This study explores the visible-light-driven photolysis of Ferrioxalate complexes for the degradation of Toluidine Blue (TB), a persistent phenothiazine dye, using a 1 L recirculating batch-loop photoreactor. The reactor system incorporated two tubular photochemical units (35 cm × 3 cm each) in series: the first equipped with an immersed blue fluorescent lamp (12 W, 30 cm-tube), and the second with dual external blue LED lamps (18 W total, 30 cm) encasing a double-walled glass cell. Continuous flow between the units was maintained via a peristaltic pump. Experimental investigations were used to evaluate the effects of key parameters such as Fe(III) and oxalate concentrations, initial TB load, pH, light source, flow rate, ligand type, dissolved gas type, external H2O2 addition, and the presence of various inorganic ions. The results demonstrate efficient dye degradation, with ~75% TB removal within 1 h under combined fluorescent and LED irradiation, where each reactor contributing comparably. The optimal performance was achieved at pH 4, with a 10 oxalate-to-Fe(III) molar ratio (1 mM:0.1 mM) and a flow rate of 25 mL s−1. Among various ligands tested (oxalate, acetate, citrate, EDTA), oxalate proved to be the most effective. The presence and type of anions significantly influenced degradation efficiency due to their potential scavenging effects. Although the process achieved high dye removal, TOC analysis indicated only moderate mineralization, suggesting the accumulation of non-colored intermediates. External H2O2 addition moderately improved TOC removal, likely due to enhanced hydroxyl radical generation via the Fenton mechanism. These findings highlight the promise of Ferrioxalate-based photochemical systems under visible light for dye removal, while also emphasizing the need for further research into by-product identification, mineralization enhancement, and toxicity reduction to ensure safe effluent discharge. Background/Aim: Third molar impaction with the consequent root resorption of second molars often creates complexities in treatment planning and execution. In the past, the root canal treatment (RCT) of second molars was required in these cases to avoid pulp necrosis and infection. The aim of this paper is to report a surgical/retrograde approach for the maintenance of pulp vitality, proposed as retrograde vital pulp treatment (rVPT), in cases of asymptomatic or reversibly affected teeth with root resorptions caused by impacted adjacent teeth. Methods: A case report on the rVPT of two upper second molars with root resorption due to third molar impaction is presented. The chief complaint of the patient was a slight pain during bite involving the upper second molars. Heat and cold sensitivity tests were performed, suggesting a healthy pulp status. A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was performed to aid the diagnosis and treatment planning, showing bilateral upper third molar impaction and both distal roots of the upper second molars affected by external root resorption (ERR). In both cases, the third molar was surgically extracted, the surface of the root with ERR was smoothened and rVPT was carried out by performing a 3 mm retrograde preparation of the root canal and its retrograde sealing using a hydraulic calcium silicate-based cement (hCSCs). Results: Heat and cold sensitivity tests were performed 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after the treatment. The patient reported no pain, and the pulp sensitivity was maintained in all follow-up periods. A CBCT scan was performed 24 months after the treatment, reporting a complete perirradicular endogenous bone apposition. Conclusions: Based on the successful clinical and radiographic outcomes observed in the present case after two years of follow-up, rVPT is proposed for the maintenance of pulp vitality in cases of asymptomatic or reversibly affected teeth with ERR caused by impacted adjacent teeth. Aligners represent a therapeutic option in orthodontics, offering advantages such as aesthetics, comfort, and individualized prescriptions for each patient. However, the predictability of maxillary expansion is subject to variability. The objective of this article is to evaluate the efficacy and predictability of aligners in maxillary expansion. One hundred adult patients were included in this study, divided into four groups, each assigned to a different brand of clear aligners: Angel Aligners, Invisalign, Spark, or HeySmile. Digital models were obtained at three stages: initial STL (T1), prediction (T2), and final (T3) (before the first refinement). The models were measured to obtain linear distances between canines, first bicuspids, second bicuspids, and first molars. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 28.0. The best predictability was obtained in the lower arch (68.900%) for second bicuspids, while the worst accuracy was for canines (39.290% in the upper arch using Invisalign). Angel aligner showed the highest percentage of predictability (60.002%) among the evaluated brands, followed by HeySmile (59.895%), Spark (59.275%), and Invisalign (57.153%). The results show that clear aligners are an effective treatment for transverse movements in both arches. However, further research is needed to improve predictability. Full article

