Digital signal processing (DSP) methods and artificial intelligence (AI) serve as a unifying platform across diverse research areas and educational courses based on analysis of signals acquired by appropriate sensors and their time-synchronized systems. Autonomous sensor systems having their own batteries, memories, and possibilities of wireless communication form the core of modern technological systems. The interconnection of sensors for data acquisition, methods for advanced analysis of signal features, and collaborative evaluation promotes both theoretical learning and practical problem solving in professional practice. This paper emphasizes a common mathematical foundation for the processing of data acquired by different sensor systems, and it presents the integration of DSP and AI, enabling the use of similar theoretical methods in different applications, including robotics, digital twins, neurology, augmented reality, and energy optimization. Through selected case studies, it shows how a combination of sensor technology for data acquisition and the use of similar computational methods, visualization, and real-world case studies strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration. Findings of this paper demonstrate how integrating AI with DSP supports innovative research and teaching strategies, redefines the field’s educational role in the digital era, and points to the development of new digital technologies. The accelerated expansion of advanced technologies—particularly artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, and interactive digital environments—is influencing contemporary media ecosystems and contributing to changes in educational practices. This study provides a systematic and descriptive bibliometric mapping of recent scientific production on artificial intelligence in education, algorithmic ethics, and digital inequality. A total of 229 Scopus-indexed documents published between 2021 and 2026 were analyzed using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to examine publication patterns, influential authors and sources, and the conceptual structure of the field. Results indicate a marked increase in research output since 2024, with an annual growth rate of 47.58%, an average of 8.68 citations per document, and an international co-authorship rate of 24.45%. These indicators reflect an expanding and increasingly collaborative research landscape, accompanied by a diversification of thematic priorities within the field. The analysis identifies five thematic clusters: (1) the technical foundations of AI and digital transformation; (2) intelligent and immersive learning environments; (3) personalized and adaptive learning systems; (4) AI literacy and pedagogical integration; and (5) ethical considerations, including algorithmic bias and educational robotics. The findings highlight the need for explicit justification of database selection, strengthened critical AI literacy, and context-sensitive strategies that address disparities in access, skills, and institutional capacity. Overall, this study offers a coherent overview of a research area that is currently expanding and undergoing conceptual reorganization, providing evidence-informed insights for future research, policy development, and the design of equitable AI-driven educational technologies. Professors, students, and researchers from universities around the world use software distributed under licenses for numerical simulation purposes, which requires a computer with considerable hardware capabilities. This implies a high cost of simulations in engineering applications that require dynamic modeling using numerical methods, particularly in robotics and nonlinear control. This article compares and analyzes the performance of a frugal simulation scheme based on the use of low-cost, free, and open-source technology, specifically a low-power, single-board minicomputer (Raspberry Pi) in conjunction with GNU-Octave software. The benchmark is a numerical simulation of trajectory tracking control in the joint space of a Selective Conformal Assembly Robot Arm (SCARA). To perform this task, a system of coupled nonlinear differential equations is solved in matrix form using a numerical method known as an ODE solver. This solution includes the control law and the dynamic system model derived from Euler–Lagrange formalism. The time complexity and accuracy are analyzed to compare the performance of the frugal simulation tool with that of a conventional simulation setup consisting of a personal computer and MATLABTM running the same simulation code. The analysis shows minimal deviations in the numerical solutions and reasonable time complexity. Moreover, the frugality score of this approach and the low acquisition cost of the simulation tool enable the creation of simulation laboratories at universities with limited budgets for education and research. Most African countries are acquiring new technologies to provide awareness and vocational training to trigger innovation in various areas, including manufacturing. However, the existing method that emphasizes least cost by bidders has been found to be deficient. This study conducts a literature review and identifies some CoBots based on the suitability of their properties to West Africa. A hybrid Multi-Criteria Decision-Making approach, comprising the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchical Process and Interval Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution, together combined as FAHP-I-TOPSIS, was selected. This method was modeled and tested as a case study where data were collected from eight Robotics experts from West African countries. The data were analyzed through pairwise comparison and ranking to arrive at the most suitable training CoBot out of five alternatives, and six criteria were considered. Robot (R3) was selected, which, on average, satisfies their priority for Program Flexibility and Economic Cost criteria, because the robot is moderately costly and flexible in programming, too. This paper introduces the overall design plan, development timeline, and preliminary progress of the Autonomous Pit Exploration System project. This project aims to develop an advanced multi-robot system for the efficient