Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, digitalization and sustainability seem to represent the most updated features in the tourism sector, responding to the increasing complexity of society, acceleration of social change and socioeconomic crisis following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. These issues, together with the technological advances in both the demand and supply side, create countless challenges as well opportunities for all involved actors. The digitalization of the sector allows for optimization of natural, cultural, urban resources production and consumption, enhancing sustainability in the tourism sector in terms of preservation of resources through “sustainable use” and increasing benefits for the host communities via “sustainable development”. Place branding practices favor the integration commercial branding elements with the attractive qualities of places, cities and territories, thus offering a greater contribution to the topic in the context of the new digital mediascape.

Therefore, this Special Issue aims at glimpsing the future of the domain by redefining the theoretical setting and practices of place branding in the digital era and their contribution to a sustainable view of tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.

To accept the challenge, many topics have to be considered, such as the relationship between place, destination and tourism branding and sustainable tourism, digital tools for place branding and sustainable tourism experiences, stakeholder and local community engagement and strategic governance of tourism destinations in addition to data collection and research methods in the field toward enhancing knowledge, theory, and practice for digital place branding and sustainable tourism and formulating an agenda for  future research.

For this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Specific research areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:
