In the field of Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV), research on advanced perception technologies is crucial for enhancing their intelligence and autonomy. In particular, laser point cloud registration technology serves as a foundation for improving the navigation accuracy and environmental awareness of ASV in complex environments. To address the issues of low computational efficiency, insufficient robustness, and incompatibility with low-power devices in laser point cloud registration technology for ASV, a novel point cloud matching method has been proposed. The proposed method includes laser point cloud data processing, feature extraction based on an improved Fast Point Feature Histogram (FPFH), followed by a two-step registration process using SAC-IA (Sample Consensus Initial Alignment) and Small_GICP (Small Generalized Iterative Closest Point). Registration experiments conducted on the KITTI benchmark dataset and the Pohang Canal dataset demonstrate that the relative translation error (RTE) of the proposed method is 16.41 cm, which is comparable to the performance of current state-of-the-art point cloud registration algorithms. Furthermore, deployment experiments on multiple low-power computing devices showcase the performance of the proposed method under low computational capabilities, providing reference metrics for engineering applications in the field of autonomous navigation and perception research for ASV. Texture, a significant visual attribute in images, plays an important role in many pattern recognition tasks. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been among the most effective methods for texture analysis, alternative architectures such as Vision Transformers (ViTs) have recently demonstrated superior performance on a range of visual recognition problems. However, the suitability of ViTs for texture recognition remains underexplored. In this work, we investigate the capabilities and limitations of ViTs for texture recognition by analyzing 25 different ViT variants as feature extractors and comparing them to CNN-based and hand-engineered approaches. Our evaluation encompasses both accuracy and efficiency, aiming to assess the trade-offs involved in applying ViTs to texture analysis. Our results indicate that ViTs generally outperform CNN-based and hand-engineered models, particularly when using strong pre-training and in-the-wild texture datasets. Notably, BeiTv2-B/16 achieves the highest average accuracy (85.7%), followed by ViT-B/16-DINO (84.1%) and Swin-B (80.8%), outperforming the ResNet50 baseline (75.5%) and the hand-engineered baseline (73.4%). As a lightweight alternative, EfficientFormer-L3 attains a competitive average accuracy of 78.9%. In terms of efficiency, although ViT-B and BeiT(v2) have a higher number of GFLOPs and parameters, they achieve significantly faster feature extraction on GPUs compared to ResNet50. These findings highlight the potential of ViTs as a powerful tool for texture analysis while also pointing to areas for future exploration, such as efficiency improvements and domain-specific adaptations. With the advancement of deep engineering (e.g., deep resource development, tunnel excavation), the deep rock mass is in a high in situ stress environment, leading to a critical engineering challenge: traditional blasting often causes disordered blast-induced crack propagation (severe deviation from the target direction) and unstable expansion rates, which reduce the directional blasting efficiency, trigger over-excavation/under-excavation, and threaten construction safety. Water jet notching is a promising directional control technique, but its coupling effect with vertical stress (a dominant component of in situ stress) on blasting crack characteristics remains unclear—hindering its application in deep engineering. To address this problem, reveal the law of blasting crack expansion in deep rock, explore the mechanism of controlled blasting for deep rock fractures, and clarify the effect of deep environmental water jet notching on the blasting effect, this study carried out experimental research on the crack extension velocity of the directional blasting of prefabricated grooved concrete under vertical stress (based on the crack extension strain gauge test system and perimeter pressure loading system) and verified the results by numerical simulations. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) Within the experimental test range, with the increase in vertical stress, the deviation of cracks from the prefabricated groove center in the vertical direction gradually decreases, indicating that vertical stress can further guide the direction of the crack extension on the basis of prefabricated grooves. (2) The experimentally measured crack expansion velocity shows a decreasing trend with the increase in the crack expansion length; the average crack expansion velocity is enhanced with the increase in vertical stress, while the change in the crack tip velocity is suppressed as a whole and gradually tends to be flat at approximately 555.6 m/s. (3) Numerical simulation results (using a model replicating the experimental concrete specimens) further verify the accuracy of the experimental results: the increase in vertical stress further guides the vertical crack expansion, enhances the average crack expansion velocity, and slows down the decay of the crack extension velocity. The core value of this research lies in “converting theoretical experimental data into engineering control capabilities.” Its findings can be directly applied to key areas such as deep resource development, tunnel engineering, and water conservancy projects. While ensuring engineering safety, improving efficiency, and reducing costs, it also provides scientific support for engineering construction in complex geological conditions. Full article

