Areas characterised by high ecological and cultural value are increasingly exposed to overtourism and intensifying land-use pressures, often exacerbated by mobility policies aimed at enhancing regional accessibility and promoting tourism. These dynamics create spatial tensions, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas such as those within the Natura 2000 network and Sites of Community Importance (SCIs), where intensified visitor flows, and infrastructure expansion can disrupt the balance between conservation and development. This study offers a geospatial analysis of the current state (2024) of such dynamics in the Lazio Region (Italy), evaluating the effects of mobility strategies on ecological vulnerability and tourism pressure. By applying isochrone-based accessibility modelling, GIS buffer analysis, and spatial overlays, the research maps the intersection of accessibility, heritage value, and environmental sensitivity. The methodology enables the identification of critical zones where accessibility improvements coincide with heightened ecological risk and tourism-related stress. The original contribution of this work lies in its integrated spatial framework, which combines accessibility metrics with indicators of ecological and heritage significance to visualise and assess emerging risk areas. The Lazio Region, distinguished by its heterogeneous landscapes and ambitious mobility planning initiatives, constitutes a significant case study for examining how policy-driven improvements in transport infrastructure may inadvertently exacerbate spatial disparities and intensify ecological vulnerabilities in peripheral and sensitive territorial contexts. The findings support the formulation of adaptive, place-based policy recommendations aimed at mitigating the unintended consequences of accessibility-led tourism strategies. These include prioritising soft mobility, enhancing regulatory protection in high-risk zones, and fostering coordinated governance across sectors. The present study explored the seasonal dynamics of spat settlement and growth of the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in the semi-enclosed and eutrophic Maliakos Gulf (Central Aegean, Greece), a coastal system within the Natura 2000 network (GR 2440002, Natura 2000). Spat collectors were deployed at three mussel farms representing different locations in the gulf (north, south, and inner west) and at multiple depths over a year. The results revealed a clear reproductive cycle, with spawning initiated in early January and spat settlement occurring from March to June. Settlement intensity was highest in shallower waters during the beginning of the season (March) and in the end (June), while depth had no significant effect mid-season. Mussel size and weight varied significantly with season and location, with the largest individuals observed during spring and early summer at the north and south sites. Environmental monitoring depicted strong nitrogen enrichment and phosphorus limitation, driven by inputs from the Spercheios River and surrounding agricultural activities. During winter, elevated chlorophyll-a concentrations likely supported early larval development, while nutrient imbalances threaten long-term ecosystem stability. These findings underscore the importance of area- and season-specific management of spat collectors and call for integrated monitoring and regulation of nutrient inputs to safeguard the ecological integrity of the gulf and ensure sustainable mussel farming. This study aims to assess the role of headwater systems (HS) in enhancing ecological connectivity and supporting Green Infrastructure in the Centre Region of Portugal. Specifically, it identifies restoration opportunity areas within HS by analysing land-use changes over the past 70 years, modelling land-use scenarios to promote ecological resilience, and evaluating connectivity between HS and Natura 2000 sites. The methodology integrates spatial analysis of historical land-use data with connectivity modelling using least-cost path approaches. Results show substantial transformation in HS areas, notably the expansion of eucalyptus plantations and a decline in agricultural land. Approximately 58% of the HS are identified as requiring restoration, including areas within the Natura 2000 network. The connectivity assessment reveals that HS can function as effective ecological corridors, contributing to improved water regulation, soil conservation, gene flow, and wildfire mitigation. A total of 61 potential ecological linkages between Natura 2000 sites were identified. These findings highlight the strategic importance of integrating HS into regional and national Green Infrastructure planning and supporting the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. The study recommends prioritising headwater restoration through multi-scale planning approaches and active involvement of local stakeholders to ensure sustainable land-use management. Full article

Centipedes (Chilopoda, Myriapoda) are crucial soil predators, yet their vulnerability to climate and land use change remains unexplored. We assess the impact of these drivers on Greek centipedes, identify current and future biodiversity hotspots, and evaluate the effectiveness of the Natura 2000 Network of protected areas for their conservation. We used an updated species occurrence database of Greek centipedes, derived from literature reviews and museum collections, and evaluated database completeness and geographic sampling biases. Species Distribution Models were employed to predict future distribution shifts under climate and land use change scenarios. Biodiversity hotspots were identified based on species richness (SR) and corrected-weighted endemism (CWE) metrics. We overlapped SR and CWE metrics against the Natura 2000 Network to assess its effectiveness. We found that sampling effort is highly heterogeneous across Greece. All species are projected to experience range contractions, particularly in the 2080s, with variation across scenarios and taxa. Current biodiversity hotspots are concentrated in the south Aegean islands and mainland mountain ranges, where areas of persistent high biodiversity are also projected to occur. The Natura 2000 Network currently covers 52% of SR and 44% of CWE hotspots, with projected decreases in SR coverage but increases in CWE coverage. Our work highlights the vulnerability of Greek centipedes to climate and land use change and reveals conservation shortfalls within protected areas. We identify priority areas for future field surveys, based on sampling bias and survey completeness assessments, and highlight the need for further research into mechanisms driving centipede responses to global change. Analytics and Trends over Time of Wildfires in Protected Areas in Greece and Other Mediterranean Countries

