Fruits and vegetables are essential for a healthy diet, providing vital nutrients and contributing to global food security. Fungal pathogens that interact with fruits and vegetables reduce their quality and shelf life and lead to economic losses and risks to human health through the production of mycotoxins. Chemical fungicides, used to control postharvest pathogens, are posing serious environmental and health risks, driving interest in safer alternative strategies. Biocontrol methods using antagonistic microbes, such as yeasts, are eco-friendly, sustainable, and the most promising, but they often have limited efficacy and specificity in diverse produce. There is growing interest in the innovative enhancement of biocontrol strategies. The present review shows that inducing, enhancing, co-application, encapsulation, and post-application treatments are common enhancement techniques, while environmental, host, and pathogen characteristics, antagonistic microbial traits, and chemical inputs are the major gearing factors for the best application methods. These methods do not involve genetic modification, which is adequate to reduce the proliferation of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) while optimizing antagonistic microbial performance by promoting growth, inducing host resistance, enhancing antifungal properties, improving adhesion, and boosting stress tolerance. Most enhancers fall under groups of nutritional additives, protective carriers, growth stimulants, and encapsulants. Integrating these enhancers and best methods promises reduced postharvest losses, supports sustainable agriculture, and addresses economic losses and food security challenges. This study highlights the role of organic and natural elicitors, their application methods, their mechanisms in improving BCAs (Biological Control Agents), and their overall efficiency. This review concisely compiles recent strategies, calling for further research to revolutionize fungal pathogen management, reduce food waste, and promote responsible farming practices. Full article

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a vital crop cultivated primarily in developing regions, playing a strategic role in global food security through its significant contribution to nutrition, economy, and livelihoods. Global and regional production trends revealed increasing demand and expanded cultivation areas, underpinning the fruit’s importance in national food security policies and economic frameworks. The date fruit’s rich nutritional profile, encompassing carbohydrates, dietary fiber, minerals, and bioactive compounds, supports its status as a functional food with health benefits. Postharvest technologies and quality preservation strategies, including temperature-controlled storage, advanced drying, edible coatings, and emerging AI-driven monitoring systems, are critical to reducing losses and maintaining quality across diverse cultivars and maturity stages. Processing techniques such as drying, irradiation, and cold plasma distinctly influence sugar composition, texture, polyphenol retention, and sensory acceptance, with cultivar- and stage-specific responses guiding optimization efforts. The cold chain and innovative packaging solutions, including vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging, along with biopolymer-based edible coatings, enhance storage efficiency and microbial safety, though economic and practical constraints remain, especially for smallholders. Microbial contamination, a major challenge in date fruit storage and export, is addressed through integrated preservation approaches combining thermal, non-thermal, and biopreservative treatment. However, gaps in microbial safety data, mycotoxin evaluation, and regulatory harmonization hinder broader application. Date fruit derivatives such as flesh, syrup, seeds, press cake, pomace, and vinegar offer versatile functional roles across food systems. They improve nutritional value, sensory qualities, and shelf life in bakery, dairy, meat, and beverage products while supporting sustainable waste valorization. Emerging secondary derivatives like powders and extracts further expand the potential for clean-label, health-promoting applications. This comprehensive review underscores the need for multidisciplinary research and development to advance sustainable production, postharvest management, and value-added utilization of date palm fruits, fostering enhanced food security, economic benefits, and consumer health worldwide. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is an innovative non-thermal sterilization and preservation method that has recently emerged as a safe, effective, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative for biomedical applications. Curcumin (Cur), a commonly used food additive, possesses photosensitizing properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of curcumin-mediated photodynamic treatment (Cur-PDT) on the preservation of fresh wolfberries. Our experimental data revealed that a Cur-PDT treatment using a cur concentration of 500 μmol/L for 30 min, with 20 W irradiation, achieved the best preservation effect on fresh wolfberries. This intervention significantly slowed the decline in post-harvest hardness and delayed the progression of decay. It also reduced the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (•O2). Notably, at day 3, the enzymatic activities of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in Cur-PDT-treated wolfberries were 1.12 and 1.88 times higher, respectively, than those in the control group. These elevated enzyme activities promoted the biosynthesis and recycling of ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH), leading to their substantial accumulation under oxidative stress conditions. By modulating the antioxidant defense system, Cur-PDT has the potential to extend the shelf-life of post-harvest wolfberries and enhance their overall quality attributes, thereby maintaining physiological homeostasis during storage. Additionally, this review delves into the innovative role of nanotechnology-enhanced BCAs (Nano-BCAs), emphasizing nanoencapsulation, improved biofilm formation, targeted delivery, and antimicrobial synergy. While promising, Nano-BCA application requires risk assessment, regulatory clarity, and cost-effective scalability. Table grapes (fresh Vitis vinifera L. fruit) rank among the top five fruit crops worldwide, yet their high perishability poses significant challenges for postharvest handling and storage. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of current and emerging preservation strategies—including chemical fumigation, irradiation, packaging technologies, controlled-atmosphere (CA) storage, biodegradable coatings, and synergistic preservation systems. Distinct from prior studies that typically emphasize specific techniques or treatment categories, this work integrates mechanistic insights with technological advancements and industrial practices across multiple preservation modalities. It further evaluates the comparative effectiveness, limitations, and practical relevance of these strategies along the supply chain. Importantly, it identifies critical research gaps—such as the lack of cultivar-specific preservation protocols, the need for low-residue and environmentally sustainable treatments, and the absence of real-time quality monitoring systems. Addressing these gaps is essential for developing next-generation solutions. Finally, this review highlights practical implications by offering a forward-looking framework to guide innovation, providing grape producers and supply chain stakeholders with strategies to minimize losses, preserve quality, and enhance market competitiveness. UV-C irradiation is an innovative postharvest technique for increasing the safety of fruits and vegetables. This study investigated the effect of UV-C rays (UV-C1 = 0.26 KJ/m2; UV-C2 = 0.40 KJ/m2; UV-C3 = 0.67 KJ/m2; and UV-C4 = 1.34 KJ/m2) on the preservation of the antioxidants, hardness, and color of fresh green asparagus during storage. UV-C1 and UV-C2 significantly maintained higher total phenolic content (10.6%), total flavonoid content (36%), rutin (14.3%), quercetin (27.03%), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (21.25%), and antioxidant activity (DPPH 7.5%). Over three weeks of storage, quercetin, ferulic acid, and kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside increased, while rutin and caffeic acid decreased. Storage caused a significant change in the color and hardness of the control sample, but UV-C4 counteracted hardening for up to three weeks, and UV-C3 was the best dose for stabilizing color during storage. This study indicates that the choice of UV-C dose can be modulated based on the characteristics that are intended to be preserved in green asparagus, maintaining a balance between nutraceutical and hedonic characteristics. To maintain the maximum level of nutraceutical compounds over time, UV-C2 can be adopted, while to preserve texture and color, UV-C3 and UV-C4 are a better choice. Full article

Postharvest storage of kiwifruit requires the implementation of precise environmental conditions to maintain fruit quality and reduce decay. In this research, conducted over two years, we examined whether the storage conditions, characterized by low temperature (1 ± 1 °C) and ultra-high relative humidity (higher than 99%, close to saturation), generated by the Xedavap® machine from Xeda International, were effective in maintaining the fruit quality and reducing postharvest rots compared to standard storage conditions, characterized by involved low temperature (1 ± 1 °C) and high relative humidity (98%). Kiwifruits preserved under the experimental conditions exhibited a significantly lower rot incidence after 60 days of storage, with the treated fruits showing 4.48% rot compared to 23.03% under the standard conditions in the first year, using inoculated fruits, and 6.30% versus 9.20% in the second year using naturally infected fruits, respectively. After shelf life (second year only), rot incidence remained significantly lower in the treated fruits (12.80%) compared to the control (42.30%). Additionally, quality analyses showed better parameters when using the Xedavap® system over standard methods. The ripening process was effectively slowed down, as indicated by changes in the total soluble solids, firmness, and titratable acidity compared to the control. These results highlight the potential of ultra-high relative humidity conditions to reduce postharvest rot, extend the shelf life, and enhance the marketability of kiwifruit, presenting a promising and innovative solution for the horticultural industry. Agriculture is the foundational industry for human survival, profoundly impacting economic, ecological, and social dimensions. In the face of global challenges such as rapid population growth, resource scarcity, and climate change, achieving technological innovation in agriculture and advancing smart farming have become increasingly critical. In recent years, deep learning and computer vision have developed rapidly. Key areas in computer vision—such as deep learning-based image processing, object detection, and multimodal fusion—are rapidly transforming traditional agricultural practices. Processes in agriculture, including planting planning, growth management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling, are shifting from experience-driven methods to digital and intelligent approaches. This paper systematically reviews applications of deep learning and computer vision in agricultural growth management over the past decade, categorizing them into four key areas: crop identification, grading and classification, disease monitoring, and weed detection. Additionally, we introduce classic methods and models in computer vision and deep learning, discussing approaches that utilize different types of visual information. Finally, we summarize current challenges and limitations of existing methods, providing insights for future research and promoting technological innovation in agriculture. Full article

