Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Seasonal influenza vaccination (SIV) can be helpful in reducing influenza outbreaks. The reasons that affect the willingness to receive SIV and the strategies to enhance this willingness are essential to public health. This Special Issue will compile original research reports and reviews on this topic. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following: (1) the levels and determinants of willingness to receive SIV, (2) strategies to enhance willingness and uptake, (3) facilitators and barriers to implementing SIV programs, and (4) the evaluation of SIV programs or interventions.

Background: Promoting seasonal influenza vaccination among parents may help increase the coverage of seasonal influenza vaccination among both parents and children. This study aims to investigate determinants of behavioral intention to receive a seasonal influenza vaccination among parents of children aged 0–15 years to protect themselves. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among parents of children aged 0 to 15 years with administrative health records in Shenzhen, China, between September and October 2024. Participants were recruited through multistage random sampling. First, 10 community health centers were randomly selected in Shenzhen. Within each selected center, 200 parents were randomly selected. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted. Results: Among 1504 parents, 47.6% intended to receive a seasonal influenza vaccination in the next year. After adjusting for significant background characteristics, parents’ intention to receive a seasonal influenza vaccination was associated with a higher intention to vaccinate their children against seasonal influenza (AOR: 20.39). At the individual level, eight items measuring illness representations of seasonal influenza were associated with higher odds of intending to receive such a vaccine (AOR: 1.15–1.25), including identity (identifying symptoms), timeline, negative consequences, personal and treatment control, concern, negative emotions, and coherence. At the interpersonal level, parents who had higher levels of general and family-oriented altruism (AOR: 1.10–2.47), better family harmony (AOR: 1.07), higher exposure to information related to seasonal influenza on social media (AOR: 1.24–1.38), and thoughtful consideration of information veracity (AOR: 1.33) were more likely to report an intention. Conclusions: There are strong needs to promote seasonal influenza vaccination among parents in China. Full article

Effectiveness of an Active Offer of Influenza Vaccination to Hospitalized Frail Patients

Background/Objectives: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the influenza season returned to its typical pre-pandemic circulation patterns. The category of people most vulnerable to severe influenza was older adults, and frail individuals, confirming their central role as a priority group for vaccination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an active influenza vaccination program in an area with low influenza vaccination rates and propensity to vaccine co-administration. Methods: People recruited were hospitalized frail individuals, patients over the age of 60, and those with chronic illnesses or comorbidities. It was administered a questionnaire to investigate adherence to influenza vaccination and the Health Action Process Approach was used to evaluate the propensity to co-administration. Results: A total of 418 hospitalized patients were enrolled in the study, of whom 58.4% (n = 244) received the influenza vaccine and 17.9% (n = 75) had a higher propensity to have co-administration of influenza and other recommended vaccines. The factors associated with influenza vaccination acceptance were received advice from hospital healthcare workers (aOR = 10.6 p < 0.001) and previous influenza vaccination (aOR = 18.1; p < 0.001). Propensity to vaccine co-administration was associated with a higher educational level (aOR = 4.21; p = 0.002), receiving vaccination advice from hospital healthcare workers (aOR = 2.80; p = 0.03), perceived positive outcome (aOR = 1.29; p = 0.02) and perceived self-efficacy (aOR = 1.48; p < 0.001). Conslusions: This study explored the impact on influenza vaccination coverage in implementing in hospital vaccination offer. The reliability of this strategy, together with the standard vaccination offer, could allow reaching the recommended vaccination coverage, particularly among at-risk people. Full article
