High-modulus asphalt, with its excellent fatigue resistance and high-temperature resistance, is gradually becoming a preferred material for the development of durable asphalt pavements. However, its poor low-temperature performance has become one of the key bottlenecks restricting its wide application. In recent years, in-depth analysis of the mechanism underlying the changes in the low-temperature performance of high-modulus asphalt has gradually become a research focus in the field of asphalt pavements. Accordingly, this study selected four representative high-modulus asphalts, conducted bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests to obtain their low-temperature creep parameters, and used three viscoelastic constitutive models to investigate their low-temperature constitutive relationships. Grey relational analysis (GRA) was further applied to evaluate the models. The results show that, when evaluating the low-temperature performance of high-modulus asphalt, the elastic and viscous parameters variation laws, for the three-parameter solid (TPS) model and four-parameter solid (FPS) model, are not obvious and have large fluctuations, and the accuracy of the fitting curves is relatively low, while the Burgers model has extremely high fitting accuracy, with small parameter fluctuations and significant regularity. The GRA model reveals that the Burgers model is more suitable than the TPS and FPS models for describing the low-temperature creep behavior of high-modulus asphalt, which further confirms the reliability of using the Burgers model to evaluate the low-temperature performance of high-modulus asphalt. The United States produces approximately 500 million tons of asphalt mixtures annually, while generating vast amounts of waste materials that could be repurposed for sustainable infrastructure. Each year, 1.4 billion gallons of lubricating oils are available for reuse and recycling. Additionally, 280 million tires are discarded, contributing to significant environmental challenges. Given the critical role of the roadway network in economic growth, mobility, and infrastructure sustainability, there is a pressing need for innovative material solutions that integrate recycled materials without compromising performance. This study introduces a Rubberized-Aerogel Composite (RaC), a novel asphalt binder modifier combining crumb rubber, recycled oil, and a silica-based aerogel to enhance the sustainability and durability of asphalt pavements. The research methodology involved blending the RaC with the PG70-10 asphalt binder at a 5:1 ratio and conducting comprehensive laboratory tests on binders and mixtures, including rheology, thermal conductivity (TC), specific heat capacity (Cp), the Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Test (HWTT), and indirect tensile strength (IDT). Pavement performance was simulated using AASHTOWare Pavement ME under hot and cold climates with thin and thick pavement structures. Results showed that RaC-modified binders reduced thermal conductivity by up to 30% and increased specific heat capacity by 15%, improving thermal stability. RaC mixtures exhibited a 50% reduction in rut depth in the HWTT and lower thermal expansion/contraction coefficients. Pavement ME simulations predicted up to 40% less permanent deformation and 60% reduced thermal cracking for RaC mixtures compared to the controls. RaC enhances pavement lifespan, reduces maintenance costs, and promotes environmental sustainability by repurposing waste materials, offering a scalable solution for resilient infrastructure. Recent advances in prefabricated construction have enabled modular systems offering structural performance, rapid assembly, and design flexibility. Textile Ceramic Technology (TCT) integrates ceramic elements within a stainless-steel mesh, creating versatile architectural envelopes for façades, roofs, and pavements. This study investigates the integration of silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules into TCT to develop an industrialized Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) system that maintains energy efficiency and visual coherence. Three full-scale solar brick prototypes are presented, detailing design objectives, experimental results, and conclusions. The first prototype demonstrated the feasibility of scaling small silicon PV units with good efficiency but limited aesthetic integration. The second embedded PV cells within ceramic bricks, improving aesthetics while maintaining electrical performance. Durability tests—including humidity, temperature cycling, wind, and hail impact—confirmed system stability, though structural reinforcement is needed for impact resistance. The third prototype outlines future work focusing on modularity and industrial scalability. Results confirm the technical viability of silicon PV integration in TCT, enabling active façades that generate renewable energy without compromising architectural freedom or aesthetics. Geopolymers are an environmentally sustainable class of low-calcium alkali-activated materials (AAMs), distinct from high-calcium C–A–S–H gel systems. Synthesized from aluminosilicate-rich precursors such as fly ash, metakaolin, slag, waste glass, and coal gasification fly ash (CGFA), geopolymers offer a significantly lower carbon footprint, valorize industrial by-products, and demonstrate superior durability in aggressive environments compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Recent advances in thermodynamic modeling and phase chemistry, particularly in CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 systems, are improving precursor selection and mix design optimization, while Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and hybrid ML-thermodynamic approaches show promise for predictive performance assessment. This review critically evaluates geopolymer chemistry and composition, emphasizing precursor reactivity, Si/Al and other molar ratios, activator chemistry, curing