Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The main topic of this Special Issue is to explore the role of education in the context of climate change and sustainability.

According to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, education is supposed to play a central role as a tool for mitigation of and adaptation to climate change. This role is also acknowledged by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and governments around the world and society in general recognize that education is necessary to mobilize society around the issue of climate change. Nevertheless, there are no global or regional strategies to adapt or to transform the educational system toward these goals.

Several alternatives have been proposed to adapt the current educational system to include the objectives of sustainability. These alternatives range from the introduction of new competences to changes in the curriculum or even the creation of new courses around the topic of climate change.

These alternatives should be investigated, and research must be conducted to identify effective strategies to educate future generations on mitigation of and adaptation to climate change.

From this perspective, this Special Issue aims to contribute to the present, most relevant advances in this research area.

Potential topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Best practices for educational interventions around climate change;
  • Diagnostics of the awareness of the climate change problem;
  • The role of scientific education to understand the consequences of climate change;
  • Multidisciplinary approaches to education on climate change and sustainability.

  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
