Plant-based diets are increasingly recognized for their potential health benefits, reduced environmental impact, and alignment with ethical concerns related to animal welfare. Plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs), formulated using alternative vegetable protein sources, can contribute to the nutritional adequacy of such diets while supporting consumer adherence by replicating the sensory characteristics of conventional meat products. This study aimed to establish evidence-based nutritional recommendations for the formulation of nutritionally balanced PBMAs through expert consensus, using a modified Delphi method. Consensus was achieved for 12 nutritional recommendations across three stakeholder groups: (i) academic researchers; (ii) representatives from scientific societies, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and government agencies; and (iii) industry stakeholders involved in PBMA production. Recommendations focused on limiting nutrients of concern—such as sodium and saturated fats—were unanimously endorsed by all groups. Additionally, consensus was reached on recommendations emphasizing the inclusion of ingredients that ensure an adequate intake of essential nutrients, including proteins, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Among the six proposed regulatory recommendations, three achieved consensus. The resulting set of nutritional recommendations offers a valuable framework to support the food industry in developing PBMAs that align with consumer expectations for health, nutrition, and sustainability. Moreover, these recommendations can play a pivotal role in assisting regulatory authorities in defining identity and quality standards for PBMAs. Full article

This paper explores the complexities of measuring impact from placemaking in the context of public and community housing (sometimes known as social or subsidised housing) in Aotearoa New Zealand. Placemaking refers to a range of practices and interventions—including the provision or facilitation of access to community infrastructure—that seek to cultivate a positive sense of place through everyday experiences, spaces, relationships, and rituals. Drawing on interviews with four community housing providers (CHPs), analysis of their documentation, and tenant survey and interview data from two of those CHPs, this research examines providers’ change theories about placemaking in relation to tenants’ experiences of safety, belonging and connectedness, including access to local amenities, ease of getting around, and a sense of neighbourhood and community affiliation. Based on the importance of these variables to wellbeing outcomes, the study highlights the potential of placemaking to support tenant wellbeing, while also recognising that providers must navigate trade-offs and co-benefits, limited resources, and varying levels of tenant engagement. While placemaking can help to foster feelings of connection, belonging and safety, its impact depends on providers’ capacity to initiate and sustain such efforts amidst competing demands and constraints. The study offers indicative findings and recommendations for future research. Although the impacts of placemaking and community infrastructure provision are difficult to quantify, research findings are synthesised into a prototype framework to support housing providers in their decision-making and housing development processes. The framework, which should be adapted and evaluated in situ, potentially also informs other actors in the built environment—including architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners, developers and government agencies. In Aotearoa New Zealand, where housing provision occurs within a colonial context, government agencies have obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi to actively protect Māori rights and to work in partnership with Māori in housing policy and delivery. This underscores the importance of placemaking practices and interventions that are culturally and contextually responsive. Full article

