This paper takes the five northwestern provinces of China as research objects to explore the intrinsic mechanisms of the digital economy, industrial structure upgrading, and regional green development through empirical analysis. This study reveals that the digital economy plays an indispensable role in the green and high-quality development of the five northwestern provinces. (1) This study investigates the influence of the digital economy on green high-quality development in China’s five northwestern provinces, focusing on the mediating effect of industrial structure upgrading. Using panel data and multiple regression analysis, it demonstrates that the digital economy significantly promotes green development, even when controlling for infrastructure, human capital, and openness. (2) Industrial structure upgrading serves as a critical mediator, transmitting part of this positive effect. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the digital economy’s impact is more pronounced in high-GDP regions, while low-GDP regions remain dependent on conventional drivers like infrastructure. Additionally, human capital and tax burdens exhibit positive effects on green development, whereas R&D intensity has a negligible short-term influence. (3) These findings highlight the importance of region-specific policies integrating digital infrastructure, industrial upgrading, and human capital investment to foster sustainable regional development. This study provides a theoretical basis for deepening digital economic development and promoting green industrial upgrading in northwest China. It suggests that policymakers should account for regional economic disparities and coordinate the deployment of digital infrastructure, industrial transformation, and human capital investment to achieve long-term, coordinated green and high-quality development in the region. Rural tourism plays a crucial role in promoting industrial revitalization in mountainous regions. Drawing inspiration from the site selection mechanisms of nature reserves, this study constructs a gap analysis framework tailored to rural tourism destinations, aiming to provide technical support for their spatial layout and systematic planning. By integrating a potential evaluation system based on tourism resources, market demand, and synergistic factors, the study identifies rural tourism priority zones and proposes a development typology and spatial optimization strategy across five provinces in Southwest China. The findings reveal: (1) First- and second-priority zones are primarily located in the core and periphery of provincial capitals and prefecture-level cities, while third-priority zones are concentrated in resource-rich areas of Yunnan and Guizhou and market-oriented areas of Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guangxi. (2) The Chengdu Plain emerges as the core region for rural tourism development, with hotspots clustered around Chengdu, northern and western Guizhou, central Chongqing, eastern Guangxi, and northwestern Yunnan, whereas cold spots are mainly situated in the western Sichuan Plateau and the Leshan–Liangshan–Zhaotong–Panzhihua–Chuxiong–Pu’er belt. (3) The alignment between tourism resources and rural tourism destinations is highest in Yunnan and Guizhou, while Chongqing exhibits the strongest match between destinations and tourism market potential and synergistic development conditions. Overall, 79.35% of rural tourism destinations in the region are situated within identified priority zones, with Chongqing, Guizhou, and Sichuan exhibiting the highest proportions. Based on the spatial mismatch between potential and existing destinations, the study delineates four development types—maintenance and enhancement, supplementation and upgrading, expansion, and reserve development—and offers regionally tailored planning recommendations. The proposed framework provides a replicable approach for spatial planning of rural tourism destinations in complex mountainous settings. Full article

Promoting the coordinated development of tourism and enhancing residents’ prosperity has become a critical issue in the contemporary era. This study examines five northwestern provinces in China, constructing an index system to measure the dynamic interplay between common prosperity and tourism development. A Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model was employed to analyze the key driving factors influencing the coupling coordination between common prosperity and tourism development levels. The results revealed the following: (1) From 2012 to 2022, the level of common prosperity in the five northwestern provinces exhibited an upward trend, while tourism development levels initially increased and then declined. Shaanxi Province had the highest levels of both common prosperity and tourism development, whereas Qinghai Province had the lowest. (2) Although coupled coordination between common prosperity and tourism development has improved, it remains relatively low. Shaanxi Province exhibits superior coupling coordination compared to the other provinces. (3) The analysis of influencing factors indicates that the proportion of tourism income has the most significant impact on the coupling coordination between common prosperity and tourism development. Moreover, the degree and direction of the influence of various factors on coupling coordination differ across regions. Based on these findings, measures are proposed to enhance the coordinated development of tourism and common prosperity in the northwestern provinces. Full article

