Wine and food tourism has increasingly embraced the principles of the circular economy and sustainability. During the bottle-fermented production of sparkling wine, yeast encapsulated in calcium alginate beads gradually loses viability. After the secondary alcoholic fermentation, these beads are usually discarded. This pilot-scale study investigates how the wasted beads can be valorised by incorporating them into vegan vinaigrettes. The vegan vinaigrettes were developed on a laboratory scale with distinct flavour profiles, all containing 3.5% (w/w) calcium alginate beads: mint (V-Air), seaweed (V-Water), spicy (V-Fire) and mushroom (V-Earth). Forty untrained panellists assessed the samples on a nine-point hedonic scale and with Just-About-Right (JAR) scale. Viscosity and colour were also measured in the final samples. Vf-Fire and Vf-Earth vinaigrettes stood out in terms of overall appreciation, particularly colour and consistency, with Vf-Earth receiving the highest average score (7.10 ± 1.58). The presence of alginate beads was well appreciated, with an average score of 6.26 ± 2.14. Across all formulations, the average pH decreased from 3.75 ± 0.01 to 3.37 ± 0.01. This pH reduction benefits food safety. These vegan vinaigrettes offer a sustainable and innovative alternative for reusing sparkling winemaking waste as a by-product, with strong potential for gastronomic appeal among wine or food tourists. This systematic literature review examines the scholarly discourse and research trends on the integration of Islamic principles with global sustainability goals in halal tourism, addressing research gaps in understanding how this growing market sector contributes to sustainable development. The study analyzes halal certification frameworks, evaluates government support mechanisms, and assesses the role of digital technologies in enhancing halal tourism operations and sustainability. Following the PRISMA methodology, we conducted a comprehensive search of the Scopus database using a structured three-component Boolean strategy that yielded 78 documents. After applying inclusion criteria (peer-reviewed publications from 2015 to 2025 addressing halal tourism and sustainability) and exclusion criteria (studies examining concepts in isolation or lacking theoretical contributions), 62 publications were systematically analyzed using bibliometric analysis and Structural Topic Modeling. The analysis identified three distinct research clusters: Sustainable Tourism and Development (51.72%), Halal Tourism and Entrepreneurship (37.93%), and Technology and Digitalization (17.24%). A significant temporal shift in research priorities was observed, with entrepreneurship studies declining while sustainability integration and technological applications gained momentum, particularly post-pandemic. This review develops an integrated conceptual framework connecting religious principles, sustainability imperatives, and technological innovation—three domains previously examined in isolation—through nine interrelated variables across three theoretical pillars: Halal Principles Integration, Sustainability Implementation, and Digital Transformation. The framework provides destination managers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs with a foundation for developing strategies that simultaneously satisfy religious requirements, achieve sustainability outcomes, and leverage digital innovations, advancing a more inclusive understanding of tourism that respects diverse cultural values while addressing global sustainability challenges. To improve the user perception of design decisions for living spaces in rural tourism-based elderly housing scientifically, a design approach is proposed from the perspective of user needs. This approach establishes an innovative model for the design of living spaces in rural tourism-based elderly housing by integrating the Kano model, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Firstly, the KJ method is used to extract the raw user needs, and after data cleaning, the Kano model is applied to categorize the attributes of these initial needs. Subsequently, the AHP method is used to construct a hierarchical model of user needs, enabling the calculation of the weight values of needs across different levels. User needs with higher weight values are integrated to create the design, and three design schemes are proposed for comparative analysis. Finally, the TOPSIS method is used to comprehensively evaluate the three design schemes derived from the user needs items identified by the Kano model and AHP method, thereby validating the feasibility of each design scheme. Experimental results show that the user needs-driven living space, constructed using the Kano model, AHP method, and TOPSIS method, transforms subjective concepts into specific design parameters through both qualitative and quantitative methods. This approach not only effectively addresses user needs but also provides solid theoretical support for the design of living spaces in rural tourism-based elderly housing. Full article

