The article provides a comprehensive review of empirical studies on consumer attitudes, motivations, and behaviors in the functional food market. The main objective of this study is to identify groups of determinants and to update and systematize current knowledge on the influence of various factors on consumer purchasing decisions in this market. Based on an analysis of international research published between 2004 and 2025, four key groups of determinants were identified: (1) health- and trust-related factors, (2) cognitive and psychological factors, (3) perceptual and product-related factors, and (4) socio-demographic and segmentation factors. The analysis confirms that purchasing decisions in this product category are complex and multidimensional. They result from the interaction between rational factors (health-related and cognitive) and emotional-symbolic factors (psychological and sensory). The strongest predictors of functional food acceptance include perceived health benefits, trust in producers and information sources, sensory attractiveness, and product naturalness. Socio-demographic characteristics, such as age, education level, and income, further differentiate purchasing intentions and behaviors. Overall, the findings highlight the need for further comparative and cross-cultural research, as cultural and economic conditions may significantly shape consumer decisions across markets. The results obtained have both theoretical and practical implications. They contribute to a better understanding of consumer decision-making processes and emphasize the importance of promoting health awareness. Full article

The growing digitalization of supply chains and increasing sustainability requirements create the need for structured tools that assess organizational readiness for Cognitive Twin (CT) adoption. However, existing digital twin and sustainability maturity models rarely integrate technological architecture, governance, and circularity within a unified framework. To address this gap, the study proposes the Supply Chain Twin Sustainability–Cognitive Maturity Model (SCT-SCMM), a novel framework that explicitly integrates governance structures, sustainability objectives, and a hierarchical system architecture into the assessment of Cognitive Twin readiness. Unlike existing models, the proposed framework captures the interdependencies between technological capabilities, decision intelligence, and governance mechanisms across multiple system layers, providing a systemic perspective on sustainable digital transformation. The framework structures organizational readiness through five interdependent layers: Physical, Control, Communication, Decision-making, and Governance, and defines staged maturity levels reflecting progression toward sustainable cognitive autonomy. This layered architecture enables the simultaneous evaluation of operational automation, digital intelligence, and institutional governance as co-evolving dimensions of Cognitive Twin adoption. The model was developed through a structured literature review and operationalized using a hybrid multi-criteria and fuzzy-based evaluation approach, enabling the evaluation of complex socio-technical systems under uncertainty. The framework was applied in an automated product-to-human warehouse case study to evaluate technological, sustainability, and governance readiness. The results demonstrate the model’s ability to identify maturity gaps, reveal inter-layer dependencies, and prioritize transformation pathways toward more resilient and circular logistics systems. By integrating governance, sustainability, and system architecture into a single maturity model, SCT-SCMM extends existing digital twin maturity approaches and provides a transparent decision-support tool for guiding staged Cognitive Twin adoption in next-generation sustainable supply chains. Societal expectations for serious breaches of health and safety legislation that lead to loss of life have changed. The Australian harmonized work health and safety legislation has introduced industrial manslaughter to many jurisdictions across Australia, placing senior leaders at risk of prosecution. This paper examines whether mining construction managers (those involved in the building or maintenance of infrastructure at a mine site) have been adequately prepared, both ethically and practically, to understand how complex socio-technical systems could fail and the role human cognitive architecture plays in such systems. A case study is presented, which adequately highlights tragic outcomes from management inaction. The aim of this perspective article was to critically examine whether there is the need for greater health and safety education for construction managers within Western Australia’s mining construction sector. The analysis argues for the importance of embedding fundamental health and safety education in tertiary curricula and statutory training programs to promote and strengthen a positive safety culture and reduce high-severity incidents. The conclusion of the review is that there is a strong case for giving future mining construction leaders a better introduction to the fundamentals of workplace health and safety during tertiary education. By including work health and safety in their curricula, educational institutions can better prepare students for leadership roles in the industry. Full article

Problem-based learning (PBL) relies on the problem as the generative trigger for inquiry, collaboration, and assessment, yet school-based reports often provide limited guidance on how problems are actually designed. This PRISMA-informed review analyzed 24 PBL cases published in Korea Citation Index (KCI) journals (2020–2025) to characterize enacted problem design in Korean K–12 settings. Using a literature-grounded framework covering authenticity, cognitive demand, collaboration, and pedagogical alignment, five expert coders conducted calibration and consensus coding of 12 elements on a 0–3 rubric. The findings showed that Perspective Integration, Analysis Requirements, and Assessment Opportunities were most strongly represented, whereas Curriculum Integration and Cognitive Conflict were less frequently advanced. Correlation and triad analyses further indicated recurring design patterns centered on collaboration and authenticity, while cognitively destabilizing