The paper presents an innovative theoretical concept of a bio-inspired soft gripper system with two parallel jaws, a fixed and a mobile one. It is conceived for gripping fragile or soft objects with complex, irregular shapes that are easily deformable. This novel gripper is designed for handling small objects of masses up to 0.5 kg. The maximum gripping stroke of the mobile jaw is 13.5 mm. The driving motor is a pneumatic muscle, an actuator with inherently compliant, spring-like behavior. Compliance is the feature responsible for the soft character of the gripper system, ensuring its passive adaptability to the nature of the object to be gripped. The paper presents the structural, kinematic, static, and dynamic models of the novel gripper system and describes the compliant behavior of the entire assembly. The results of the dynamic simulation of the gripper have confirmed the attaining of the imposed motion-related performance. Full article

Thermal bridging through cold-formed steel (CFS) studs significantly reduces the thermal performance of light gauge steel frame (LSF) wall systems, particularly in climates demanding higher thermal resistance (R-value). While thermal breaks are commonly used, they increase material costs and construction complexity. According to NCC 2022, the minimum total R-value requirement for external walls ranges between 2.8 and 3.8 m2·K/W depending on the climate zone and building class. This study therefore evaluated web-perforated steel studs as a passive strategy to enhance thermal resistance of LSF walls, analysing 120 configurations with validated 3D finite element models in Abaqus and benchmarking in THERM. The results showed that web perforations consistently improved R-values by 14 to 20%, as isotherm contours and heat flux vectors demonstrated disruption of direct heat flow through the stud, thereby mitigating thermal bridging. Although the axial compression capacity of web-perforated CFS studs decreased by 29.5%, the use of 4 mm hole-edge stiffeners restored 96.8% of the original capacity. The modified NZS 4214:2006 and ASHRAE Modified Zone methods, incorporating steel area reduction and heat flux redistribution, closely matched Abaqus predictions, with coefficients of variation (COV) below 0.009, corresponding to less than 1% relative deviation between analytical and numerical R-values. Furthermore, application of web-perforated CFS studs in five external wall systems demonstrated improved thermal resistance, ensuring compliance with NCC 2022 R-value requirements across all Australian climate zones. Overall, the findings establish web-perforated studs as an effective solution for improving the energy performance of LSF building envelopes. Full article

Modern ophthalmic imaging methods such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) typically require expensive scanner components to direct the light beam across the retina while the patient’s gaze remains fixed. This proof-of-concept experiment investigates whether the patient’s natural eye movements can replace mechanical scanning by guiding the gaze along predefined patterns. An infrared fundus camera setup was used with nine healthy adults (aged 20–57) who completed tasks comparing passive viewing of moving patterns to actively tracing them by drawing using a touchpad interface. The active task involved participant-controlled target movement with real-time color feedback for accurate pattern tracing. Results showed that active tracing significantly increased pupil diameter by an average of 17.8% (range 8.9–43.6%; p < 0.001) and reduced blink frequency compared to passive viewing. More complex patterns led to greater pupil dilation, confirming the link between cognitive load and physiological response. These findings demonstrate that patient driven gaze guidance can stabilize gaze, reduce blinking, and naturally dilate the pupil. These conditions might enhance the quality of scannerless OCT or other imaging techniques benefiting from guided gaze and larger pupils. There could be benefits for children and people with compliance issues, although further research is needed to consider cognitive load. Full article

Mechanical ventilation is indispensable for patients with severe respiratory conditions, and high-fidelity lung simulators play a pivotal role in ventilator testing, clinical training, and respiratory research. However, most existing simulators are passive, single-lung models with limited and discrete control over respiratory mechanics, which constrains their ability to reproduce realistic breathing dynamics. To overcome these limitations, this study presents a dual-chamber lung simulator that can operate in both active and passive modes. The system integrates a sliding mode controller enhanced by a linear extended state observer, enabling the accurate replication of complex respiratory patterns. In active mode, the simulator allows for the precise tuning of respiratory muscle force profiles, lung compliance, and airway resistance to generate physiologically accurate flow and pressure waveforms. Notably, it can effectively