This paper highlights recent activities associated with the design of an uninstalled open fan propulsor for next-generation civil aircraft in the high-subsonic flight regime. The concept comprises a transonic propeller–rotor and a subsequent guide vane, which are both subject to pitch-variability in order to account for the strong variations in flight conditions over the entire mission profile. The engine-scale design aimed for high technological maturity and to comply with a high number of industrially relevant requirements to ensure a competitive design, meeting performance requirements in terms of high efficiency levels at cruise and maximum climb conditions, operability in terms of stability margins, good acoustic characteristics, and structural integrity. During the design iterations, rapid 3D-RANS-based optimisations were only used as a conceptual design tool to derive sensitivities, which were used to support and justify major design choices in addition to established relations from propeller theory and common design practice. These design-driven optimisation efforts were complemented with more sophisticated CFD analysis focusing on rotor tip vortex trajectories and resulting in unsteady blade row interaction to optimise the guide vane clipping, as well as investigations of the entire propulsor under angle-of-attack conditions. The resulting open fan design will be the very basis for wind tunnel experiments of a downscaled version at low and high speed. Full article

The low quality of mechanized tea harvesting in China’s hilly plantations, often caused by irregular canopy morphology, necessitates improved technology. This study addresses this issue by proposing a contact-based profiling mechanism and a corresponding control method for tea cutting platforms. This cutting platform mainly consists of a canopy profiling mechanism, a tea harvesting unit, a lifting actuator, and a control system, containing a mathematical model correlating the tea canopy pose with sensor signals. Following a theoretical analysis of key components of the profiling device, we determined their structural parameters. Subsequently, a profiling control strategy was formulated, and an automatic control system for the profiling cutting platform was developed. Finally, a prototype was constructed and subjected to experimental validation to assess the dynamic characteristics of its pose adjustment and its profiling-based harvesting performance. The results of this experiment illustrate that after implementing the profiling system, the proportion of time the cutting blade remained in an optimal cutting position increased from 26.5% to 95.0%, an improvement of 68.5%, demonstrating that the system successfully achieves its design objective of the adaptive profiling apparatus in response to variation in canopy morphology. In addition, the integrity rate of harvested tea leaves increased from 50.7% without profiling to 74.6% with profiling, an improvement of 47.1%, which indicates the good performance of this profiling cutting platform. Therefore, this research provides a valuable reference for the design of intelligent tea harvesting machinery for the hilly tea plantations in China. Full article

Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are increasingly utilized for decentralized power generation in urban and low-wind settings because of their omnidirectional wind capture and compact form. This study numerically investigates the aerodynamic performance of Darrieus-type VAWT blades as their curvature varies systematically from deeply convex (−50 mm) to strongly concave (+50 mm) across seven configurations. Using steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the frozen rotor method, simulations were conducted over a low Reynolds number range of 25 to 300, representative of small-scale and rooftop wind scenarios. The results indicate that deeply convex blades achieve the highest lift-to-drag ratio (Cl/Cd), peaking at 1.65 at Re = 25 and decreasing to 0.76 at Re = 300, whereas strongly concave blades show lower and more stable values ranging from 0.95 to 0.86. The power coefficient (Cp) and torque coefficient (Ct) similarly favor convex shapes, with Cp starting at 0.040 and remaining above 0.030, and Ct sustaining a robust 0.067 at low Re. Convex blades also maintain higher tip speed ratios (TSR), exceeding 1.30 at Re = 300. Velocity and pressure analyses reveal that convex profiles promote stable laminar flows and compact wakes, whereas concave geometries experience early flow separation and fluctuating torque. These findings demonstrate that optimizing the blade curvature toward convexity enhances the start-up, torque stability, and power output, providing essential design guidance for urban VAWTs operating under low Reynolds number conditions. Erosive wear from suspended sediments significantly threatens the structural integrity and efficiency of composite tidal turbine blades. This study develops a novel framework for predicting erosion in FR4 glass fibre-reinforced polymers (GFRPs)—materials increasingly adopted for marine renewable energy