Machine learning (ML) has established itself as an innovative tool in sustainable forest management, essential for tackling critical challenges such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Through the analysis of large volumes of data from satellites, drones, and sensors, machine learning facilitates everything from precise forest health assessments and real-time deforestation detection to wildfire prevention and habitat mapping. Other significant advancements include species identification via computer vision and predictive modeling to optimize reforestation and carbon sequestration. Projects like SILVANUS serve as practical examples of this approach’s success in combating wildfires and restoring ecosystems. However, for these technologies to reach their full potential, obstacles like data quality, ethical issues, and a lack of collaboration between different fields must be overcome. The solution lies in integrating the power of machine learning with ecological expertise and local community engagement. This partnership is the path forward to preserve biodiversity, combat climate change, and ensure a sustainable future for our forests. Full article

In June 2025, a two-year-old female brown bear (Ursus arctos) appeared in the streets of Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania. This sparked significant public, institutional, and media responses. This paper analyzes the event through ecological, social, and symbolic lenses to explore how large carnivores are perceived and managed at the wildland–urban interface. Through an examination of media reports, policy responses, and theoretical perspectives from environmental sociology and narrative studies, we explore how the bear’s presence became a public safety concern and a culturally significant symbol. Public discourse revealed tensions between institutional authority and local ethical values, as evidenced by hunters’ refusal to carry out a kill permit. This case also illustrates the growing use of technology, such as drones, in urban wildlife management. The bear’s peaceful departure reinforced the effectiveness of nonlethal conflict resolution. This case underscores the importance of integrating ecological realities with social perceptions, media framing, and symbolic interpretations in large carnivore conservation. It emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary approaches that address the emotional and cultural aspects of human–wildlife interactions in rapidly urbanizing areas. Full article

Background: Drones are rapidly establishing themselves as one of the most critical technologies. Robotics, automated machinery, intelligent manufacturing, and other high-impact technological research and applications bring up pressing ethical, social, legal, and political issues. Methods: The present research aims to present the results of a qualitative investigation that looked at perceptions of the growing socio-ethical conundrums surrounding the development of drone applications. Results: According to the obtained results, participants often share similar opinions about whether different drone applications are approved by the public, regardless of their level of experience. Perceptions of drone applications appear consistent across various levels of expertise. The most notable associations are with military objectives (73%), civil protection (61%), and passenger transit and medical purposes (56%). Applications that have received high approval include science (8.70), agriculture (8.78), and disaster management (8.87), most likely due to their obvious social benefits and reduced likelihood of ethical challenges. Conclusions: The study’s findings can help shape the debate on drone acceptability in particular contexts, inform future research on promoting value-sensitive development in society more broadly, and guide researchers and decision-makers on the use of drones, as people’s attitudes, understanding, and usage will undoubtedly impact future advancements in this technology. This paper explores the intersection of blockchain technology and smart cities to support the transition toward decentralized, secure, and sustainable urban systems. Drawing on co-word analysis and BERTopic modeling applied to the literature published between 2016 and 2025, this study maps the thematic and technological evolution of blockchain in urban environments. The co-word analysis reveals blockchain’s foundational role in enabling secure and interoperable infrastructures, particularly through its integration with IoT, edge computing, and smart contracts. These systems underpin critical urban services such as transportation, healthcare, energy trading, and waste management by enhancing data privacy, authentication, and system resilience. The application of BERTopic modeling further uncovers a shift from general technological exploration to more specialized and sector-specific applications. These include real-time mobility systems, decentralized healthcare platforms, peer-to-peer energy exchanges, and blockchain-enabled drone coordination. The results demonstrate that blockchain increasingly supports cross-sectoral innovation, enabling transparency, trust, and circular flows in urban systems. Overall, the current study identifies blockchain as both a technological backbone and an ethical infrastructure for smart cities that supports secure, adaptive, and sustainable urban development. Drones are becoming increasingly valuable tools in wildlife studies due to their ability to access remote areas and offer high-resolution information with minimal human interference. Their application is, however, causing concern regarding wildlife disturbance. This review synthesizes the existing literature on how animals within terrestrial, aerial, and aquatic environments are impacted by drone disturbance in relation to operational variables, sensory stimulation, species-specific sensitivity, and physiological and behavioral responses. We found that drone altitude, speed, approach distance, and noise levels significantly influence wildlife responses, with some species exhibiting increased vigilance, flight responses, or physiological stress. Environmental context and visual cues are also involved in species detection of drones and disturbance thresholds. Although the short-term response to behavior change has been well documented, long-term consequences of repeated drone exposure remain poorly known. This paper identifies the necessity for continued research into drone–wildlife interactions, with an emphasis on the requirement to minimize disturbance by means of improved flight parameters and technology. The Internet of Drones (IoD) integrates autonomous aerial platforms with security, logistics, agriculture, and disaster relief. Decision-making in IoD suffers in real-time adaptability, platform interoperability, and scalability. Conventional decision frameworks with heuristic algorithms and narrow Artificial Intelligence (AI) falter in complex environments. To mitigate these, in this study, an augmented decision model is proposed, combining large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for enhancing IoD intelligence. Centralized intelligence is achieved by processing environment factors, mission logs, and telemetry, with real-time adaptability. Efficient retrieval of contextual information through RAG is merged with LLMs for timely, correct decision-making. Contextualized decision-making vastly improves adaptability in uncertain environments for a drone network. With LLMs and RAG, the model introduces a scalable, adaptable IoD operations solution. It enables the development of autonomous aerial platforms in industries, with future work in computational efficiency, ethics, and extending operational environments. In-depth analysis with the collection of drone telemetry logs and operational factors was conducted. Decision accuracy, response time, and contextual relevance were measured to gauge system effectiveness. The model’s performance increased remarkably, with a BLEU of 0.82 and a cosine similarity of 0.87, proving its effectiveness for operational commands. Decision latency averaged 120 milliseconds, proving its suitability for real-time IoD use cases. Full article