Anoplophora glabripennis, is one of the most devastating wood borers of many broad leaf trees. Our previous results indicated that antennae of A. glabripennis showed electroantennogram (EAG) responses to several host plant volatiles. However, the quantities of active compounds necessary to trigger an EAG response remains unclear. To relate EAG responses with quantities of active molecules, we quantified the level of molecular triggering in the EAG response of A. glabripennis by a series of procedures. First, we used the EAG apparatus to measure EAG responses of A. glabripennis to five concentrations of eight chemicals and obtained dose–response curves. Second, volatiles released after blowing air over filter paper loaded with volatiles for different numbers of times (purging) were collected by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and quantified by gas chromatography (GC), so we obtained the quantity of chemical released from each purge; the minimum number of molecules in each purge in the EAG was calculated by the molar mass for different compounds. For instance, the number of molecules of (Z)-3-hexenol reaching the female antennal segment in EAG was 8.68 × 108 at 0.01 ng/μL concentration, and 1.39 × 105 at 0.01 mV potential value. Finally, by comparing sensilla numbers on tested antennal segments with the entire antennae, the minimum number of molecules, or molecular flow, of tested compounds required to elicit an electrophysiological response from two antennae of ALB could be estimated either at a minimum concentration (2.49 × 108 at 0.01 ng/μL concentration of (Z)-3-Hexenol, for female) or at a minimum potentiometric response value (3.99 × 104 at 0.01 mV potential value). The quantification of the short-range order (SRO) of glassy materials has remained an open challenge over the years. In particular, in borate glasses, this task is further complicated by the change in the B coordination number from 3 to 4 and by the formation of superstructural units. Nevertheless, in two recent articles from our group, the SRO structure of bismuth (xBi2O3-(1-x)B2O3) and zinc (xZnO-(1-x)B2O3) borate glasses was completely resolved by two independent methods. The first one, for Bi-borates, involved the analysis of infrared absorption coefficient spectra into Gaussian component bands, whereas the second one, for Zn-borates, involved the application of the short-range order configuration model (SROC), an extension of the well-known lever rule. In this article, we extend the application of the SROC model in bismuth borate glasses into the range where Bi cations were found to act predominantly as modifiers, i.e., 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.40. Our extension results in a modification of the originally proposed SROC model by adding an additional node and by defining the prerequisites for any augmented version of the model. The molar fractions of the borate units for the calculated SRO structure, in a continuous way throughout the range investigated, are in excellent agreement with the existing literature data. Moreover, the research highlights how the onset of disproportionation reactions between borate units can be handled in the framework of the introduced augmented short-range order configuration model, ASROC. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in promoting wound healing after the surgical removal of inferior third molars. Methods: Patients in need of unilateral mandibular third molar extraction were randomly assigned to either a test or control group before surgery. During the test, a photoactive substance activated with laser light (20 mW, 660 nm) was applied to the post-extraction site for 60 s before suturing to promote healing and disinfection. The control group did not receive any laser applications after tooth removal. The probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index (PI), gingival recession (REC), and levels of clinical attachment loss (CAL) before surgery (T0), 14 days after surgery (T1), and after 3 months after surgery (T2) were evaluated for the adjacent second molar. Post-operative swelling, pain (VAS index), the number of painkillers taken, alveolar probing, and Landry’s healing index were recorded at T1. Results: Sixty-five patients, aged between 14 and 39 years, were assigned randomly to test (n = 32) or control (n = 33) groups. Five dropouts occurred. Post-operative swelling and the VAS index were significantly lower in the test group compared to the control (p = 0.002 and p = 0.04, respectively). All periodontal indexes except recession significantly worsened at T1 in both groups. After three months, a significant improvement for PPD, CAL, and PI was recorded in the test group compared to the control (p = 0.001). Conclusions: According to the results of this study, the use of aPDT seems to have a beneficial effect on post-operative swelling and pain, as well as the plaque index, in the short-term follow-up. Background/Objectives: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) represents a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders affecting the quality and quantity of dental enamel, making clinical diagnosis challenging. This study aimed to identify genetic variants in Slovenian patients with non-syndromic AI and to evaluate enamel morphology using radiographic parameters. Methods: Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed on 24 AI patients and their families. Panoramic radiographs (OPTs) were analyzed using Fiji ImageJ to assess crown dimensions, enamel angle (EA), dentine angle (DA), and enamel–dentine mineralization ratio (EDMR) in lower second molar buds, compared to matched controls (n = 24). Two observers independently assessed measurements, and non-parametric tests compared EA, DA, and EDMR in patients with and without disease-causing variants (DCVs). Statistical models, including bootstrap-validated random forest and logistic regression, assessed variable influences. Results: DCVs were identified in ENAM (40% of families), AMELX (15%), and MMP20 (10%), including four novel variants. AI patients showed significant enamel deviations with high reproducibility, particularly in hypomineralized and hypoplastic regions. DA and EDMR showed significant correlations with DCVs (p < 0.01). A bootstrap-validated random forest model yielded a 90% (84.0–98.0%) AUC-estimated predictive power. Conclusions: These findings highlight a novel and reproducible radiographic approach for detecting developmental enamel defects in AI and support its diagnostic potential. Full article