Active clearance control (ACC) is an effective means of reducing engine fuel consumption. Recently, an innovative fuel-cooled ACC (FCACC) scheme has been developed to improve engine performance by utilizing fuel from the aircraft fuel thermal management system (AFTMS) to precool bleed air, creating a trade-off between fuel supply and thermal management capabilities. To maximize flight endurance through FCACC, this paper firstly elucidates its mechanism for conserving both fuel and fuel heat sink when the thermal management flow path (TMFP) operates in the full recirculation state (FRS), benefiting from the configuration of the recirculation fuel supply branch (RFSB). Calculation results indicate that flight endurance can be extended by 2.28% and 11.62% under the standard condition and extreme mission, respectively. Then, the impact of further utilizing fuel heat sink on flight endurance at the critical transition from FRS to partial recirculation state (PRS) is investigated. In this case, thermal failure, rather than fuel depletion, dominates and shortens flight endurance. Based on this, a novel dynamic regulation strategy for fuel/bleed air heat exchange is established, which is applicable across various operating conditions. Finally, a common mission demonstrates that FCACC can reduce takeoff weight by 20.33 kg, enabling the aircraft to carry additional devices. Full article

This paper proposes a novel intelligent optimization algorithm, ICPMSHOA, that effectively balances population diversity and convergence performance by integrating an iterative chaotic map with infinite collapses (ICMIC), centroid opposition-based learning, and periodic mutation strategy. To verify its performance, we adopted benchmark functions from the IEEE CEC 2017 and 2022 standard test suites and compared it with six algorithms, including OOA and BWO. The results show that ICPMSHOA has significant improvements in convergence speed, global search capability, and stability, with statistically significant advantages. Furthermore, the algorithm performs outstandingly in three practical engineering constrained optimization problems: Haverly’s pooling problem, hybrid pooling–preparation problem, and optimization design of industrial refrigeration systems. This study confirms that ICPMSHOA provides efficient and reliable solutions for complex optimization tasks and has strong practical value in engineering scenarios. Full article

Endolysins, phage-derived enzymes capable of lysing bacterial cell walls, hold significant promise as novel antimicrobials against resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. In this study, we undertook an integrative approach combining extensive in silico analyses and experimental validation to characterize the novel endolysin LysPALS22. Initially, sixteen endolysin sequences were selected based on documented lytic activity and enzymatic diversity, and subjected to multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis, which revealed highly conserved catalytic and binding domains, particularly localized to the N-terminal region, underscoring their functional importance. Building upon these sequence insights, we generated three-dimensional structural models using Swiss-Model, EBI-EMBL, and AlphaFold Colab, where comparative evaluation via Ramachandran plots and ERRAT scores identified the Swiss-Model prediction as the highest quality structure, featuring over 90% residues in favored conformations and superior atomic interaction profiles. Leveraging this validated model, molecular docking studies were conducted in PyRx with AutoDock Vina, performing blind docking of key peptidoglycan-derived ligands such as N-Acetylmuramic Acid-L-Alanine, which exhibited the strongest binding affinity (−7.3 kcal/mol), with stable hydrogen bonding to catalytic residues ASP46 and TYR61, indicating precise substrate recognition. Visualization of docking poses using Discovery Studio further confirmed critical hydrophobic and polar interactions stabilizing ligand binding. Subsequent molecular dynamics simulations validated the stability of the LysPALS22–NAM-LA complex, showing minimal structural fluctuations, persistent hydrogen bonding, and favorable interaction energies throughout the 100 ns trajectory. Parallel to computational analyses, LysPALS22 was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pichia pastoris (P. pastoris), where SDS-PAGE and bicinchoninic acid assays validated successful protein production; notably, the P. pastoris-expressed enzyme displayed an increased molecular weight (~45 kDa) consistent with glycosylation, and achieved higher volumetric yields (1.56 ± 0.31 mg/mL) compared to E. coli (1.31 ± 0.16 mg/mL), reflecting advantages of yeast expression for large-scale production. Collectively, these findings provide a robust structural and functional foundation for LysPALS22, highlighting its conserved enzymatic features, specific ligand interactions, and successful recombinant expression, thereby setting the stage for future in vivo antimicrobial efficacy studies and rational engineering efforts aimed at combating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections. Prediction of Maximum Scour Around Circular Bridge Piers Using Semi-Empirical and Machine Learning Models