Wildfires are becoming more frequent and widespread, posing a threat to European ecosystems. Recent findings quantified a large fraction of Europe’s burnt areas within Natura 2000 protected area sites. This study analyzed total wildfire events and burnt areas in Greece. The frequency of protected area burn percentages per fire event and their trend over time were quantified. The mean protected area percentage of burn per fire event across other Mediterranean countries was compared. Results indicated an increase in the total number of wildfire events over time, while total burnt area was highest in recent years but generally varied. Forest-type vegetation burn exhibits no trend over time with the exception being that the transitional vegetation percentage of burn per wildfire is increasing, while agricultural land is decreasing. The protected area percentage of burn per wildfire is not related with total area burn. The majority of the high percentage protected area burns derive mainly from small or medium total area burn wildfires. More than a third of wildfires burned exclusively (100%) Natura protected area surfaces. Protected area percent per burn is increasing over time. This increase is not related to the increased total burnt area. Protected area percent per burn is considerably higher in Greece in comparison to Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Protected area percent per burn is increasing over time in Greece and with a slower slope in Portugal, while it has no monotonic trend in Italy and Spain. Reserves face increasing burn frequency, necessitating effective management strategies to conserve them. Climate change exacerbates total wildfires or surface area burned but cannot entirely explain the steep increase in protected area percent per burn. While a legislative framework preventing arson exists, management measures need to further improve the efficacy and clarity of legislation. High-power electricity networks and wind and solar energy facilities are often causes of wildfires and should receive low priority or not be licensed in Natura areas. Full article

This study introduces a data-driven framework for enhancing the sustainable management of fish species in Romania’s Natura 2000 protected areas through ecosystem modeling and association rule mining (ARM). Drawing on seven years of ecological monitoring data for 13 fish species of ecological and socio-economic importance, we apply the FP-Growth algorithm to extract high-confidence co-occurrence patterns among 19 codified conservation measures. By encoding expert habitat assessments into binary transactions, the analysis revealed 44 robust association rules, highlighting interdependent management actions that collectively improve species resilience and habitat conditions. These results provide actionable insights for integrated, evidence-based conservation planning. The approach demonstrates the interpretability, scalability, and practical relevance of ARM in biodiversity management, offering a replicable method for supporting adaptive ecological decision making across complex protected area networks. The REPowerEU Plan calls for a massive speed-up of renewable energy, which can undermine nature conservation. We explored the impact of an industrial-scale wind power project planned inside a Natura 2000 site (Special Protected Areas for birds) in the mountains of Central Evvoia, in Greece. If approved, the project could cause significant land artificialization, land take, and habitat fragmentation, having a land take intensity of 4.5 m2/MWh. An important part of forested land (14%) would be artificialized. The wilderness character would sharply decline from 49% to 4%, with a large roadless area (51.4 km2) shrinking by 77% and a smaller one (16.1 km2) lost. The project greatly overlaps with the Natura 2000 network (97%), a regional Key Biodiversity Area and Important Bird Area (84%), and a potential Global Key Biodiversity Area (27%). It might affect 23 globally threatened and 44 endemic species. This case study is a typical example of the poor implementation of the Natura 2000 and EIA legislation and highlights their recurring inability to prevent harmful human activities across Europe from affecting protected species of European interest and ecosystem functions. We conclude with policy recommendations to help increase renewables’ sustainability and minimize land artificialization in the EU. Full article

The Mediterranean trout (currently referred to as Salmo ghigii for Corsican and Italian-native populations) is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List, due to fragmented distribution and declining populations across its whole range, and is included in Annex II of the European Habitat Directive. The widespread genome introgression from the invasive Atlantic trout (Salmo trutta), overexploitation, and habitat alterations represent major threats to the persistence of native populations. The LIFE18NAT/IT/000931 STREAMS project aims to enhance conservation status of Mediterranean trout in 6 Italian pilot areas (Maiella, Sibillini Mountains, Casentino Forests and Pollino National Parks, Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Regional Park, and Sardinia with five sites of the Natura 2000 Network), and in 19 transferability areas covering almost the whole Italian species range. To achieve this, the following conservation strategies were implemented: (i) the identification of residual native populations; (ii) eradication of entirely Atlantic-exotic populations and removal of hybrids in admixed populations; (iii) restocking/reintroduction of native populations; (iv) monitoring/improving the Mediterranean trout habitats quality; (v) production of the “Guidelines for the conservation and management of native Mediterranean trout and its habitat”; and (vi) the prevention of illegal stocking. Here, we present the project rationale, major outcomes on demographic and genetic characterization of wild populations, and summary results from conservation actions. Full article