Background/Objectives: Among the paranasal sinuses, the maxillary antrum holds unique clinical relevance due to its proximity to the alveolar process of the maxilla, which houses the teeth. This study aimed to evaluate the position of the root apices of the maxillary canines and posterior teeth relative to the maxillary sinus floor in Romanian subjects. Methods: Data for the study were retrospectively obtained from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The evaluation considered the pattern of proximity to the sinus floor for each tooth type, comparisons of the sinus relationships of teeth within the same dental hemiarch, as well as those of homologous teeth, and variation in root-to-sinus distance in relation to sex and age. Nonparametric tests were used for statistical analysis, and multiple comparisons were performed using Bonferroni post hoc correction. Results: The study included 70 individuals aged 20 to 60 years. The distance to the sinus floor decreased progressively from the first premolar to the second molar, with median values of 3.68 mm (first premolar), 1.45 mm (second premolar), 0.50 mm (first molar), and 0.34 mm (second molar) (p < 0.01). Stronger correlations were observed between adjacent teeth than between non-adjacent ones. The distances to the sinus floor were greater on the right side compared to the left; however, these differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05 for all teeth). Concordance between left and right dental hemiarches regarding the closest tooth to the sinus floor was found in 70% of cases (n = 49), most frequently involving the second molars (n = 38; 54.3%). On average, the distance from the sinus floor was smaller in males compared to females, with statistically significant differences observed only for the second molar. Increased age was associated with a greater distance to the sinus floor. Conclusions: Of all the teeth investigated, the second molar showed the highest combined prevalence of penetrating and tangential relationships with the maxillary sinus. At the dental hemiarch level, the second molar was most frequently the closest tooth to the sinus floor, and in the majority of cases, at least one posterior tooth was located within 0.3 mm. Accurate preoperative assessment of tooth position relative to the sinus floor is essential when performing non-surgical or surgical root canal therapy and extractions of maxillary molars and premolars. CBCT provides essential three-dimensional imaging that improves diagnostic precision and supports safer treatment planning for procedures involving the posterior maxilla. Full article

Objective: To assess radiographic changes in the alveolar bone on the distal aspect of the second molars (2Ms) over time, while impacted third molars (ITMs) remain present across two timepoints. Methods: This retrospective observational study aimed to assess radiographic changes between two timepoints (T0 and T1). Both Orthopantomogram (OPG) and Periapical (PA) X-rays were utilized, with three measurements taken on the distal surface of 2Ms using EMAGO 6.1 software. Statistical significance was defined as a p-value < 0.05. Results: A total of 51 patients met the inclusion criteria, with a mean age of 45 years (SD ± 13). Sixty-eight second molars were assessed at baseline (T0) and follow-up (T1), with a mean interval of 20 months (SEM ± 62 days). No significant changes were found in vertical, oblique, or angular bone levels between T0 and T1. Gender significantly affected the cementoenamel junction (CEJ)–base of defect (BD) measurements (p = 0.022) and defect angles at T0 (p = 0.048), but not at the adjusted T1 (p = 0.292). Other variables, including medical history, smoking, and ITM angulation, showed no influence. Patient age was borderline significant in relation to intrabony defect angle (p = 0.047). Conclusions: Considering its limitations, this analysis does not provide evidence to support the hypothesis that prophylactic extraction of ITMs yields significant bone-sparing benefits. Furthermore, it does not establish that prolonged retention of ITMs consistently results in short-term bone alterations in adjacent 2Ms. Consequently, further research is warranted to more accurately assess the medium- to long-term implications of ITM retention on the bone levels of 2Ms. Full article