configurations were rare. These results suggest that Korean K–12 PBL tends to emphasize socially supported, contextually meaningful inquiry. By contrast, the rarely observed cognitive-demand triad suggests a tendency to avoid problems requiring strong conceptual destabilization and deep analysis. These findings identify context-bounded design patterns and offer practical guidance for designing PBL problems that better balance socio-cognitive support, conceptual challenge, and curricular coherence. Systemic interaction mechanisms exist in the impact of renewable energy investment on regional economic growth, yet most existing research adopts fragmented analytical perspectives. This study integrates behavioral variables—environmental cognition and risk perception, typically treated as exogenous moderators—as endogenous components within a socio-technical systems framework, examining investment effects and transmission mechanisms across economic, behavioral, and spatial dimensions based on data from 31 Chinese provinces from 2010 to 2022. Findings reveal that investment significantly promotes regional economic growth, with environmental cognition exerting moderating effects and spatial spillover effects being notably significant. Transmission pathways encompass industrial upgrading, technological innovation, green finance, and cognition enhancement, with effects exhibiting pronounced regional heterogeneity. The findings are consistent with the presence of non-additive interaction effects across subsystems, providing empirical foundations for formulating differentiated energy transition policies. Changes in microbial composition during early infancy by various factors (mode of delivery, nutritional practices, antibiotic usage, and environmental influences) have been correlated with observable variances in cognitive abilities, temperament, stress response, and the predisposition to neurodevelopmental disorders. Consequently, microbiota-targeted interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics are being explored as avenues to enrich beneficial microbial taxa, enhance short-chain fatty acid production, fortify mucosal immunity, and mitigate inflammatory responses during these critical periods. Preclinical research, primarily in experimental animal models, has demonstrated a causal link between microbiota composition and developmental processes such as myelination, synaptic plasticity, and socio-emotional behaviors, whereas human evidence remains largely associative and heterogeneous. A notable gap exists in the current literature, which typically centers on gastrointestinal, psychiatric, or preterm outcomes, without a focused investigation into neurodevelopmental assessments within the first three years. To bridge this gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials assessing the impact of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on neurodevelopment and behavior in infants aged 0–36 months. Our primary objective was to establish whether microbiota-targeted strategies confer discernible neurodevelopmental benefits, alongside elucidating the mechanisms underpinning the relationship between microbial modulation and early brain development. Despite extensive research on financial literacy and financial decision-making, the scholarly literature remains conceptually fragmented, particularly regarding how behavioral biases mediate or moderate the relationship between knowledge and financial behavior. The existing literature often focuses on financial literacy or behavioral biases in isolation, limiting a systematic understanding of their interaction. This study addresses this gap by conducting a bibliometric analysis of research at the intersection of financial literacy, behavioral finance, and decision-making. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we analyzed 267 peer-reviewed publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus over the period 2010–2025 using the Bibliometrix 5.2.1 R package and VOSviewer 1.6.20 for co-occurrence, thematic clustering, and trend analysis. The results identify three interconnected research clusters: (i) socio-demographic and educational determinants of financial literacy, (ii) cognitive and behavioral biases influencing financial decision processes, and (iii) applied investment decision contexts. Overconfidence and herding dominate the literature, whereas biases such as framing, mental accounting, and intertemporal inconsistency remain comparatively underexplored. The analysis further reveals a post-2022 surge in publications, increasing internationalization, and emerging integration of digital finance and artificial intelligence themes. By systematically mapping the intellectual structure of this research domain, this study clarifies theoretical fragmentation, identifies under-researched behavioral mechanisms, and provides an evidence-based framework to guide future interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research on how financial literacy translates into financial behavior. This study investigates the relationship between language, motor, and social–relational development in early childhood and the development of executive functions in a sample of 110 preschoolers (M = 57 months, SD = 9.8; 47.3% male, 52.7% female). Through the administration of the Preschool Observation of Development and Self-Regulation questionnaire to parents, information about motor, language, and socio-relational skills at 6–36 months and 37–72 months was collected for each participant. Executive functions were investigated by the administration of a neuropsychological battery. The scores obtained on these tests were summarized through confirmatory factor analysis in the two dimensions: working memory–cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control. Multiple regressions were performed to determine whether the development of certain motor, language or social–relational skills had an impact on the development of working memory, flexibility and inhibitory control observed at preschool. The results show that prior language skills, especially grammatical skills, are predictive factors for the development of working memory and cognitive flexibility at preschool. Additionally, some gross-motor skills at 6–36 months are significant predictors for the development of inhibitory control. These skills are therefore clinically important to prevent possible executive impairment in preschool children and to intercept early at-risk children. Full article

