This study provides an in-depth structural analysis of UNESCO World Heritage Apulian trulli, considering the three-layer dry-stone structure of their characteristic conical roofs. An integrated approach involving laser scanning, ground-penetrating radar, endoscopic investigation, and laboratory materials testing is used to identify and characterize the multi-wythe masonry system. A detailed finite element model is created in ANSYS to analyze seismic performance on Italian building codes. The model is validated through ambient vibration testing using accelerometric measurements. The diagnostic survey identified a three-layer system including exterior stone wythe, interior wythe, and rubble core, with compressive strength of stone averaging 2.5 MPa and mortar strength of 0.8 MPa. The seismic assessment will allow the examination of displacement patterns and stress distribution under design load conditions (ag = 0.15 g). The structural analysis demonstrates adequate performance under design loading conditions, with maximum stress levels remaining within acceptable limits for historic masonry construction. The experimental validation confirmed the finite element model predictions, with good correlation between numerical and experimental frequencies. The improvement of the overall seismic performance with the multi-wythe configuration and the role of wall thickness and geometric proportions will be taken into account. The methodology aims to provide technical evidence supporting the continued use of vernacular buildings while contributing to scientifically informed conservation practices throughout the region. The linear rolling guide (LRG) is widely used in the computer numerical control machine tool industry and other industries. To accurately evaluate the performance of LRGs, a multi-parameter test bench was developed to measure motion accuracy, preload drag force (PDF), vibration, temperature rise, and fatigue life. The mechanical structure and measurement and control system of the test bench were designed based on established principles and methods. ANSYS 19.0 software was used for static analysis of the gantry, modal analysis of the upper bed, and simulation of the impact of loading block thickness on load distribution uniformity. At the same time, we used an impact hammer modal test to verify the correctness of the finite element analysis of the upper bed. The analysis results validated the structural design. To verify the test bench’s repeatability, comparative experiments were conducted with the Hilectro LGD35-type LRGs, focusing on motion accuracy, PDF, and fatigue life. The experimental results confirmed the test bench’s high repeatability and validated the derived equations for measuring motion accuracy. Full article

This study addresses the problems of poor dynamic stability, high vibration coupling, and inefficient energy use in large-farm manure handling machines. A profiling wheel-based multi-disciplinary approach is proposed in the study. With the rocker arm prototype, double-ball heads, and a hydraulic damping system, a parametric design is built that includes vibration and energy consumption. The simulation results in EDEM2022 and ANSYS2022 prove the structure viability and motion compensation capability, while NSGA-II optimizes the damping parameters (k1 = 380 kN/m, C = 1200 Ns/m). The results show a 14.7% σFc reduction, 14.3% αRMS decrease, resonance avoidance (14–18 Hz), Δx (horizontal offset of the frame) < 5 mm, 18% power loss to 12.5%, and 62% stability improvement. The new research includes constructing a dynamic model by combining the Hertz contact theory with the modal decoupling method, while interacting with an automatic algorithm of adaptive damping and a mechanical-hydraulic-control-oriented optimization platform. Future work could integrate lightweight materials and multi-machine collaboration for smarter, greener manure cleaning. Full article

Ground engaging tools (GETs) are critical consumable components on mining excavators, and their timely replacement is essential to prevent risks and excessive downtime. This paper presents a monitoring method utilising the modal properties—natural frequencies and mode shapes. The method is applied in a test case to show how the GETs on an excavator bucket could be monitored. Modal analysis and dynamic analysis are conducted with ANSYS to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The finite element analysis models are validated by experimental vibration experiments. The results demonstrate a strong correlation between changes in natural frequencies and the conditions of the teeth on the excavator bucket, when comparing the intact to the worn-out condition. In conclusion, the presented method offers a promising approach for real-time monitoring of the GETs on mining excavators and similar equipment. It will contribute to efficient maintenance interventions and enhancing operational efficiency and safety. Full article