inspection of nuclear waste-storage tank pits. The project is structured into three phases: Phase 1 involves data collection and interface definition in collaboration with Hanford Site experts and university partners, focusing on tank riser geometry and hardware solutions. Phase 2 includes the selection of sensors and robot components, detailed mechanical design, and prototyping. Phase 3 integrates all components into a cohesive system managed by a master control package which also incorporates digital twin and surrogate models, and culminates in comprehensive testing and validation at a simulated tank pit at the Idaho National Laboratory. Additionally, the system’s communication design ensures coordinated operation through shared data, power, and control signals. For transportation and deployment, an electric vehicle (EV) is chosen to support the system for a full 10 h shift with better regulatory compliance for field deployment. A telescopic arm design is selected for its simple configuration and superior reach capability and controllability. Preliminary testing utilizes an educational robot to demonstrate the feasibility of splitting computational tasks between edge and cloud computers. Successful simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) tasks validate our distributed computing approach. More design considerations are also discussed, including radiation hardness assurance, SLAM performance, software transferability, and digital twinning strategies. Full article

Innovative technologies have been helping to improve comfort and safety at work in high-risk sectors for years. The study analysed the impact, along with an assessment of potential implementations (opportunities and limitations) of innovative technological solutions for improving occupational safety in two selected sectors of the economy: mining and construction. The technologies evaluated included unmanned aerial vehicles and inspection robots, the Internet of Things and sensors, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, innovative individual and collective protective equipment, and exoskeletons. Due to the extensive nature of the obtained materials, the research description has been divided into two articles (Part I and Part II). This article presents the first three technologies. After the scientific literature from the Scopus database was analysed, some research gaps that need to be filled were identified. In addition to the obvious benefits of increased occupational safety for workers, innovative technological solutions also offer employers several economic advantages that affect the industry’s sustainability. Innovative technologies are playing an increasingly important role in improving safety in mining and construction. However, further integration and overcoming implementation barriers, such as the need for changes in education, are needed to realise their full potential. Full article

Increased food production demands, labor shortages, and environmental concerns are driving the need for innovative agricultural technologies. However, effective adoption depends critically on aligning robot innovations with the needs of farmers. This paper examines the alignment between the needs of farmers and the robotic systems used in row crop farming. We review current commercial agricultural robots and research, and map these to the needs of farmers, as expressed in the literature, to identify the key issues holding back large-scale adoption. From initial pool of 184 research articles, 19 survey articles, and 82 commercial robotic solutions, we selected 38 peer-reviewed academic studies, 12 survey articles, and 18 commercially available robots for in-depth review and analysis for this study. We identify the key challenges faced by farmers and map them directly to the current and emerging capabilities of agricultural robots. We supplement the data gathered from the literature review of surveys and case studies with in-depth interviews with nine farmers to obtain deeper insights into the needs and day-to-day operations. Farmers reported mixed reactions to current technologies, acknowledging efficiency improvements but highlighting barriers such as capital costs, technical complexity, and inadequate support systems. There is a notable demand for technologies for improved plant health monitoring, soil condition assessment, and enhanced climate resilience. We then review state-of-the-art robotic solutions for row crop farming and map these technological capabilities to the farmers’ needs. Only technologies with field validation or operational deployment are included, to ensure practical relevance. These mappings generate insights that underscore the need for lightweight and modular robot technologies that can be adapted to diverse farming practices, as well as the need for farmers’ education and simpler interfaces to robotic operations and data analysis that are actionable for farmers. We conclude with recommendations for future research, emphasizing the importance of co-creation with the farming community to ensure the adoption and sustained use of agricultural robotic solutions. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes ubiquitous across various fields, understanding people’s acceptance and trust in AI systems becomes essential. This review aims to identify quantitative measures used to measure trust in AI and the associated studied elements. Following the PRISMA guidelines, three databases were consulted, selecting articles published before December 2023. Ultimately, 45 articles out of 1283 were selected. Articles were included if they were peer-reviewed journal publications in English reporting empirical studies measuring trust in AI systems with multi-item questionnaires. Studies were analyzed through the lenses of cognitive and affective trust. We investigated trust definitions, questionnaires employed, types of AI systems, and trust-related constructs. Results reveal diverse trust conceptualizations and measurements. In addition, the studies covered a wide range of AI system types, including virtual assistants, content detection tools, chatbots, medical AI, robots, and educational AI. Overall, the studies show compatibility of cognitive or affective trust focus between theorization, items, experimental stimuli, and level of anthropomorphism of the systems. The review underlines the need to adapt measurement of trust in the specific characteristics of human–AI interaction, accounting for both the cognitive and affective sides. Trust definitions and measurement could be chosen depending also on the level of anthropomorphism of the systems and the context of application. Full article