regimes, and reaction mechanisms in relation to microstructure and performance. Comparative insights into alkali aluminosilicate (AAS) and aluminosilicate phosphate (ASP) systems, supported by SEM and XRD evidence, are discussed alongside durability challenges, including alkali–silica reaction (ASR) and shrinkage. Emerging applications ranging from advanced pavements and offshore scour protection to slow-release fertilizers and biomedical implants are reviewed within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Identified knowledge gaps include standardization of mix design, LCA-based evaluation of novel precursors, and variability management. Aligning geopolymer technology with circular economy principles, this review consolidates recent progress to guide sustainable construction, waste valorization, and infrastructure resilience. Diamond grinding is a key concrete pavement restoration technique for concrete pavements. Traffic degrades the serviceability of the concrete pavements, resulting in unsatisfactory skid levels and noise concerns. Diamond grinding is known to enhance longevity and performance by improving smoothness and friction. By removing flaws with a cutting head equipped with diamond blades, the procedure produces a “corduroy” texture that enhances braking and stability. Diamond grinding typically results in a 20–80% reduction in the International Roughness Index, significantly enhancing pavement smoothness. It also improves macrotexture and creates longitudinal drainage channels, which collectively increase skid resistance and lower the chance of hydroplaning. The paper aims to highlight the need for diamond grinding for concrete pavements, which, despite their longevity, have decreased serviceability from traffic. The review further explores emerging innovations and identifies the gaps in long-term performance tracking and life-cycle environmental assessment. This paper reviews the effectiveness of diamond grinding as a pavement rehabilitation technique, with emphasis on ride quality, surface friction, noise reduction, and durability. Field applications and evaluation metrics are discussed to assess their contribution to pavement performance. This review aims to support researchers, pavement engineers, and agencies by providing a comprehensive understanding of diamond grinding’s applications, performance metrics, and potential for sustainable pavement management. This study presents the development and performance evaluation of a rock asphalt-modified damping asphalt binder tailored for interlayer applications in photovoltaic pavement systems. A series of composite binders was formulated by incorporating Qingchuan rock asphalt, crumb rubber powder, and SBS polymer into base asphalt using an orthogonal design approach. The effects of different modifiers and their interactions were systematically assessed through conventional physical tests, DSR, BBR and damping ratio measurements. Furthermore, full-scale specimens (30 cm × 30 cm) were subjected to both single-pass and 24 h sustained loading tests to simulate real-world stress conditions. The results revealed that rock asphalt (RA) significantly enhanced the high-temperature stiffness and rutting resistance, while SBS improved ductility and low-temperature flexibility. Rubber powder (RP) notably increased the damping ratio, demonstrating superior energy dissipation potential. Among the nine formulations, the ternary blend of SBS, RA, and RP (denoted as L5) exhibited the most balanced and optimal performance, with G*/sinδ exceeding 5.0 kPa at 64 °C, a ductility of 132 cm, and damping ratios above 0.14. Load testing confirmed the material’s capacity for both instantaneous deformation resistance and delayed elastic recovery. These findings suggest that the L5 formulation is well suited for use in smart pavements where both mechanical durability and vibration attenuation are required. Full article

Fatigue failure of bitumen significantly influences the durability and service life of asphalt pavement. Current fatigue tests have drawbacks such as long durations, unrealistic traffic loading simulations, and difficulties of identifying failure mechanisms. Similarly, existing prediction models are often overly complex and inaccurate. To solve these drawbacks, in this study, a novel accelerated cyclic shear test in stress-controlled mode using a dynamic shear rheometer was introduced to evaluate the fatigue performance and reveal the fatigue failure mechanism of bitumen. The sigmoidal function was applied to develop a simplified fatigue failure prediction model for bitumen through stress and temperature shifts. The results demonstrate that bitumen’s response under the newly proposed loading method aligns consistently with behaviour characteristic of a plasticity-controlled failure mechanism. The variable parameter load ratio significantly influenced the bitumen’s time-to-failure, which increased as the load ratio decreased. Bitumen exhibited the longest time-to-failure when the load ratio (minimum stress/maximum stress) was 0.1. The developed model effectively predicted the time-to-failure of bitumen across different load ratios and under various temperature and stress conditions. Full article