Augmented reality has hastened innovators to create things instantly. It has long been understood that the tourism industry is an industry of cultural exchange and visitation seeking experience, satisfaction, and pride. This study aims to increase behavior intention and delight mediating through experiential value co-creation using service-dominant logic theory. This study answers the focused research question by conducting surveys (n = 307) of members of Generation Y in Jakarta and Semarang city. The findings show that experiential value co-creation and delight directly and indirectly have a positively effect on behavior intention in virtual travel. This research offers a new concept, namely experiential value co-creation, to explain the connection between how tourists’ behavior in surfing the internet can influence their behavior intentions. This research certainly has managerial implications which are very useful for increasing behavioral intention, especially in the tourism sector. Tourist attraction managers must pay attention to content that discusses tourist destinations. Complete and accurate information is very useful in increasing the desire to visit tourist locations. Achieving decoupling between tourism economic growth and tourism carbon emissions is of paramount importance. This study innovatively integrates the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model—a tool for analyzing spatial heterogeneity—into the Tapio decoupling framework to examine the dynamic decoupling relationship between tourism growth and carbon emissions. It further investigates the driving factors behind decoupling evolution, their interactions, and precisely characterizes the mechanisms, directions, pathways, and intensities of these drivers. Key findings reveal an M-shaped fluctuation trend in tourism carbon emissions within the study area, with significant variations in emission shares across different tourism sectors and transportation modes. Spatially, carbon emissions exhibit heterogeneity and negative autocorrelation, where inter-regional disparities diminish while intra-regional disparities intensify. The tourism economic system in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) transitioned through weak decoupling, expansive negative decoupling, and strong decoupling states, eventually stabilizing at weak decoupling. Regional decoupling states varied markedly, suggesting that some areas require exploration of new low-carbon development paradigms. For sustainable tourism development, policy-makers should prioritize the decoupling relationship between tourism emissions and economic growth. Region-specific policies must be formulated to facilitate low-carbon transitions, promote industrial upgrading, and enhance inter-regional collaboration—ultimately advancing sustainable tourism under carbon neutrality goals. Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in driving sustainable change across coastal and marine environments. Artificial intelligence offers strong support for environmental decision-making by helping to process complex data, anticipate outcomes, and fine-tune day-to-day operations. In busy coastal zones such as the Mediterranean where tourism and boating place significant strain on marine ecosystems, AI can be an effective means for marinas to reduce their ecological impact without sacrificing economic viability. This research examines the contribution of artificial intelligence toward the development of environmental sustainability in marina management. It investigates how AI can potentially reconcile economic imperatives with ecological conservation, especially in high-traffic coastal areas. Through a focus on the impact of social and technological context, this study emphasizes the way in which local conditions constrain the design, deployment, and reach of AI systems. The marinas of Ibiza and Monaco are used as a comparative backdrop to depict these dynamics. In Monaco, efforts like the SEA Index® and predictive maintenance for superyachts contributed to a 28% drop in CO2 emissions between 2020 and 2025. In contrast, Ibiza focused on circular economy practices, reaching an 85% landfill diversion rate using solar power, AI-assisted waste systems, and targeted biodiversity conservation initiatives. This research organizes AI tools into three main categories: supervised learning, anomaly detection, and rule-based systems. Their effectiveness is assessed using statistical techniques, including t-test results contextualized with Cohen’s d to convey practical effect sizes. Regression R2 values are interpreted in light of real-world policy relevance, such as thresholds for energy audits or emissions certification. In addition to measuring technical outcomes, this study considers the ethical concerns, the role of local communities, and comparisons to global best practices. The findings highlight how artificial intelligence can meaningfully contribute to environmental conservation while also supporting sustainable economic development in maritime contexts. However, the analysis also reveals ongoing difficulties, particularly in areas such as ethical oversight, regulatory coherence, and the practical replication of successful initiatives across diverse regions. In response, this study outlines several practical steps forward: promoting AI-as-a-Service models to lower adoption barriers, piloting regulatory sandboxes within the EU to test innovative solutions safely, improving access to open-source platforms, and working toward common standards for the stewardship of marine environmental data. In response to increasing global sustainability demands, this study examines how green dynamic capabilities influence business performance in Bali Island’s tour and travel SMEs, with green service innovation as a mediating mechanism. Drawing on the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capability theory, the research adopts a quantitative approach using survey data from 387 SMEs and employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the relationships among green dynamic capabilities, green service innovation, and business performance. Findings reveal that green dynamic capabilities significantly enhance both green service innovation and business performance. Notably, green service innovation partially mediates this relationship, underscoring its pivotal role in transforming internal sustainability-oriented capabilities into