Gamification and game-based learning provide the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills on a given subject in a practical and interactive way. They are an innovative teaching methodology that could be used for competence acquisition in a variety of fields. This study focuses on two domains: technology (including robotics) and care. This study evaluates the usability of RobotCareMaker®, a board game designed to teach care robotics, a branch of robotics oriented towards the study of human care. RobotCareMaker® consists of 106 elements. The playing cards are the engine of the game and the element of interaction between players. A convenience sample was selected. Usability was evaluated by the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire modified for the game, and three questions about the game experience were used. Using a modified SUS questionnaire, 21 participants rated it with an excellent score of 80.36. Over 90% found the instructions clear and error-free. RobotCareMaker® allows teachers, professionals, and nursing students to integrate curricular competencies in novel topics such as care robotics. The result suggests that RobotCareMaker® enhances learning in assistive robotics, improving competencies in education and healthcare. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence in interventional radiology is an emerging field with transformative potential, aiming to make a great contribution to the health domain. This overview of reviews seeks to identify prevailing themes, opportunities, challenges, and recommendations related to the process of integration. Utilizing a standardized checklist and quality control procedures, this review examines recent advancements in, and future implications of, this domain. In total, 27 review studies were selected through the systematic process. Based on the overview, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in interventional radiology (IR) presents significant opportunities to enhance precision, efficiency, and personalization of procedures. AI automates tasks like catheter manipulation and needle placement, improving accuracy and reducing variability. It also integrates multiple imaging modalities, optimizing treatment planning and outcomes. AI aids intra-procedural guidance with advanced needle tracking and real-time image fusion. Robotics and automation in IR are advancing, though full autonomy in AI-guided systems has not been achieved. Despite these advancements, the integration of AI in IR is complex, involving imaging systems, robotics, and other technologies. This complexity requires a comprehensive certification and integration process. The role of regulatory bodies, scientific societies, and clinicians is essential to address these challenges. Standardized guidelines, clinician education, and careful AI assessment are necessary for safe integration. The future of AI in IR depends on developing standardized guidelines for medical devices and AI applications. Collaboration between certifying bodies, scientific societies, and legislative entities, as seen in the EU AI Act, will be crucial to tackling AI-specific challenges. Focusing on transparency, data governance, human oversight, and post-market monitoring will ensure AI integration in IR proceeds with safeguards, benefiting patient outcomes and advancing the field. Background and Objectives: Diabetes is a rapidly increasing global health challenge compounded by a critical shortage of diabetes care and education specialists. Robot-assisted diabetes care offers a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional methods such as training and dispatching human experts. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using robots for diabetes care consultations by examining their ability to elicit meaningful patient feedback, identify therapeutic issues, and assess their potential as substitutes for human specialists. Materials and Methods: A robot-assisted consultation programme was developed by selecting an appropriate robot, designing the programme content, and tailoring back-channel communication elements. Experienced diabetes care nurses operated the robot during the consultations. Patient feedback was collected through a 17-item questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale (evaluating functionality, impressions, and effects). Additionally, a five-item questionnaire was used to assess whether the programme helped patients reflect on the key therapeutic domains of diabetes knowledge, diet, exercise, medications, and blood glucose control. Results: This study included 32 participants (22 males; mean age, 69.7 ± 12.6 years; mean HbA1c, 7.2 ± 1.0%). None of the participants reported any discomfort during the consultation. Sixteen of the seventeen feedback items scored above the median of 3, as did all five therapeutic reflection items. The interview content analysis revealed the programme’s ability to differentiate patients facing issues in treatment compliance from those effectively managing their condition. Robots can elicit valuable patient narratives like human specialists. Conclusions: The results of this pilot study support the feasibility of robot-assisted diabetes care to assist human experts. Future research should explore the programme’s application with healthcare professionals with limited experience in diabetes care, further demonstrating its scalability and utility in diverse healthcare settings. This study focuses on selecting a suitable 3D printer and defining experimental methods to gather the necessary data for determining the optimal filament material for printing components of the VEX GO and VEX IQ robotic kits. The aim is to obtain the required data to identify an appropriate filament material and set 3D printing parameters to achieve the desired mechanical properties of the parts