Vibration control systems are extensively utilized in structures to enhance their resilience against earthquakes and wind forces. However, structures with significant damping exhibit atypical damping behaviors, which impose constraints on the effectiveness of traditional modal analysis methods for discerning modal responses and estimating properties. To surmount this challenge, a novel State-Space-Based Modal Decomposition approach is proposed in this study. The State-Space-Based Modal Decomposition technique adeptly extracts modal responses and identifies modal attributes from acquired data of highly damped structures. The approach accurately calculates damping ratios and natural frequencies by scrutinizing the power spectrum within the deconstructed modal response. The validity of this method is confirmed through a numerical simulation with a three-degree-of-freedom system equipped with oil dampers and experimentation of a structure outfitted with a tuned mass damper system. The findings underscore that the transfer function of the modal response in state-space encompasses both displacement and velocity transfer functions. The results demonstrate that precise estimation of modal parameters can be accomplished by suitably evaluating the participation ratio of the two response components. Full article

To address the problem of flow-induced resonance in the valve core assembly of a pilot-operated molten salt regulating valve in a concentrated solar thermal power generation molten salt energy storage system under high pressure differential and high flow rate conditions, the flow-induced vibration characteristics of the pilot-operated molten salt regulating valve were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid–structure interaction modal analysis. The vibration characteristics of the valve core assembly under the excitation force of the molten salt medium were analyzed using the harmonic response method, and the influence of different parameters on the valve core assembly’s vibration characteristics was studied. The results show that under typical operating openings, the first six modal frequencies of the valve core motion assembly are not close to the fluid excitation frequency, indicating that flow-induced resonance does not occur. The maximum vibration stress and displacement of the valve core assembly decrease with increasing damping ratio. With increasing pressure differential, the maximum stress and maximum amplitude of the valve core assembly increase. By changing the valve stem constraint conditions, the vibration stress of the valve core assembly can be reduced. This study provides a reference for the design of flow-induced vibration suppression for pilot-operated molten salt regulating valves and provides guidance for the safe operation of concentrated solar thermal power generation molten salt regulating valves under high pressure differential and high flow rate conditions. Passenger comfort in executive-class aircraft demands rigorous control of noise, vibration, and harshness. This study describes the development of a detailed, high-fidelity coupled structural–acoustic finite element model of the Piaggio P.180 passenger cabin, aimed at accurately predicting interior cabin noise within the low- to mid-frequency range. A hybrid discretization strategy was employed to balance computational efficiency and model fidelity. The fuselage structure was discretized using two-dimensional shell elements and one-dimensional beam elements, while the interior cabin air volume was represented using three-dimensional fluid elements. Mesh sizing in both the structural and acoustic domains were determined through analytical wavelength estimates and numerical convergence studies, ensuring appropriate resolution and accuracy. The model’s reliability and accuracy were validated through comprehensive modal analysis. The first three structural modes exhibited strong correlation with available experimental data, confirming the robustness of the numerical model. Subsequent harmonic response analyses were conducted to evaluate the intrinsic noise reduction characteristics of the P.180 airframe, specifically within the frequency range up to approximately 300 Hz. To study the vibration characteristics of viscoelastic slurry pipe structures under fluid–structure interaction (FSI), we constructed a three-dimensional FSI pipe model based on the finite element method to systematically investigate the effects of fluid effects, pipe length, and wall thickness on the vibrational characteristics of viscoelastic slurry pipes. A modal analysis demonstrated that fluid effects not only significantly reduced the natural frequency of the pipe but also disrupted the symmetry of the vibration modes and eliminated the phenomenon of frequency degeneracy. The frequency reduction caused by FSI reached 54%, which was dominant compared with the water-attached effects, and its impact intensified with the increasing vibration order. The water-attached effect exhibited differences between odd and even orders, attributed to the influence of vibration modes on the distribution of fluid inertial forces, with a contribution of 45.07% to 55.24% in the odd orders and of only 37.69% to 38.93% in the even orders. When the FSI and water-attached effects acted together, the frequency reduction was further aggravated, but the reduction ratio did not follow a simple linear superposition. The parametric analysis of the pipe showed that when the pipe length increased from 1 m to 3 m, the growth rate of its natural frequency was only 26.52% that of the shorter pipe, indicating that the longer the pipes, the slower the growth rate of frequency. When the wall thickness increased from 5 mm to 11 mm, the growth rate of the first-order natural frequency decreased from 15.43% to 7.44%, suggesting that the frequency improvement effect caused by the stiffness augmentation diminished with the increase in wall thickness. The research results hold significant guiding significance for the structural design of slurry pipe systems in practical engineering and the safe operation of pipe systems. Full article

