Rapid urbanization in China has intensified spatial and social disparities between urban and rural areas, posing major challenges to sustainable rural development. Traditional top-down rural construction and evaluation models often neglect villagers’ everyday practices, resulting in mismatches between spatial planning and actual use. This study develops a cross-scale, bottom-up framework for assessing rural construction through social network analysis (SNA), taking Xiongfan Village in Dawu County, Hubei Province, as a case study. At the village scale, the comparison between the “Public Space Structure Network” and the “Villagers’ Space Usage Behavior Network” reveals a significant mismatch between spatial compactness and behavioral dispersion, with high-frequency activities concentrated along the north–south axis while peripheral and east–west spaces remain underutilized. At the township scale, GPS-based analysis shows that the revitalization of Xiongfan transformed it from a peripheral node into a central hub, restructuring the network into a new pattern of “characteristic towns—traditional villages—ecological scenic areas.” These findings highlight the dual role of rural construction in both meeting residents’ daily needs and fostering regional integration. The proposed cross-scale SNA framework not only advances methodological tools for evaluating rural construction but also provides practical guidance for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban–rural development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The social-ecological resilience of rural settlements refers to their ability to resist and mitigate the risks posed by internal and external disturbances, and to utilize the external environment to achieve a new equilibrium state. Amid rapid urbanization, it is of great significance for mountainous settlements to improve their risk resistance and development ability. Taking Dong’an Town in Chengkou County, located in the eastern part of Qinling–Bashan Mountains in southwestern China, as the research object, this study constructs an evaluation index system for rural residential resilience based on social-ecological resilience theory. It explores the resilience level of rural residences in mountainous areas from the dimensions of internal resilience and external environmental resilience and scientifically proposes an optimization path for the spatial layout of rural residences. This study provides a reference for optimizing the rural living environment, promoting spatial equity, and improving people’s livelihood according to local conditions. The results showed that: (1) The overall level of security resilience of rural settlements in Dong’an Town was relatively high, with 221 patches above the security level, accounting for 19.53% of the total area of the town. (2) The rural residents in Dong’an Town can be categorized into three types: core structure optimization, peripheral system upgrading, and relocation and withdrawal. Different types of rural settlements adapt to internal and external resource conditions and select optimal spatial layout paths according to local conditions. Full article

This study investigates the application and transformation potential of smart city concepts along Zhongyang Road in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. By introducing evaluation mechanisms such as the Smart City Maturity Index (SCMI) and the Composite Key Performance Indicator (CKPI), the research systematically analyzes the effectiveness of implementations across areas including transportation, energy, governance, and citizen engagement. Furthermore, Formula (1) is applied to assess the improvement in average delay time after the integration of smart technologies, while Formula (2) quantifies the annual energy savings achieved by replacing conventional streetlights with solar-powered ones, demonstrating tangible energy-saving and carbon-reduction benefits. The findings indicate that cross-sector collaboration and technological integration can significantly enhance urban operational efficiency and sustainability, providing valuable insights for the development of other new towns. Thermal algae are extremophilic organisms that live in one of the harshest environments in the world and thrive in waters with temperatures of up to 90 °C. They have gained attention due to their special ecological adaptations, their great biotechnological potential and their recently recognised role in combating global climate change and achieving sustainable development. However, the biodiversity of these algae is far from being fully explored. The article presents the first finding of the prokaryotic genus Asterocapsa (Chroococcales, Cyanophyceae, Cyanoprokaryota/Cyanobacteria) in thermal waters and describes a new species from the fountain basins in the thermal system of the only continental European geyser (101 °C) in the town of Sapareva Banya (south-west Bulgaria). This species is not only one of the few aquatic representatives of this generally aeroterrestrial genus, but is also characterised by its extremophilic lifestyle and differs clearly from the type species and other aquatic species of the genus due to its morphological characteristics. These include the smaller dimensions of the cells and colonies, as well as the colourless, transparent, but always lamellar and regularly verrucous mucilage envelopes. The unique locality of this alga is highly endangered and was included in the first Red List of Bulgarian wetlands. Due to human activities and changes in the geyser system, we have detected some unfavourable changes in the algal habitat and therefore propose to add the newly described species to the Red List of Bulgarian Microalgae with the status Critically Endangered. This article examines the initial physical models of new towns. Its aim is to identify physical models for new towns that articulate Western planning concepts, to understand the transformations in the models and their causes and trace their development and future trajectory. Israel’s new towns have been selected as a case study for two main reasons: Israel continues to plan and construct new towns, and in doing so, draws on Western planning models and values. An examination of these models, and their transformations over time reveals that since the 1960s, two key motifs can be discerned: the grid model and the linear model. The study found that similar models may in fact reflect contradictory approaches to communality and individualism, coercion and free choice, although the general trend is one of transition from communality toward individualism. It was also found that the more rigid the plan—and thus perceived by planners as “more correct”—the more it fails, as the future is inherently unpredictable. Based on an analysis of these plans and the gaps between them and the facts on the ground, the article concludes by providing physical recommendations for the planning of new towns. Full article