Local scour around bridge piers is one of the primary causes of structural failure in bridges. Therefore, this study focuses on addressing the estimation of maximum scour depth (dsm), which is essential for safe and resilient bridge design. Many studies in the last eight decades have included metadata collection and developed around 80 empirical formulas using various scour-affecting parameters of different ranges. To date, a total of 33 formulas have been comparatively analyzed and ranked based on their predictive accuracy. In this study, novel formulas using semi-empirical methods and gene expression programming (GEP) have been developed alongside an artificial neural network (ANN) model to accurately estimate dsm using 768 observed data points collected from published work, along with eight newly conducted experimental data points in the laboratory. These new formulas/models are systematically compared with 74 empirical literature formulas for their predictive capability. The influential parameters for predicting dsm are flow intensity, flow shallowness, sediment gradation, sediment coarseness, time, constriction ratio, and Froude number. Performances of the formulas are compared using different statistical metrics such as the coefficient of determination, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency, mean bias error, and root-mean-squared error. The Gauss–Newton method is employed to solve the nonlinear least-squares problem to develop the semi-empirical formula that outperforms the literature formulas, except the formula from GEP, in terms of statistical performance metrics. However, the feed-forward ANN model outperformed the semi-empirical model during testing and validation phases, respectively, with higher CD (0.790 vs. 0.756), NSE (0.783 vs. 0.750), lower RMSE (0.289 vs. 0.301), and greater prediction accuracy (64.655% vs. 61.935%), providing approximately 15–18% greater accuracy with minimal errors and narrower uncertainty bands. Using user-friendly tools and a strong semi-empirical model, which requires no coding skills, can assist designers and engineers in making accurate predictions in practical bridge design and safety planning. To address the shortcomings of the RIME algorithm’s weak global exploration ability, insufficient information exchange among populations, and limited population diversity, this work proposes a distributed data-guided RIME algorithm called DRIME. First, this paper proposes a data-distribution-driven guided learning strategy that enhances information exchange among populations and dynamically guides populations to exploit or explore. Then, a soft-rime search phase based on weighted averaging is proposed, which balances the development and exploration of RIME by alternating with the original strategy. Finally, a candidate pool is utilized to replace the optimal reference point of the hard-rime puncture mechanism to enrich the diversity of the population and reduce the risk of falling into local optima. To evaluate the performance of the DRIME algorithm, parameter sensitivity analysis, policy effectiveness analysis, and two comparative analyses are performed on the CEC-2017 test set and the CEC-2022 test set. The parameter sensitivity analysis identifies the optimal parameter settings for the DRIME algorithm. The strategy effectiveness analysis confirms the effectiveness of the improved strategies. In comparison with ACGRIME, TERIME, IRIME, DNMRIME, GLSRIME, and HERIME on the CEC-2017 test set, the DRIME algorithm achieves Friedman rankings of 1.517, 1.069, 1.138, and 1.069 in different dimensions. In comparison with EOSMA, GLS-MPA, ISGTOA, EMTLBO, LSHADE-SPACMA, and APSM-jSO on the CEC-2022 test set, the DRIME algorithm achieves Friedman rankings of 2.167 and 1.917 in 10 and 30 dimensions, respectively. In addition, the DRIME algorithm achieved an average ranking of 1.23 in engineering constraint optimization problems, far surpassing other comparison algorithms. In conclusion, the numerical optimization experiments successfully illustrate that the DRIME algorithm has excellent search capability and can provide satisfactory solutions to a wide range of optimization problems. Element doping and functional group modification engineering serve as efficient approaches that contribute to the improvement of the functional efficiency in graphitic carbon nitride (CN) materials. A CN photocatalyst co-modified with sulfur (S) and cyano moieties was prepared through thermal condensation polymerization. The introduced S species modulated the band structure, increased charge carrier mobility, and significantly promoted charge separation and transport. Additionally, the introduction of cyano groups extended light absorption range and improved the material’s selective adsorption of reactant molecules. The as-prepared sulfur-modified CN photocatalyst obtained after a 6 h thermal treatment, which was capable of degrading organic pollutants and producing hydrogen (H2) efficiently and stably, exhibited excellent catalytic performance. The photocatalyst’s photocatalyst exhibited a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, with a Rhodamine B (RhB) removal efficiency reaching 97.3%. Meanwhile, the H2 production level reached 1221.47 μmol h−1g−1. Based on four-cycle experiments, the photocatalyst exhibited excellent recyclability and stability in both H2 production processes and photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation. In addition, mechanistic studies confirmed the dominant role of ·OH and ·O2 as active species responsible for the reaction system’s performance. This study highlights that the co-decoration of heteroatoms and functional groups can markedly enhance the photocatalytic performance of CN-based materials, offering considerable potential for future applications in energy conversion and environmental remediation. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) clusters are increasingly deployed in power system applications, such as transmission line inspection, fault diagnosis, and post-disaster emergency communication restoration. Nonetheless, limitations of range and battery capacity have rendered the assurance of uninterrupted task operation a critical concern. Efficient cooperation and energy replenishment solutions are crucial for effective UAV cluster scheduling to resolve this issue. This study proposes an innovative scheduling method that integrates UAV path planning with laser-based remote charging technology. Initially, a scheduling model incorporating both energy consumption and task completion time is established. Subsequently, an integrated laser-powered UAV model is proposed, unifying charging operations with mission execution processes. Furthermore, a distributed robust optimization (DRO) framework is proposed to handle spatiotemporal uncertainties, particularly those caused by weather conditions. Finally, the proposed scheduling method is applied to a disaster recovery scenario of a power system. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy significantly outperforms traditional scheduling methods without remote charging by achieving higher task completion rates and improved energy efficiency. These findings substantiate the effectiveness and engineering feasibility of the proposed method in enhancing UAV cluster operational capabilities under stringent energy constraints. Full article

As the complexity and functional integration of mechanism systems continue to increase in modern practical engineering, the challenges of changing environmental conditions and extreme working conditions are becoming increasingly severe. Traditional uncertainty-based design optimization (UBDO) has exposed problems of low efficiency and slow convergence when dealing with nonlinear, high-dimensional, and strongly coupled problems. In response to these issues, this paper proposes an UBDO framework that integrates an efficient intelligent optimization algorithm with an excellent surrogate model. By fusing butterfly search with Levy flight optimization, an improved chicken swarm algorithm is introduced, aiming to address the imbalance between global exploitation and local exploration capabilities in the original algorithm. Additionally, Bayesian optimization is employed to fit the limit-state evaluation function using a BP neural network, with the objective of reducing the high computational costs associated with uncertainty analysis through repeated limit-state evaluations in uncertainty-based optimization. Finally, a decoupled optimization framework is adopted to integrate uncertainty analysis with design optimization, enhancing global optimization capabilities under uncertainty and addressing challenges associated with results that lack sufficient accuracy or reliability to meet design requirements. Based on the results from engineering case studies, the proposed UBDO framework demonstrates notable effectiveness and superiority. Full article

Multi-Strategy Honey Badger Algorithm for Global Optimization

The Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) is a recently proposed metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the foraging behavior of honey badgers. The search mechanism of this algorithm is divided into two phases: a mining phase and a honey-seeking phase, effectively emulating the processes of exploration and exploitation within the search space. Despite its innovative approach, the Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) faces challenges such as slow convergence rates, an imbalanced trade-off between exploration and exploitation, and a tendency to become trapped in local optima. To address these issues, we propose an enhanced version of the Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA), namely the Multi-Strategy Honey Badger Algorithm (MSHBA), which incorporates a Cubic Chaotic Mapping mechanism for population initialization. This integration aims to enhance the uniformity and diversity of the initial population distribution. In the mining and honey-seeking stages, the position of the honey badger is updated based on the best fitness value within the population. This strategy may lead to premature convergence due to population aggregation around the fittest individual. To counteract this tendency and enhance the algorithm’s global optimization capability, we introduce a random search strategy. Furthermore, an elite tangential search and a differential mutation strategy are employed after three iterations without detecting a new best value in the population, thereby enhancing