The purpose of this systematic review is to analyze the dentoalveolar changes resulting from the use of clear aligners in the treatment of transverse maxillary deficiency among growing children in the mixed dentition stage. An electronic literature search was carried out using the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science. The review protocol was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database. Eligible studies included children aged 6 to 12 years in the mixed dentition period, presenting with erupted maxillary first molars and a transverse deficiency of the maxilla, and undergoing treatment with Invisalign® First aligners. The review encompassed various study types including retrospective and prospective designs, randomized controlled trials, preliminary studies, and case series. Two independent reviewers conducted the data extraction process. The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Except for studies by Bruni et al., the risk of bias in selected articles was visually summarized in a traffic light plot using the robvis tool, following the ROBINS-I methodology. For the studies by Bruni et al., a separate visual representation was created using robvis with the RoB2 evaluation framework, prepared by the authors S.E.I. and C.A. In total, 14 studies were included in the final synthesis, selected from 265 records retrieved through electronic searches and an additional 36 identified via manual screening. Several parameters were considered in order to assess dentoalveolar expansion: intercanine width, intercanine transpalatal width, intercanine dentoalveolar width, first and second interdeciduous molar width, first and second interpremolar width, first and second interdeciduous molar transpalatal width, first intermolar width, first intermolar mesial, distal, and transpalatal width, molar inclination, arch depth, and arch perimeter, and intermolar dentoalveolar width. An improvement was recorded in all parameters. The studies comparing treatment with Invisalign® First clear aligners and rapid maxillary expander highlighted that these both determined statistically significant differences compared to the natural growth group. Treatment with Invisalign® First in mixed dentition proved to be very effective for dentoalveolar expansion of the maxillary arch, with good control of the crown angulation of the upper first molar and an increase in the palatal area similar to RME, compared to pre-treatment or to the natural growth group. It could represent an effective and comfortable alternative to the traditional rapid maxillary expander treatment. However, further high-quality studies are required to support our current observations and verifying the stability of treatment outcomes on a long-term basis. Full article

Background/Objectives: Currently, clear aligners are preferred to conventional appliances, especially among adult patients. However, the use of aligners for treating maxillary constriction is still debated in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess maxillary dentoalveolar expansion following clear aligner therapy in adults using CBCT scans. Methods: The study sample encompassed 50 non-growing patients (27 females and 23 males) aged 20 to 42 undergoing clear aligner orthodontics without dental extractions or auxiliaries. Transverse linear distances were measured on initial and final CBCTs and, subsequently, analysed through paired t-test and ANOVA. We considered alveolar bone measurements and interdental widths measured at the buccal apices and cusps from canines to second molars. Results: The buccal alveolar ridge width showed the greatest expansion (1.01 ± 0.38 mm), followed by the palatal alveolar ridge and maxillary alveolar bone. Statistically significant improvements were observed for all interdental measurements. The most considerable changes occurred in the interpremolar cusp distances, while the least changes were seen in the intermolar apex distances. At the cusp level, the average interpremolar widths increased by 3.44 ± 0.22 mm for the first premolars and 3.14 ± 0.27 mm for the second ones. Conclusions: Clear aligner treatment can effectively manage a constricted maxillary arch. We found significant changes in the maxillary alveolar bone. Both inter-apex and inter-cusp widths increased in all teeth, with the highest values in the premolars. Moreover, the increases in interdental distances at both apex and cusp levels were related to tooth position. Full article

Background/Objectives: Periodontal and implant therapies frequently require soft tissue augmentation for optimal outcomes. As the hard palate serves as the primary donor site, this study evaluated palatal masticatory mucosa thickness variations in a Saudi population of the Eastern Province using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at a teaching dental hospital, providing site-specific data for clinical applications. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 215 CBCT scans from systemically healthy, non-smoking adults (>18 years) was conducted at the University Dental Hospital. Measurements were taken at 12 standardized sites (3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm from the cementoenamel junction) across maxillary canines, premolars, and first molars. Statistical analysis included Friedman’s test and t-tests. Results: Significant site variations were observed, with the second premolar region showing greatest thickness (3.48 ± 0.80 mm at 9 mm) and the first molar region the lowest (1.88 ± 0.63 mm at 3 mm) (p < 0.001). Mucosal thickness generally increased coronally to apically (p < 0.001). Age >35 years correlated with significantly thicker mucosa (p < 0.05), while no statistically significant gender-based differences were observed for all sites (p > 0.05). Conclusions: CBCT provides reliable, non-invasive assessment of palatal mucosa thickness. These findings offer region-specific data for consideration in periodontal and implant procedures involving soft tissue grafting. Full article