Energy resources are a material basis for regional sustainable development and ecological security. However, this issue has not been adequately studied in Northwest China. Here, we consider the five northwestern provinces of China and break down the change in energy use intensity. Results show that the total energy intensity in the five northwestern provinces decreased from 2.389 tons/104 Chinese yuan (CNY) in 2000 to 0.92 tons/104 CNY in 2021. The main influencing factors for the decline in energy intensity are the industrial energy intensity followed by the industrial structure and the energy structure. There are eight industrial sub-sectors that contributed to the decrease in industrial energy intensity. Conversely, there are seven sub-sectors that increased industrial energy intensity. In addition, there are six sub-sectors with an energy intensity of more than 1 ton/104 CNY. The convergence parameters demonstrate that the energy intensities of the five northwestern provinces did not converge to the same steady-state level, and their gap did not narrow in the short term. While the region’s overall energy intensity has shown a consistent downward trajectory, sectors heavily reliant on traditional fossil fuels—such as coal chemical processing, petroleum refining, and coking—have experienced a paradoxical upward trend in energy consumption. To address this, governments must implement targeted sector-specific measures, including upgrading technical capabilities through advanced coal gasification technologies, optimizing heat integration systems in petroleum refining processes, and streamlining intermediate production stages to minimize energy waste. While investigating macrofungi diversity in Gansu province, northwestern China, five fresh and fleshy specimens were collected, which are characterized by nearly white to buff hemispherical pileus with waved margins, a disc depressed with coral to brownish red fibrillose scales, adnate to sub-decurrent lamellae with four relatively regular rows of lamellulae, a stipe that is central, hollow, frequently straight to curved; basidiospores that are globose to subglobose, 5.0–6.0 × (3.5−) 4.0–5.0 (−5.5) μm, narrowly clavate cheilocystidia predominantly, pleurocystidia and caulocystidia not observed; and a cutis pileipellis, with hyphae slightly inflated in the KOH. The results of phylogeny analysis indicated that the species forms an independent lineage in Phyllotopsidaceae based on the ITS (ITS5/ITS4) and nLSU (LR0R/LR7) dataset. Molecular clock analyses suggested the common ancestor of Neotricholomopsis emerged later than upper Cretaceous with a mean crown age of 229.36 Mya (95% highest posterior density of 129.63–343.08 Mya). These five specimens were described as an unreported taxon based on the phylogeny analysis combined with morphological examination and ecological and geographical distribution. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic trees to demonstrate the placement of this species and discussions with its related species are provided. Full article

Ephedra sinica (E. sinica) holds significant economic and medicinal importance and is predominantly found in arid areas. Due to the limitations of environmental variables, growth habits, and human activities, the production and suitability areas of E. sinica have significantly decreased, especially in the five northwestern provinces of China. In this study, 212 distribution points of E. sinica and 40 environmental variables were obtained to project the habitat suitability of E. sinica under different emission scenarios in the future. It identified precipitation in the wettest month, monthly mean of the diurnal temperature difference, and solar radiation intensity in April and July as the primary environmental factors affecting the suitability of E. sinica in the region. The areas of high, medium, and low suitability in the region cover 103,000 km2, 376,500 km2, and 486,800 km2. Under future scenarios, the suitability areas from 2021 to 2100 will decrease by 20%, with high suitability areas decreasing by 65% to 85% particularly. With comprehensive environmental variables, the suitability areas of E. sinica from 2021 to 2100 are projected, filling the gap in the projection of E. sinica suitability areas in the five northwestern provinces of China over long time period. The suitability areas show a significant decreasing trend. This research provides valuable insights into the suitability areas and crucial environmental factors, offering theoretical support for future protection and management efforts for E. sinica. Landslides are among the most prevalent geological hazards and are characterized by their high frequency, significant destructive potential, and considerable incident rate. Annually, these events lead to substantial casualties and property losses. Thus, conducting landslide susceptibility assessments in the regions vulnerable to such hazards has become crucial. In recent years, the coupling of traditional statistical methods with machine learning techniques has shown significant advantages in assessing landslide risk. This study focused on Sichuan Province, China, a region characterized by its vast area and diverse climatic and geological conditions. We selected 13 influencing factors for the analysis: elevation, slope, aspect, plan curve, profile curve, valley depth, precipitation, the stream power index (SPI), the topographic wetness index (TWI), the topographic position index (TPI), surface roughness, fractional vegetation cover (FVC), and slope height. This study incorporated the certainty factor method (CF), the information value method (IV), and their coupling with the decision tree C5.0 model (DT) and a logistic regression model (LR) as follows: IV-LR, IV-DT, CF-LR, and CF-DT. The results, validated by an ROC curve analysis, demonstrate that the evaluation accuracy of