The growing emphasis on sustainable road construction has stimulated interest in environmentally friendly bitumen modifiers. This study presents the development of biodegradable adhesion promoters synthesized via the amidation of renewable raw materials (rapeseed oil and higher fatty acids) with polyethylene polyamine. The main objective was to improve bitumen–aggregate adhesion while maintaining the essential physico-mechanical and rheological properties of the bitumen. The synthesized bio-based adhesion promoters were incorporated into penetration-grade bitumen at a dosage of 0.4 wt.%. Physico-mechanical testing confirmed that their inclusion does not significantly affect the fundamental properties of the bitumen, while substantially enhancing adhesion to both glass and mineral aggregates. Rheological analysis showed that the rapeseed oil-based adhesion promoter had minimal influence on viscoelastic behavior. In contrast, the fatty acid-based promoter increased the rutting resistance parameter (|G*|/sinδ) and decreased the phase angle (δ), indicating improved resistance to permanent deformation. FTIR spectroscopy further revealed that the fatty acid-based adhesion promoter significantly reduced the formation of carbonyl groups during short-term aging, suggesting a retardation in oxidative aging and potential rejuvenating effects. In conclusion, the proposed bio-based adhesion promoters, derived from renewable sources and fully biodegradable, represent a promising solution for enhancing bitumen performance and supporting the durability and sustainability of asphalt pavements. This study evaluates the rheological behavior and mechanical performance of Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) mixes with varying superplasticizer dosages, aiming to optimize their use in pavement rehabilitation overlays on sloped surfaces. A reference self-compacting UHPFRC mix was modified by reducing the superplasticizer-to-binder ratio in incremental steps, and the resulting mixes were assessed through rheometry, mini-Slump, and Abrams cone tests. Key rheological parameters—static and dynamic yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy—were determined using the modified Bingham model. The results showed that reducing superplasticizer content increased yield stress and viscosity, enhancing thixotropic behavior while maintaining ultra-high compressive (≥130 MPa) and flexural strength (≥20 MPa) at 28 days. A predictive model was validated to estimate the critical yield stress needed for overlays on slopes. Among the evaluated formulations, the SP-2 mix met the stability and performance criteria and was successfully tested in a prototype overlay, demonstrating its viability for field application. This research confirms the potential of rheology-tailored UHPFRC as a high-performance solution for durable and stable pavement overlays in demanding geometric conditions. Full article

Rapid pavement repair demands materials that combine accelerated strength gains, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and sustainability. However, finding materials or formulations that offer these balances remains a critical challenge. This study systematically evaluates two polymer-modified belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes—CSAP (powdered polymer) and CSA-LLP (liquid polymer admixture)—against a traditional Type III Portland cement (OPC) control under both laboratory and realistic outdoor conditions. Laboratory specimens were tested for fresh properties, early-age and later-age compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, as well as drying shrinkage according to ASTM standards. Outdoor 5 × 4 × 12-inch slabs mimicking typical jointed plain concrete panels (JPCPs), instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges and thermocouples, recorded the strain and temperature at 5 min intervals over 16 weeks, with 24 h wet-burlap curing to replicate field practices. Laboratory findings show that CSA mixes exceeded 3200 psi of compressive strength at 4 h, but cold outdoor casting (~48 °F) delayed the early-age strength development. The CSA-LLP exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage (0.036% at 16 weeks), and outdoor CSA slabs captured the initial ettringite-driven expansion, resulting in a net expansion (+200 µε) rather than contraction. Approximately 80% of the total strain evolved within the first 48 h, driven by autogenous and plastic effects. CSA mixes generated lower peak internal temperatures and reduced thermal strain amplitudes compared to the OPC, improving dimensional stability and mitigating restraint-induced cracking. These results underscore the necessity of field validation for shrinkage compensation mechanisms and highlight the critical roles of the polymer type and curing protocol in optimizing CSA-based repairs for durable, low-carbon pavement rehabilitation. With rising global temperatures and increasing sustainability demands, the need for advanced pavement solutions has never been greater. This study breaks new ground by integrating phase change materials (PCMs), including paraffin-based wax (Rubitherm RT55), hydrated salt (Climator Salt S10), and fatty acid (lauric acid), as binder modifiers within warm mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures. Moving beyond the traditional focus on binder-only modifications, this research utilizes recycled cigarette filters (CFs) as a dual-purpose fiber additive, directly reinforcing the asphalt mixture while simultaneously transforming a major urban waste stream into valuable infrastructure. The performance of the developed WMA mixture has been evaluated in terms of stiffness behavior using an Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) test, permanent deformation using a static creep strain test, and rutting resistance using the Hamburg wheel-track test. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the incorporation of PCMs and recycled CFs into WMA mixtures led to remarkable improvements in stiffness, deformation resistance, and rutting performance. Modified mixes consistently outperformed the control, achieving up to 15% higher stiffness after 7 days of curing, 36% lower creep strain after 4000 s, and 64% reduction in rut depth at 20,000 passes. Cost–benefit analysis and service life prediction show that, despite costing USD 0.71 more per square meter with 5 cm thickness, the modified WMA mixture delivers much greater durability and rutting resistance, extending service life to 19–29 years compared to 10–15 years for the control. This highlights the value of these modifications for durable, sustainable pavements. Full article