Bruising in ‘Korla’ pears represents a prevalent phenomenon that leads to progressive fruit decay and substantial economic losses. The detection of early-stage bruising proves challenging due to the absence of visible external characteristics, and existing deep learning models have limitations in weak feature extraction under complex optical interference. To address the postharvest latent damage detection challenges in ‘Korla’ pears, this study proposes a collaborative detection framework integrating structured-illumination reflectance imaging (SIRI) with multi-order gated attention mechanisms. Initially, an SIRI optical system was constructed, employing 150 cycles·m−1 spatial frequency modulation and a three-phase demodulation algorithm to extract subtle interference signal variations, thereby generating RT (Relative Transmission) images with significantly enhanced contrast in subsurface damage regions. To improve the detection accuracy of latent damage areas, the MOGA-UNet model was developed with three key innovations: 1. Integrate the lightweight VGG16 encoder structure into the feature extraction network to improve computational efficiency while retaining details. 2. Add a multi-order gated aggregation module at the end of the encoder to realize the fusion of features at different scales through a special convolution method. 3. Embed the channel attention mechanism in the decoding stage to dynamically enhance the weight of feature channels related to damage. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves 94.38% mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) and 97.02% Dice coefficient on RT images, outperforming the baseline UNet model by 2.80% with superior segmentation accuracy and boundary localization capabilities compared with mainstream models. This approach provides an efficient and reliable technical solution for intelligent postharvest agricultural product sorting. Full article

This research analyzes the innovative development of carnauba wax coatings enriched with essential oils (EOs: lemon, orange, grapefruit, clove, oregano, and cinnamon) or fruit by-products (FBPs: avocado, tomato, carrot, orange, lemon, and grapefruit) to improve postharvest preservation of organic oranges and lemons. Six EOs and six FBPs were evaluated for total phenolic content (TPC) and in vitro antifungal activity against Penicillium digitatum. Based on results, grapefruit, oregano, and clove EOs were selected for lemons, while avocado, orange, and grapefruit FBPs were selected for oranges. An in vivo test at 20 °C for 15 days with carnauba wax coatings assessed antifungal performance. Clove EO and avocado FBP showed strong in vitro inhibition and consistent hyphal suppression (~100 and ~82%, respectively). In vivo, coatings with grapefruit EO and avocado FBP significantly reduced fungal decay and sporulation (~75%) in lemons and oranges, respectively. Coated fruits also retained weight losses by ~25% compared to uncoated ones. These findings suggest that phenolic-rich natural extracts, especially from agro-industrial residues like avocado peels, offer a promising and sustainable strategy for postharvest citrus disease control. Further studies should test coating effectiveness in large-scale trials under refrigeration combined with other preservation strategies. Full article

This study examined three innovative ‘light-converting films’ that convert green light (−23%) into red light (+8%; Red film), ultraviolet light (−80%) into blue light (+9%; Blue film), and green light (−5.7%) into red light (+4%; Pink film) but also ultraviolet light (−76%) into blue light (+5.6%; Pink film). These films were used for growing blueberry plants under cover under controlled tunnel conditions (27.3 ± 11.7 °C, 51.9 ± 21.6% RH). The use of Red film led to increases in the total plant biomass (+54.2%), and Red and Pink films enhanced the leaf thickness (+17.1% and +14.4%, respectively) as compared to the control (a transparent polyethylene film). No differences in the photosynthetic rate (Pn) were observed at the flowering stage, but a decrease (−25.9%) was observed in plants grown under the Pink film during the green fruit stage. The plants grown under Blue film boosted flower production, leading to +86.8% increase in the total yield. The Blue film improved the total phenolic content (+15.2%) in the fruit, and a +25.3% greater total antioxidant capacity was observed in fruit grown under Pink film. Freshly harvested blueberries were subjected to postharvest experiments (4 °C; in dark conditions; 90–95% RH). The results suggest the importance of Red film in enhancing plant biomass and Red and Blue films in improving fruit yield and maintaining nutraceutical postharvest quality in blueberry fruit. The consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables is essential for a healthy diet as they contain a diverse composition of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and bioactive compounds. However, cross-contamination during harvest and post-harvest poses a high risk of microbial contamination. Therefore, handling fruit and vegetables during processing and contact with wet equipment and utensil surfaces is an ideal environment for microbial contamination and foodborne illness. Nevertheless, less attention has been paid to some emerging pathogens