The present work investigates the influence of natural rubber (NR) on the mechanical properties and free vibration characteristics of elastomer-embedded NR-filled GFRP laminates for anti-vibration (AV) mounts. The tensile, flexural, and impact strength values of the preferred hybrid laminates are evaluated as per ASTM standards. To estimate vibration characteristics such as the modal frequency and damping of the hybrid laminates, a free vibration study is carried out under the fixed-free boundary condition. Based on the experimental results, the effect of NR filling in an epoxy matrix of elastomer-centric GFRP laminates is thoroughly investigated for its application in AV mounts. Full article

The application of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) to high-rise buildings or slender bridges can significantly decrease the dynamical vibrations due to external excitation, such as wind or earthquake loads. However, the individual properties of a TMD such as mass, stiffness and damping have to be designed carefully with respect to the dynamical properties of the investigated structure. In real-world structures, the influence of uncertain system properties might be critical for the performance of a TMD and thus the whole structure. Therefore, the design under uncertainty of such systems is an important issue, which is addressed in the current paper. For our investigations, we consider linear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, where analytical formulas for the deterministic design already exist, and linear multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems, where a time integration and numerical optimization algorithms are usually applied to obtain the optimal TMD parameters. If the numerical optimization should be coupled with a sampling-based uncertainty quantification method, such as Monte Carlo sampling, the design procedure would require the evaluation of a coupled double-loop approach, which is very demanding from the computation point of view. Therefore, we focus the following paper on an efficient analytical uncertainty quantification approach, which estimates the mean and scatter from a Taylor series expansion. Additionally, we introduce an efficient mode decomposition approach for MDOF systems with multiple TMDs, which estimates the maximum displacements using a modal analysis instead of a demanding time integration. Different optimal design problems are formulated as single- or multi-objective optimization tasks, where the statistical properties of the maximum displacements are considered as safety margins in the optimization goal functions. The application of numerical optimization algorithms is straightforward and not limited to specific algorithms. As numerical examples, we investigate an SDOF system with single TMD and a multi-story frame with multiple TMDs. The presented procedure might be interesting for the design process of structures, where the dynamical vibrations reach a critical threshold. Full article

This study explores the free vibration behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced sandwich open circular cylindrical shells featuring 3D reentrant auxetic cores (3D RSOCCSs). For theoretical predictions, a model integrating the Rayleigh–Ritz method (RRM) and Reddy’s third-order shear deformation theory (TOSDT) is adopted, whereas the finite element analysis approach is used for simulation predictions. All-composite 3D RSOCCSs specimens are produced via hot-press molding and interlocking assembly, and the modal characteristics of 3D RSOCCSs are obtained through hammer excitation modal tests. The predicted modal properties are in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, the influences of fiber ply angles and geometric parameters on the natural frequency in the free vibration are thoroughly analyzed, which can offer insights for the vibration analysis of lightweight auxetic metamaterial cylindrical shells and promote their practical use in engineering scenarios focused on vibration mitigation. The exhaust duct of aero-engine exhibits complex vibration response characteristics under the influence of temperature fields and vibration loads. Taking the non-axisymmetric exhaust duct of turboshaft engine as the object of study, a finite element model of the exhaust duct was established using three-dimensional finite element analysis methods to analyze the thermal modal and random vibration response characteristics under axial loading for large thin-walled non-axisymmetric exhaust ducts. The simulation analysis method was validated through thermal vibration experiments on the scaled model. In a thermal environment, the shape of the power spectral density curves for displacement and stress of the exhaust duct remains largely unchanged in the low-frequency range; however, the response frequencies exhibit a significant forward shift. When subjected to Y-axial loading, the amplitude of the X- and Z-direction displacement response at 1st order (12.96 Hz) and the stress response at 6th order (30.92 Hz) significantly increase. Random vibration loads excite multiple modes of the exhaust duct, with lower-order modes being more easily stimulated. When subjected to X- and Z-axial loading, 1st order (12.96 Hz) has the greatest impact on the X- and Z-direction displacement responses, while 2nd order (16.93 Hz) and 13th order (82.79 Hz) frequencies have the greatest impact on the displacement response in the Y-direction and equivalent stress response. When subjected to Y-axial loading, the 5th order (22.35 Hz) and 12th order (81.69 Hz) modes have the most significant effects on the displacement responses in the X, Y, and Z directions and equivalent stress responses. Attention to these orders is essential during the design process, along with implementing certain stiffness reinforcement measures to reduce response amplitudes. Full article