all six models exceeded 0.750 (AUC > 0.750). The IV-LR model exhibited the highest accuracy, with an AUC of 0.848. When comparing the accuracy among the models, it is evident that the coupling models outperformed the individual statistical models. Based on the results of the six models, a landslide susceptibility map was generated, categorized into five levels. High and very high landslide risk zones are mainly concentrated in the eastern and southeastern regions, covering nearly half of Sichuan Province. Medium-risk areas form linear distributions from northeast to southwest, occupying a smaller proportion of the area. Extremely low- and low-risk zones are predominantly located in the western and northwestern regions. The density of the landslide points increases with higher risk levels across the regions. This further validates the suitability of this research methodology for landslide susceptibility studies on a large scale. Consequently, this methodology can provide crucial insights for landslide prevention and mitigation efforts in this region. Full article

In recent years, China’s economy has experienced rapid development, and its cities have undergone rapid expansion; however, the development of cities in the northwest region has been relatively slow due to various geographical and economic constraints. Studying the urban expansion in these regions is of significant importance for regional planning and development. This study selected the provincial capitals of five underdeveloped provinces in northwestern China as the research sample and used Landsat TM/OLI remote-sensing imagery as the primary data, supplemented by Digital Elevation Model (DEM), meteorological, and socio-economic data, the study extracted urban impervious surfaces using the ENDISI and MNDWI indices. It analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of urban impervious surfaces from 1990 to 2020 using indicators such as urban expansion intensity, compactness and fractal dimension, centroid migration, and standard deviation ellipse. Furthermore, the study quantified the influencing factors using Geodetectors. The findings reveal the following: (1) From 1990 to 2020, impervious surfaces in the five cities continued to expand, with Xi’an experiencing the largest expansion area at 549.94 km2 and Xining the smallest at only 132.83 km2, with an expansion intensity of merely 2.99%. However, significant disparities existed in expansion intensity and area across different periods. (2) Overall, the compactness of the cities decreased by 47.6% while the overall fractal dimension increased by 2.85%, indicating a trend towards more dispersed and complex urban forms. (3) Expansion directions varied among the cities, with Xi’an and Urumqi expanding towards the northwest, Lanzhou towards the north, Yinchuan primarily towards the east, and Xining mainly towards the west. (4) Economic, demographic, and investment factors were identified as the primary influencers of urban expansion, exhibiting changes over different periods. Analyzing the similarities and differences in city development can offer valuable insights into urban construction and sustainable development in underdeveloped areas. Full article

The intricate interplay between water resources, land resources, energy systems, and carbon emissions has emerged as a prominent discourse in academic research. Nonetheless, there remains a dearth of comprehensive research dedicated to fostering environmentally friendly and low-carbon development through systematic integration and coordination efforts. This study aimed to fill this gap by integrating the coupling mechanism of the Water-Land-Energy-Carbon (WLEC) system, thereby constructing an evaluation index framework that assesses coordinated developments in Northwest China’s WLEC system. It scrutinizes the security levels within the Water-Land-Energy (WLE) subsystem while conducting quantitative analyses on the degrees of coupling coordination within the WLEC systems, alongside their associated hindering factors. The preliminary findings were as follows: Firstly, the safety development within the WLE system demonstrates a positive trend across Northwest China, with notable advancements primarily observed in the Qinghai and Gansu provinces. In 2021, all five Northwestern provinces exhibited moderate levels of safe development, except for the Qinghai province, which transitioned from moderate to robust. Secondly, the coupling coordination degree of the WLEC system across the five provinces has consistently illustrated an upward trajectory over the years. However, as of 2021, the system remains in a state characterized by marginal disorder. Notably, the Qinghai and Gansu provinces have shown particularly encouraging upward trends, with the Shaanxi province also making notable progress. Conversely, Xinjiang has declined since 2017 due to negative interactions between the subsystems of water, soil, energy, and carbon emissions. Thirdly, spatial variations exist in the distribution patterns between the provinces regarding the influence of obstructing factors on indicators related to coupled coordinated development, such as per capita arable land area, per capita energy consumption, per capita carbon emissions, per capita construction land area, and the proportion of groundwater water in the total amount of water supply, which demonstrated an increasing trend. These findings carry significant practical implications for actively and steadily promoting carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in Northwest China. Full article