This study investigates the institutional innovation pathways for integrating comprehensive transportation networks into China’s territorial spatial planning system, with a focus on resolving the conflicts between ecological conservation and infrastructure development. By proposing a ‘constraint-coupling-innovation’ framework, this research addresses the gaps in existing spatial governance mechanisms, particularly the insufficient alignment between transportation planning and the ‘three zones and three lines’ (ecological conservation, agricultural production, and urban development zones with binding redline) system. The study employs mixed-method approaches, including geospatial conflict analysis (GIS), AI-driven policy coordination tools, and case studies from the Yangtze River Economic Belt. It demonstrates that rigid ecological constraints (e.g., ecological sensitivity veto power) can reduce planning conflicts effectively, while adaptive governance models enhance land use efficiency and stakeholder collaboration. Key findings reveal a significant negative correlation (R2 = 0.75) between ecological protection redline (EPR) coverage and transportation network density, underscoring the necessity for differentiated governance strategies in high-conflict regions. A comparative analysis with the EU’s Natura 2000 sites and TEN-T networks further highlights China’s unique hierarchical governance model, which integrates top-down ecological mandates with localized technological innovations, such as digital twins and polycentric decision making. This study contributes to global debates on sustainable spatial planning by offering actionable pathways for balancing infrastructure expansion with ecological resilience, while also proposing institutional reforms, such as a National Transportation Spatial Governance Index (NTSGI), to standardize ecological compliance. These insights provide both theoretical advancements in spatial institutionalism and practical tools for policymakers navigating the dual challenges of urbanization and climate resilience. This paper focuses on the challenges for the co-implementation of two European Union Directives, i.e., the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive, for the management of Mediterranean coastal lagoons as protected areas. Many of these ecosystems are included in the Natura 2000 network, the largest network of protected areas in the world. Based on semi-structured interviews with 45 stakeholders from 41 institutions, the study identified five main types of perceived barriers: economic, political and socio-cultural, historical, administrative, and ecological. The study confirmed that the co-implementation of the Habitats Directive (HD) and the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Mediterranean coastal lagoons generated multiple and interrelated barriers. Beyond their regulatory complexity, these EU directives confronted managers with deep operational challenges. First, mismatches between administrative and ecological boundaries weakened their ability to control key ecological processes such as nutrient flows. Second, the proliferation of indicators, often perceived as disconnected from local realities, reinforced the critique of a management by numbers approach. Finally, the widespread use of regulatory exemptions, while intended to adapt EU rules to local contexts, frequently fueled persistent mistrust among stakeholders, especially in historically degraded environments. These challenges were further exacerbated by a siloed organization of administrations, limiting coordination and adaptive management. Overall, these findings call for more integrated governance frameworks, a more critical and context-sensitive use of indicators, and greater transparency in derogation procedures. Full article