simulate pathological conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by adjusting key parameters to mimic the characteristic respiratory mechanics of these disorders. Experimental results show that the absolute flow error remains within ±3 L/min, and the response time is under 200 ms, ensuring rapid and reliable performance. In passive mode, the simulator emulates ventilator-dependent conditions, providing continuous adjustability of lung compliance from 30 to 100 mL/cmH2O and airway resistance from 2.01 to 14.67cmH2O/(L/s), with compliance deviations limited to ±5%. This design facilitates fine, continuous modulation of key respiratory parameters, making the system well-suited for evaluating ventilator performance, conducting human–machine interaction studies, and simulating pathological respiratory states. This study conducts a simulation-based assessment of a recently commissioned office building in the Republic of Korea, representing a typical public office facility. The building was modeled using EnergyPlus 23.1.0 after construction, although no validation was performed due to the absence of metered consumption data. Previous approaches relying on simplified methods such as the Radiant Time Series (RTS), which neglect dynamic building behavior, have often led to overestimated cooling and heating loads. This has emerged as a major obstacle in designing energy-efficient buildings within the context of compact and smart cities pursuing carbon neutrality. Consequently, the trend in building performance analysis is shifting toward dynamic simulations and digital twin-based design methodologies. Furthermore, electrification of buildings without adequate thermal load assessment may also contribute to overdesign, irrespective of urban environmental characteristics. From an urban planning standpoint, there is a growing need for performance criteria that reflect occupant behavior and actual usage patterns. However, dynamics-based building studies remain scarce in the Republic of Korea. In this context, the present study demonstrates that passive design strategies, implemented through systematic changes in envelope materials, HVAC operational standards, and compliance with ASHRAE 90.1 criteria, can significantly enhance thermal comfort and indoor air quality. The simulation results show that energy consumption can be reduced by over 36.21% without compromising occupant health or comfort. These findings underscore the importance of thermal load understanding prior to electrification and highlight the potential of LEED-aligned passive strategies for achieving high-performance, low-energy buildings. Amplifying corporate environmental investments is a pivotal strategy for achieving the “carbon peak and carbon neutral” objectives of China’s green development initiative. The digital transformation has the potential to generate new quality productive forces by leveraging data, thereby promoting green technology innovation, enhancing technology efficiency, and leveraging the impact of resource reallocation. Consequently, this transition enables enterprises to transition from a “passive compliance” model to a “proactive enhancement” model, thereby achieving a significant quality leap forward in their environmental investment. The present study utilises a sample of Chinese A-share companies from 2011 to 2023 to innovatively construct a multifaceted data model to quantitatively analyse the impact of digital transformation on corporate environmental investment. This analysis incorporates the intermediary effects of enhanced new quality productive forces, the intermediary effects of data application, and the threshold effects of environmental uncertainty, as well as the non-linear effects of industry, property rights, regional differences, policy, and the intensity of production factors. The study’s findings are as follows: (1) Digital transformation significantly promotes corporate environmental investment, and this conclusion is robust. (2) The new quality productive forces have a positive intermediary effect on corporate environmental investment during digital transformation. (3) The application of big data has been demonstrated to moderate the intermediary effects of “digital transformation-new quality productive forces-enterprise environmental investment.” (4) The impact of environmental uncertainty on corporate environmental investment during the digital transformation process is characterised by a “barrier effect,” exhibiting a “border effect” that is non-linear in nature. (5) In the context of the lightweight pollution industry, non-state-owned enterprises, the eastern region, and the implementation of environmental policies, the efficacy of digital transformation in enhancing corporate environmental investment is particularly pronounced. In light of the aforementioned, the present study puts forth four specific recommendations, offering invaluable insights for the contemporary Chinese enterprise to navigate the process of transformation and achieve sustainable, high-quality growth. Robotic assembly of electrical connectors enables the