The sustainable development of a country requires stable funds to reshape and restore its economy, something which cannot be separated from the support of financial services. Digital financial inclusion, with its inclusive and extensive features, has provided a new impetus for economic development and governance. Based on the panel data of 193 counties in 5 provinces of northwest China from 2014 to 2021, this paper uses a bi-directional fixed effect model, an intermediary effect model and a threshold effect model in order to test digital inclusive finance and county-level economic resilience, and to explore the internal correlation details. The results show that digital inclusive finance will significantly enhance the economic resilience of the five northwestern provinces by improving capital allocation efficiency, enhancing entrepreneurship and employment vitality, and reducing pollution emissions. In addition, there is a double threshold effect between capital allocation efficiency and employment vitality, in which the threshold effect of capital allocation efficiency presents a progressively increasing state, and in which the threshold effect of entrepreneurship and employment vitality presents a state of fluctuating increase. Therefore, China needs to further improve the digital inclusive financial environment in its northwest; continue and deepen the significant functions of digital inclusive finance in resource allocation efficiency, entrepreneurship and employment vitality, and environmental protection; and provide guidance for solving regional imbalances and promoting national sustainable development. Fully understanding the past characteristics of climate and patterns of climate change can contribute to future climate prediction. Tree-ring stable oxygen isotope ratio (δ18O) is crucial for high-resolution research of past climate changes and their driving mechanisms. A tree-ring δ18O chronology from 1896 to 2019 was established using Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. from the Yimeng Mountains (YMMs) in the central part of eastern China. We found that precipitation from the 41st pentad (five days) of the previous year to the 40th pentad of the current year (P41–40) was the main factor influencing the YMMs tree-ring δ18O change. We then created a transfer function between P41–40 and tree-ring δ18O. The reconstructed P41–40 explained 39% of the variance in the observed precipitation during the common period of 1960–2016. Over the past 124 years, the YMMs experienced 19 dry years and 20 wet years. The spatial correlation results indicate that the reconstructed precipitation could, to some extent, represent the precipitation changes in Shandong Province, and even the central part of eastern China, from the early 20th century to the present. In addition, it was found that the trends in YMMs tree-ring δ18O were similar at both high frequency and low frequency to those in tree-ring δ18O series from Mt. Tianmu in eastern China and from Jirisan National Park in southern South Korea. However, the YMMs tree-ring δ18O was only correlated at low frequency with the tree-ring δ18O of the Ordos Plateau in northwestern China and that of Nagano and Shiga in central Japan, which are far from the YMMs. The changes in precipitation and tree-ring δ18O in the YMMs were, to some extent, influenced by the Pacific decadal oscillation. The five northwestern provinces face numerous challenges in sustainable development, particularly water scarcity, economic imbalances, and ecological degradation. This study aims to deeply assess the region’s water resource conditions, the current status of economic development, and the health of the ecosystem while exploring the relationships and coupling mechanisms among them. Using the obstacle model, the research analyzes the primary barriers affecting these three significant factors in the region. The study further reveals a continually improving trend of coordinated development within the water–economic–ecological system in the five northwestern provinces of China, indicating that water usage per ten thousand GDP is the primary obstacle. This research enriches our understanding of the development in China’s five northwestern provinces and provides a theoretical foundation for achieving sustainable development. Full article

Karst areas are characterized by poor surface water storage capacity, which makes them more sensitive to drought events. To enhance drought resistance in karst landform areas, this study focuses on a typical region in the Yun–Gui Plateau of China, specifically Guizhou Province, which includes 88 counties and districts. According to the regional characteristics, the index system for the assessment of drought resistance and disaster reduction ability was constructed to include 17 indexes in five evaluation layers, including natural conditions, water conservancy project, economic strength, water usage and water conservation level, and emergency support capacity. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted using a fuzzy evaluation model. Furthermore, the drought resistance and disaster reduction capacity of Guizhou Province was evaluated according to the fulfillment of water supply and water demand under the frequency of 75%, 90%, 95%, 97%, and 99% drought frequency inflow in each research unit. This assessment serves to define the spatial distribution pattern of drought resistance and disaster reduction capability within the province. Additionally, according to the results of the supply–demand balance method, the weight of the main influencing factors in regards to drought resistance and disaster reduction ability was optimized and adjusted to identify the key restricting factors of drought resistance and disaster reduction ability. This research data was obtained from the National Disaster Survey database, aiming to