tangible performance outcomes. The key contribution of this study lies in extending RBV by integrating green service innovation as a strategic conduit that links eco-centric capabilities to competitive advantage in a tourism SME context—a perspective that remains underexplored in emerging economies. Practically, the study provides actionable insights for SME owners and policymakers to prioritize innovation in service design and delivery as a pathway to sustainable tourism performance. The hospitality sector plays a crucial role in the tourism industry, undergoing a transformation driven by the intersection of service innovation and environmental practices. Competitiveness in this sector requires adaptation to market demands, with a focus on service innovation and environmental sustainability. This research aims to analyze the relationship between service innovation, environmental practices, and sustainable competitive advantage in Brazilian hospitality establishments. A quantitative and descriptive approach was applied to 300 individuals who stayed in Brazil. Data collection was conducted through an online questionnaire, utilizing the Snowball Sampling technique. The data collection was between 15 February and 20 June 2024. Data analysis was performed using Structural Equation Modeling, which enabled the examination of multiple variables and the verification of hypothetical relationships. The research results validated the hypotheses tested, demonstrating that service innovation and environmental practices have a positive influence on sustainable competitive advantage in hospitality establishments. An important finding in the research refers to the correlation between these constructs, which highlights the importance of integrated strategies that consider innovation and environmental sustainability as key elements for organizational success in the hospitality sector. With its theoretical contribution, this research developed a framework for analyzing the relationships between the constructs. Full article

This study identifies and refines the dimensions of cultural inheritance and innovative practices in industrial heritage-themed districts and develops a corresponding questionnaire scale. Based on the ABC model of attitudes, a conceptual model is constructed to examine the impact of cultural inheritance and innovation on tourist behavior, which is then empirically tested using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings reveal that the influence and mechanism of cultural inheritance and innovative practices on tourist behavior follow a continuous process in the sequence of cognition–affect–behavior tendency. All four dimensions of cultural inheritance and innovation exert a significant positive effect on tourist loyalty. Moreover, the affective component serves as a mediating factor within the chain reaction. This study constructs a new theoretical framework to explore how cultural inheritance and innovation jointly influence the formation of tourist loyalty and the underlying mechanisms, enriching the theoretical system of industrial heritage tourism and cultural management. It also provides practical theoretical support for district planning, design, and management. Full article

As the Metaverse continues to evolve as a transformative digital ecosystem, its environmental implications remain insufficiently examined within academic discourse. Despite growing interest in its technological and societal impacts, there is a lack of comprehensive evaluations that synthesize existing knowledge on its sustainability potential. This interdisciplinary narrative review addresses this gap by critically exploring how Metaverse technologies intersect with environmental sustainability across key sectors, including education, healthcare, tourism, e-commerce, manufacturing, and urban development. Employing a narrative review methodology informed by a systematic selection of scholarly and industry sources, the study consolidates current practices, emerging opportunities, and notable trade-offs. While the Metaverse presents promising avenues for reducing material consumption, optimizing urban planning through digital twins, and lowering emissions via virtual alternatives to physical travel, it also raises pressing environmental concerns, particularly related to high energy consumption, short hardware lifespans, and the rebound effects of intensified digital engagement. The findings suggest that environmental sustainability within the Metaverse is not inherent to its virtual nature but hinges on deliberate design, regulatory foresight, and the broader energy systems it depends on. This review offers timely insights for policymakers, technology developers, and sustainability advocates seeking to align immersive digital innovation with ecological responsibility and long-term planetary health. Seeking to advance mutual clustering of the tourism economy and cultural industries while safeguarding cultural sustainability in tourism, this paper delves into the patterns of co-development and the contributing forces across spatial and temporal dimensions in the Yellow River Basin. Using a combined spatial and temporal analytical lens, along with spatial autocorrelation testing and a spatial Durbin model embedded in a synergetic systems approach, the present study analyzes the evolutionary characteristics of the spatiotemporal pattern of the collaborative agglomeration of the Yellow River Basin’s tourism and cultural industries in 2011 and 2021 and the internal mechanism of its influencing factors. We then propose countermeasures and suggestions to boost the quality–efficiency synergy agglomeration of the basin’s tourism and cultural industries. The results showed the following: ① From 2011 