This study systematically investigates the effects of aging treatment (AT) on the microstructure and properties of Cr/DLC coatings deposited via cathodic arc ion plating onto the surface of ECAP-7075 aluminum alloy. Utilizing a comprehensive approach combining performance tests (nanoindentation, nanoscratch testing, dynamic polarization analysis) with characterization tests (scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), the synergistic effects of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and aging treatment(AT) were elucidated. The results demonstrate that the combined ECAP and AT significantly enhance the coating’s performance. Specifically, AT promotes the precipitation of η’ phase within the 7075 aluminum alloy substrate, increases the size of Cr7C3 crystallites in the Cr-based interlayer, improves the crystallinity of the Cr7C3 phase on the (060) or (242) crystal planes, and elevates the sp3-C/sp2-C ratio in the diamond-like carbon(DLC) top layer, leading to partial healing of defects and a denser overall coating structure. These microstructural transformations, induced by AT, result in substantial improvements in the mechanical properties (hardness reaching 5.2 GPa, bond strength achieving 15.1 N) and corrosion resistance (corrosion potential increasing to -0.698 V) of the Cr/DLC-coated ECAP-7075 aluminum alloy. This enhanced combination of properties makes these coatings particularly well-suited for high-performance aerospace components requiring both wear resistance and corrosion protection in demanding environments. Single crystals of the layered EuRECuTe3 series with RE = Nd, Sm, Tb and Dy are obtained for the first time, completing the series of studies on quaternary tellurides synthesized using the halide flux method. These compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (no. 62) with unit cell parameters ranging from a = 11.5634(7) Å, b = 4.3792(3) Å and c = 14.3781(9) Å for EuNdCuTe3 to a = 11.2695(7) Å, b = 4.3178(3) Å and c = 14.3304(9) Å for EuDyCuTe3. The influence of prismatic polyhedra [EuTe6+1]7− structural units on the stabilization of 3d framework composed by 2d layered fragments [RECuTe3]2−, which have a key role in the interlayer interaction, is established. A comparative analysis of structural and magnetic properties dependence on the rare-earth element radius ri(RE3+) in the EuRECuTe3 series (RE = Sc, Y, Nd–Lu) is carried out. The structural contraction, including decrease in degree of tetrahedral polyhedra distortion, bond lengths shortening and unit cell volume shrinking with increasing ri(RE3+), is established. It is shown that the structural alternation leads to transition from ferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic ordering. It was established that changes in the cationic sublattice have a more significant impact on structural transitions in the series of quaternary tellurides than changes in the anionic sublattice. The electronic structure and elastic and dynamic properties were estimated using ab initio calculations. The exfoliation energy for each compound is obtained by estimation of monolayer ground state energy as a result of structure relaxation. The symmetry and structural properties of monolayer EuRECuTe3 (RE = Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy) compound are established and the orthorhombic symmetry is obtained with layer group pm2_1b. Full article

At present, most studies in the field of Wire-Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing (W-FSAM) adopt the side wire feeding method. However, the side wire feeding method has problems in that the wire feeding tube occupies working space and the tool is prone to clogging. To address this, this study proposes a Coaxial Wire Feeding-Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing (CWF-FSAM) method. The CWF-FSAM device adopts a structure where a fixed shaft is coaxially nested inside the stirring shaft, and the fixed shaft is machined with through-channels along the circumferential direction for wire feeding, which eliminates the limitation of the wire feeding tube. This study elaborates on the structure of the CWF-FSAM device, then uses 6061 aluminum alloy as the deposition material for additive manufacturing, and conducts characterization and analysis on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited components. The results show that the interlayer bonding of the deposited components is dense without defects. The components exhibit uniform and fine equiaxed grains, with the average grain sizes of the top, middle, and bottom parts being 3.52 µm, 3.35 µm, and 4.07 µm, respectively. In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile strengths of the components along the building direction (BD) and longitudinal direction (LD) both reach 70% of that of the base material (BM) wire. The hardness ranges from 36 HV to 42 HV. In addition, closed-loop components were prepared by continuous counterclockwise deposition using the CWF-FSAM device. The tensile strengths of the overlapping area, straight section, and corner were 124.45 MPa, 125.88 MPa, and 126.95 MPa, respectively. The overall performance of the closed-loop components is uniform and stable, which indicates that the CWF-FSAM-deposited components have good mechanical property isotropy. Full article