provide practical guidance for drought resistance in Guizhou Province. The research findings show that: (1) the distribution characteristics of drought resistance and disaster reduction capability in Guizhou Province are the most significant in Guiyang City, Liupanshui City, and Anshun City in the southwest, with higher drought resistance and disaster reduction ability found in central region, and lower drought resistance primarily identified in the eastern part of Qiandongnan Prefecture, Tongren City, the southern part of Qiannan Prefecture, and the northwestern part of Bijie City; (2) there are six main influencing factors in the three criterion layers, i.e., hydraulic engineering, emergency drought resistance, and social economy, and their contribution rates are as follows: surface water supply and storage rate > average number of soil moisture monitoring stations > per capita GDP > agricultural emergency drought irrigation rate > regional water supply assurance rate > cultivated land effective irrigation rate. The report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China first proposed the strategy of rural revitalization. This proposal constitutes a major strategic deployment for work related to “agriculture, the countryside and farmers” based on China’s national and agricultural conditions and scientific analysis of the new problems faced by agricultural and rural reform in the new era. China’s agricultural development is facing multiple challenges, such as market competition, resource scarcity, environmental constraints, labor exodus, and technological innovation. Additionally, China’s agricultural production is inefficient, farmers’ income is low, and the hollowing out of the countryside has further intensified. To address these challenges, the Party Central Committee made the major decision to implement the rural revitalization strategy, and governments at all levels have introduced a series of policies to support agriculture. However, with the rapid advancement of industrialization and urbanization, the proportion of agricultural output to the total output of the national economy and the proportion of the agricultural labor force to the social labor force are not decreasing, and the idea of seizing the opportunities offered by agriculture is no longer able to solve the current dilemma faced by agricultural and rural development. Expanding the function of agriculture and actively docking with the industry and the service industry are a major strategic initiative for actively adapting to the new normal of economic development. They also represent major innovative thinking to accelerate the transformation of the agricultural development mode. Only when industries are prosperous can rural revitalization have a strong material foundation. To achieve industrial prosperity, industrial integration is the key. Therefore, the realization of rural industrial revitalization must take the path of industrial integration and development. At present, research on rural industrial integration is limited to the local regions, such as provinces and cities, and analysis at the level of national rural industrial integration is lacking. Accelerating the integrated development of rural industries is key to promoting rural revitalization. This paper scientifically establishes an evaluation index system for the level of rural industrial integration development based on five related aspects: society, the economy, resources, facilities, and the environment. Factor analysis is used to reduce the dimensionality of the evaluation index system, and cluster analysis is used to classify the rural industrial integration development level of each province in China into different tiers. The results show that there are obvious regional differences in the levels of rural industrial integration development in China. The provinces and cities with development levels that are higher than average (i.e., scores ranging from 0.291 to 0.915) are concentrated in the eastern coastal areas and inland riverine areas. In contrast, those with development levels that are lower than average (i.e., scores ranging from −0.504 to −0.750) are concentrated in Northern China, the northeastern noncoastal areas and northwestern areas. In addition, provinces can be divided into five development tiers of rural industrial integration. Based on this information, national, provincial, and municipal improvement strategies are proposed to address the differences in development among and the prospects for each province, and to effectively promote the integration of rural industries in China. Eighteen strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from spontaneously fermented sour porridge with broomcorn millet in Northwestern Shanxi Province of China, and their probiotic characteristics were investigated in vitro. Survival rates under gastrointestinal conditions, cholesterol reduction, antibacterial capabilities, antioxidant activities, and safety assessments were examined. Results showed that five strains were selected as probiotics and identified as Levilactobacillusbrevis. Strain L10 exhibited excellent probiotic characteristics, with an 86% survival rate under pH 2.0 for 2 h, 80% survival rate in 0.3% bile salt for 6 h, the highest survival rate (78%) in simulated gastrointestinal juice for 3 h, the highest hydrophobicity (42% to xylene and 39% to hexadecane), the highest aggregation (39% auto-aggregation and 10.4–18.13% co-aggregation), relative higher cholesterol reduction rate (80%), the highest antibacterial activities, the highest antioxidant activity, sensitive to most antibiotics tested, without hemolytic and hydrolyze gelatinase activity and could not produce biogenic amine.