With the advancement of refined urban governance and the construction of high-quality public spaces, street furniture design and usage face multiple challenges, including insufficient public participation and a neglect of actual user experience. These issues highlight the urgent need to establish a scientifically grounded user evaluation framework to inform design practices. This study focuses on Yangzhou Ecological Science and Technology New Town and, drawing on field investigation, grounded theory, and the Delphi method, develops a street furniture design evaluation framework encompassing three core dimensions: planning and configuration, environmental coordination, and operational management. Building on this framework, the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation method are employed to conduct a holistic assessment of the street furniture and to identify critical design deficiencies. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework effectively identifies the strengths and weaknesses of street furniture and provides robust support for formulating targeted optimization strategies. The results reveal significant variations in the perceived importance of design factors among different user groups. Residents primarily emphasize practicality and convenience in daily use. Tourists value aesthetic expression and cultural resonance, whereas government officials focus on construction standardization and maintenance efficiency. In terms of satisfaction, all three groups reported relatively low scores, with the ranking as follows: “planning and configuration” > “management and operations” > “environmental coordination.” Based on these findings, the study proposes targeted design guidelines for future practice. The evaluation framework has been adopted by local authorities, incorporated into official street furniture design guidelines, and implemented in pilot projects—demonstrating its practical applicability and value. This research contributes to the theoretical advancement of street furniture design and provides empirical and methodological support for applications in other emerging urban areas and new town developments. The vulnerability of older adults in rural mountainous regions presents a critical challenge for sustainable development, particularly in the context of smart city and digital town construction. In this study, we develop a comprehensive analytical framework and evaluation index to assess Vulnerability to Elderly Poverty (VEP) and adaptive capacity, with a focus on its integration with smart infrastructure and age-friendly rural built environment strategies. Using Shizhu County in Chongqing, China, as a case study, we explore spatial disparities in VEP and apply quantile regression to identify the driving factors of adaptability. Our findings indicate that subsidy-dependent, middle-aged, and empty-nest older adults are the most vulnerable groups, with limited capacity to adapt to changing environments. A geographically alternating “high–low–high–low” VEP pattern reflects uneven development in infrastructure, accessibility, and public service construction. These disparities highlight the need for targeted planning and building interventions in rural settings. The key factors influencing adaptability include individual attributes, intergenerational support, and macro-level conditions such as policy design and digital infrastructure deployment. The integration of aging-friendly building strategies, smart infrastructure, and digital tools significantly enhances older adults’ resilience and social inclusion. Based on our results, we propose four adaptation models for aging populations in rural areas, emphasizing the construction of inclusive digital infrastructure, aging-sensitive building design, and community-based support systems. Strategic recommendations include promoting digital literacy through built environment interventions, enhancing intergenerational living arrangements, and embedding elderly-responsive features into smart construction planning. This research offers new insights into construction management practices that support aging in place and poverty alleviation through inclusive and resilient built environments. Full article

Since the end of the Civil War, Cambodia has pursued economic development to enhance livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, where land is a critical resource. Previous studies have indicated that the country has changed land use and land cover. However, they have not explained how these changes can improve the livelihoods of local communities, thereby mitigating their negative impacts through an asset-based approach. Battambang Province, in the northwestern region, was the battleground until political integration in 1996. Since then, the province has been home to immigrants exploring the lands for livelihood. Thus, this study aims to examine agricultural livelihoods in the villages of Dei Kraham and Ou Toek Thla, located west of Battambang Town. These were selected because of their common characteristics. Adopting a quantitative approach and a sustainable livelihood framework, this study employed stratified random sampling to select 123 families for interviews across three population subgroups: old settlers, new settlers, and young settlers. In situ information was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis tests to assess the livelihood assets underlying the physical, natural, human, financial, and social capital. The statistical analysis results reveal no significant differences (p-value = 0.079) in livelihood assets between the strata at the village level. Meanwhile, significant differences were observed in physical, human, and financial capital between old and young settlers when examining the subgroups (p-value 0.000). The extent of the land resources held by old settlers was associated with household income and livelihoods related to agriculture. Based on livelihood asset scores, nearly half of the new settlers (0.49–0.5) and a quarter of the young settlers (0.47) are vulnerable groups requiring support. The youth will soon face an uncertain future if they do not prioritize education. Full article

