Cooperative breeding, or helping behavior, has long been recognized in birds. An ignored dichotomy, however, separates the helping found in many individuals of some long-lived, sedentary species from the helping occasionally found in the territories of isolated breeding pairs of some short-lived, long-distance migrant species. Both types of helping are called “cooperative breeding” in the literature. However, recognizing a dichotomy of “frequent” versus “infrequent” cooperative breeding would help justify the study of infrequent helping as a distinct discipline. Cooperative breeding in Wilson’s Warblers is infrequent, and among the unique behaviors found during this study were (1) solicitations by helper males, which aborted host male attacks and apparently initiated territorial acceptance, (2) an absence of sexual aggression between helper males and fertile host females, (3) attacks by helper males on intruding males during host female nest building, (4) helper males singing with impunity when host males were absent from territories, but being attacked when host males were present, and (5) a single male simultaneously serving as a helper in four adjacent host territories. Infrequent helping has essentially been ignored in studies and summaries of cooperative breeding. However, recognizing and studying infrequent helping as a distinct behavioral process could reveal interactions between helping and population ecology. Thus, infrequent cooperative breeding detected in a breeding population could reveal territorial saturation and could indicate that the population is likely ecologically healthy. Full article

Under large-scale farming conditions, automated sow estrus detection is crucial for improving reproductive efficiency, optimizing breeding management, and reducing labor costs. Conventional estrus detection relies heavily on human expertise, a practice that introduces subjective variability and consequently diminishes both accuracy and efficiency. Failure to identify estrus promptly and pair animals effectively lowers breeding success rates and drives up overall husbandry costs. In response to the need for the automated detection of sows’ estrus states in large-scale pig farms, this study proposes a method for detecting sows’ vulvar status and estrus based on multi-dimensional feature crossing. The method adopts a dual optimization strategy: First, the Bi-directional Feature Pyramid Network—Selective Decoding Integration (BiFPN-SDI) module performs the bidirectional, weighted fusion of the backbone’s low-level texture and high-level semantic, retaining the multi-dimensional cues most relevant to vulvar morphology and producing a scale-aligned, minimally redundant feature map. Second, by embedding a Spatially Enhanced Attention Module head (SEAM-Head) channel attention mechanism into the detection head, the model further amplifies key hyperemia-related signals, while suppressing background noise, thereby enabling cooperative and more precise bounding box localization. To adapt the model for edge computing environments, Masked Generative Distillation (MGD) knowledge distillation is introduced to compress the model while maintaining the detection speed and accuracy. Based on the bounding box of the vulvar region, the aspect ratio of the target area and the red saturation features derived from a dual-threshold method in the HSV color space are used to construct a lightweight Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) classification model for estrus state determination. The network was trained on 1400 annotated samples, which were divided into training, testing, and validation sets in an 8:1:1 ratio. On-farm evaluations in commercial pig facilities show that the proposed system attains an 85% estrus detection success rate. Following lightweight optimization, inference latency fell from 24.29 ms to 18.87 ms, and the model footprint was compressed from 32.38 MB to 3.96 MB in the same machine, while maintaining a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.941; the accuracy penalty from model compression was kept below 1%. Moreover, the model demonstrates robust performance under complex lighting and occlusion conditions, enabling real-time processing from vulvar localization to estrus detection, and providing an efficient and reliable technical solution for automated estrus monitoring in large-scale pig farms. Migratory flyways sustain waterbird populations by linking critical habitats across their annual cycle. However, stage-specific impacts of climate change on these habitats remain poorly understood. We integrated species distribution models with annual migration data from 30 Greater White-fronted Geese (Anser albifrons frontalis) to assess changes in habitat suitability, distributional shifts, and suitability fluctuations across breeding, stopover, and wintering stages under mid-century (2040–2060) climate scenarios. Suitability fluctuations were quantified as the coefficient of variation (CV) in habitat suitability between current and future projections. Projected habitat responses varied markedly across stages: breeding areas contracted by 29.9%, wintering areas expanded by 62.7%, and stopover sites showed minimal net change. Centroids of all habitats are projected to shift northward by mean distances of 125–492 km under future climate scenarios. Breeding