Cognitive warfare is a matter of concern due to its impact on people’s minds and decision-making. The manifestation of wars and the deliberate attempts of nations to use AI technologies to their advantage in outsmarting people’s minds cannot be ignored from a homiletical perspective. This article argues that AI (Artificial Intelligence), GAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence), and ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) offer tremendous possibilities to enhance interplay with humans. Viewed through the lenses of philosophy and ethics, it becomes evident that people providing AI technologies with data engage with technology from an intrinsic worldview. The provision of information and decision-making through AI technologies prompts us to consider people’s reasoning and responsibility. The harmful consequences of killer robots and the use of facial recognition to reach human targets raise deep ethical questions. The author contends that listeners to sermons are exposed to the age of homo digitalis and are tasked with making sense of what is happening in the world. When homiletical praxeology remains silent on the injustices and undignified practices of cognitive warfare and drone use, without proclaiming the values of the gospel and the Kingdom, listeners become reliant on alternative sources of information. In the normative section of this article, the importance of demolishing arguments and pretensions that oppose the knowledge of God and taking every thought captive to make it obedient to God’s will is emphasised. The article concludes with a call for homiletics to engage with AI technologies rather than ignore them. By utilising technological advantages without undermining the paramount value of preaching within the unique contexts of faith communities, listeners may become more open to the gospel and experience transformation in their minds, particularly regarding warfare. This study explores the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on structural health monitoring (SHM), a critical aspect of infrastructure maintenance and safety. This study begins with a bibliometric analysis to identify current research trends, key contributing countries, and emerging topics in AI-integrated SHM. We examine seven core areas where AI significantly advances SHM capabilities: (1) data acquisition and sensor networks, highlighting improvements in sensor technology and data collection; (2) data processing and signal analysis, where AI techniques enhance feature extraction and noise reduction; (3) anomaly detection and damage identification using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) for precise diagnostics; (4) predictive maintenance, using AI to optimize maintenance scheduling and prevent failures; (5) reliability and risk assessment, integrating diverse datasets for real-time risk analysis; (6) visual inspection and remote monitoring, showcasing the role of AI-powered drones and imaging systems; and (7) resilient and adaptive infrastructure, where AI enables systems to respond dynamically to changing conditions. This review also addresses the ethical considerations and societal impacts of AI in SHM, such as data privacy, equity, and transparency. We conclude by discussing future research directions and challenges, emphasizing the potential of AI to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of infrastructure systems. Full article

