Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Safety for transportation systems is one of the main requirements to enable sustainable development and increase accessibility to satisfy mobility needs. Nevertheless, road accidents are the first cause of death of young people and human and social costs are still increasing, although in advanced countries, an improvement in road safety levels has been observed in recent years. Many actions have been proposed to reduce the number of fatalities in road accidents, and new technologies are becoming mandatory for new vehicles to improve road safety with the final goal in Europe to reduce road deaths to zero by 2050 (Vision Zero).

As part of this Special Issue, we invite papers that discuss methodologies, modeling approaches, engineering solutions, performance, and impacts of initiatives and policies relevant to the implementation of road safety towards advanced and sustainable transportation. Papers can target different domains, including, but not limited to:

Data collection and analysis for safety evaluation:

  • In-service vehicle monitoring;
  • Traffic and safety observation with advanced tools;
  • Risky maneuvers detection;
  • Driving behavior and human factors.

Modeling approaches to identify risk in road traffic:

  • Simulation studies for impact assessment to support solutions;
  • Driving monitoring to improve safety;
  • Road safety indicators;
  • Decision support systems for road network managers in monitoring and managing road safety.

Safety solutions for road users and road managers:

  • Vulnerable road users (e.g., pedestrian, cyclists, motorcyclist, etc.);
  • Solutions for road vehicles to reduce accidents;
  • Solutions for specific user groups aiming at equity and inclusion.

Policies and systems for road safety:

  • Protection of vulnerable road users;
  • Urban policies;
  • Enforcement systems;
  • Planning and regulations.

Impact of vehicle innovation on safety:

  • Advance driver assistance system (ADAS);
  • Cooperative, connected, and automated mobility (CCAM).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