components. While erosion models exist for metals, their applicability to heterogeneous composites with unique failure mechanisms remains unvalidated. We calibrated the Oka erosion model specifically for FR4 using a complementary experimental–computational approach. High-velocity slurry jet tests (12.5 m/s) were conducted at a 90° impact angle, and erosion was quantified using both gravimetric mass loss and surface profilometry. It revealed a distinctive W-shaped erosion profile with 3–6 mm of peak material removal from the impingement centre. Concurrently, CFD simulations employing Lagrangian particle tracking were used to extract local impact velocities and angles. These datasets were combined in a constrained nonlinear optimisation scheme (SLSQP) to determine material-specific Oka model coefficients. The calibrated coefficients were further validated on an independent 45° impingement case (same particle size and flow conditions), yielding 0.0143 g/h predicted versus 0.0124 g/h measured (15.5% error). This additional case confirms the accuracy and feasibility of the predictive model under input conditions different from those used for calibration. The calibrated model achieved strong agreement with measured erosion rates (R2 = 0.844), successfully capturing the progressive matrix fragmentation and fibre debonding, the W-shaped erosion morphology, and highlighting key composite-specific damage mechanisms, such as fibre detachment and matrix fragmentation. By enabling the quantitative prediction of erosion severity and location, the calibrated model supports the optimisation of blade profiles, protective coatings, and maintenance intervals, ultimately contributing to the extended durability and performance of tidal turbine systems. This study presents a procedure and the output of calibration for the Oka erosion model, specifically for a composite material, providing a transferable methodology for erosion prediction in GFRPs subjected to abrasive marine flows. During the hydraulic performance experiment, significant vibration and noise were observed in the mixed-flow pump operating in the hump region. Cavitation occurrence in the impeller flow channels was confirmed through the transparent chamber. To analyze cavitation flow structure evolution in the mixed-flow pump, this paper integrates numerical and experimental approaches, capturing cavitation flow structures under the valley condition through high-speed photography technology. During the various stages of cavitation development, the cavitation forms are mostly vortex cavitation, cloud cavitation, and perpendicular vortex cavitation. Impeller rotation induces downstream transport of shedding cloud cavitation shedding structures. Flow blockage occurs when cavitation vortexes obstruct specific passages, accelerating cavitation growth that culminates in head reduction through energy dissipation mechanisms. Vortex evolution analysis revealed enhanced density of small-scale vortex structures with stronger localized core intensity in the impeller and diffuser. Despite larger individual vortex scales, reduced core intensity persists throughout the full flow domain. Concurrently, velocity profile characteristics across flow rates and blade sections (spanwise from tip to root) indicate heightened predisposition to flow separation, recirculation zones, and low-velocity regions during off-design operation. This study provides scientific guidance for enhancing anti-cavitation performance in the hump region. Full article

Sustainable product development demands components that last longer, consume less energy, and can be refurbished within circular supply chains. This study introduces a digital replica-based predictive prototyping workflow for industrial crusher blades that meets these goals. Six commercially used blade geometries (A–F) were recreated as high-fidelity finite-element models and subjected to an identical 5 kN cutting load. Comparative simulations revealed that a triple-edged hooked profile (Blade A) reduced peak von Mises stress by 53% and total deformation by 71% compared with a conventional flat blade, indicating lower drive-motor power and slower wear. To enable fast virtual prototyping and condition-based maintenance, deformation was subsequently predicted using a data-efficient machine-learning model. Multi-view image augmentation enlarged the experimental dataset from 6 to 60 samples, and an XGBoost regressor, trained on computer-vision geometry features and engineering parameters, achieved R2 = 0.996 and MAE = 0.005 mm in five-fold cross-validation. Feature-importance analysis highlighted applied stress, safety factor, and edge design as the dominant predictors. The integrated method reduces development cycles, reduces material loss via iteration, extends the life of blades, and facilitates refurbishment decisions, providing a foundation for future integration into digital twin systems to support sustainable product development and predictive maintenance in heavy-duty manufacturing. Background/Objectives: Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, causing