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has fundamentally transformed precision agriculture by enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and data-driven decision making. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the integration of multispectral, hyperspectral, and thermal sensors mounted on drones with AI-driven algorithms to transform modern farms. Such technologies support crop health monitoring in real time, resource management, and automated decision making, thus improving productivity with considerably reduced resource consumption. However, limitations include high costs of operation, limited UAV battery life, and the need for highly trained operators. The novelty of this study lies in the thorough analysis and comparison of all UAV-AI integration research, along with an overview of existing related works and an analysis of the gaps. Furthermore, practical solutions to technological challenges are summarized to provide insights into precision agriculture. This paper also discusses the barriers to UAV adoption and suggests practical solutions to overcome existing limitations. Finally, this paper outlines future research directions, which will discuss advances in sensor technology, energy-efficient AI models, and how these aspects influence ethical considerations regarding the use of UAVs in agricultural research. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and techniques has provided a significant advance in drone technology. Besides the military applications, drones are being increasingly used for logistics and cargo transportation, agriculture, construction, security and surveillance, exploration, and mobile wireless communication. The synergy between drones and AI has led to notable progress in the autonomy of drones, which have become capable of completing complex missions without direct human supervision. This study of the state of the art examines the impact of AI on improving drone autonomous behavior, covering from automation to complex real-time decision making. The paper provides detailed examples of the latest developments and applications. Ethical and regulatory challenges are also considered for the future evolution of this field of research, because drones with AI have the potential to greatly change our socioeconomic landscape. The application of drones to assist with healthcare delivery has grown rapidly over the last decade. This industry is supported by a growing research field, and we have undertaken a systematic review of the published literature. Web-based searches returned 290 relevant manuscripts published between 2010 and 2024. We applied Topic Modelling to this corpus of literature, which examines word association and connectedness within the research papers. The modelling identified two emerging research themes with little connection between them: those who used drones to deliver time-critical medical items and those who used drones to deliver non-time-critical medical items. The former was in response to medical emergencies, while the latter was for enhancing resilience in the healthcare supply chain. The topics within these research themes exhibited notable differences. The delivery of time-critical medical items theme comprised the topics of ‘Emergency Response’, ‘Defibrillator and Organ Delivery’, and ‘Search and Rescue’, whilst non-time-critical delivery researched the topics of ‘Supply Chain Optimisation’ and ‘Cost-Effectiveness’, ‘Overcoming Remoteness’, and ‘Pandemic Response’. Research on ‘Engineering and Design Considerations’ and ‘Ethical and Social Considerations’ cut across both research themes. We undertook further analysis to assess research topic alignment and identify knowledge gaps. We found that efforts are needed to establish a more standardised terminology for better alignment across the two emerging research themes. Future studies should focus on evaluating the impact of drone delivery on patient health using systematic methods. Additionally, exploring the economic viability of drone-based health services and addressing regulatory barriers are crucial for efficient and effective drone deployment in healthcare delivery systems. As drone technology is rapidly becoming accessible to school children in terms of both low cost and ease-of-use, primary and secondary school teachers are beginning to consider where modern drones can play an important role in schooling. To date, there is little empirical education research printed in the education research literature guiding innovative curriculum developers in the incipient domain of drone education. As a result, teachers interested in including emerging technologies in their classrooms are often at a loss of where to begin. Through clinical interviews with schoolteachers in the United States, our study identified five readily accessible “departure points” to include drones in contemporary STEM and vocational technology (CTE) school classrooms that help teachers address common curricular goals. Taken together, these interviews reveal that teachers using drones follow one of several distinct pathways as a first step toward achieving a widespread goal of teaching students to use modern technologies to construct, pursue, and communicate findings of fruitful research inquiries—the prevalence of which is not reflected in a comprehensive review of the literature. The five dominant pathways for starting a successful drone education emerging from the interview data were as follows: timed racing trials; precision flight obstacle courses; computer coding; videography; and domain-specific knowledge of drone operation laws and ethics. In order to mitigate the risk of irreversible drowning injuries, this study introduces an enhanced YOLOv5 algorithm aimed at improving the efficacy of indoor swimming pool drowning detection and facilitating the timely rescue of endangered individuals. To simulate drowning and swimming positions accurately, four swimmers were deliberately chosen and observed, with monitoring conducted by drones flying above the swimming pool. The study was approved by the ethics committee of our institution, with the registration number 2022024. The images captured by the drones underwent a meticulous evaluation, and only those deemed suitable were selected to construct the self-made dataset, comprising a total of 8572 images. Furthermore, two enhancements were implemented in the YOLOv5 algorithm. Firstly, the inclusion of the ICA module strengthened category classification and the localization of water behavioral postures, which is improved from the coordinated attention module (CA). Secondly, the PAN module was replaced with the bi-directional feature pyramid network (BiFPN). Subsequently, the improved YOLOv5 algorithm underwent training using the self-made dataset. Evaluation of the algorithm’s performance revealed a notably improved detection accuracy rate, recall rate, and an impressive mean Average Precision (mAP) score of 98.1%, 98.0%, and 98.5%, respectively. Our paper introduces the improved YOLOv5 algorithm, surpassing the original YOLOv5 algorithm in terms of recognition accuracy for instances of drowning. Full article

The rapid rise of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and their integration into smart city initiatives has sparked a surge of research interest in a broad array of thematic areas. This study undertakes a comprehensive review of recent scholarly literature to elucidate key research trends and innovative strategies for applying UAVs in smart cities. Through a detailed descriptive analysis, we identify prominent research clusters, including integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) with UAVs, applying artificial intelligence in surveillance, exploring the Internet of Drones (IoD), and cybersecurity challenges faced by smart cities. It is observed that security and privacy concerns within smart cities receive the most scholarly attention, indicating their central importance in shaping smart city strategies. The review of innovative strategies reveals a strong emphasis on leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance UAV capabilities and ensure drones’ efficient, secure, and ethical deployment in smart city environments. This study provides crucial insights that inform the design of future research and policies in the burgeoning field of smart city development through the use of UAVs. Full article

Drones are increasingly being introduced to support healthcare delivery around the world. Most Drones for Health projects are currently in the pilot phase, where frontline staff are testing the feasibility of implementing drones into their healthcare system. Many of these projects are happening in remote localities where populations have been historically under-served within national healthcare systems. Currently, there exists limited drone-specific guidance on best practices for engaging individuals in decision-making about drone use in their communities. Towards supporting the development of such guidance, this paper focuses on the issue of obtaining community and individual consent for implementing Drones for Health projects. This paper is based on original qualitative research involving semi-structured interviews (N = 16) with program managers and implementation staff hired to work on health-related projects using drone technologies. In this paper, we introduce a scenario described by one participant to highlight the ethical and practical challenges associated with the implementation and use of drones for health-related purposes. We explore the ethical and practical complexities of obtaining informed consent from individuals who reside in communities where Drones for Health projects are implemented. Full article