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men, with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and bone metastases representing a critical clinical challenge. Although radium-223 (Ra-223) is approved for treating mCRPC with bone metastases, its efficacy remains limited, necessitating the development of more effective therapies. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of 177Lu-PSMA-617, a PSMA-targeted radiopharmaceutical, in a murine model of prostate cancer bone metastases. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically evaluate 177Lu-PSMA-617 in an orthotopic bone metastatic prostate cancer model, providing a clinically relevant preclinical platform to assess both imaging and therapeutic performance. We conducted comprehensive preclinical evaluations, including synthesis, stability analysis, cell binding assays, nuclear imaging, in vivo biodistribution, pharmacokinetics, and antitumor efficacy. The synthesis of 177Lu-PSMA-617 demonstrated high radiochemical yield (99.2%), molar activity (25.5 GBq/μmol), and purity (>98%), indicating high product quality. Stability studies confirmed minimal release of free Lutetium-177, maintaining the compound’s integrity under physiological conditions. In vitro assays showed selective binding and internalization in PSMA-positive LNCaP prostate cancer cells, with negligible uptake in PSMA-negative PC-3 cells. In vivo biodistribution studies demonstrated efficient tumor targeting, with peak uptake in LNCaP tumors (23.31 ± 0.94 %IA/g) at 4 h post-injection. The radiopharmaceutical exhibited favorable pharmacokinetics, with high tumor-to-background ratios (tumor-to-blood, 434.4; tumor-to-muscle, 857.4). Therapeutic efficacy was confirmed by significant survival extension in treated mice (30.7% for 37 MBq and 53.8% for 111 MBq), with median survival times of 34 and 40 days, respectively, compared to 26 days in the control group. Radiation dosimetry analysis indicated a favorable safety profile with a calculated effective dose of 0.127 mSv/MBq. These findings highlight the novelty and translational relevance of using 177Lu-PSMA-617 in a clinically relevant bone metastasis model, reinforcing its potential as a dual-purpose agent for both targeted therapy and molecular imaging in advanced prostate cancer. Background/Objectives: Recently, a novel magnetic attachment system was introduced to improve performance. Using the same technology, a new ultra-thin magnetic attachment (UTMA) was possible to produce. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a magnet-retained telescopic partial denture (MTPD) utilizing the new UTMA. Methods: This in vitro study was performed using a titanium master model representing prepared lower first-premolar and second-molar abutment teeth. The inner crowns (ICs) (h: 4 mm, 4° taper) and four-unit MTPDs were fabricated via computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) using zirconia. A Ø4 mm UTMA system (magnet assembly and keeper thickness: 0.6 mm and 0.4 mm, respectively) was cemented into the MTPD and the ICs using dual-cure resin cement. A load of 100 N was applied along with 10,000 insertion–removal cycles. The MTPD retentive force was measured before and after every set of 1000 cycles. Stability tests and surface morphology evaluations were conducted before and after cycling. A paired t-test (α = 0.05) was used to observe statistical differences. Results: The average retentive force of the MTPD was 6.86 ± 0.63 N and did not change significantly (p > 0.05) following the load cycles (6.66 ± 0.79 N). The MTPD demonstrated adequate stability under the occlusal load. Minimal deformations were observed on the magnet assemblies, keepers, ICs, and MTPD surfaces after the load tests. Conclusions: Considering the limitations of this study, an MTPD utilizing novel UTMAs fabricated through a digital workflow demonstrated adequate retentive force, stability, and durability for clinical use. This study evaluated the effects of different clear aligner (CA) designs on forces and moments during maxillary second molar distalization. Four designs were tested: attachment only (group 1), neither attachment nor enhanced structure (group 2), a combination of attachment and enhanced structure (group 3), and enhanced structure only (group 4). CAs were fabricated from thermoformed polyethylene terephthalate glycol with 30 CAs per group. Forces and moments were measured using a multi-axis transducer as the molars were distally displaced by 0.25 mm. All groups experienced buccodistal and intrusive forces. Group 3 showed the highest distalizing force (Fy = 2.51 ± 0.37 N) and intrusive force (Fz = −2.04 ± 0.48 N) and also the largest rotational moment (Mz = 3.89 ± 0.71 Nmm). Groups 3 and 4 (with enhanced structures) demonstrated significant intrusive forces (p < 0.05). Most groups exhibited mesiodistal angulation, lingual inclination, and distal rotational moments. Group 2 had the lowest moment-to-force ratio (Mx/Fy = 3.27 ± 0.44 mm), indicating inefficient bodily movement. Group 3 demonstrated significantly greater moments across all axes compared to other groups. The results indicate that designs incorporating enhanced structures with attachments increase CA stiffness and applied forces/moments, enhancing distalization efficiency while minimizing vertical side effects. This suggests that, clinically, reinforced CAs can serve as a simple yet effective modification to existing protocols in Class II orthodontic cases, enabling more efficient molar distalization without requiring complete appliance redesign or additional fabrication and allowing easy adaptation to individual treatment needs.
