic affected principal–teacher relationships. It mainly focuses on the factors that contributed to the quality and course of these relationships. A qualitative methodology was adopted. Data were collected from 57 principals of public primary and secondary schools who answered the open-ended questions of an online questionnaire. Written answers were analyzed using the method of thematic analysis. The analysis revealed that, given the adverse working conditions, principal–teacher relationships were affected to varying degrees and in different ways in each school unit. For forty-seven percent of principals, the relationships remained unaffected; for forty percent, the relationships worsened; and for thirteen percent, they became stronger. It was found that teacher-related factors (attitude towards increased duties/obligations and ability to manage stress and fear), as well as work climate-related factors (communication and interaction, togetherness, and pre-existing work climate) contributed to the course of principal–teacher relations amid the pandemic. The findings provide practical and theoretical implications for school leadership and human resources management in a crisis context. Full article