irreversible vision loss. It typically begins with peripheral vision impairment and, in severe cases, leads to complete blindness. A major advancement in glaucoma treatment is Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), including trabecular bypass and ab interno trabeculectomy, which are generally used for mild to moderate glaucoma. This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of iStent micro-bypass implantation and Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) goniotomy combined with phacoemulsification in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). Methods: A review of recent studies was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. Both prospective and retrospective clinical studies were included. These MIGS methods were compared for reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) and medication burden at baseline and endpoint. Results: Eleven studies involving 1925 eyes were analyzed. All studies showed that iStent (first- and second-generation) micro-bypass implantation and KDB goniotomy reduced IOP, favoring the phaco-KDB group. Antiglaucoma medication use also decreased significantly. The success rate was sufficient and most complications were minimal. Conclusions: In conclusion, iStent implantation and KDB goniotomy offer a high safety profile, meaningful IOP reduction, a minimally invasive approach, and quick recovery. Full article

This study proposes an improved formulation of the blade element momentum theory (BEMT) to enhance its robustness and versatility for urban/advanced air mobility (UAM/AAM) applications. A new velocity factor was introduced to eliminate numerical singularity issue under low inflow velocity conditions. The BEMT framework was further extended and modified to account for non-axial inflow and descent flight conditions. The proposed approach was validated for an isolated propeller case by comparing the results with wind tunnel test data and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based on both the overset mesh and sliding mesh methods. The improved BEMT provided reliable accuracy even in low inflow velocity conditions where basic BEMT fails to converge, and yielded reasonable performance predictions with respect to the sliding mesh results. The practicality of the method was confirmed through further application studies such as analyzing on the tilt propeller of single-seated UAM along its mission profile and constructing a propeller performance database for the lift and propulsion propellers of a lift and cruise type 5-seated UAM. The improved BEMT exhibited satisfactory engineering-level accuracy for various flight conditions, with prediction errors within 14% of the CFD results. The results and observations indicate that the proposed BEMT framework is suitable for use in the early design stages, performance analysis, and construction of a performance database, for distributed propulsion aircraft, such as eVTOL and UAM/AAM. The development of compact high-speed low-pressure turbines with high efficiencies requires the characterization of the secondary flow structures and the interaction of cavity purge and leakage flows with the mainstream. During the SPLEEN project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020, the von Karman Institute and Safran Aircraft Engines performed detailed measurements of low-pressure turbines in engine-realistic conditions (i.e., low Reynolds and high exit Mach numbers considering background turbulence, wakes, row interactions, and leakages). The SPLEEN project is thus a fundamental contribution to the progress of high-speed low-pressure turbines by delivering unique experimental databases, essential to characterize the time-resolved 3D turbine flow, and new critical knowledge to mature the design of 3D technological effects. Being able to simulate the flow and associated losses in such a configuration is both challenging and of paramount importance to help the understanding of the flow physics complementing experimental measurements. This paper focuses on the high-fidelity numerical simulation of one of the SPLEEN configuration consisting of a linear blade cascade. The objective is to provide a validated numerical setup in terms of computational domain, boundary conditions, mesh resolution and numerical scheme to reproduce the experimental results. By mean of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations, the design point characterized by an exit Mach number of 0.9 and an exit Reynolds number of 70,000 with a turbulence level of 2.4% is investigated for the baseline configuration without purge and without wake generator. The results show that the considered computational domain and the associated inlet total pressure profile play a critical role on the development of secondary flows. The isentropic Mach number distribution around the blade is shown to be robust to the mesh and numerical scheme. The development of the wake and secondary flow fields are drastically influenced by the mesh resolution and numerical scheme, impacting the resulting losses. Full article