automation of high-efficiency production of electronic products. A rigid gripper is adopted as the end-effector by the majority of existing works with a force–torque sensor installed at the wrist, which suffers from very limited perception capability of the manipulated objects. Moreover, the grasping and movement actions, as well as the inconsistency between the robot base and the end-effector frame, tend to result in angular misalignment, usually leading to assembly failure. Bio-inspired by the human finger, we designed a tactile finger in this paper with three characteristics: (1) Compliance: A soft ‘skin’ layer provides passive compliance for plenty of manipulation actions, thus increasing the tolerance for alignment errors. (2) Tactile Perception: Two types of sensing elements are embedded into the soft skin to tactilely sense the involved contact status. (3) Enhanced manipulation force: A rigid fingernail is designed to enhance the manipulation force and enable potential delicate operations. Moreover, a tactile-based alignment algorithm is proposed to search for the optimal orientation angle about the z axis. In the application of U-disk insertion, the three characteristics are validated and a success rate of 100% is achieved, whose generalization capability is also validated through the assembly of three types of electrical connectors. A vast proportion of scientific data remains locked behind dynamic web interfaces, often called the deep web—inaccessible to conventional search engines and standard crawlers. This gap between data availability and machine usability hampers the goals of open science and automation. While registries like FAIRsharing offer structured metadata describing data standards, repositories, and policies aligned with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles, they do not enable seamless, programmatic access to the underlying datasets. We present FAIRFind, a system designed to bridge this accessibility gap. FAIRFind autonomously discovers, interprets, and operationalizes access paths to biological databases on the deep web, regardless of their FAIR compliance. Central to our approach is the Deep Web Communication Protocol (DWCP), a resource description language that represents web forms, HyperText Markup Language (HTML) tables, and file-based data interfaces in a machine-actionable format. Leveraging large language models (LLMs), FAIRFind combines a specialized deep web crawler and web-form comprehension engine to transform passive web metadata into executable workflows. By indexing and embedding these workflows, FAIRFind enables natural language querying over diverse biological data sources and returns structured, source-resolved results. Evaluation across multiple open-source LLMs and database types demonstrates over 90% success in structured data extraction and high semantic retrieval accuracy. FAIRFind advances existing registries by turning linked resources from static references into actionable endpoints, laying a foundation for intelligent, autonomous data discovery across scientific domains. Promoting municipal solid waste (MSW) sorting is critical to advancing sustainable and low-carbon urban development. While existing research often focuses separately on external policy tools or internal behavioral drivers, limited attention has been given to their joint effects within an integrated framework. This study addresses this gap by analyzing micro-survey data from 1983 residents across 34 prefecture-level and above cities in China, using a bivariate probit model to examine how policy tools and policy perception—both independently and interactively—shape residents’ active and passive compliance with MSW sorting policies. The findings reveal five key insights. First, the adoption and spatial distribution of policy tools are uneven: environment-type tools dominate, supply-type tools are moderately deployed, and demand-type tools are underutilized. Second, both policy tools and policy perception significantly promote compliance behaviors, with policy cognition exerting the strongest effect. Third, differential effects are observed—policy cognition primarily drives active compliance, whereas policy acceptance more strongly predicts passive compliance. Fourth, synergistic effects emerge when supply-type tools are combined with environment-type or demand-type tools. Finally, policy perception not only directly enhances compliance but also moderates the effectiveness of policy tools, with notable heterogeneity among residents with higher cognitive or emotional alignment. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of compliance mechanisms and offer practical implications for designing perception-sensitive and regionally adaptive MSW governance strategies. Background/Objectives: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is commonly associated with postoperative muscle atrophy and weakness, while traditional rehabilitation is often limited by pain and patient compliance. Passive blood flow restriction (pBFR) training may offer a safe, low-threshold method to attenuate muscle loss in this early phase. This pilot study examined the feasibility, safety, and early effects of pBFR initiated during hospitalization on muscle mass, swelling, and functional recovery after TKA. Methods: In a prospective, single-blinded trial, 26 patients undergoing primary or aseptic revision TKA were randomized to either a control group (CON: sham BFR at 20 mmHg) or intervention group (INT: pBFR at 80% limb occlusion pressure). Both groups received 50 min daily in-hospital rehabilitation sessions for five consecutive days. Outcomes, including lean muscle mass (DXA), thigh/knee circumference, 6 min walk test (6 MWT), handgrip strength, and patient-reported outcomes, were assessed preoperatively and at discharge, six weeks, and three months postoperatively. Linear mixed models with Bonferroni correction were applied. Results: The INT group showed significant preservation of thigh circumference (p = 0.002), reduced knee swelling (p < 0.001), and maintenance of lean muscle mass (p < 0.01), compared with CON, which exhibited significant declines. Functional performance improved faster in INT (e.g., 6 MWT increase at T3: +23.7%, p < 0.001; CON: −7.2%, n.s.). Quality of life improved in both groups, with greater gains in INT (p < 0.05). No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Initiating pBFR training on the first postoperative day is feasible, safe, and effective in preserving muscle mass and reducing swelling after TKA. These findings extend prior BFR research by demonstrating its applicability in older, surgical populations. Further research is warranted to evaluate its integration with standard rehabilitation programs and long-term functional benefits. Full article

Sustainable THz SWIPT via RIS-Enabled Sensing and Adaptive Power Focusing: Toward Green 6G IoT

Terahertz (THz) communications and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) hold the potential to energize battery-less Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices while enabling multi-gigabit data transmission. However, severe path loss, blockages, and rectifier nonlinearity significantly hinder both throughput and harvested energy. Additionally, high-power THz beams pose safety concerns by potentially exceeding specific absorption rate (SAR) limits. We propose a sensing-adaptive power-focusing (APF) framework in which a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) embeds low-rate THz sensors. Real-time backscatter measurements construct a spatial map used for the joint optimisation of (i) RIS phase configurations, (ii) multi-tone SWIPT waveforms, and (iii) nonlinear power-splitting ratios. A weighted MMSE inner loop maximizes the data rate, while an outer alternating optimisation applies semidefinite relaxation to enforce passive-element constraints and SAR compliance. Full-stack simulations at 0.3 THz with 20 GHz bandwidth and up to 256 RIS elements show that APF (i) improves the rate–energy Pareto frontier by 30–75% over recent adaptive baselines; (ii) achieves a 150% gain in harvested energy and a 440 Mbps peak per-user rate; (iii) reduces energy-efficiency variance by half while maintaining a Jain fairness index of 0.999;; and (iv) caps SAR at 1.6 W/kg, which is 20% below the IEEE C95.1 safety threshold. The algorithm converges in seven iterations and executes within <3 ms on a Cortex-A78 processor, ensuring compliance with real-time 6G control budgets. The proposed architecture supports sustainable THz-powered networks for smart factories, digital-twin logistics, wire-free extended reality (XR), and low-maintenance structural health monitors, combining high-capacity communication, safe wireless power transfer, and carbon-aware operation for future 6G cyber–physical systems. Egg yolk immunoglobulin Y (IgY) possesses advantages such as low cost, easy availability, simple preparation, high antigen specificity, absence of drug residues, and compliance with animal welfare standards, making it an environmentally friendly and safe alternative to antibiotics. This research utilizes IgY antibody technology to develop a multivalent passive immune vaccine for major pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture. In this study, IgY antibodies against live Shewanella xiamenensis (LSX-IgY) and inactivated S. xiamenensis (ISX-IgY) were prepared by immunizing laying hens, and passive immunization protection experiments were conducted in Carassius auratus infected with S. xiamenensis and Aeromonas hydrophila. The passive immunization protection rates of LSX-IgY and ISX-IgY against S. xiamenensis were 63.64% and 72.73%, respectively, and the passive cross-protection rates against A. hydrophila were 50% and 71.43%, respectively. Further, C. auratus sera could specifically bind to S. xiamenensis or A. hydrophila in vitro, and the phagocytic activity of leukocytes was increased. LSX-IgY and ISX-IgY could reduce the bacterial load in the C. auratus kidneys. Meanwhile, they could significantly reduce the levels of antioxidant factors in serum and inhibit the mRNA expression of inflammation-related factors in the kidneys and spleens. Additionally, histopathology and immunofluorescence analysis showed that both IgY preparations preserved tissue integrity and reduced the expression of apoptosis factor (p53) and DNA damage factor (γH2A.X) of visceral organs, respectively. In summary, LSX-IgY and ISX-IgY can combat various bacterial infections, with no significant difference between the two. Additionally, inactivated bacterial immunization is more aligned with animal welfare standards for laying hens. Therefore, ISX-IgY is expected to serve as a multivalent vaccine against major aquaculture pathogens. Full article