This study presents an advanced simulation-based methodology for evaluating the dynamic vibrational behavior of the operator–vehicle assembly in autonomous electric agricultural tractors. Using the TE-0 electric tractor as the experimental platform, the research is structured into three integrated stages. In the first stage, a seated anthropometric virtual model of the human operator is developed based on experimental data and biomechanical validation. The second stage involves a detailed modal analysis of the TE-0 electric tractor using Altair Sim Solid, with the objective of determining the natural frequencies and vibration modes in the [0–80] Hz range, in compliance with ISO 2631-1. This analysis captures both the structural-induced frequencies—associated with the chassis, wheelbase, and metallic frame—and the operational-induced frequencies, influenced by the velocity and terrain profile. Subsequently, the modal analysis of the “Grammer Cabin Seat” is conducted to assess its dynamic response and identify critical vibration modes, highlighting how the seat behaves under vibrational stimuli from the tractor and terrain. The third stage extends the analysis to the virtual operator model seated on the tractor seat, investigating the biomechanical response of the human body and the operator–seat–vehicle interaction during simulated motion. Simulations were carried out using SolidWorks 2023 and Altair Sim Solid over a frequency range of [0–80] Hz, corresponding to operation on unprocessed soil covered with grass, at a constant forward speed of 7 km/h. The results reveal critical resonance modes and vibration transmission paths that may impact operator health, comfort, and system performance. The research contributes to the development of safer, more ergonomic, and sustainable autonomous agricultural transport systems. This article focuses on the study of elastic beams with fractional-order inertial damping structures at both ends, with the aim of exploring their dynamic characteristics, damping effects, and parameter selection rules in depth, providing theoretical and practical support for engineering applications. Firstly, using the generalized Hamilton principle, two dynamic models of an elastic beam are established for two different boundary conditions. Next, using the complex modal analysis method, a design method for the critical damping of the first and second modes of an elastic beam was proposed for the first time, and the accuracy of the critical damping calculation formula was verified. Simulation analysis shows that the higher the derivative order and inertance, the lower the main resonance frequency, and the greater the critical damping. Then, using the main resonance amplitude and frequency attenuation rate (RA and RΩ) as indicators, an analysis was conducted on the impact of damper parameters on vibration suppression effects. The results indicate that the introduction of fractional-order inerter can reduce the main resonance amplitude and frequency, and critical damping plays a significant role in the vibration suppression process. Based on the optimal average RA range (95–98%) and higher cost-effectiveness, selecting a damping value of 0.05~0.6 times the critical damping ensures better overall vibration suppression performance, providing an important reference for the vibration suppression design of elastic beams in practical engineering. The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) dynamics of commercial-scale deep-sea mining risers with complex component arrangements (pumps, buffer stations, buoyancy modules) remain insufficiently explored, especially for 6000 m systems with nonlinear tension. This study investigates VIV control strategy by adjusting tension for a nonlinear riser system using the Iwan-Blevins wake oscillator model integrated with Morison equation-based analysis. An analytical model incorporating four typical current profiles was established to quantify the dynamic response under different flow velocities, internal flow density, and structural parameters. Increased buffer station mass effectively suppressed drift distance (over 35% reduction under specific conditions) by regulating axial tension. Dynamic comparisons demonstrated distinct VIV energy distribution patterns under different current conditions. Spectral analysis revealed that the vibration follows Strouhal vortex shedding lock-in principles. Spatial modal differentiation was observed due to nonlinear variations in velocity profiles, pipe diameters, and axial tension, accompanied by multi-frequency resonance, coexistence of standing and traveling waves, and broadband resonance with amplitude surges under critical velocities (1.75 m/s in Current-B). This study proposes to control the VIV amplitude by adjusting internal flow density and buffer mass, which is proved effective for reducing vibrations in upper (0–2000 m) risers. It validates vibration amplitude and frequency control through current velocity, buffer mass and slurry density regulation in a nonlinear riser system. Full article