The European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) has experienced significant population declines across its European breeding range, primarily due to habitat loss. Our study aimed to provide a new reference for the conservation of Turtle Doves in Evros province, a biodiversity hotspot. We used Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to assess Turtle Dove breeding habitat suitability and account for the area of suitable habitats that is not protected or have been affected by a recent mega-fire. The best performing model identified tree cover density, the percent cover of permanently irrigated land and heterogenous agricultural areas, proximity to non-irrigated agricultural land, and forest edge length as the most important predictors of habitat suitability, signifying the importance of an interplay between open and forested land. Our results indicate that 39% of the study area provides a suitable breeding habitat, with the majority located in central and southeastern regions. Conversely, irrigated agricultural areas in the northeast are unsuitable. We found that more than 60% of suitable habitats fall within the Natura 2000 network, underscoring the importance of protected areas for conservation. However, wildfires pose a major threat, with almost 25% of suitable habitats being affected by a recent mega-fire, highlighting the need for recovery in these areas. Our study provides a foundation for targeted habitat management and restoration efforts in NE Greece and contributes to the broader understanding of the species’ habitat requirements across its breeding range. Background/Objectives: The stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) is an evergreen coniferous species valued for its edible seeds, which provide significant economic benefits to local populations. Remarkable phenotypic plasticity but low genetic variation characterizes the species. In Greece, natural populations of P. pinea are part of the Natura 2000 network and are protected under Annex I Priority Habitat type 2270. These populations, located across six Natura 2000 sites (including two islands), face increasing threats from tourism and climate change, leading to ecosystem degradation. Genetic and epigenetic studies are critical for the conservation of forest species because they provide insights into the genetic diversity, adaptive potential, and resilience of species, helping to inform effective management strategies and protect biodiversity in changing environments. This study aims to assess the genetic and epigenetic diversity of P. pinea in four Natura 2000 sites using molecular markers and to propose conservation strategies to ensure the species’ long-term sustainability. Additionally, a preliminary investigation of water potential under maximum daily water demand was conducted to evaluate the species’ adaptive response. Methods: Genetic analysis was performed using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) markers, while epigenetic analysis was conducted using Methylation-Susceptible Amplified Polymorphism (MSAP) markers. Sampling was carried out in four Natura 2000 areas, where genetic and epigenetic diversity patterns were examined. Furthermore, a preliminary study on water potential under peak daily water demand conditions was conducted to assess the species’ physiological adaptation to environmental stress. Results: The results of this study provide valuable insights into conservation strategies by highlighting the potential role of epigenetic variation in the adaptability of P. pinea, despite its low genetic variability. Understanding the species’ epigenetic flexibility can inform conservation efforts aimed at enhancing its resilience to environmental stressors, such as climate change. Additionally, the preliminary water potential analysis contributes to identifying physiological traits that may help predict the species’ survival under varying environmental conditions, guiding the development of more targeted conservation practices and management plans. Further research could refine these findings and strengthen their application in conservation efforts. Conclusions: The conclusions emphasize the critical importance of this research in informing conservation efforts for P. pinea in Greece, particularly considering climate change and human pressures. The results highlight the need for both in-situ and ex-situ conservation strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the species. The key recommendations include the protection of natural habitats, the implementation of controlled seed collection practices, and further research into the epigenetic mechanisms that may enhance the species’ resilience to environmental stress. Future studies should focus on deepening our understanding of these epigenetic factors and their role in the adaptability of P. pinea, which will be essential for developing more effective conservation measures. This study presents a complete and updated checklist of the vascular flora of the SAC “Bosco di Santo Pietro”, an important natural area located in south-eastern Sicily. Through an integrated approach combining field research, analysis of historical herbariums and a literature review, 583 taxa belonging to 78 families and 339 genera were identified. A comparison with an older floristic list of the Santo Pietro Forest dating back to 1889 highlights some significant changes, such as a decrease in several hygrophilous and nemoral species probably due to climate change and habitat degradation. In particular, our diachronic analysis reveals the disappearance of 178 taxa and the persistence of 199 taxa representing 47% and 53% of the 377 taxa listed in the first inventory, respectively. From the study of the Ellenberg indicator of the two lists, lower values of L and T and higher values of M and N emerge in the older flora, testifying to the significant environmental modifications for more than a century of this Sicilian and Mediterranean hotspot. The Pelagos Sanctuary hosts eight resident cetacean species. Genetically different from Atlantic populations, their conservation is essential to preserve the whole biodiversity of the Ligurian Sea. The NATURA 2000 network is currently identified as one of the most efficient conservation tools due to its legally binding nature; however, its effectiveness for cetacean preservation is still unclear. The study used data systematically collected within the Pelagos Sanctuary from 2008 to 2021 by the FLT Med Net and the LIFE Conceptu Maris projects to investigate cetaceans distribution, Richness and diversity related to the existing protected areas. Of the 423 hexagons considered, only 21.28% of the study area was covered by French NATURA 2000 sites and 9.22% by Italian sites. French NATURA 2000 sites had the highest coverage of weighted Encounter Rate (ER_w) and biodiversity values. Only three species showed statistically significant differences between the French and Italian protected and non-protected hexagons, and biodiversity showed no significant difference. Only T. truncatus had higher median over Italian protected hexagons. The Pelagos Sanctuary still lacks offshore NATURA 2000 sites, especially in Italian waters. For this reason, areas to amplify the Network aimed at increasing cetacean and biodiversity conservation were highlighted in the results of this study. Full article

From August 2021 to December 2023, one adult male Mediterranean monk seal was repeatedly registered, through a systematic monitoring camera system, frequenting a marine cave in southern Kefalonia Island, central Ionian Sea, Greece. The presence of the same adult seal in a series of caves and overhangs in a bay in northwestern Zakynthos, southern Ionian Sea, in September 2023 and May 2024 was verified through opportunistic surveys and citizen science. The two locations are ca. 15 km apart and each is located in a different marine NATURA 2000 site. Appropriate conservation measures need to take into consideration the fact that seals do move between Kefalonia and Zakynthos (and possibly also other Ionian islands) and that the entire area has to be considered as a single “conservation unit” rather than elaborating protection measures on a small scale around a couple of resting and pupping caves alone. A full network of marine caves under strict protection surrounded by a buffer zone, taking into account at least the species’ home range, is needed in order to substantially cover the monk seal’s critical terrestrial habitats throughout the Ionian Sea.