that are now increasingly recognised as transmissible to humans through contaminated fruit and vegetables, such as Arcobacter and Cronobacter species in various products, which are the main risk in fruit and vegetables. Cronobacter and Arcobacter spp. are recognised food-safety hazards because they pose a risk of foodborne disease, especially in vulnerable groups such as newborns and immunocompromised individuals. Cronobacter spp. have been linked to severe infant conditions—notably meningitis and sepsis—most often traced to contaminated powdered infant formula. Although Arcobacter spp. have been less extensively studied, they have also been associated with foodborne disease, chiefly from dairy products and meat. With this in mind, this review provides an overview of the main chemical and physical sanitisation methods in terms of their ability to reduce the contamination of fresh fruit and vegetable products caused by two emerging pathogens: Arcobacter and Cronobacter. Emerging chemical (organic acid compounds, extracts, and essential oils) and physical methods (combination of UV-C with electrolysed water, ultrasound, and cold atmospheric plasma) offer innovative and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional approaches. These methods often utilise natural materials, less toxic solvents, and novel techniques, resulting in more sustainable processes compared with traditional methods that may use harsh chemicals and environmentally harmful processes. This review provides the fruit and vegetable industry with a general overview of possible decontamination alternatives to develop optimal and efficient processes that ensure food safety. Full article

The present study investigated the efficacy of edible coatings formulated with gellan gum and lemon peel extract (LPE) in preserving the postharvest quality of cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme). Selected fruits exhibiting uniform ripeness and free from defects were sanitized and coated with solutions containing different HAG/LAG (high- and low-acyl gellan gum) ratios, incorporating 4.0% (w/v) LPE. Physicochemical and physiological parameters, including soluble solids content, weight loss, pH, titratable acidity, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and ethylene production, skin redness (a*/b* ratio), and decay incidence, were systematically assessed under storage conditions of 25 °C and 70% relative humidity. HAG-coated fruits showed the lowest weight loss (1.08%), higher soluble solids (7.11 °Brix), and greater firmness (3.11 N/mm2) compared to uncoated controls. Moreover, they exhibited reduced oxygen consumption (0.06 mg·kg−1·h−1), ethylene production (3.10 mg·kg−1·h−1), and decay rate (2%). Redness was better preserved, and decay rates were substantially (p < 0.05) reduced throughout the storage period. These findings highlight the potential of HAG-based edible coatings enriched with LPE as an innovative postharvest technology to extend shelf life, maintain quality attributes, and reduce postharvest losses in cherry tomatoes. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is experiencing escalating climate variability, land degradation, and food insecurity, which threaten livelihoods and economic stability. Sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs), including climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, and agroecology, offer promising strategies to boost productivity while enhancing ecological stability. This review proposes that multidisciplinary integration of SAPs, encompassing agronomy, socioeconomics, and governance, is the most promising route to achieving climate-resilient food systems in SSA by 2030. Despite its proven benefits, the use of SAPs remains limited. This is largely because of financial constraints, weak institutional frameworks, and inadequate infrastructure. To address these challenges, this review evaluates the role of SAPs in mitigating climate risk, improving soil health, and enhancing food security. It also identifies systemic adoption barriers and examines the effectiveness of policy and financing frameworks. Drawing on evidence from across SSA, including Ethiopia’s agroforestry success and Senegal’s millet resilience, this review highlights how integrating sustainable practices with postharvest innovation and community-driven approaches can strengthen food systems. Ultimately, the findings underscore that weaving science, policy, and grassroots action is essential for building a resilient and food-secure SSA, particularly within the context of the 2025 global adaptation agenda. The global fish industry faces persistent challenges due to the inherent perishability of fish, driven by enzymatic autolysis, lipid oxidation, and microbial proliferation. Although numerous studies have characterized these individual spoilage pathways and evaluated discrete preservation techniques, practitioners still lack a unified, mechanism-based framework that links spoilage chemistry to targeted interventions. This gap prevents the rational selection and optimization of preservation methods. In this review, we first synthesize recent multi-omics and microbiological findings to delineate the molecular drivers of post-harvest fish spoilage. We then critically map a suite of preservation approaches—including low-temperature treatments (refrigeration, super-chilling, freezing), high-pressure processing, modified atmosphere packaging, nanoemulsion and essential-oil coatings, pulsed electric fields, and ozonation—onto the specific mechanisms they mitigate. By comparing efficacy metrics, practical constraints, and emerging innovations, our mechanism-driven roadmap clearly defines the problems we address and offers actionable guidance for developing more effective and sustainable fish preservation strategies.
