Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, the interdisciplinary field of open innovation and sustainable operations management has been gaining significant attention as a critical area of research. Open innovation, which emphasizes the use of external and internal ideas to accelerate innovation, has become a key strategy for organizations aiming to enhance their competitive edge and operational efficiency. Concurrently, sustainable operations management focuses on optimizing processes to balance economic, environmental, and social impacts. As industries strive to integrate sustainability into their core operations, understanding how open innovation can support these efforts is becoming increasingly important. This research area is vital as it addresses the dual challenge of advancing industrial efficiency while minimizing environmental footprints and enhancing social responsibility.
The Special Issue of Sustainability on "Open Innovation and Sustainable Operations Management in Industrial Engineering" aims to delve into how open innovation can be leveraged to drive sustainable practices in industrial engineering. This encompasses exploring novel methodologies, frameworks, and case studies that demonstrate the synergy between innovative practices and sustainable operations. By aligning with the journal's scope, which focuses on sustainable development and innovative approaches, this issue aims to contribute valuable insights and practical solutions that advance the understanding of how open innovation can enhance sustainability in industrial contexts.
We invite submissions on a broad range of issues in this regard, and we welcome both conceptual and empirical contributions. Some suggestions for broad themes include the following:
- Integration of Open Innovation and Sustainable Practices;
- Technological Innovations for Sustainable Operations;
- Collaborative Networks and Partnerships;
- Policy and Regulatory Implications;
- Drivers and Barriers in Innovations and Sustainable Practices;
- Measurement and Evaluation of Innovation and Sustainable Practices;
- Information System and Sustainable Supply Chains.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