Series elastic actuators (SEAs) represent a key technological solution to enhance safety, performance, and adaptability in robotic devices for physical training. Their ability to decouple the rigid actuator’s mechanical impedance from the load, combined with passive absorption of external disturbances, makes them particularly suitable for pediatric applications. In children aged 2 to 5 years—where motor control is still developing and movements can be unpredictable or unstructured—SEAs provide a compliant mechanical response that ensures user protection and enables safe physical interaction. This study explores the role of SEAs as a central component for imparting compliance and backdrivability in robotic systems designed for upper-limb training. A dynamic model is proposed, incorporating interaction with the user’s limb, along with a computed torque control strategy featuring integral action. The system’s performance is validated through simulations and experimental tests, demonstrating stable trajectory tracking, disturbance absorption, and effective impedance decoupling. The results support the use of SEAs as a foundational technology for developing safe adaptive robotic solutions in pediatric contexts capable of responding flexibly to user variability and promoting secure interaction in early motor development environments. The oil and gas industry is subject to significant fire hazards due to the flammability of hydrocarbons and the extreme conditions of operational facilities. Intumescent coatings (ICs) serve as a crucial passive fire protection strategy, forming an insulating char layer when exposed to heat, thereby reducing heat transfer and delaying structural failure. This review article provides an overview of recent developments in the effectiveness of ICs in mitigating fire risks, enhancing structural resilience, and reducing environmental impacts within the oil and gas industry. The literature surveyed shows that analytical techniques, such as thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and large-scale fire testing, have been used to evaluate the thermal insulation performances of the coatings. The results indicate significant temperature reductions on protected steel surfaces that extend critical failure times under hydrocarbon fire conditions. Recent advancements in nano-enhanced and bio-derived ICs have also improved thermal stability and mechanical durability. Furthermore, numerical modeling based on heat transfer, mass conservation, and kinetic equations aids in optimizing formulations for real-world applications. Nevertheless, challenges remain in terms of standardizing modeling frameworks and enhancing the environmental sustainability of ICs. This review highlights the progress made and the opportunities for continuous advances and innovation in IC technologies to meet the ever-evolving challenges and complexities in oil and gas industry operations. Consequently, the need to enhance fire protection by utilizing a combination of tools improves predictive modeling and supports regulatory compliance in high-risk industrial environments. Compliant force control is a fundamental capability for enabling robots to interact safely and effectively with dynamic and uncertain environments. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of compliant force control strategies, intending to enhance safety, adaptability, and precision in applications such as physical human–robot interaction, robotic manipulation, and collaborative tasks. The review begins with a classification of compliant control methods into passive and active approaches, followed by a detailed examination of direct force control techniques—including hybrid and parallel force/position control—and indirect methods such as impedance and admittance control. Special emphasis is placed on advanced compliant control strategies applied to structurally complex robotic systems, including aerial, mobile, cable-driven, and bionic robots. In addition, intelligent compliant control approaches are systematically analyzed, encompassing neural networks, fuzzy logic, sliding mode control, and reinforcement learning. Sensorless compliance techniques are also discussed, along with emerging trends in hardware design and intelligent control methodologies. This survey provides a holistic view of the current landscape, identifies key technical challenges, and outlines future research directions for achieving more robust, intelligent, and adaptive compliant force control in robotic systems.