Historic districts of ancient towns serve as significant carriers of historical and cultural heritage while also being popular tourist destinations. Within the context of urbanization and organic renewal, the protection and development of historic districts have become crucial research topics. This study collects literature from the Web of Science database and applies manual screening to ensure relevance to the research theme. Using CiteSpace as an analytical tool, the study conducts a visual analysis from multiple perspectives, including keywords, writing time, authors, centrality, keyword clustering analysis, and timeline visualization. By constructing a knowledge graph, this research explores the key pathways and knowledge nodes in the organic renewal of spatial environments in historic districts of ancient towns. Based on literature clustering, the study categorizes research into four major aspects: heritage conservation, cultural and tourism development, spatial planning and design, and environmental enhancement. Based on this, universal strategies for the cultural and tourism development of historic districts in ancient towns are proposed. The research focus shifts from emphasizing cultural heritage preservation to the integrated development of culture and tourism. In the spatial development of historic districts, everyday life scenes should be incorporated while new technologies should be utilized to enhance environmental comfort. This paper summarizes the current research frontiers in this field and proposes future research trends, providing valuable references for scholars in related areas. Full article

This study investigates the complex dynamics of new-type urbanization in resource-based county-level cities, using Wuan City in Hebei Province, China, as a representative case. As China pursues a high-quality development agenda, cities historically dependent on resource extraction face profound challenges in achieving sustainable and inclusive urban growth. This research employs a multi-method approach—including Theil index analysis, industrial shift-share analysis, a Cobb–Douglas production function model, and a composite urbanization index—to quantitatively diagnose the constraints on Wuan’s development and assess its transformation efforts. Our empirical results reveal a multifaceted situation: while the urban–rural income gap has narrowed, rural income streams remain fragile. The shift-share analysis indicates that although Wuan’s traditional industries have regained competitiveness, the city’s economic structure is still burdened by a persistent negative structural component, hindering diversification. Furthermore, the economy exhibits characteristics of a labor-intensive growth model with inefficient capital deployment. These underlying issues are reflected in a comprehensive urbanization index that, after a period of rapid growth, has recently stagnated, signaling the exhaustion of the city’s traditional development mode. In response, Wuan attempts an “industrial transformation-driven new-type urbanization” path. This study details the three core strategies being implemented: (1) incremental population urbanization through development at the urban fringe and in industrial zones; (2) in situ urbanization of the existing rural population; and (3) the cultivation of specialized “characteristic small towns” to create new, diversified economic nodes. The findings from Wuan offer critical, actionable lessons for other resource-dependent regions. The case demonstrates that successful urban transformation requires not only industrial upgrading but also integrated, spatially aware planning and robust institutional support. We conclude that while Wuan’s model provides a valuable reference, its strategies must be adapted to local contexts, emphasizing the universal importance of institutional innovation, human capital investment, and a people-centered approach to achieving resilient and high-quality urbanization. Urban public transport represents a fundamental pillar of a sustainable transport system and a key subsystem within the broader mobility framework in urban environments. This paper focuses on the analysis and optimization of the public transport system in the city of Prievidza and the nearby town of Bojnice in Slovakia, which currently face challenges such as low system attractiveness, operational inefficiency, and weak integration with regional railway transport. This study presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of existing public transport services in Prievidza and Bojnice, including an assessment of passenger flows, line network structure, transfer connections, and operational parameters. Based on the identified deficiencies, a new urban public transport network system is proposed, emphasizing direct links to the railway network. This methodology is developed in the context of an integrated timed-transfer timetable, with defined system time slots at the main transfer hub and a newly designed line network with standardized paths and regular intervals. The proposed system ensures significantly improved connectivity between urban transport and rail services, reduces deadhead kilometres, lowers the number of required vehicles, and leads to a reduction in operational costs by up to 20%. The resulting model serves as a transferable example of efficient service planning in medium-sized cities, with a focus on functional integration, operational efficiency, and sustainable urban development. Since the early years of the 21st century, there has been a clear critique of the diotic way of farming in the international scientific arena, emphasizing that the existing models of economic development are exacerbating social inequalities and overexploiting natural resources. At the same time, the literature promotes the implementation of a new way of farming that takes into account environmental, social, and economic concerns. We have brought together new methods and ways of farming in these areas into one broad concept, called the conclusion of sustainable development. Within this concept, particular emphasis has been placed on sustainable energy development, the intensive development of technologies based on renewable energy sources, and the advancement of end-user awareness of modern technologies. The aim of this paper was to identify the factors that determine the ecological attitude of users of single-family houses in Poland when making strategic energy decisions related to the choice of heating devices in a household. To solve this research problem, the authors conducted a nationwide survey on a representative sample of single-family