This study examines the impact of family multidimensional poverty on cognitive function among older adults in China using the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Filling a critical gap in the existing literature, we construct a multidimensional poverty index (MPI) based on the Alkire-Foster methodology to evaluate cognitive decline within the context of China’s post-poverty-eradication landscape. Utilizing quantile regression analysis, our findings demonstrate that multidimensional poverty exerts a significant, negative effect on cognitive function, which is more pronounced among individuals at lower cognitive quantiles, consistent with the cumulative disadvantage theory. Furthermore, we identify substantial urban–rural and regional disparities, revealing unique socio-economic inequalities. By linking multidimensional poverty to elderly cognitive health through psychosocial pathways, this study provides empirical evidence that reducing multidimensional deprivation among older adults is integral to achieving both SDG1 and SDG3 in China’s post-eradication context, demonstrating that income-based metrics alone are insufficient to capture the full burden of poverty on elderly cognitive health. Background/Objectives: With growing waves of migration, children speaking a home language different from the language of school literacy have become increasingly common in Western education systems. In this context, understanding and monitoring bilinguals’ reading development is crucial to inform both educational and clinical practices and ensure equitable services. The present study contributes to the literature by investigating learning patterns in single-word reading across primary school grades. Monolingual and bilingual children learning to read in an alphabetic orthography were examined. Methods: The sample consisted of 565 typically developing monolingual and bilingual primary school children from grades 1–5 (bilinguals = 162). Participants completed a computerised Lexical Decision task (LDT) recording accuracy and response times, and standardised tests of reading and cognition. A parental questionnaire was used to gather socio-demographic and linguistic information. Results: Response bias-corrected accuracy rates in the LDT revealed an increase in sensitivity across school years after correcting for potential confounds (SES, vocabulary, nonverbal intelligence). No significant effect of bilingualism was observed. Response times for correct responses also decreased consistently across grades after controlling for the same confounds. Although no significant main effect of bilingualism emerged, an interaction with grade revealed a greater decrease in response times for second-grade bilinguals compared to monolingual peers. Conclusions: Monolingual and bilingual children showed comparable sensitivity rates and reading times, suggesting similar decoding skill acquisition. However, an earlier decrease in response times for bilinguals points to a facilitatory effect in the early stages of reading development, consistent with a bilingual advantage during skill learning. This study investigated the developmental cascade from social–emotional competence (SEC) to early mathematical skills via executive function (EF), specifically examining the moderating role of math anxiety (MA) as a resource dampener and gender heterogeneity. Participants included 765 Chinese preschoolers (mean age = 61.08 months; range: 48–82 months). Results indicated that working memory was the most robust EF predictor of mathematical performance. While SEC facilitates EF as a foundational platform, MA functions as a resource dampener, disrupting the neurobiological efficiency of both social–emotional and cognitive resources. Crucially, multi-group analyses revealed gender-specific patterns: the developmental cascade was robust in boys but highly susceptible to anxiety interference in girls. These findings establish that early mathematical development is an inherently socio-emotional process. The results emphasize the urgency of early anxiety-reduction interventions, particularly for girls, to ensure that foundational developmental assets are successfully translated into mathematical achievement. In conditions of liquid modernity, marked by accelerated technological change, the virtualization of essential services, and the erosion of stable institutional support, digital participation in later life is less a matter of initial access than of continuously renegotiating engagement within unstable socio-technical environments. While established technology adoption models such as TAM, UTAUT, and STAM have provided robust explanations of cognitive and age-related determinants of adoption, they remain limited in accounting for the relational processes through which technological engagement is learned, stabilized, and sustained over time. This article advances a relational perspective on technology appropriation by foregrounding the role of warm experts—trusted informal supporters who mediate learning, interpretation, and adaptation in everyday contexts. Moving beyond dyadic understandings of assistance, the paper conceptualizes mediation as a distributed ecology of roles embedded within relational networks that both enable and constrain digital inclusion. Building on this perspective, the study proposes the Relational Technology Appropriation Model (RELTAM) as a general multi-level architecture integrating individual determinants, relational mediation processes, and network-level support configurations within a dynamic framework of appropriation. The Relational (Older Adult) Technology Appropriation Model (REL(OA)TAM) is introduced as a context-specific instantiation of this broader framework, calibrated to the distinctive conditions of later life. By incorporating temporal instability and mediation ecologies as structural components, REL(OA)TAM offers a socially grounded account of digital inclusion as an ongoing process of adaptive negotiation within the fluid and uncertain conditions of liquid modernity. This study employs a constructivist grounded theory approach based on 69 in-depth interviews conducted between March 2022 and December 2023 to examine socio-cognitive