Additively manufactured continuous fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) offer promising mechanical properties for engineering applications, including aerospace and automotive load-bearing structures. However, challenges such as weak interlayer bonding and low strength compared to traditional composites remain. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the effects of nitrogen (N2) purging during printing and thermal annealing after printing on the tensile performance of additively manufactured CFRPs. Tensile tests were conducted on Onyx specimens produced by material extrusion and reinforced with continuous carbon fibre filaments (CFF), glass fibre filaments (GFF), or Kevlar fibre filaments (KFF). Results showed that N2-purging and post-annealing had different effects on the tensile properties of various CFRPs. Particularly, N2-purging, post-annealing, and their combination enhanced both the Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of KFF/Onyx specimens. For GFF/Onyx specimens, both treatments had a minor effect on the Young’s modulus but enhanced UTS. CFF/Onyx specimens exhibited improved Young’s modulus with N2-purging, while both treatments reduced UTS. The different response of the CFRPs was associated with diverse governing failure mechanisms, as proved by microstructural and fracture surface inspection. Additionally, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses also revealed the thermal behaviour and crystal structures that influence the mechanical properties of CFRPs. Direct fusion welding of aluminum (Al) to magnesium (Mg) results in the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) that significantly restrict the application of these joints in structural applications. In this study, cold spray, a promising solid-state coating deposition technology, was employed to introduce a nickel (Ni) interlayer to facilitate joining of Al to Mg sheets by means of resistance spot welding (RSW). The ability of cold spraying to deposit metallic powder on the substrate without melting proves beneficial in mitigating the formation of the Al-Mg IMCs. The Ni-coated coupons were subsequently welded via resistance spot welding at optimized parameters: 27 kA for 15 cycles in two pulses with a 5-cycle inter-pulse delay. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed metallurgical bonding between the Al, Mg, and Ni coatings in the fusion zone. It is shown that the bonding between the three elements inhibits the formation of deleterious IMCs. Tensile shear testing showed joint strength exceeding 4.2 kN, highlighting the potential of the proposed cold spray RSW approach for dissimilar joining in structural applications. Full article

This review investigates how process parameters and material choices influence the mechanical performance of parts produced by material extrusion additive manufacturing, with a particular focus on Material Extrusion (ME). Through a systematic bibliometric analysis of literature between 2015 and 2025, the study identifies key factors affecting mechanical strength, anisotropy, and structural reliability, including printing temperature, speed, orientation, layer thickness, and interlayer bonding. Emphasis is placed on emerging techniques such as 4D printing, fiber-reinforced composites, and novel monitoring methods like real-time vibration sensing and thermal imaging, which offer promising pathways to improve part performance and process stability. Three research questions guide the analysis: (1) how printing parameters affect micro- to macrostructure and failure behavior, (2) how optimization strategies enhance part quality, and (3) how material and process selection aligns with functional requirements. The review highlights both advances and persistent limitations in process control, material compatibility, and anisotropic strength. It concludes with a call for further integration of predictive modeling, hybrid material systems, and closed-loop process monitoring to unlock the full potential of additive manufacturing in high-performance engineering applications. Tungsten disulfide (WS2), a two-dimensional layered material with favorable electronic properties, has been explored as a promising negative electrode material for calcium-ion batteries (CIBs). Despite its use in monovalent systems, its performance in divalent Ca2+ intercalation remains poorly understood. Herein, a combined theoretical and experimental framework is used to elucidate the electronic mechanisms underlying Ca2+ intercalation. Theoretical insights were obtained through density functional theory calculations, incorporating periodic simulations using the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package, and localized orbital-level analysis using the discrete variational Xα method. These approaches reveal that Ca2+ insertion induces significant interlayer expansion, lowers diffusion barriers, and narrows the bandgap compared to Li+. Orbital analysis revealed strengthened W–S bonding and diminished antibonding interactions, which may contribute to the improved structural resilience. Electrochemical tests validated these predictions; the CaWS2 electrode delivered an initial discharge capacity of 208 mAh·g−1 at 0.1C, with 61% retention after 50 cycles at 1C. The voltage profile exhibits a distinct plateau near 0.7 V, consistent with a two-phase-like intercalation mechanism, contrasting with the gradual slope observed for Li+. These findings suggest that Ca2+ intercalation facilitates both rapid ion transport and enhanced structural robustness. This study offers mechanistic insights into multivalent-ion storage and supports the design of high-performance CIB electrodes. Full article