house users. In turn, the results were analyzed using log-linear analysis. The results showed that the determinants of the ecological nature of such energy decisions are primarily the age of the house users and their level of education. It was found that younger people are significantly more likely to think about ecology when making decisions related to how a building is heated than older people. In addition, people with a higher level of education are more likely to think about ecology when making such decisions than those with a lower level of education. Findings showed that the gender of the occupant of a single-family house, as well as the size of the town in which the building is located, have no significant impact on the ecological nature of decisions related to the choice of the method of obtaining energy for home heating. It was also shown that territorial variation, i.e., the region of the country, had no effect on this issue. The identification of socio-demographic determinants of the ecological nature of decisions related to the choice of heating devices in single-family houses in Poland fills the research gap and thus contributes to the literature in this area. Alcalá de Ebro is located 35 km northwest of the city of Zaragoza, on the right bank of the Ebro River at the outlet of a ravine (Juan Gastón) towards the river, with a catchment area of more than 230 km2. Over time, urbanisation and agricultural development have eliminated the last stretch of the drainage channel, and these water inputs have been channelled underground, filtering through the ground. This section of the Ebro Valley rests on a marly tertiary substratum, which promotes dissolution-subbing processes that can lead to sinkholes. The ground tends to sink gradually or suddenly collapse. Many studies have been carried out to understand not only the origin of the phenomenon but also its geometry and the area affected by it in the town of Alcalá de Ebro. In this sense, it has been possible to model an area around the main access road, where numerous collapsing sinkholes have been found, blocking the road and affecting houses. It also affects the embankment that protects the town from the floods of the river Ebro. These studies have provided specific knowledge, enabling us to evaluate and implement underground consolidation measures, which have shown apparent success. Several injection campaigns have been carried out, initially with expansion resins and finally with columnar development, using special low-mobility mortars to fill and consolidate the undermined areas and prevent new subsidence. These technical solutions propose a method of ground treatment that we believe is novel for this type of geological process. The results have been satisfactory, but it is considered necessary to continue monitoring the situation and to extend attention to a wider area to prevent, as far as possible, new problems of subsidence and collapse. In this sense, the objective is to continue the control and monitoring of possible phenomena related to subsidence problems in the affected area and its immediate surroundings, to detect and, if necessary, anticipate subsidence or collapse phenomena that could affect the body of the embankment. This paper examines two large urban projects within a defined theoretical and methodological framework. Firstly, we analyse how the city administration in Belgrade, in post-socialist Serbia, managed the initial steps of the transformation of a part of the old town into the new large-scale development, the Belgrade Waterfront (BW), on the right bank of the Sava River. The contested outcome of the land transformation process contributes to a recognition of the unethical decision-making and performance of the responsible city authorities. Secondly, the postwar planning and construction of New Belgrade, in particular its Central Zone, is critically examined from the aspect of radical urban landscape transformation and its impact on society. Through a critical examination of the spatial development of the socialist period, we aim to identify emancipatory architectural and urban practises that could be an alternative to contemporary spatial production and that might provide a notion of key strategies for (re)establishing corresponding forms of socio-spatial justice. The two aforementioned research subjects are examined using different research questions, methodological tools, and different theoretical frameworks, which overlap, merge, and combine in the part of the study where the obtained results are discussed. Since the reform and opening-up policy, the accelerated urbanization rate has triggered extensive construction of new towns, leading to architectural homogenization and environmental quality degradation. As urban development transitions toward a “quality improvement” paradigm, there is an urgent need to synergistically enhance the health performance of human settlements through the optimization of public space environments. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of the built environment of urban streets on residents’ perceptions. In particular, in the context of rapid urbanization, how to improve the mental health and quality of life of residents by improving the street environment. Changbai Island Street in the Heping District of Shenyang City was selected for the study. Baidu Street View images combined with machine learning were employed to quantify physical characterizations like street plants and buildings. The ‘Place Pulse 2.0’ dataset was utilized to obtain data on residents’ perceptions of streets as beautiful, safe, boring, and lively. Correlation and regression analyses were used to reveal the relationship between physical characteristics such as green visual index, openness, and pedestrians. It was discovered that the green visual index had a positive effect on perceptions of it being beautiful and safe, while openness and building enclosure factors influenced perceptions of it being lively or boring. This study provides empirical data support for urban planning, emphasizing the need to focus on integrating environmental greenery, a sense of spatial enclosure, and traffic mobility in street design. Optimization strategies such as increasing green coverage, controlling building density, optimizing pedestrian space, and enhancing the sense of street enclosure were proposed. The results of the study not only help to understand the relationship between the built environment of streets and residents’ perceptions but also provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for urban space design.
