Background: Preschool bedroom television placement represents an established risk factor for negative psychological and behavioral outcomes in adolescence. Girls and boys have different risk factors for developmental psychopathology. It is unclear if childhood sport participation can act as a protective factor for the potential maladaptive behaviors associated with having a bedroom television in early childhood. Methods: This study aims to evaluate the impact of having a bedroom television in early childhood on later externalizing behaviors while examining the potential beneficial role of extracurricular sport participation in middle childhood using the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (Canada). We examine subsequent teacher-reported psycho-social outcomes by the end of sixth grade. Linear regression is used to examine the interaction between child-reported bedroom television placement (age 4 years) and parent-reported childhood sport participation trajectories (ages 6 to 10 years) in predicting behavioral outcomes at age 12 years. Results: For boys, extracurricular sport amplified the relationship between having a preschool bedroom television and subsequent physical aggression (b = 0.95, SE = 0.32, p < 0.001) and ADHD symptoms (b = 0.59, SE = 0.30, p ≤ 0.05), beyond individual and family characteristics. No interaction results were found for girls; however, consistent sport participation between ages 6 and 10 years resulted in a decrease in ADHD symptoms in girls (b = −0.329, SE = 0.102, p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Unexpectedly, for boys exposed to early bedroom television, consistently participating in extracurricular sport in childhood exacerbated long-term behavioral risks. Social unpreparedness from bedroom television placement countered the intended benefits of sport. This private access to screens might influence sedentary, unsupervised, isolated activity that increases the chances of viewing violence and reduces opportunities for social interaction. Full article

Purpose: This study investigated the attributes of confession pages on Facebook, their role within social networks, and their impact on society. It also explored their defining traits, the need for confession pages and the effects of anonymity. Methodology: The research methodology involved coding 1280 posts extracted from select pages, and semi-structured in-depth interviews with 15 prominent followers. Findings: Anonymity was found to be important because it helps individuals avoid social repercussions. Prominent recurring themes included formal behavior, relationships, and sexuality, topics that frequently involve social sanctions and penalties. The study also underscored the sense of community fostered by interaction between writers posting on confession pages and readers of these posts. The current study suggests that confession pages reflect society-level value preferences that shape interaction on social media according to Hofstede’s framework. Moreover, different confession groups serve to satisfy different needs, aligning with the theory of uses and gratifications in communication media. Practical implications: Engagement was shown by readers who extended offers to help and provided suggestions to support authors facing different challenges. Social implications: The motivations of anonymity for contributors to communities fostered through writer–reader interactions on the platform. Value: An in-depth examination of confession within contemporary society, redefining the contemporary landscape of confession, shedding light on its various perspectives within the public internet sphere, and thus contributing to comprehension of the different needs for anonymous expression. Twice-exceptional students, who are both gifted and present with characteristics of neurodiversity such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), possess distinctive academic and socio-emotional needs that necessitate individualized educational strategies. This qualitative case study explores the academic and socio-emotional experiences of Murat, an eighth-grade learner identified as gifted and diagnosed with ASD, from the perspectives of the student himself, his mother, and his teachers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed that Murat achieved success in mathematics and science, particularly within enriched, strength-oriented environments that accommodated his sensory sensitivities. Despite challenges in social skills and group participation, he benefited considerably from teacher scaffolding and interactive pedagogies. His mother’s active engagement and strong family–school collaboration emerged as pivotal factors in his developmental progress. This study extends beyond individual challenges to highlight the potential strengths that arise from by the intersection of neurodiversity and giftedness. Additionally, it contributes to the limited body of literature exploring how the notion of twice-exceptionality manifests within underrepresented educational contexts. Future research could investigate diverse socio-cultural contexts and develop strategies to enhance teacher preparation and family engagement in supporting gifted learners with ASD. Full article