habitats exhibited the greatest suitability fluctuations (CV=30–45; ~50% area affected under SSP585), followed by stopover and wintering grounds (CV ≈ 11), with 35.8% and 23.3% of their areas falling within high-fluctuation zones. These findings highlight the urgent need to prioritize breeding habitats, implement stage-specific conservation strategies, and enhance international cooperation to ensure the protection of waterbirds along the East Asian Flyway. Background/Objectives: Loss and fragmentation of habitat from agricultural conversion led to the near extirpation of the pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis Merriam, 1891) population in the Columbia Basin (CB) of Washington, USA. Recovery efforts began in 2002 and included captive breeding, translocations from other regions for genetic rescue, and reintroduction into native habitat in three sites: Sagebrush Flat (SBF), Beezley Hills (BH), and Chester Butte (CHB). Methods: We used noninvasive and invasive genetic sampling to evaluate demographic and population genetic parameters on three translocated populations of pygmy rabbits over eight years (2011–2020). For each population, our goal was to use fecal DNA sampling and 19 microsatellite loci to monitor spatial distribution, apparent survival rates, genetic diversity, reproduction, effective population size, and the persistence of CB ancestry. Over the course of this study, 1978 rabbits were reintroduced as part of a cooperative conservation effort between state and federal agencies. Results: Through winter and summer monitoring surveys, we detected 168 released rabbits and 420 wild-born rabbits in SBF, 13 released rabbits and 2 wild-born in BH, and 16 released rabbits in CHB. Observed heterozygosity (Ho) values ranged from 0.62–0.84 (SBF), 0.59–0.80 (BH), and 0.73–0.77 (CHB). Allelic richness (AR) ranged from 4.67–5.35 (SBF), 3.71–5.41 (BH), and 3.69–4.65 (CHB). Effective population (Ne) within SBF varied from 12.3 (2012) to 44.3 (2017). CB ancestry persisted in all three wild populations, ranging from 15 to 27%. CB ancestry persisted in 99% of wild-born juveniles identified in SBF. Apparent survival of juvenile rabbits differed across years (1–39%) and was positively associated with release date, release weight, and genetic diversity. Survival of adults (0–43%) was positively influenced by release day, with some evidence that genetic diversity also positively influenced adult apparent survival. Conclusions: Noninvasive genetic sampling has proven to be an effective and efficient tool in monitoring this reintroduced population, assessing both demographic and genetic factors. This data has helped managers address the goals of the Columbia Basin recovery program of establishing multiple sustainable wild populations within the sagebrush steppe habitat of Washington. The review summarizes the historical and current research on perennial grain breeding in Russia within the context of growing global interest in perennial crops. N.V. Tsitsin’s pioneering work in the 1930s produced the first wheat–wheatgrass amphiploids, which demonstrated the capacity to regrow after harvest and survive for 2–3 years. Subsequent research at the Main Botanical Garden in Moscow focused on characterizing Tsitsin’s material, selecting superior germplasm, and expanding genetic diversity through new cycles of hybridization and selection. This work led to the development of a new crop species, Trititrigia, and the release of cultivar ‘Pamyati Lyubimovoy’ in 2020, designed for dual-purpose production of high-quality grain and green biomass. Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) is native to Russia, where several forage cultivars have been released and cultivated. Two large-grain cultivars (Sova and Filin) were developed from populations provided by the Land Institute and are now grown by farmers. Perennial rye was developed through interspecific crosses between Secale cereale and S. montanum, demonstrating persistence for 2–3 years with high biomass production and grain yields of 1.5–2.0 t/ha. Hybridization between Sorghum bicolor and S. halepense resulted in two released cultivars of perennial sorghum used primarily for forage production under arid conditions. Russia’s agroclimatic diversity in agricultural production systems provides significant opportunities for perennial crop development. The broader scientific and practical implications of perennial crops in Russia extend to climate-resilient, sustainable agriculture and international cooperation in this emerging field. Full article