while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Another key objective is achieving optimal operational functionality, ensuring the required part performance with minimal printing costs. It is desirable for the modeled and printed parts to exhibit the required mechanical properties while maintaining economic efficiency. Another crucial aspect is achieving optimal functionality of the produced parts with minimal printing costs. This will be assessed by analyzing the impact of key 3D printing technology parameters, focusing in this research phase on material selection. The criteria for selecting filament materials include ease of printability under the conditions of primary and secondary schools, simplicity of printing, minimal need for post-processing, and adequate mechanical properties verified through experimental measurements and destructive tests on original parts from VEX GO and VEX IQ kits. The study analyzed various filaments regarding their mechanical properties, printability, and cost-effectiveness. The most significant practical contribution of this study is selecting a suitable filament material tested through a set of destructive tests, emphasizing maintaining the mechanical properties required for the real-life application of the parts. This includes repetitive assembly and disassembly of various robotic model constructions and their activation for demonstration purposes and applications of STEM/STEAM/STREAM methods in the educational process to achieve the properties of original components. Additionally, the study aims to set up 3D printing such that even a beginner-level operator, such as a primary or secondary school student under the supervision of their teacher or a teacher with minimal knowledge and experience in 3D printing, can successfully execute it. Further ongoing research focuses on evaluating the effects of characteristic 3D printing parameters, such as infill and perimeter, on the properties of 3D-printed parts through additional measurements and analyses. Computational thinking (CT) currently has been mainly explored using programming robots and conducted in K12 education. In early childhood education, arts have a significant place in children’s learning, expression and cognitive development. Specifically, creating pop-up storybooks is a child-friendly activity. Our study aimed to explore the combination of CT and art, and to develop talented children’s CT abilities through a multimodal literacies educational approach, which referred to using different skills (i.e., writing, drawing, making, and storytelling) in the art activity. A total of 12 talented children were selected to participate in a pop-up storybook production workshop using a convenience sampling method. We adopted an observation method to capture talented children’s CT behaviors, generating a total of 180 min of activity videos and collecting fieldnotes and the children’s worksheets and artworks for the data analysis. Based on a content analysis, we found that talented children enhanced their CT development in multiple modes and practiced seven CT skills. In conclusion, our study emphasizes the importance of art in children’s education and provides new insights for subsequent research on children’s CT education. Full article

Multi-user collaborative robotic simulation has great potential for applications in industry and education. Unity is a powerful software for simulation and online multi-user experience, which can be enhanced with third-party mathematical analysis and multiplayer servers. Unity can become a much more capable and user-friendly robotic simulation package through integration with other software. These include MATLAB for computations and the Photon Unity Engine (PUN) for online multi-user capabilities. This study developed a flexible robotic simulation framework that can be adapted to different scenarios for industrial and educational applications. Several simulation scenarios were developed to identify the most efficient data communication methods between MATLAB and Unity. TCP/IP, Shared Memory, Firebase, and MQTT, were selected to assess their performance and interaction with data in Unity and MATLAB. Next, an independent PUN application was created. Both components were integrated into the simulator for evaluation and performance optimization. The performance of this simulation framework was assessed through two case studies. The results demonstrated that the integrated framework is viable, efficient, and flexible for robotic simulation and digital twins. Future research will expand the framework by adding diverse functionalities to provide users with a better interface, enhancing its performance, and integrating additional software packages. Assistive robotic platforms have recently gained popularity in various healthcare applications, and their use has expanded to social settings such as education, tourism, and manufacturing. These social robots, often in the form of bio-inspired humanoid systems, provide significant psychological and physiological benefits through one-on-one interactions. To optimize the interaction between social robotic platforms and humans, it is crucial for these robots to identify and mimic human motions in real time. This research presents a motion prediction model developed using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to efficiently determine the type of motions at the initial state. Once identified, the corresponding reactions of the robots are executed by moving their joints along specific trajectories derived through temporal alignment and stored in a pre-selected motion library. In this study, we developed a multi-axial robotic arm integrated with a motion identification model to interact with humans by emulating their movements. The robotic arm follows pre-selected trajectories for corresponding interactions, which are generated based on identified human motions. To address the nonlinearities and cross-coupled dynamics of the robotic system, we applied a control strategy for precise motion tracking. This integrated system ensures that the robotic arm can achieve adequate controlled outcomes, thus validating the feasibility of such an interactive robotic system in providing effective bio-inspired motion emulation.