Trust plays a pivotal role in individuals’ interactions with technological systems, and those incorporating artificial intelligence present significantly greater challenges than traditional systems. The current landscape of higher education is increasingly shaped by the integration of AI assistants into students’ classroom experiences. Their appropriate use is closely tied to the level of trust placed in these tools, as well as the strategies adopted to critically assess the accuracy of AI-generated content. However, scholarly attention to this dimension remains limited. To explore these dynamics, this study applied the POTDAI evaluation framework to a sample of 132 engineering and social sciences students at Camilo José Cela University in Madrid, Spain. The findings reveal a general lack of trust in AI assistants despite their extensive use, common reliance on inadequate verification methods, and a notable skepticism regarding professors’ ability to detect AI-related errors. Additionally, students demonstrated a concerning misperception of the capabilities of different AI models, often favoring less advanced or less appropriate tools. These results underscore the urgent need to establish a reliable verification protocol accessible to both students and faculty, and to further investigate the reasons why students opt for limited tools over the more powerful alternatives made available to them. Dyadic co-construction, the mutual adaptation that occurs between dogs and their owners, is often discussed in terms of cooperation and participation, yet it remains poorly defined and under-conceptualized in the literature. This review proposed that self-determination theory (SDT), with its three core psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness (attachment)—offers a valuable framework for understanding this phenomenon within a dyadic context. The objectives of this review were twofold: (1) to conceptualize co-construction in owner–dog interactions through the lens of SDT, and (2) to propose methodological approaches for studying this process, while acknowledging their current limitations. Dyadic co-construction emerges as a dynamic, evolving process of mutual influence, shaped by biopsychosocial factors, individual and shared experiences, and the physical and social environments of both human and dog, as well as the dyad as a unit. Depending on the nature of the interaction, co-construction can be beneficial or detrimental. Positive training practices and secure attachment patterns in both humans and dogs tend to foster more harmonious co-construction, whereas aversive methods and insecure attachment may hinder it. Although existing methodologies offer promising insights into this process, they often lack standardization, statistical robustness, and true bidirectionality. This review underscores the need for more integrative, longitudinal, and empirically grounded approaches to fully capture the complexity and clinical relevance of owner–dog dyadic co-construction. The growing complexity of distribution-level virtual power plants (VPPs) demands a rethinking of how flexible demand is modeled, aggregated, and dispatched under uncertainty. Traditional optimization frameworks often rely on deterministic or homogeneous assumptions about end-user behavior, thereby overestimating controllability and underestimating risk. In this paper, we propose a behavior-aware, two-stage stochastic dispatch framework for VPPs that explicitly models heterogeneous user participation via integrated behavioral economics and social interaction structures. At the behavioral layer, user responses to demand response (DR) incentives are captured using a Prospect Theory-based utility function, parameterized by loss aversion, nonlinear gain perception, and subjective probability weighting. In parallel, social influence dynamics are modeled using a peer interaction network that modulates individual participation probabilities through local contagion effects. These two mechanisms are combined to produce a high-dimensional, time-varying participation map across user classes, including residential, commercial, and industrial actors. This probabilistic behavioral landscape is embedded within a scenario-based two-stage stochastic optimization model. The first stage determines pre-committed dispatch quantities across flexible loads, electric vehicles, and distributed storage systems, while the second stage executes real-time recourse based on realized participation trajectories. The dispatch model includes physical constraints (e.g., energy balance, network limits), behavioral fatigue, and the intertemporal coupling of flexible resources. A scenario reduction technique and the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) metric are used to ensure computational tractability and robustness against extreme behavior deviations. Full article

We review the evolution of the concept of utility in economics, addressing the conceptual and terminological fragmentation that characterises the interdisciplinary debate. This study adopts the scoping review framework to systematically analyse the main theoretical approaches, ranging from utility as preference to utility as subjective satisfaction and well-being. Particular attention is paid to procedural utility, i.e., the utility derived from the way decisions are made and interactions develop, divided into three areas: individual, linked to autonomy and self-determination; interpersonal, related to the quality of social relations; and institutional, referring to participation and recognition. The analysis is based on three aspects: (i) how different theoretical traditions have interpreted utility and well-being; (ii) what convergences and divergences emerge in the contemporary literature; (iii) and what implications these factors have for research and public policy. We highlight the complementarity between approaches and suggest extending economic reflection to dimensions that are central to the well-being of individuals and societies. The insights of this study have public policy implications, indicating that, through well-defined institutions, distributive justice, and welfare systems, taxpayers’ hedonic utility can be transformed into the chrematistic utility of beneficiaries. Individuals with severe intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour often face limited access to effective therapeutic interventions, as conventional approaches like cognitive behavioural therapy may not be suitable. Creative arts therapies (CATs), psychomotor therapy, and play therapy have emerged as promising non-verbal alternatives, yet their use in this population remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize the existing evidence on the application and outcomes of these interventions for individuals with severe intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. A comprehensive search was conducted across eight databases in May 2023 (with an update of the search in June 2025). Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria, namely eight quantitative and five qualitative designs. Interventions included music therapy (n = 7), art therapy (n = 4), a combination of both (n = 1), and play therapy (n = 1); no studies on psychomotor therapy were identified. Reported outcomes were grouped into five domains: cognitive, psychological and emotional, social and interactional, communicative, and creative domain. Improvements were observed in areas such as attention, emotional regulation, social responsiveness, and communicative expression, particularly in structured and attuned therapeutic environments. However, most studies had methodological limitations, including small sample sizes and limited standardisation. These findings suggest potential benefits of CATs and play therapy, while highlighting the need for further research into underrepresented modalities and the use of rigorous single-case experimental designs. In recent years, animal welfare scientists working in professionally managed settings have increasingly focused on promoting resilience to enhance the quality of life of individual animals. Resilience—defined as an animal’s capacity to be minimally affected by a disturbance or to rapidly return to the physiological, behavioral, cognitive, health, affective, and production states that pertained before exposure to a disturbance—involves various systems and dynamic processes. There is evidence that resilience can be measured using a suite of species-specific indicators, including both behavioral measures and physiological biomarkers. These indicators should be tracked for individuals of the same species over time and across various conditions, events, and experiences. Large-scale, multi-institutional studies allow welfare scientists to collect cross-sectional data to identify “resilient phenotypes” for the species of interest. Ultimately, the focus should be on improving outcomes for individual animals as they face particular stressors, challenges, and environmental disturbances over their lifetime. Animal care specialists play a crucial role in helping animals build resilience by providing opportunities to engage in cognitive challenges, stimulating environments, and species-appropriate social interactions. This review defines resilience for animal welfare scientists, as well as discusses how to measure and promote resilience in animals residing in zoos and aquariums. Full article

Social researchers have extensively examined the systematic role played by digital platforms, algorithms and datafication processes in shaping social life. In response to the overwhelming power asymmetries, datafication processes and extractive conditions imposed on users, different scholars have emphasized the need for educational initiatives that foster forms of critical digital literacy. This article explores how critical pedagogical approaches can be embedded into research and teaching practices to support the analysis of everyday media experiences. Specifically, we discuss four case studies drawn from our prior and ongoing research on youth: (i) the use of autoethnographic diaries; (ii) the constitution of youth juries; (iii) the development of a critical digital literacy educational manual; (iv) the implementation of interactive workshops. We contend that these interventions share three key elements, i.e., a critical theory stance, a qualitative orientation, and the cultivation of situated knowledge, the intertwinement of which can promote instances of critical awareness and reflexivity, challenging the individualism and resignation frequently characteristic of contemporary digital life. We use this set of cases to offer a practical, multi-level approach for researchers and educators, showing how the theoretical principles of critical pedagogy can be put into concrete practices, addressing critical digital literacy across different levels. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that manifests in early childhood and persists throughout an individual’s life. Characterized by a range of symptoms affecting social interaction, communication, and behavior, ASD presents a spectrum of varying degrees of severity and presentation. Recent research emphasizes the importance of understanding the diverse manifestations of ASD across different populations. Core features include social communication differences and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs), often linked to co-occurring conditions such as anxiety and ADHD. The study of ASD has evolved significantly, highlighting the need for individualized approaches to diagnosis and intervention. This paper explores current knowledge on ASD, examining the latest research findings and discussing future directions for improving the lives of those affected by the disorder. The purpose is to present a map of the field and an evidence-strength framing of what is known and unknown, and where the evidence is equivocal. Key areas of focus include behavioral, psychological, genetic, metabolic, immunological, and neurological features, as well as developmental and maturational factors. In recent years, the proliferation of social platforms has drastically transformed how individuals interact, organize, and share information. In this scenario, there has been an unprecedented increase in the scale and complexity of interactions and, at the same time, little to no research about certain fringe social platforms. In this paper, we present a multi-dimensional framework for characterizing nodes and hyperedges in social hypernetworks, with a focus on the understudied alt-right platform Scored.co. Our approach integrates the possibility of studying higher-order interactions, thanks to the hypernetwork representation, and various node features such as user activity, sentiment, and toxicity, with the aim of defining distinct user archetypes and understanding their roles within the network. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from Scored.co, consisting of more than 4.4 M posts and 36.9 M comments, we analyze the dynamics of these archetypes over time and explore their interactions and influence within the community. We identify eight archetypes, with the largest group comprising over 15,000 users, and observe that 44% of interactions involve at least five participants, highlighting the importance of higher-order modeling. Furthermore, we find significant archetype transitions and stable yet locally dense interaction patterns, with users exposed to roughly 1000 unique peers on average. The framework’s versatility allows for detailed analysis of both individual user behaviors and broader social structures. Our findings highlight the importance of higher-order interactions and node features in understanding social dynamics, and offer new insights into the roles and behaviors that emerge in complex online environments. Individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) often experience sleep disturbances and are frequently exposed to light during nighttime hours. Our previous studies using the Contactin-associated protein-like 2 (Cntnap2) knockout (KO) mouse model of NDDs demonstrated that nighttime light exposure adversely affected behavioral measures. In this study, we exposed wild-type (WT) and Cntnap2 KO mice to an ultradian lighting cycle (T7), which alternates 3.5 h of light and 3.5 h of darkness, hypothesizing that this lighting protocol would mimic the impact of nighttime light exposure seen in standard light–dark cycles with dim light at night (DLaN). However, adult WT and Cntnap2 KO mice held under the T7 cycle did not show the increased grooming behavior or reduced social interaction observed in Cntnap2 KO mice exposed to DLaN. The T7 cycle lengthened the circadian period and weakened the rhythm amplitude without abolishing rhythmicity in either genotype. Finally, opposite to DLaN, neither the T7 cycle nor constant darkness (DD) elicited an increase in cFos expression in the basolateral amygdala. These results demonstrate that the adverse effects of nighttime light exposure in an NDD model depend on the extent of the circadian disruption rather than light exposure alone, emphasizing the importance of circadian stability as a protective factor in NDDs. (1) Background: Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) are a major cause of mortality among older adults globally. The cognitive decline associated with ADRD often reduces individuals’ ability to live independently over time, increasing reliance on caregivers. Assistive and socially assistive robots offer a promising means of supporting independent living. This narrative review examined how older adults with ADRD, their caregivers, and healthcare providers perceive and experience interactions with robots. (2) Methods: Guided by the Population, Phenomenon of Interest, and Context (PICo) framework, five databases were searched. Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Extracted data were summarized, and a convergent synthesis integrated qualitative and quantitative findings. (3) Results: Drawing on content analysis, the qualitative findings were organized into three domains: user perceptions and experiences, barriers to adoption, and suggestions for improvement. Quantitative results emphasized usability, usefulness, acceptance, satisfaction, feature preferences, and barriers. While most stakeholders viewed robots as beneficial, acceptance was shaped by factors such as design features, timing of introduction, familiarity with technology, and perceived need. (4) Conclusions: This review highlights priorities for future research and development, including personalization, ethical safeguards, and caregiver integration, to improve the acceptance and effectiveness of robot-assisted support for individuals with cognitive impairment. The rapid increase in global smartphone usage and the range of capabilities they offer have resulted in an overdependence on them, leading to the term nomophobia. Nomophobia refers to the psychological discomfort or anxiety experienced when an individual is unable to use or does not have access to their mobile phone, and it is a phenomenon that warrants research attention due to its psychological and social implications. The aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between nomophobia and the time spent on mobile usage, attachment in close romantic relationships, and loneliness. Participants included 300 adults from Cyprus who were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling methods. Data were gathered using an internet-based questionnaire that assessed participants’ time spent on mobile usage, their attachment styles in close relationships, and their level and type of loneliness. The results suggest that (a) anxiety dimension and time spent on mobile phone are significant predictors of nomophobia, (b) higher levels of nomophobia are associated with an insecure attachment style, (c) more severe levels of nomophobia are associated with higher levels of loneliness, and (d) increased time spent on mobile usage is linked to higher levels of nomophobia. The findings suggest that the widespread emergence of nomophobia raises important concerns, highlighting the need for the development of educational programs that promote balanced mobile usage and encourage direct social interaction. The significance of targeted interventions that address mobile phone regulation and attachment-related vulnerabilities is emphasized. Full article