This research aimed to evaluate the impact of using brick waste powder (BWP) and varying lengths of polyester fibers (PFs) on the performance properties of asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures. BWP was utilized as a replacement for traditional limestone powder (LS) filler, while PFs of three lengths (3 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm) were introduced. The study employed the response surface methodology (RSM) for experimental design and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to identify the influence of BWP and PF on the selected performance indicators. These indicators included bulk density, air voids, voids in the mineral aggregate, voids filled with asphalt, Marshall stability, Marshall flow, Marshall quotient, indirect tensile strength, wet tensile strength, and the tensile strength ratio. The findings demonstrated that BWP improved moisture resistance and the mechanical performance of AC mixes. Moreover, incorporating PF alongside BWP further enhanced these properties, resulting in superior overall performance. Using multi-objective optimization through RSM-based empirical models, the study identified the optimal PF length of 5 mm in combination with BWP for achieving the best AC properties. Validation experiments confirmed the accuracy of the predicted results, with an error margin of less than 8%. The study emphasizes the intriguing prospect of BWP and PF as sustainable alternatives for improving the durability, mechanical characteristics, and cost-efficiency of asphalt pavements. Full article

In response to the escalating climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) has become a top priority for both the public and private sectors. The pavement industry plays a key role in this transition, offering innovative technologies that minimize environmental impacts without compromising performance. Among these, the incorporation of recycled tire rubber and warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additives represents a promising strategy to reduce energy consumption and resource depletion in road construction. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental performance of an asphalt pavement incorporating recycled rubber and a WMA additive—referred to as R-W asphalt—against a conventional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement. The analysis follows the ISO 14040/44 standards, covering material production, transport, construction, and maintenance. Two service-life scenarios are considered: one assuming equivalent durability and another with a five-year extension for the R-W pavement. The results demonstrate environmental impact reductions of up to 57%, with average savings ranging from 32% to 52% across key impact categories such as climate change, land use, and resource use. These benefits are primarily attributed to lower production temperatures and extended maintenance intervals. This paper presents a critical and comprehensive review of the application of mining waste, specifically waste rock and tailings, in asphalt pavements, with the aim of synthesizing performance outcomes and identifying key research gaps. A systematic literature search yielded a final dataset of 41 peer-reviewed articles for detailed analysis. Bibliometric analysis indicates a notable upward trend in annual publications, reflecting growing academic and practical interest in this field. Performance-based evaluations demonstrate that mining wastes, particularly iron and copper tailings, have the potential to enhance the high-temperature performance (i.e., rutting resistance) of asphalt binders and mixtures when utilized as fillers or aggregates. However, their effects on fatigue life, low-temperature cracking, and moisture susceptibility are inconsistent, largely influenced by the physicochemical properties and dosage of the specific waste material. Despite promising results, critical knowledge gaps remain, particularly in relation to long-term durability, comprehensive environmental and economic Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA), and the inherent variability of waste materials. This review underscores the substantial potential of mining wastes as sustainable alternatives to conventional pavement materials, while emphasizing the need for further multidisciplinary research to support their broader implementation. Quality requirements for mineral aggregate for concrete used to construct pavement for busy highways are high because of the fatigue traffic loads and environmental exposure. The use of local aggregate for infrastructure projects could result in important sustainability improvements, provided that the concrete’s durability is assured. The objective of this study was to identify the potential alkaline reactivity of local greywacke aggregate and select appropriate mitigation measures against the alkali–silica reaction. Experimental tests on concrete specimens were performed using the miniature concrete prism test at 60 °C. Mixtures of coarse greywacke aggregate up to 12.5 mm with natural fine aggregate of different potential reactivity were evaluated in respect to the expansion, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the concrete. Two preventive measures were studied—the use of metakaolin and slag-blended cement. A moderate reactivity potential of the greywacke aggregate was found, and the influence of reactive quartz sand on the expansion and instability of the mechanical properties of concrete was evaluated. Both crystalline and amorphous alkali–silica reaction products were detected in the cracks of the greywacke aggregate. Efficient expansion mitigation was obtained for the replacement of 15% of Portland cement by metakaolin or the use of CEM III/A cement with the slag content of 52%, even if greywacke aggregate was blended with moderately reactive quartz sand. It resulted in a relative reduction in expansion by 85–96%. The elastic modulus deterioration was less than 10%, confirming an increased stability of the elastic properties of concrete. Full article