The interlayer bonding strength between a cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) base and an asphalt surface layer significantly influences asphalt pavement performance. This study analyzes the calculation method for the interlayer bonding coefficient, investigates its impact on pavement structural response, and proposes a threshold value. Pavement mechanics software was first employed to analyze horizontal displacement at the CSM-asphalt interface, leading to a proposed method for calculating the bonding coefficient using initial stress and displacement derived from interlayer shear tests. Subsequently, the bonding coefficient was evaluated under three interface conditions: untreated, emulsified asphalt-treated, and SBS-modified hot asphalt-treated. Results reveal substantial inherent bonding strength even in untreated interfaces. SBS-modified hot asphalt increased bonding strength by 40–50% compared to untreated interfaces and by 15–20% relative to emulsified asphalt-treated interfaces. Analysis of varying bonding coefficients demonstrates that insufficient CSM-asphalt bonding readily induces asphalt layer fatigue cracking, with bonding strength exerting the dominant influence on fatigue life. Pavements with SBS-modified hot asphalt interlayers exhibited approximately 70% longer fatigue life than untreated interfaces and 30% longer than emulsified asphalt-treated interfaces. Crucially, an interlayer bonding coefficient exceeding 5000 MPa/cm is required for layers to be considered fully bonded. Full article

Multimaterial 3D printing is transforming the landscape of additive manufacturing, enabling the production of advanced, functional parts with tailored properties for sectors like automotive, aerospace, and engineering. However, achieving strong interlayer adhesion between different polymers remains a significant challenge, limiting the mechanical reliability. This study investigates adhesion properties of widely used materials—polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA), polylactic acid (PLA), and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG)—and enhances mechanical performance of structural joints through optimized interlayer bonding techniques. Using the Material Extrusion (MEX) method, tensile testing was employed to evaluate the mechanical strength of joints by co-depositing and bonding material layers during the printing process. The results demonstrate that specific material combinations and joint design strategies, particularly increasing the interfacial contact area and applying interlayer bonding pressure, significantly enhance tensile strength. For instance, the strength of PC/PTEG composite joints increased from 15.2 MPa (standard joint) to 29.9 MPa (interlayer bonding strategy), nearly doubling the bond strength. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of multimaterial joints and propose practical approaches for improving the durability and functionality of 3D-printed structures. This research lays the groundwork for advancing multimaterial additive manufacturing, with implications for high-performance applications in engineering, aerospace, and beyond. Full article

Three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) is an emerging additive manufacturing technology with increasing application potential in the construction industry, offering advantages such as reduced labor requirements, shortened construction time, and material efficiency. However, structural integrity remains a challenge, particularly due to weak interlayer bonding resulting from the layered manufacturing process. This study investigates the mechanical performance and anisotropy of 3D-printed mineral-based composites with respect to the time interval between successive layers. Specimens were printed with varying interlayer intervals (0, 25, and 50 min) and tested in different loading directions. Flexural, compressive, and tensile strengths (direct and splitting methods) were measured both parallel and perpendicular to the layer orientation. Results showed a clear degradation in mechanical properties with increasing interlayer time, particularly in the direction perpendicular to the layers. Flexural strength decreased by over 25% and direct tensile strength by up to 40% with a 25 min interval. Compressive strength also declined, though less dramatically. Compared to cast specimens, printed elements showed 3–4 times lower compressive strength, highlighting the significant impact of interlayer cohesion. This study confirms that both the time between layers and the loading direction strongly influence mechanical behavior, underlining the anisotropic nature of 3DCP elements and the need for process optimization to ensure structural reliability. TLP, TLPS, and nanoparticle sintering have the potential to achieve a high-temperature-resistant joint at a lower bonding temperature. However, a long bonding time, voids in the joint, powder oxidation, and organic solvent residues impede their application. A novel interlayer and other approaches have been proposed, such as preformed Sn-coated Cu foam (CF@Sn), a Cu-Sn nanocomposite interlayer, self-reducible Cu nanoparticle paste, bimodal-sized Cu nanoparticle pastes, organic-free nanoparticle films, and high-thermal-conductivity and low-CTE composite paste. To address the challenges of friction and wear in mechanical systems, two functionalized montmorillonite (MMT) nanolubricants were developed through mechanochemistry, namely 3-sulfotetradecyldimethyl betaine-modified MMT (BS-MMT) and coconut amide propyl betaine-modified MMT (CAB-MMT) lubricants. The modification significantly expanded MMT’s interlayer spacing, with CAB-MMT exhibiting superior delamination and dispersion stability due to its coconut fatty amide groups. Tribological tests demonstrated that 0.5% CAB-MMT reduced the friction coefficient by 71.4% (to 0.08) and wear scar diameter by 58.8%, while maintaining stable performance under high loads (392 N) and speeds (1450 rpm). The exceptional performance stems from a synergistic mechanism involving the physical adsorption of MMT nanosheets, chemical adhesion via Fe-N/C-N+ bonds, and dynamic repair by friction-induced oxides. This work presents an eco-friendly, high-performance water-based nano-lubricant with broad industrial application potential. Full article