The detection of proteins plays a key role in disease diagnosis and drug development. For this, we numerically investigated a novel microfluidic motor actuated by an induced-charge electro-osmotic (ICEO) whirling flow. An alternating current–flow field effect transistor is engineered to modulate the profiles of ICEO streaming to stimulate and adjust the whirling flow in the circle microfluidic chamber. Based on this, we studied the distribution of an ICEO whirling flow in the detection chamber by tuning the fixed potential on the gate electrodes by the simulations. Then, we established a fluid–structure interaction model to explore the influence of blade structure parameters on the rotation performance of microfluidic motors. In addition, we investigated the rotation dependence of microfluidic motors on the potential drop between two driving electrodes and fixed potential on the gate electrodes. Next, we numerically explored the capability of these microfluidic motors for the detection of low-abundance proteins. Finally, we studied the regulating effect of potential drops between the driving electrodes on the detection performance of microfluidic motors by numerical simulations. Microfluidic motors actuated by an ICEO whirling flow hold good potential in environmental monitoring and disease diagnosis for the outstanding advantages of flexible controllability, a simple structure, and gentle work condition. This paper presents a CFD-based method for the aerodynamic design of a high-pressure compressor rotor blisk, taking into account manufacturing constraints. Focus is placed on the influence of geometric deviations caused by the dynamic constraints of the milling machine. Special attention is given to the leading edge region of the blade, where high curvature results in increased sensitivity in both aerodynamic behavior and manufacturability. The generic blisk geometry on which this study is based is characterized by an elliptical leading edge. For the optimization, the leading edge is described by Bézier curves that transition smoothly to the suction and pressure sides with continuous curvature and a non-dimensional length ratio. In steady-state RANS parameter studies, the length ratio is systematically varied while the chord length is kept constant. For the aerodynamic evaluation of the design’s key performance parameters such as blade pressure distribution, total pressure loss and compressor efficiency are considered. To evaluate the machine dynamics for a given design, compliance with the nominal feed rate and the deviation between the planned and actual tool tip positions were used as evaluation parameters. Compared to the reference geometry with an elliptical leading edge, the purely aerodynamic optimization achieved an isentropic efficiency improvement of +0.24 percentage points in the aerodynamic design point and a profile deviation improvement of 3 µm in the 99th quantile. The interdisciplinary optimization achieved an improvement of +0.20 percentage points and 30 µm, respectively. This comparative study illustrates the potential of multidisciplinary design approaches that balance aerodynamic performance goals with manufacturability via a novel approach for Design-to-Manufacture-to-Design. This study investigates the downstream wake characteristics of a helical hydrokinetic turbine through combined experimental and numerical analyses. A four-bladed helical turbine with a 20 cm rotor diameter and blockage ratio of 53.57% was tested in an open water channel under a flow rate of 180 m3/h, corresponding to a Reynolds number of approximately 90 × 103. Velocity measurements were collected at 13 downstream cross-sections using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter, with each point sampled repeatedly. Standard error analysis was applied to quantify measurement uncertainty. Complementary numerical simulations were conducted in ANSYS Fluent using a steady-state k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model, with a mesh of 4.7 million elements and mesh independence confirmed. Velocity deficit and turbulence intensity were employed as primary parameters to characterize the wake structure, while the analysis also focused on the recovery of cross-sectional velocity profiles to validate the extent of wake influence. Experimental results revealed a maximum velocity deficit of over 40% in the near-wake region, which gradually decreased with downstream distance, while turbulence intensity exceeded 50% near the rotor and dropped below 10% beyond 4 m. In comparison, numerical findings showed a similar trend but with lower peak velocity deficits of 16.6%. The root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) between experimental and numerical mean velocity profiles were calculated as 0.04486 and 0.03241, respectively, demonstrating reasonable agreement between the datasets. Extended simulations up to 30 m indicated that flow profiles began to resemble ambient conditions around 18–20 m. The findings highlight the importance of accurately identifying the downstream distance at which the wake effect fully dissipates, as this is crucial for determining appropriate inter-turbine spacing. The study also discusses potential sources of discrepancies between experimental and numerical results, as well as the limitations of the modeling approach. Full article

Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of the T106A low-pressure turbine were conducted for various turbulence intensities and length scales to investigate their effects on flow behaviour and transition. A source-term formulation of the synthetic eddy method (SEM) was implemented in the Nektar++ spectral/hp element framework to introduce anisotropic turbulence into the flow field. A single sponge layer was imposed, which covers the inflow and outflow regions just downstream and upstream of the inflow and outflow boundaries, respectively, to avoid acoustic wave reflections on the boundary conditions. Additionally, in the T106A model, mixed polynomial orders were utilized, as Nektar++ allows different polynomial orders for adjacent elements. A lower polynomial order was employed in the outflow region to further assist the sponge layer by coarsening the mesh and diffusing the turbulence near the outflow boundary. Thus, this study contributes to the development of a more robust and efficient model for high-fidelity simulations of turbine blades by enhancing stability and producing a more accurate flow field. The main findings are compared with experimental and DNS data, showing good agreement and providing new insights into the influence of turbulence length scales on flow separation, transition, wake behaviour, and loss profiles. This study investigates an aerodynamic optimization framework inspired by marine biological morphology, utilizing the sailfish profile as a basis for airfoil configuration. Through Latin hypercube experimental design combined with optimization algorithms, four key geometric variables governing the airfoil’s hydrodynamic characteristics were systematically analyzed. Parametric studies revealed that pivotal factors including installation angle significantly influenced the fluid dynamic performance metrics of lift generation and pressure drag. Response surface methodology was employed to establish predictive models for these critical performance indicators, effectively reducing computational resource consumption and experimental validation costs. The refined bio-inspired configuration demonstrated multi-objective performance improvements compared to the baseline configuration, validating the computational framework’s effectiveness for hydrodynamic profile optimization studies. Furthermore, a coaxial dual-rotor vertical axis turbine configuration was developed, integrating centrifugal and axial-flow energy conversion mechanisms through a shared drivetrain system. The centrifugal rotor component harnessed tidal current kinetic energy while the axial-flow rotor module captured wave-induced potential energy. Transient numerical simulations employing dynamic mesh techniques and user-defined functions within the Fluent environment were conducted to analyze rotor interactions. Results indicated the centrifugal subsystem demonstrated peak hydrodynamic efficiency at a 25° installation angle, whereas the axial-flow module achieves optimal performance at 35° blade orientation. Parametric optimization revealed maximum energy extraction efficiency for the centrifugal rotor occurs at λ = 1.25 tip-speed ratio under Re = 1.3 × 105 flow conditions, while the axial-flow counterpart attained optimal performance at λ = 1.5 with Re = 5.5 × 104. This synergistic configuration demonstrated complementary operational characteristics under marine energy conversion scenarios. Full article

This study investigated the performance of Savonius hydrokinetic turbine blades through three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations conducted at a fixed tip speed ratio of 0.87. A multi-factor experimental design was employed to construct 45 V-shaped rotor blade models, systematically examining the effects of a V-angle (30–140°) and straight-edge length (0.24 L–0.62 L) on hydrodynamic performance, where L = 25.46 mm (the baseline length of the straight edge). The results indicate that, as the V-angle and the straight-edge length vary independently, the performance of each blade first increases and then decreases. At TSR = 0.87, the maximum power coefficient (CP) of 0.2345 is achieved by the blade with a 70° V-Angle and a straight edge length of 0.335 L. Pressure and velocity field analyses reveal that appropriate geometric adjustments can optimize the high-pressure zone on the advancing blade and suppress negative torque on the returning blade, thereby increasing net output. The influence mechanisms of the V-angle and straight-edge length variations on blade performance were further explored and summarized through a comparative analysis of the vorticity characteristics. This study established a detailed performance dataset, providing theoretical and empirical support for V-shaped rotor blade design studies and offering engineering guidance for the effective use of low-flow hydropower.