Pear (Pyrus communis L.) is a widely cultivated fruit tree species, valued for its significant economic impact and cultural relevance. The rise in commercial cultivars, characterized by genetic uniformity and high yield, is increasingly displacing traditional landraces. However, traditional varieties are highly adapted to local environmental conditions, having resulted from centuries of selection. In this study, 51 pear (Pyrus communis L.) accessions conserved in the Greek national germplasm collection were genotyped using eight SSR markers recommended by the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR). A total of 44 alleles were detected, including several private alleles, indicative of localized adaptation or potential genetic isolation. Analyses of population structure and genetic diversity, using Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA), UPGMA clustering, and Bayesian inference via STRUCTURE, uncovered distinct genetic groupings within the collection. The results revealed moderate genetic variability among the 51 accessions and identified some accessions with significant genetic divergence. These findings underscore the importance of conserving Greek pear germplasm, as it represents an ideal source of desirable traits, such as stress tolerance and fruit quality, which can be utilized in breeding programs. Motivated by the growth of global energy demand and the goal of carbon neutrality, lead-cooled fast reactors, which are core reactor types of fourth-generation nuclear energy systems, have become a global research hotspot due to their advantages of high safety, nuclear fuel breeding capability, and economic efficiency. However, its engineering implementation faces key challenges, such as material compatibility, closed fuel cycles, and irradiation performance of structures. This paper comprehensively reviews the latest progress in the core design of lead-cooled fast reactors in terms of the innovation of nuclear fuel, optimization of coolant, material adaptability, and design of assemblies and core structures. The research findings indicate remarkable innovation trends in the field of lead-cooled fast reactor core design, including optimizing the utilization efficiency of nuclear fuel based on the nitride fuel system and the traveling wave burnup theory, effectively suppressing the corrosion effect of liquid metal through surface modification technology and the development of ceramic matrix composites; replacing the lead-bismuth eutectic system with pure lead coolant to enhance economic efficiency and safety; and significantly enhancing the neutron economy and system integration degree by combining the collaborative design strategy of the open-type assembly structure and control drums. In the future, efforts should be made to overcome the radiation resistance of materials and liquid metal corrosion technology, develop closed fuel cycle systems, and accelerate the commercialization process through international standardization cooperation to provide sustainable clean energy solutions for basic load power supply, high-temperature hydrogen production, ship propulsion, and other fields. This paper explores the rice production changes spurred by the dissemination of Chinese rice technology across Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, and Tanzania (one group of the treated countries) through hybrid rice trials conducted from 1990 to 2010. The Difference-in-Differences model was applied for the above group. Another group, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Rwanda, and Togo, was designated the control group, which did not receive treatment. Through hybrid rice trials, Sino–Africa cooperation has changed rice production levels. The Chinese rice dissemination technology performed well in terms of increasing rice yield (with an average of approximately 8.5 tons per hectare in the treated countries against 3.5 tons per hectare in the control countries) and ensuring rice-related self-sufficiency in Africa. The results of an empirical study show that, among the countries treated, Egypt remains the only African country to have established hybrid rice-breeding programs and released and produced domestically hybrid varieties. A redesign of the pattern of rice technology dissemination in Sino–Africa cooperation could, in the long term, improve rice production and productivity in the beneficiary countries. Full article

This study investigates the impact of rising sea surface temperature (SST), increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and precipitation variability (PREC) on Korea’s coastal and offshore fisheries production (COFP) from 1993 to 2023 using an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. The results confirm a long-run cointegration relationship, where a 1% increase in SST, CO2, and PREC is associated with respective declines of 3.52%, 0.82%, and 0.34% in COFP, respectively, suggesting persistent negative effects of ocean warming, acidification, and hydrological variability on fisheries production. Robustness checks using Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Canonical Cointegrating Regression (CCR) validate the stability of the ARDL results. The short-run analysis reveals that past production levels significantly influence current COFP, while SST fluctuations exhibit delayed but economically meaningful effects. The error correction term (−0.75, p < 0.01) confirms a rapid adjustment toward equilibrium following short-term deviations. These findings underscore the necessity of climate-resilient fisheries management. Policy recommendations include adaptive harvest regulations, climate-integrated stock assessments, and enhanced international cooperation for transboundary fish stocks. Additionally, expanding Marine Protected Areas, promoting climate-resilient aquaculture, and strengthening stock enhancement programs through selective breeding and seed release of climate-adapted species are essential for sustaining fisheries under climate change. The development of the natural rubber planting industry is facing the dual challenges of protecting ecology and maintaining supply. As an effective means to internalize ecological externalities, eco-compensation is an important way to realize the sustainable development of the natural rubber industry. From the perspective of industrial development, an eco-compensation policy framework for natural rubber with a production and ecological win–win outcome was constructed. The results showed that natural rubber eco-compensation was a large-scale public institutional arrangement with the following characteristics: 1. The goals were to protect tropical rainforest and rubber garden ecology, maintain the natural rubber supply and improve the livelihoods of agricultural households. 