With the rapid increase in traffic volume and the number of heavy-duty vehicles, the load on asphalt pavements has increased significantly. Especially on sections with long longitudinal slopes, the internal stress conditions of asphalt pavement have become even more complex. This study aims to investigate the thermal–mechanical coupling behavior of asphalt pavement structures on long longitudinal slopes under the combined influence of temperature fields and moving loads. A pavement temperature field model was developed based on the climatic conditions of Nanning (AAT: 21.8 °C; Tmax: 37 °C; Tmin: 3 °C; AAP: 1453.4 mm). In addition, a three-dimensional finite element model of asphalt pavement structures on long longitudinal slopes was established using finite element software. Variations in pavement mechanical responses were compared under different vehicle axle loads (100–200 kN), slope gradients (0–5%), braking coefficients (0–0.7), and asphalt mixture layer thicknesses (2–8 cm). The results indicate that the pavement structure exhibits a strong capacity for pressure attenuation, with the middle and lower surface layers showing more pronounced stress reduction—up to 40%—significantly greater than the 6.5% observed in the upper surface layer. As the axle load increases from 100 kN to 200 kN, the internal mechanical responses of the pavement show a linear relationship with load magnitude, with an average increase of approximately 29%. In addition, the internal shearing stress of the pavement is more sensitive to changes in slope and braking coefficient; when the slope increases from 0% to 5% and the braking coefficient increases from 0 to 0.7, the shear stress at the bottom of the upper surface layer increases by 12% and 268%, respectively. This study provides guidance for the design of asphalt pavements on long longitudinal slopes. In future designs, special attention should be given to enhancing the shear strength of the surface layer and improving the interlayer bonding performance. In particular, under conditions of steep slopes and frequent heavy vehicle traffic, the thickness and modulus of the upper surface asphalt mixture may be appropriately increased. Full article

To develop solutions to the frequency instability and failure of silicon micromechanical resonant accelerometers, the state characteristics of micromechanical resonant accelerometers are investigated under temperature and vibration stresses. Through theoretical analysis and finite element simulation, the following is found: the Young’s modulus of silicon varies with temperature, causing a resonance frequency shift of −1.364 Hz/°C; the residual stress of temperature change affects the resonance frequency shift of the microstructure, causing it to be 5.43 Hz/MPa (tensile stress) and −5.25 Hz/MPa (compressive stress); thermal expansion triggers the failure of the bonding wire, and, in the range of 10 °C to 150 °C, the peak stress of the electrode/lead bond area increases from 83.2/85.6 MPa to 1.08/1.28 GPa. The failure mode under vibration stress is resonance structure fracture and interlayer peeling. An isolation frame design is proposed for the sensitive part of the microstructure, which reduces the frequency effects by 34% (tensile stress) and 15% (compressive stress) under temperature-variable residual stresses and the maximum value of the structural root mean square stresses by 69.7% (X-direction), 63.6% (Y-direction), and 71.3% (Z-direction) under vibrational stresses. Photocuring, including photopolymerization and photocrosslinking, has emerged as a transformative manufacturing paradigm that enables the precise, rapid, and customizable fabrication of advanced battery components. This review first introduces the principles of photocuring and vat photopolymerization and their unique advantages of high process efficiency, non-contact fabrication, ambient-temperature processing, and robust interlayer bonding. It then systematically summarizes photocured battery components, involving electrolytes, membranes, anodes, and cathodes, highlighting their design strategies. This review examines the impact of photocured materials on the battery’s properties, such as its conductivity, lithium-ion transference number, and mechanical strength, while examining how vat-photopolymerization-derived 3D architectures optimize ion transport and electrode–electrolyte integration. Finally, it discusses current challenges and future directions for photocuring-based battery manufacturing, emphasizing the need for specialized energy storage resins and scalable processes to bridge lab-scale innovations with industrial applications.