This study develops a three-dimensional evaluation framework integrating policy instruments, policy themes, and policy subjects to analyze China’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policies. Based on 82 central government policy documents issued between 2007 and 2024, it employs content analysis, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling, and social network analysis. The findings reveal a structural imbalance in policy instruments, with overreliance on environmental instruments and insufficient application of supply side and demand side mechanisms. Four major policy themes are identified: environmental governance, corporate responsibility and disclosure, technological innovation, and financial development. These themes show evolving priorities aligned with national strategies. Social network analysis shows weak coordination among stakeholders, with only a few central agencies driving most policies. This research contributes a systematic and quantitative approach to ESG policy evaluation, offering insights into structural shortcomings and governance fragmentation. It provides actionable recommendations for optimizing instrument use, enhancing thematic design, and improving multi-agency collaboration in ESG policymaking. This study contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by evaluating China’s ESG policies and proposing a more balanced and pragmatic policy framework. This theoretical article explores the contrasting ontologies, axiologies, and political economies of transhumanism and posthumanism. Transhumanism envisions the human as an enhanced, autonomous agent shaped by neoliberal and Enlightenment ideals. Posthumanism challenges this by emphasizing relationality, ecological entanglement, and critiques of commodification. Both engage with technology’s role in reshaping humanity. Drawing on Braidotti’s posthumanism, Haraway’s cyborg figuration, Ahmed’s politics of emotion, Berlant’s cruel optimism, Massumi’s affective modulation, Seigworth and Gregg’s affective intensities, Zuboff’s surveillance capitalism, Fisher’s capitalist realism, Cooper’s surplus life, Sadowski’s digital capitalism, Lupton’s quantified self, Schafheitle et al.’s datafied subject, Pasquale’s black box society, Terranova’s network culture, Bratton’s platform sovereignty, Dean’s communicative capitalism, and Morozov’s technological solutionism, the article elucidates how subjectivity, data, and infrastructure are reorganized by corporate systems. Introducing technogensis as the co-creation of human and technological subjectivities, it links corporate-platform practices to future trajectories governed by Apple, Meta, and Google. These branded technologies function not only as enhancements but as infrastructures of governance that commodify subjectivity, regulate affect and behavior, and reproduce socio-economic stratification. A future is extrapolated where humans are not liberated by technology but incubated, intubated, and ventilated by techno-conglomerate governments. These attention-monopolizing, affective-capturing, behavior-modulating, and profit-extracting platforms do more than enhance; they brand subjectivity, rendering existence subscription-based under the guise of personal optimization and freedom. This reframes transhumanism as a cybernetic intensification of liberal subjectivity, offering tools to interrogate governance, equity, agency, and democratic participation, and resist techno-utopian narratives. Building on this, a posthumanist alternative emphasizes relational, multispecies subjectivities, collective agency, and ecological accountability, outlining pathways for ethical design and participatory governance to resist neoliberal commodification and foster emergent, open-ended techno-social futures. Territorial transformations in Indigenous regions are shaped by intersecting ecological, political, and cultural dynamics. In San Juan Bautista Valle Nacional, Oaxaca, the construction of the Cerro de Oro dam disrupted river flows, displaced livelihoods, and triggered the decline of irrigated agriculture. This study examines the long-term impacts of these changes on land use, demographics, and cultural practices, emphasizing women’s contributions to community resilience. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study integrates geospatial analysis (1992–2021), census data (2000–2020), documentary review, and ethnographic fieldwork, including participatory mapping. Results show a shift toward seasonal rainfed agriculture, fluctuating forest cover, and a rise in female-headed households. Women have emerged as central actors in adapting to change through practices such as seed saving, agroforestry, and backstrap-loom weaving. These spatially grounded practices, enacted across varied socio-ecological zones, sustain food systems, preserve biodiversity, and reinforce biocultural memory. Although often overlooked in formal governance, women’s territorial agency plays a vital role in shaping land use and community adaptation. This research highlights the need to recognize Indigenous women’s roles in managing change and sustaining territorial heritage. Acknowledging these contributions is essential for building inclusive, culturally grounded, and sustainable development pathways in regions facing structural and environmental pressures. Full article

This study aims to systematically reveal, from the perspective of organizational scale, the differences between large and small architectural design organizations in China in terms of characteristics of production activities, technological capabilities and innovation levels, resource integration capabilities, and client groups, and to quantify the priority order of clients’ attention to architectural design products, thereby providing a reference for industry structure optimization and strategic decision making. This research combines case analysis and comparative study to construct a four-dimensional comparative framework. The results show that large design organizations, leveraging their advantages in technological research and development as well as resource integration, focus on large-scale complex projects, technology-driven projects, cultural landmark projects, and multi-stakeholder collaborative projects, primarily serving government agencies and large enterprises. In contrast, small design organizations excel in flexibility, concentrating on small-scale simple projects, specialized niche projects, localized projects, and short-cycle, low-budget projects, serving individual owners and small businesses. Furthermore, this study adopts the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to establish an evaluation model. Twenty experts from architectural design organizations, construction organizations, and research institutions were invited to score the survey questionnaires, and quantitative weight analysis was performed. This study explores the potential of National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) to strengthen governance and policy processes in Pakistan. Drawing on the UNESCAP principles of good governance and the EGU policy cycle model, this research applies a dual-method approach combining thematic document analysis of 23 national policy frameworks and a stakeholder survey (n = 28). The results reveal that while many policies reference spatial data conceptually, critical components such as standardised datasets, spatial dashboards, and institutional coordination mechanisms remain underdeveloped. Spatial references are largely confined to early policy stages, with limited integration in evaluation and maintenance, thereby limiting adaptive governance. Conversely, survey findings reflect strong recognition of NSDI’s value across governance principles, policy integration, and spatial awareness dimensions. The composite endorsement score highlights institutional demand for geospatial tools, data standards, and capacity-building platforms. The study concludes that embedding NSDI within policy and planning systems can bridge critical governance gaps, enhance implementation fidelity, and support inter-agency coordination for long-term policy effectiveness. This study aims to develop, implement, and evaluate an Early Warning System (EWS) to alert communities and government agencies in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, about extreme weather events (EWEs) and related disease outbreaks. The project focuses on eThekwini and Ugu municipalities, using a participatory, co-creation approach with communities and health providers. A systematic review will be undertaken to understand the impact of climate change on disease outbreaks and design an EWS that integrates data from rural and urban healthcare and environmental contexts. It will assess disease burden at primary healthcare clinics, examine health needs and community experiences during EWEs, and evaluate health system resilience. The project will also evaluate the design, development, and performance of the EWS intervention, including its implementation costs. Ethical approval will be sought, and informed consent obtained from participants. Based on the findings, recommendations will be made to the Department of Health to enhance early warning systems and health system resilience in response to EWEs and disease outbreaks. Full article

ESG has emerged as a key non-financial indicator, drawing significant investor focus. Disparities in ESG ratings may skew investor perceptions, potentially endangering stock values and financial market stability. This paper examines the link between ESG rating divergences and stock price crash risk, drawing on data from six Chinese and global ESG rating agencies. Focusing on Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed firms, it analyzes information from 2015 to 2022 within the theoretical contexts of information asymmetry and external monitoring. This study finds that ESG rating divergence markedly elevates stock price crash risk, a relationship that persists through a series of robustness checks. Specifically, the mechanisms operate through two key pathways: increased reputational damage risk due to information asymmetry and reduced external monitoring due to weakened external governance. The results of the heterogeneity analysis indicate that ESG rating divergence exacerbates stock price crash risk more significantly for non-state-owned firms, firms with low levels of marketization, and firms in high-pollution industries. This study provides clear actionable strategic paths and policy intervention points for investors to avoid risks, firms to optimize management, and regulators to formulate policies. Full article

Education 4.0 promotes active, personalized, and competency-based learning aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), yet most current platforms rely on centralized architectures that restrict access, agency, and adaptability. To address this problem, Web3 technologies—including blockchain, decentralized identifiers (DIDs), peer-to-peer storage, and smart contracts—enable the creation of platforms that uphold equity, data sovereignty, and pedagogical flexibility. This paper investigates how the convergence of Education 4.0 and Web3 technologies can drive the development of sustainable, inclusive, and learner-centered digital education systems. We examine two decentralized education platforms, EtherLearn and DeLMS, to assess their design affordances and limitations. Building on these insights, we propose a layered architectural framework grounded in sustainability principles. Our analysis shows that decentralized infrastructures can expand access in underserved regions, increase credential portability, empower learners with greater autonomy, and foster participatory governance through decentralized voting, token-based incentives, and community moderation. Despite these advantages, significant challenges remain around usability, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance. We conclude by identifying key research priorities at the intersection of sustainable educational technology, digital equity, and decentralized system design. Full article

Both behavioral intentions and structural constraints shape household waste disposal in low-resource settings. This study integrates the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) with Environmental Justice (EJ) to examine informal waste disposal in Vhembe District, South Africa, a region marked by infrastructural deficits and uneven municipal services. A cross-sectional survey of 399 households across four municipalities assessed five disposal behaviors, including river dumping and domestic burial. Only 8% of households used formal bins, while over 50% engaged in open or roadside dumping. Although education and income were inversely associated with harmful practices, inadequate service access was the most significant constraint on formal disposal. Logistic regression revealed that rural residents and households in underserved municipalities were significantly more likely to engage in hazardous methods, regardless of socioeconomic status. These findings extend TPB by showing that perceived behavioral control reflects not only psychological agency but also material and institutional limitations. By reframing informal disposal as a structurally conditioned response rather than a behavioral deficit, the study advances EJ theory and provides a transferable TPB–EJ framework for decentralized, justice-oriented waste governance. The results underscore the need for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-aligned interventions that integrate equitable infrastructure with context-sensitive behavioral strategies. Full article

This study conducts an empirical examination of the impact of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) performance on corporate investment efficiency, utilizing fixed-effects and mediation-effects models with a sample of 125 listed agribusiness companies in China from 2013 to 2022. The results of the fixed-effects regression indicate that superior ESG performance can effectively enhance corporate investment efficiency. Furthermore, the results of the mediation-effects analysis unveil the underlying mechanism through which ESG performance contributes to investment efficiency: by reducing agency costs and alleviating financing constraints. Moreover, the heterogeneity analysis suggests that ESG performance promotes investment efficiency more significantly in low-competition and moderately competitive market environments. By contrast, its effect may be somewhat muted in highly competitive markets. The findings of this study indicate that agribusiness companies should integrate ESG strategies, increase information transparency disclosure, and refine the allocation and management of resources in their operations. The Northern Rocky Mountains, USA contain a vast forested landscape, managed primarily by the federal government. This region contains some of the highest elevations forests and most iconic endangered and threatened species in the contiguous United States. The influence of human impacts and climate change are evident on the landscape today, with larger and more frequent fires impacting vegetation composition and recovery. This project uses paleoecological data from six lake sediment cores to investigate what drives fire across this region over the Holocene. Count regression was used to predict charcoal influx as a function of Pinus pollen accumulation rates (PAR) and percent. The results show that fire activity increases significantly with Pinus pollen, and that baseline fire activity varies significantly across sites, largely following an elevation gradient. The results of this analysis illustrate a novel way to use paleoecological data to provide valuable information to federal agencies as they prepare for future management of these ecologically valuable areas. This paper examines how early Confucianism reinterpreted sacrificial rites and reconstructed the relationship between humans and spirits through the lens of qing (情, sentiment). Traditional scholarship often views the Confucian reinterpretation of sacrifice as a shift from religious belief to a human-centered framework of rationality, morality, and humanism—emphasizing its role in moral education and social governance and thereby marginalizing or even denying the existence of guishen (鬼神, spirits and deities) and the transcendent realm they represent. Although some scholars have emphasized the religious dimensions of Confucianism, few have addressed how Confucians managed to affirm the existence of spirits while simultaneously endowing sacrificial rites with moral and humanistic meaning—that is, how they navigated the inherent tension between the human and the divine realms. Against this background, this study argues that early Confucians neither denied the existence of spirits nor reduced sacrifice to a purely ethical or political instrument. By contrast, they regarded human sentiment as the universal foundation of sacrificial practice and, through a profound and creative transformation, redirected the meaning of sacrifice toward the human world (rendao 人道), thereby establishing a new model of human–divine relations—one that affirms human agency and dignity while preserving the sanctity of the spiritual. Drawing on close readings of classical Confucian texts such as The Analects, The Book of Rites, and Xunzi, this paper identifies three core dimensions of sacrificial sentiment: remembrance, gratitude, and reverence and awe. Together, these sentiments form a relational structure between humans and guishen that enables communication and interaction while maintaining clear boundaries. In this way, Confucian sacrificial rites become a space for emotional expression without degenerating into a “carnival of emotions” or transgressing the proper separation between the human and the divine. Confucian sacrificial thought thus affirms human dignity and moral agency while upholding the transcendence of the sacred. Full article

Integrated Modeling of Composition-Resolved Source Apportionment and Dynamic Projection for Ozone Pollution in Datong

Growing ozone (O3) pollution in industrial cities urgently requires in-depth mechanistic research. This study utilized multi-year observational data from Datong City, China, from 2020 to 2024, integrating time trend diagnostics, correlation dynamics analysis, Environmental Protection Agency Positive Matrix Factorization 5.0 (EPA PMF 5.0) model simulations, and a grey prediction model (GM (1,1)) projection method to reveal the coupling mechanisms among O3 precursors. Key breakthroughs include the following: (1) A ratio of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to nitrogen oxides (NOx) of 1.5 clearly distinguishes between NOx-constrained (winter) and VOC-sensitive (summer) modes, a conclusion validated by the strong negative correlation between O3 and NOx (r = −0.80, p < 0.01) and the dominant role of NO titration. (2) Aromatic compounds (toluene, xylene) used as solvents in industrial emissions, despite accounting for only 7.9% of VOC mass, drove 37.1% of ozone formation potential (OFP), while petrochemical and paint production (accounting for 12.2% of VOC mass) contributed only 0.3% of OFP. (3) Quantitative analysis of OFP using PMF identified natural gas/fuel gas use and leakage (accounting for 34.9% of OFP) and solvent use (accounting for 37.1% of OFP) as key control targets. (4) The GM (1,1) model predicts that, despite a decrease in VOC concentrations (−15.7%) and an increase in NOx concentrations (+2.4%), O3 concentrations will rise to 169.7 μg m−3 by 2025 (an increase of 7.4% compared to 2024), indicating an improvement in photochemical efficiency. We have established an activity-oriented prioritization framework targeting high-OFP species from key sources. This provides a scientific basis for precise O3 emission reductions consistent with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for synergistic pollution/carbon governance. Full article