2. The participants included the government, enterprises and agricultural households. 3. The main methods included financial transfer payments, production insurance and cooperative operations. 4. The opportunity costs of agricultural household livelihood transformation and the positive expected returns of enterprises were used as compensation standards. 5. The compensation effectiveness was evaluated through the comprehensive monitoring of tropical rainforest ecology, the rubber garden environment, land use, the planting distribution, household income and production modes. On this basis, specific policy recommendations, including developing combined planting–breeding modes, establishing a strict supervision system and setting up special expert advisory teams, were put forward. This study provides not only a theoretical basis for the design of natural rubber eco-compensation policies but also a reference for the construction of eco-compensation market mechanisms in various fields. Global geographical, climatic, and ecological diversity has given rise to a wealth of domestic animals, which are essential for food security and agricultural sustainability. Since the 1960s, these critical genetic resources have declined significantly due to overdevelopment, ecological degradation, and climate change, posing a serious threat to global food security. In the face of these challenges, we emphasize the critical importance of promoting indigenous livestock and poultry germplasm resources in biodiversity conservation to enhance the adaptability and resilience of agricultural systems. To promote the sustainable management and conservation of genetic resources, a multistakeholder international cooperation framework is needed. Globally, many national and international institutions have initiated a variety of conservation measures, legislation, and technical strategies. In particular, genebanks play an indispensable role in the conservation of important livestock and poultry genetic resources. These banks not only aid in maintaining biodiversity but also provide valuable genetic material for future breeding programmes and scientific research. Through systematic collection, conservation and evaluation, genebanks ensure the long-term availability and sustainable use of genetic resources and provide an important foundation for addressing global environmental change and agricultural challenges. In recent decades, it has become apparent that during parturition events in a number of social mammals, social support behaviours from group mates can be directed to parturient females (and their newborn neonates). Such behaviour has been documented in diverse taxa, across non-human primates, Elephantidae, Cetacea, and Chiroptera, living in a range of social group organisations, from matrilineal groups to cooperatively breeding groups and multi-male, multi-female groups. Since sociality, in association with parturition, has been demonstrated to confer several health benefits to human mothers and neonates, here, we also consider the potential adaptive significance of social support behaviours for other, non-human, social mammals. If appropriate social environments reduce a parturient female’s dystocia risk and improve her responsiveness to her neonate following a successful birth, then the impacts of the peri-parturient social environment may ultimately have far-reaching impacts on the mother–neonate dyad’s fitness. This seems a logical sequela since the health condition of a neonate at birth and the successful establishment of a strong maternal-neonate bond are often the most critical factors influencing mammalian offspring survival to independence. The principles of kin selection and alliance enhancement may serve to explain the fitness benefits to individuals who support group mates during their parturition and thus the selective advantage conferred to those exhibiting such behaviours. Older, multiparous females appear to hold a particularly important role in the assistance they can provide during the parturition of their group mates, given their greater level of experience of these events. Furthermore, a social birth may have an important influence on horizontal information transfer within a group. In particular, in long-lived, cognitively advanced social mammals (e.g., non-human primates, Elephantidae, Cetacea), witnessing birth events, early neonate responses, and maternal care, and engaging in allomaternal care with young neonates may be essential for nulliparous females’ normal development. Such events may serve to prepare them for their own parturition and may improve their own parturition-related survivorship and that of their