the algorithm’s efficacy. A comprehensive performance evaluation, conducted across a suite of established benchmark functions, reveals that the MSHBA excels in 26 out of 29 IEEE CEC 2017 benchmarks. Subsequent statistical analysis corroborates the superior performance of the MSHBA. Moreover, the MSHBA has been successfully applied to four engineering design problems, highlighting its capability for addressing constrained engineering design challenges and outperforming other optimization algorithms in this domain. Recent progress in microfluidic technologies has led to the development of compact and highly efficient electrochemical platforms, including lab-on-a-chip (LoC) systems, that integrate multiple testing functions into a single, portable device. Combined with smartphone-based electrochemical devices, these systems enable rapid and accurate on-site detection of food contaminants, including pesticides, heavy metals, pathogens, and chemical additives at farms, markets, and processing facilities, significantly reducing the need for traditional laboratories. Smartphones improve the performance of these platforms by providing computational power, wireless connectivity, and high-resolution imaging, making them ideal for in-field food safety testing with minimal sample and reagent requirements. At the core of these systems are electrochemical biosensors, which convert specific biochemical reactions into electrical signals, ensuring highly sensitive and selective detection. Advanced nanomaterials and integration with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have further improved performance, delivering cost-effective, user-friendly food monitoring solutions that meet regulatory safety and quality standards. Analytical techniques such as voltammetry, amperometry, and impedance spectroscopy increase accuracy even in complex food samples. Moreover, low-cost engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), and nanotechnology enhance the sensitivity, affordability, and data analysis capabilities of smartphone-integrated electrochemical devices, facilitating their deployment for on-site monitoring of food and agricultural contaminants. This review explains how these technologies address global food safety challenges through rapid, reliable, and portable detection, supporting food quality, sustainability, and public health. This paper presents a novel ontology-driven digital twin framework specifically designed for aviation maintenance and operations that addresses these challenges through semantic reasoning and explainable decision support. The proposed framework integrates seven interconnected ontologies—structural, functional, behavioral, monitoring, maintenance, lifecycle, and environmental. It collectively provides a comprehensive semantic representation of aircraft systems and their operational context. Each ontology is mathematically formalized using description logics and graph theory, creating a unified knowledge graph that enables transparent, traceable reasoning from sensor observations to maintenance decisions. The digital twin is formally defined as a 6-tuple that incorporates semantic transformation engines, cross-ontology mappings, and dynamic reasoning mechanisms. Unlike traditional data-driven approaches that operate as black boxes, the ontology-driven framework provides explainable inference capabilities essential for regulatory compliance and safety certification in aviation. The semantic foundation enables causal reasoning, rule-based validation, and context-aware maintenance recommendations while supporting standardization and interoperability across manufacturers, airlines, and regulatory bodies. The research contributes a mathematically grounded, semantically transparent framework that bridges the gap between domain knowledge and operational data in aviation maintenance. This work establishes the foundation for next-generation cognitive maintenance systems that can support intelligent, adaptive, and trustworthy operations in modern aviation ecosystems. Full article

Language modeling has evolved from simple rule-based systems into complex assistants capable of tackling a multitude of tasks. State-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) are capable of scoring highly on proficiency benchmarks, and as a result have been deployed across industries to increase productivity and convenience. However, the prolific nature of such tools has provided threat actors with the ability to leverage them for attack development. Our paper describes the current state of LLMs, their availability, and their role in benevolent and malicious applications. In addition, we propose how an LLM can be combined with text-to-speech (TTS) voice cloning to create a framework capable of carrying out social engineering attacks. Our case study analyzes the realism of two different open-source TTS models, Tortoise TTS and Coqui XTTS-v2, by calculating similarity scores between generated and real audio samples from four participants. Our results demonstrate that Tortoise is able to generate realistic voice clone audios for native English speaking males, which indicates that easily accessible resources can be leveraged to create deceptive social engineering attacks. As such tools become more advanced, defenses such as awareness, detection, and red teaming may not be able to keep up with dangerously equipped adversaries. Full article
