Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue seeks to explore and present the latest research and advancements in sustainable production and supply chain practices; The main aim being to offer a thorough understanding of how innovative strategies, technologies, and methodologies can be harnessed to enhance sustainability within production and supply chain systems. By addressing the environmental, social, and economic facets of sustainability, this Special Issue aspires to foster the development of more resilient and responsible production and supply chain networks.

1. Introduction

Rapid globalization and industrialization have significantly increased the complexity of production systems and supply chains, and this complexity introduces substantial challenges, particularly in terms of sustainability. Sustainable production systems and supply chains strive to minimize environmental impacts, enhance social well-being, and ensure economic viability. As the global community contends with climate change, resource depletion, and social inequalities, the imperative for sustainability has never been more urgent.

Sustainable production systems aim to reduce waste, optimize resource use, and incorporate renewable energy sources. Concurrently, sustainable supply chain management focuses on ethical sourcing, efficient logistics, and transparent practices. Integrating these sustainable practices is crucial for addressing global sustainability challenges and achieving long-term business success.

Innovative approaches, including advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the principles of a circular economy, are revolutionizing traditional practices. These innovations provide new methods to monitor, optimize, and redesign production and supply chain processes, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

2. Aim of the Special Issue

This Special Issue aims to gather pioneering research exploring innovative approaches to enhancing sustainability in production systems and supply chain management. It will spotlight the convergence of sustainability with advanced technologies, strategic frameworks, and practical applications. By doing so, it seeks to offer valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to developing and implementing sustainable practices. This Special Issue aligns with the journal's scope by enriching the discourse on sustainable development and industrial practices, addressing the need for multidisciplinary research that integrates environmental, social, and economic perspectives in production and supply chain management.

3. Suggested Themes:

  • Sustainable Production Technologies: Innovations in manufacturing processes that reduce environmental impact;
  • Green Supply Chain Management: Strategies for sustainable sourcing, logistics, and waste management;
  • Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency: Implementing circular economy principles in production and supply chains;
  • Technological Innovations for Sustainability: The roles of IoT, AI, and blockchain in enhancing sustainability;
  • Social Sustainability in Supply Chains: Ensuring fair labor practices, community engagement, and social responsibility;
  • Economic Impacts of Sustainable Practices: Assessing the cost–benefit analysis of sustainable initiatives.

4. Research Areas of this Special Issue

  • Advanced Manufacturing Techniques: Research on new manufacturing methods that minimize environmental footprints;
  • Sustainable Logistics and Transportation: Studies on reducing the carbon footprint of logistics and transportation networks;
  • Ethical and Responsible Sourcing: Investigation into practices that ensure ethical sourcing and supplier engagement;
  • Waste Reduction and Management: Innovations in waste minimization, recycling, and reuse in production systems;
  • Digital Transformation for Sustainability: Exploring how digital technologies can drive sustainable production and supply chain practices;
  • Case Studies and Best Practices: Real-world examples of successful implementation of sustainable practices in production and supply chains.

By covering these themes and research areas, this Special Issue will provide a comprehensive overview of the current state and future directions of sustainable production systems and supply chain management, offering valuable contributions to the field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