first-born offspring. Thus, it is vital that a better understanding is gained of the importance and salient features of social births in improving the health and survivorship outcomes for both the mother and her offspring in highly social species. The aim of this commentary is to assemble our current understanding of these highly interconnected themes. We suggest in the future, insights gained through observation of non-human social parturition in domestic and non-domestic species, by a wide and highly interdisciplinary range of stakeholders (including zookeepers, wildlife tourism guides, breeders of domestic animals, indigenous people, and ethologists), will be critical for enhancing our understanding of the influence of social environment on this rarely witnessed, yet highly important life event. The current planting of economically important timber species, such as Douglas-fir, mainly relies on genetically improved seeds from seed orchards. However, published research on the effects of climate change has largely focused on natural populations. To bridge this gap, data from 80 cooperative second-cycle coastal Douglas-fir progeny tests across eight breeding zones in western Washington and Oregon were analyzed. Climate transfer functions for age-12 growth were derived, showing significant results for the US Pacific Northwest. Region-specific transfer functions (Coast, Inland, and Cascade) displayed stronger correlations. Mean annual temperature and mean coldest month temperature were the most important climatic variables explaining growth. The study found that populations from slightly warmer areas tended to grow better but moving populations from colder to warmer areas by 2 °C (analogous to projected global warming) would result in an 8% genetic loss in age-12 height and a 25% genetic loss in age-12 volume. However, substantial diversity in climatic response was found among full-sib families within large breeding zones, suggesting that breeding and selecting suitable families for future climatic conditions within breeding zones is feasible. The study discusses potential strategies to adapt current breeding programs to address the impacts of future climate change while maintaining high population growth rates in Douglas-fir breeding programs. It is still largely unknown to what extent domestication, ancestry, or recent functional selection are responsible for the behavioral differences in whether dogs look back to a human when presented with a difficult task. Here, we tested whether this ubiquitous human-related response of companion dogs would appear differently in subjects that were selected for either cooperative or independent work tasks. We tested N = 71 dogs from 18 cooperative and 18 independent breeds. Subjects learned in a five-trial warming-up phase that they could easily obtain the reward from a container. In trial six, the reward became impossible to take out from the locked container. When the task was easy, both breed groups behaved similarly, and their readiness to approach the container did not differ between the last ‘solvable’ and the subsequent ‘unsolvable’ trial. Task focus, looking at the container, touching the container for the first time, or interacting with the container with a paw or nose did not differ between the breed groups, indicating that their persistence in problem solving was similar. However, in the ‘unsolvable’ trial, cooperative dogs alternated their gaze more often between the container and the humans than the independent dogs did. The frequency of looking back was also higher in cooperative dogs than in the independent breeds. These are the first empirical results that suggest, in a balanced, representative sample of breeds, that the selection for different levels of cooperativity in working dogs could also affect their human-dependent behavior in a generic problem-solving situation. Vigilance is a common behavioural adaptation to increase the chances of detecting predators before it is too late to escape. Behavioural traits are often repeatable among individuals over the long term, suggesting differences in personality. Earlier studies have documented individual consistency in the time allocated to vigilance. However, little is known about individual consistency in the ways vigilance is achieved from one moment to another and whether different patterns of vigilance among individuals are associated with survival. We aimed to determine whether sentinels of a cooperative breeder showed individual consistency in their vigilance and if individual variation was related to annual survival. During sentinel bouts from vantage points, Florida scrub-jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) turn their heads from side to side to monitor their surroundings. Over three field seasons, we found that the head-turning frequency was repeatable in breeders but not in juveniles or non-breeding helpers. The moderate repeatability in breeders was not related to survival. Our results suggest that the head-turning frequency in sentinels of the Florida scrub-jay is repeatable in breeders but not in less experienced juveniles or helpers and, therefore, likely becomes more repeatable as individuals age. The assumption that individual variation in vigilance is related to survival was unsupported in our study and requires further study. Full article
