Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

1) The world is approaching the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference observing the CO2 concentrations above 414ppm. Each year the world produces 380+ million tonnes of plastic waste, only 9% of which gets recycled and at least 8mln tonnes are entering our oceans each year. According to the WWF Living planet report we have lost 68% global biodiversity since 1970.

2) The special issue of the Sustainability journal will address the top sustainability challenges and focus on solutions at the level of cities. Currently 55% of the world’s population lives in cities, while the UN projects this figure to grow to 68% by 2050. Cities are systems where the consumption and production activities, as well as transport networks and businesses are concentrated. Thus, addressing sustainability transformation in cities could be a powerful instrument in changing the dangerous patterns of development, which has been recognized by the UN Habitat organization and many city mayors around the world. Many new sustainability initiatives are being developed around the world, many cities issue Green Bonds, we are witnessing a revolution in ESG investment, businesses are rapidly transforming business models in line with sustainable development priorities.

3) Suggest themes.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:
