Water utilities are increasingly turning to digital solutions to promote conservation behaviours among households; however, traditional campaigns often suffer from limited personalisation, low interactivity, and modest long-term impact. Though computer-tailored and recommender systems (RSs) may offer personalisation, these systems lack a generalised framework that integrates behavioural theory with system design. This study addresses this research gap by introducing a novel framework that unites behavioural science, user experience (UX) design, and adaptive digital feedback to foster water-conscious practices at the residential level. The model draws on established behavioural theories, including the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the Transtheoretical Model, and Intervention Mapping, to ensure that tailored recommendations align with users’ psychological drivers, behavioural readiness, and daily routines. An industry-first prototype RS was developed and evaluated through an online survey (N = 300), assessing user perceptions of relevance, motivation, ease of use, and likelihood of action. The results reveal strong support for personalised suggestions, with 82% of respondents agreeing that personalised recommendations would help conserve water, and 76% indicating incentives would motivate adoption. This evidence indicates early acceptance and high potential impact. This study also addresses a critical research gap: no generic model previously existed to guide the integration of RSs with behaviour change interventions in water demand management. Broader implications are also discussed for applying the model to other sustainability domains such as energy use, waste reduction, and climate adaptation. Full article

Background/Objectives: Chronic low back pain is the leading global cause of disability, with a growing prevalence and socioeconomic burden. Despite strong evidence supporting exercise therapy (ET) as a primary treatment, adherence rates remain low, compromising outcomes and increasing healthcare costs. Research on contributing factors to adherence to ET in non-specific chronic low back pain (nsCLBP) is limited. This systematic review aimed to reconceptualise contributors to adherence, using a conceptual framework to explore their interrelations and complexity by integrating quantitative and qualitative research. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were searched, followed by a two-phase screening process. Risk of Bias (RoB), certainty assessment and level of evidence were assessed independently. Results: Eight qualitative and eleven quantitative studies were included, the latter divided into nine RCTs and two cohort studies. Overall, eight included studies showed low RoB, seven showed some concerns, and four presented high RoB. Synthesis identified internal, external, and intervention-related contributing factors. These factors were presented in a conceptual framework figure, highlighting that adherence should not be viewed as a binary concept but rather as a dynamic behaviour shaped by interrelated factors. Moderate-certainty evidence supports the impact of psychosocial factors, healthcare professional (HCP) characteristics, environmental and time-related factors, program design, progression, home-exercise program (HEP), modalities, and follow-up. Low-to-moderate-certainty evidence suggests beliefs, patient-related characteristics, and treatment setting also impact adherence. Low-certainty evidence indicates that feedback, symptoms and impairments, and confidence possibly impact adherence. Conclusions: This systematic review highlights the complex, context-dependent interplay of factors impacting adherence to ET in individuals with nsCLBP. Overall, these findings underscore the need for personalised, context-sensitive interventions that address the broad spectrum of factors, while future research should focus on validated adherence assessment tools. This study investigates the implementation and impact of the Guided Personalised Learning (GPL) model, a structured pedagogical framework designed to operationalise personalised and student-centred learning in STEM higher education. The GPL model integrates three interconnected components: a three-dimensional knowledge and skill grid, Interactive Learning Progress Assessments (ILPA), and an adaptive learning resource pool. These components were embedded into two undergraduate engineering modules, Network Engineering and Software Engineering, at a UK university. A mixed-method evaluation, centred on student attainment data across two academic years, revealed statistically significant improvements among students who engaged with GPL, particularly those who completed ILPA activities. Participation was associated with higher mean grades, increased proportions of high achievers, and reduced failure rates. These findings demonstrate the GPL model’s effectiveness in supporting learner autonomy, formative assessment, and targeted feedback, while offering a scalable strategy for integrating personalised learning into mainstream STEM curricula. Background: Sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) and dynapenia (loss of strength) are prevalent in older adults aged 70 years and over. Both have an impact on their functional ability and quality of life, with type II muscle fibres being particularly affected. Although traditional resistance training (TRT) is effective, it presents technical difficulties and an increased risk of injury among this vulnerable population. Isometric strength training (IST) is a potentially safer, more accessible and more effective alternative. Objective: To describe the protocol of a single-arm, pre-post intervention trial designed to evaluate the efficacy and applicability of a 16-week IST programme on muscle strength, skeletal muscle mass, quality of life and applicability (safety, acceptability, perceived difficulty) in 18 older adults aged 70 years and above with a diagnosis of sarcopenia and dynapenia. The influence of genetic and environmental factors on the variability of response to IST will also be explored. Methodology: The participants, who have all been diagnosed with sarcopenia according to EWGSOP2 (European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2) criteria, will perform two IST sessions per week for 16 weeks. Each 30-min session will consist of one progressive set (total duration 45 s to 90 s) for each of the eight major muscle groups. This series will include phases at 20% and 40% of individual Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC), culminating in 100% Maximal Effort (ME), using the CIEX SYSTEM machine with visual feedback. The primary outcome variables will be: change in knee extensor MVIC and change in Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass Index (ASMMI). Secondary variables will be measured (other components of sarcopenia, quality of life by EQ-5D-5L, use of Likert scales, posture and physiological variables), and saliva samples will be collected for exploratory genetic analyses. The main statistical analyses will be performed with t-tests for related samples or their non-parametric analogues. Discussion: This protocol details a specific IST intervention and a comprehensive evaluation plan. The results are expected to provide evidence on the feasibility and effects of IST among older adults with sarcopenia and dynapenia. Understanding individual variability in response, including genetic influence, could inform the design of more personalised and effective exercise strategies for this population in the future. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in online learning environments has transformed the way students engage with educational content, offering personalised learning experiences, instant feedback, and scalable support. This study investigates the role of AI-driven chatbots in the Pedagogical Information and Communication Technology (ICTPED) Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), a professional development course aimed at enhancing teachers’ Professional Digital Competence (PDC). The study pursues two connected aims: (1) to examine how chatbots support content comprehension, self-regulated learning, and engagement among pre- and in-service teachers, and (2) to explore, through a cultural-historical perspective, how chatbot use contributes to the development of students’ digital agency. Based on data from 46 students, collected through structured questionnaires and follow-up interviews, the findings show that chatbots functioned as interactive learning partners, helping students clarify complex concepts, generate learning resources, and engage in reflection—thereby supporting their PDC. At the same time, chatbot interactions mediated learners’ development of digital agency, enabling them to critically interact with digital tools and navigate online learning environments effectively. However, challenges such as over-reliance on AI-generated responses, inclusivity issues, and concerns regarding content accuracy were also identified. The results underscore the need for improved chatbot design, pedagogical scaffolding, and ethical considerations in AI-assisted learning. Future research should explore the long-term impact of chatbots on students’ learning and the implications of AI-driven tools for digital agency development in online education. Full article

Curriculum reform in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, emphasises the need for change, arguing that current educational arrangements must better meet children’s future needs. A key recommendation advocates for greater flexibility in teaching and learning to support personalisation, addressing the wide variation in children’s learning needs. This qualitative study critically examines four Stage 1 narrative writing units, focusing on whether personalised writing practices—such as opportunities for scaffolding and feedback, choice in writing topics, and flexibility in pacing—are embedded in these centralised curriculum materials. Drawing on Bernstein’s theoretical concept of framing, we analyse the extent to which these practices are integrated into the units. Our analysis reveals a predominance of strong framing, characterised by tightly controlled writing organisation, limited topic choices, and rigid pacing. These constraints offer few opportunities for personalisation. This study highlights critical gaps in the Stage 1 narrative writing units, suggesting that without critical adaptation by teachers, these units risk perpetuating ineffective writing instruction and hindering children’s writing development. This study calls for further research into the impact of centralised curriculum materials on teachers’ writing instruction and the development of children’s writing knowledge and skills, with a particular focus on how personalisation can be integrated within these units to improve writing outcomes for all children. The DECIDE project entitled “Career choices competencies for the post-pandemic future using multicriteria decision-making”, aimed to empower young individuals in their career decision-making by providing them with personalised learning sources and tools to monitor the development of essential career competencies. This paper presents the findings from evaluating two key components of the DECIDE project: an e-guide for developing career competencies and a web-based application that monitors individuals’ progress in competency development. These tools help young people identify the skills and knowledge they lack to meet the demands of employers for sustainable and innovative career paths. The e-guide was designed as a self-learning programme that guides users through interactive models focused on building the competencies required for sustainable and innovative career profiles. Pre-tests and post-tests were developed to assess the effectiveness of the e-guide and measure the participants’ competency levels before and after engaging with the learning content. The application utilises advanced algorithms and visualisation techniques to analyse pre-test and post-test data, identify competency gaps, and provide users with a clear understanding of their competency development progress and areas for further improvements. The results of the testing and user feedback indicate that the developed tools positively impacted the development of career competencies. The study reveals that the e-guide provided educational value and effectively supported self-directed learning. At the same time, the web-based application offered a valuable tool for self-assessment and identifying competency gaps in career decision-making. Full article

Existing buildings in the European Union account for 40% of its energy consumption. To significantly reduce this impact, annual deep energy renovation rates should triple by the end of the 2020s. However, the lack of automation in the construction industry has hindered energy renovation efforts. Horizon Europe’s INPERSO project (Industrialised and Personalised Renovation for Sustainable Societies) aims to create a user-centered energy rehabilitation method based on industrialized technologies and systems, enhancing efficiency and building performance. To bridge the gap between predictions and real-world outcomes, the 22 project partners—using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) process—devised a list of key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluating rehabilitation based on economic, energy, environmental, social, and technological factors. Adopting a human-centric approach, these project partners aim to minimize the technologies’ environmental impact while optimizing users’ comfort and experience. The indicators are designed to evaluate performance at every stage of the renovation process, enabling continuous feedback and user engagement and ultimately ensuring that projected energy savings are met throughout the building’s lifespan. The KPIs selected for INPERSO provide a solid framework for evaluating and monitoring sustainable renovation. However, challenges such as administrative reluctance and user disruption must be addressed to further boost the adoption of deep energy renovations. Full article

This qualitative study explores the perceptions of English language students regarding the use of the generative AI tool, ChatGPT, as a supportive tool for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students in a New Zealand university context. Using self-determination theory (SDT) as an explanatory framework, this study explores how ChatGPT impacts students’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness in their language-learning experience. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with 24 postgraduate EAP students and the data are analysed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest that ChatGPT has the potential to support students’ needs for autonomy and competence by providing flexibility, personalised feedback and a safe space for practice. However, the impact on relatedness needs is mixed, with some students experiencing a sense of companionship and others expressing concerns about reduced human interaction. While students acknowledge the benefits of ChatGPT, they also emphasise the importance of human-teacher interactivity and empathy. The findings provide theoretical insights and practical recommendations for educators seeking to integrate generative AI tools effectively into language education. Full article

We investigate personalised feedback mechanisms to help drivers regulate their emotions, aiming to improve road safety. We systematically evaluate driver-preferred feedback modalities and their impact on emotional states. Using unobtrusive vision-based emotion detection and self-labeling, we captured the emotional states and feedback preferences of 21 participants in a simulated driving environment. Results show that in-car feedback systems effectively influence drivers’ emotional states, with participants reporting positive experiences and varying preferences based on their emotions. We also developed a machine learning classification system using facial marker data to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach for classifying emotional states. Our contributions include design guidelines for tailored feedback systems, a systematic analysis of user reactions across three feedback channels with variations, an emotion classification system, and a dataset with labeled face landmark annotations for future research. Web-based educational systems collect tremendous amounts of electronic data, ranging from simple histories of students’ interactions with the system to detailed traces of their reasoning. However, less attention has been given to the pedagogical interaction data of customised learning in a gamification environment. This study aims to research user experience, communication methods, and feedback and survey functionalities among the existing learning management system; understand the data flow of the online study feedback loop; propose the design of a personalised feedback system; and conclude with a discussion of the findings from the collected experiment data. We will test the importance of gamification learning and analytics learning, as well as conduct a literature review and laboratory experiment to examine how they can influence the effectiveness of monetary incentive schemes. This research will explain the significance of gamification learning and personalised feedback on motivation and performance during the learning journey. Full article

With the development of the digital economy, the algorithms and big data technologies of e-commerce platforms have gradually turned into double-edged swords. While realising personalised recommendations, they also provide information technology support for the use of algorithmic prices to discriminate and extract residual value from consumers. Consumers frequently use Black Cat and third-party media to complain, resulting in a significant negative impact. Therefore, in order to regulate algorithmic price discrimination, using e-commerce platforms, local governments and consumers act as game subjects, taking an evolutionary game approach. We analyse the impact of different situations and factors on the system’s evolutionary stability strategy and conduct its verification via simulation experiments. This study shows that several measures, such as increasing cooperation with the media; establishing clear regulatory rules to reduce the extent of algorithmic price discrimination and the grey revenue of e-commerce platforms; establishing a long-term mechanism for consumer feedback; improving rewards and punishments to increase the probability of successful regulation and penalties by local governments; sharing information to reduce the cost of consumer regulation; and setting reasonable bonus thresholds based on government revenue and consumer regulation costs, can effectively regulate algorithmic price discrimination and promote the sustainable development of e-commerce platforms. The recommended first-line therapy in type 2 diabetes (T2D) is lifestyle modification. In many patients, such interventions fail, and disease progresses inexorably to medication requirement. A potential reason for the failure of standard nutritional interventions is the use of generic dietary advice, with no personalisation to account for differences in the effect of food on blood glucose between different individuals. Another is the lack of instant feedback on the impact of dietary modification on glycaemic control, which supports sustained behaviour change. The use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) may help address both these shortcomings. We conducted an observational study to explore how personalised nutritional information impacts glycaemic control and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of well-being. Free-living people with T2D eating their normal diet were provided with personalised nutritional recommendations by state-registered nutritionists based on the CGM-enabled analysis of individual post-prandial glycaemic responses (PPGRs). Participants demonstrated considerable inter-individual differences in PPGRs, reductions in post-prandial incremental area under the curve (iAUC) and daytime AUC, and improvements in energy levels, ability to concentrate, and other PROMs. These results suggest a role for personalised nutritional recommendations based on individual-level understanding of PPGRs in the non-pharmaceutical management of T2D. The emergence of wearable sensors that allow for unobtrusive monitoring of physiological and behavioural patterns introduces new opportunities to study the impact of stress in a real-world context. This study explores to what extent within-subject trends in daily Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and daily HRV fluctuations are associated with longitudinal changes in stress, depression, anxiety, and somatisation. Nine Dutch police officers collected daily nocturnal HRV data using an Oura ring during 15–55 weeks. Participants filled in the Four-Dimensional Symptoms Questionnaire every 5 weeks. A sample of 47 five-week observations was collected and analysed using multiple regression. After controlling for trends in total sleep time, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and alcohol use, an increasing trend in the seven-day rolling standard deviation of the HRV (HRVsd) was associated with increases in stress and somatisation over 5 weeks. Furthermore, an increasing HRV trend buffered against the association between HRVsd trend and somatisation change, undoing this association when it was combined with increasing HRV. Depression and anxiety could not be related to trends in HRV or HRVsd, which was related to observed floor effects. These results show that monitoring trends in daily HRV via wearables holds promise for automated stress monitoring and providing personalised feedback. Full article

This article provides a vision of the importance of the recovery process for the prevention of injuries in young athletes. From a sports psychology perspective, it presents a proposal for an optimisation programme to reduce the negative impact of exertion and subsequent risk of injury. The 4BR programme consists of three sub-programmes (technician advice, vulnerability detection, and the implementation of four recovery habit blocks). An interdisciplinary approach is taken to configure the four healthy blocks: nutrition–hydration, relaxation–rest, social life and personal moments. It demonstrates the importance of personalised adaptation to the sports context and moment in order to achieve maximum effectiveness of the proposed 4BR programme, which comprises workshops, exercises, evaluation systems and information feedback. The presented programme facilitates recovery, optimizes the return to training and reduces the risk of intrinsic injuries in young people. The conclusion drawn from the study is that there is a need to conduct further research to find empirical evidence of the positive effects of applying the 4BR programme to different sports.
