Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are calling for papers for a Special Issue of the journal Sustainability on research to shed light into Innovative Solutions for Sustainable and Safe Maritime Transportation.

Due to the continuous growth of global sea traffic in volume and number, sea areas are getting crowded, especially those where maritime routes merge or cross. This in turn leads to an increase of the likelihood of dangerous ship–ship encounters that may result in an accident with severe economic, societal or environmental losses. Concurrently, new types of ships with a skeleton crew or fully unmanned are emerging on the horizon, bringing novel navigation-related challenges.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance to keep the safety of maritime navigation at an acceptable level, adopting state-of-the-art methods and tools in order to make the further development of maritime transportation sustainable. To this end, continuous research efforts in the multidisciplinary field of maritime transportation safety are indispensable, aiming at scientific advances and practical developments improving ship, crew, and environmental safety in rapidly changing conditions.

Therefore, this Special Issue provides an excellent opportunity for researchers and practitioners to present and exchange their ideas and solutions for the maritime transportation safety-related challenges of modern shipping.