dynamics in Korea’s bottled water and household water purifier markets. The study addresses a gap in prior research by explaining how product meanings and stakeholder strategies co-evolve across adjacent “safe-water” markets under regulatory and sustainability pressures. Drawing on qualitative data from 69 stakeholders, including producers (n = 30), consumers (n = 19), and institutional experts (n = 20), we analyze how distrust, risk perception, and health consciousness reshape conceptual systems and market strategies. These shifts drive innovation across markets, including new technologies, service models, and branding strategies. The findings show that socio-cognitive stabilization arises through iterative interactions among institutional shocks, producer reinterpretation, and consumer adaptation. In the bottled water market, the meanings of “natural purity” became materially embedded in packaging, mineral labeling, and brand narratives. In the purifier sector, “technological reliability” was institutionalized through service-based maintenance systems and visible quality control technologies. These processes developed within asymmetric communicative environments shaped by corporate branding capacity and media amplification. This study refines socio-cognitive market theory by specifying boundary conditions under institutional distrust in developed economies. Although Republic of Korea possesses advanced drinking water infrastructure comparable to that of other developed economies, public confidence in tap water has periodically weakened following highly salient contamination incidents and regulatory transitions. This paradox provides a theoretically informative context for examining how product meanings and stakeholder behaviors mutually adapt over time. Although environmental impact metrics were not directly measured, the findings suggest that sustainability policies must address socio-cognitive trust dynamics alongside regulatory instruments such as plastic levies, certification schemes, and transparent risk communication. Sports have progressively incorporated technological advances, yet while the impact on performance and broadcasting is remarkable, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in sports refereeing appears residual. A closer examination of prior research suggests that this limited development reflects deeper conceptual patterns within the field. While existing research on AI in sports officiating has predominantly conceptualized the field under an accuracy-optimization paradigm (focusing on decision precision, visual attention patterns, referee fatigue, and performance enhancement), there is a systematic lack of theoretical and empirical work that frames officiating as a broader socio-technical ecosystem. In particular, the literature does not provide conceptual models addressing (i) AI-assisted risk prevention and athlete safety as a core officiating function, (ii) human–AI task redistribution in cognitively overloaded and hybrid evaluative environments (e.g., disciplines such as artistic gymnastics or bodybuilding, where technical execution and aesthetic judgment are simultaneously assessed), and (iii) the redefinition of the referee’s role when AI operates as an anticipatory or real-time alert system rather than merely as a post hoc verification tool. Thus, the gap is not only one of application but of knowledge production: the dominant paradigm optimizes decision accuracy, yet it leaves the question of how AI can transform refereeing responsibilities, cognitive load distribution, and safety governance within competitive ecosystems under-theorized. This exploratory study adopts a Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) perspective to contrast existing initiatives with the practical expectations of professional referees. The methodology comprises two pillars: a systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines and qualitative experimentation involving professional referees using focus groups and affinity diagrams techniques. From an initial total of 1251 records retrieved across five academic databases (2019–2025), 1122 articles were analyzed after applying strict inclusion/exclusion criteria. The findings provide preliminary support for our hypothesis of a significant underutilization gap, showing that research is concentrated on accuracy systems, while high-potential areas identified as critical by experts, such as athlete safety, represent only 0.6% of the analyzed literature. The study contributes a conceptual framework based on five categories established by experts, according to the identified use cases, providing guidance for future AI integration and interdisciplinary research in the sports officiating ecosystem. Based on the results, we point to future applications and lines of research aimed at integrating AI as a tool for sports refereeing. Full article

Large language model-based virtual patients (LLM-VPs) are an emerging simulation tool for health professions education, but their design and integration into curricula are not well characterized. This scoping review mapped how LLM-VPs are being used for simulated clinical learning across health professions. Following a protocol registered on OSF, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science to 11 April 2025, per PRISMA-ScR guidelines, and included 21 studies that used LLMs to generate virtual patients for simulated clinical encounters. Data were extracted on technical design, fidelity domains, curricular integration, human factors, and Technology Acceptance Model constructs, and synthesized narratively. Most studies (n = 11) were pilot or feasibility evaluations with small samples (median 21) and used GPT-based models with dynamic text chat. Integration was limited to 10 studies that operated as pilots, 7 as electives, and 3 as core curricular components. The outcomes focused on Level 2 learning (clinical reasoning and preclinical OSCE performance), with predominantly self-report assessments. No studies reported Level 3 or 4 outcomes. Fidelity was strongest in cognitive, socio-cultural, and emotional domains, and 11 studies reported hallucinations or inaccurate outputs. LLM-VPs appear feasible and well-received but remain early-stage, underscoring the need for fidelity-aligned design and more rigorous, longitudinal evaluations. Full article