to 2021, a positive overall spatial autocorrelation was noted in the basin’s tourism and cultural industries. Temporally, it presented a variation trend of “rise–fall–rise”, and spatially, it presented a distribution characteristic of “higher in the central and eastern regions versus in its western parts”. ② From 2011 to 2021, the local spatial autocorrelation (LSA) of the basin’s tourism and cultural industries remained at a low level. Moreover, significant differences were noted in the LSA among different regions. In spatial terms, the clustering intensity of tourism and cultural industries was stronger in the central and eastern parts of the basin versus in its western parts. ③ Influencing variables for tourism–culture collaborative agglomeration across the basin involve both temporal superposition effects and spatial radiation driving effects. The industrial economy, policies, and innovation exert enduring effects on the development and cross-regional spillover outcomes of the two collaborative agglomerations. Serving as a theoretical reference and policy resource, this study addresses how to promote the quality–efficiency synergy in the Yellow River Basin’s tourism and cultural industries while enhancing cultural sustainability in the tourism industry. Moreover, it can also provide experiences and references for other similar regions. Full article

Investigating the coevolution between ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being (HWB) holds significant implications for achieving the sustainable operation of human–environment systems. However, limited research has focused on ES-HWB interactions in ecotourism-dominated counties. To address this gap, this study takes Chun’an County in Zhejiang Province, China, as a case study, with the research objective of exploring the processes, patterns, and mechanisms of the coevolution between ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being (HWB) in ecotourism-dominated counties. By integrating multi-source heterogeneous data, including land use data, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and statistical records, and employing methods such as the dynamic equivalent factor method, the PLUS model, the coupling coordination degree model, and comprehensive evaluation, we analyzed the synergistic evolution of ES-HWB in Chun’an County from 2000 to 2020. The results indicate that (1) the ecosystem service value (ESV) fluctuated between 30.15 and 36.85 billion CNY, exhibiting a spatial aggregation pattern centered on the Qiandao Lake waterbody, with distance–decay characteristics. The PLUS model confirms ecological conservation policies optimize ES patterns. (2) The HWB index surged from 0.16 to 0.8, driven by tourism-led economic growth, infrastructure investment, and institutional innovation, facilitating a paradigm shift from low to high well-being at the county level. (3) The ES-HWB interaction evolved through three phases—disordered, antagonism, and coordination—revealing tourism as a key mediator driving coupled human–environment system sustainability via a pressure–adaptation–synergy transmission mechanism. This study not only advances the understanding of ES-HWB coevolution in ecotourism-dominated counties, but also provides a transferable methodological framework for sustainable development in similar regions. Based on a comprehensive review of the current research status of ecological compensation both domestically and internationally, combined with field survey data, this study delves into the issue of multi-stakeholder participation in the ecological compensation mechanisms of the Xin’an River Basin. This research reveals that the joint participation of multiple stakeholders is crucial to achieving the goals of ecological compensation in river basins. The government plays a significant role in macro-guidance, financial support, policy guarantees, supervision, and management. It promotes the comprehensive implementation of ecological environmental protection by formulating relevant laws and regulations, guiding the public to participate in ecological conservation, and supervising and punishing pollution behaviors. The public, serving as the main force, forms strong awareness and behavioral habits of ecological protection through active participation in environmental protection, monitoring, and feedback. As participants, enterprises contribute to industrial transformation and green development by improving resource utilization efficiency, reducing pollution emissions, promoting green industries, and participating in ecological restoration projects. Scientific research institutions, as technology enablers, have effectively enhanced governance efficiency through technological research and innovation, ecosystem value accounting to provide decision-making support, and public education. Social organizations, as facilitators, have injected vitality and innovation into watershed governance by extensively mobilizing social forces and building multi-party collaboration platforms. Communities, as supporters, have transformed ecological value into economic benefits by developing characteristic industries such as eco-agriculture and eco-tourism. Based on the above findings, further recommendations are proposed to mobilize the enthusiasm of upstream communities and encourage their participation in ecological compensation, promote the market-oriented operation of ecological compensation mechanisms, strengthen cross-regional cooperation to establish joint mechanisms, enhance supervision and evaluation, and establish a sound benefit-sharing mechanism. These recommendations provide theoretical support and practical references for ecological compensation worldwide. Full article

This study employs a mixed method. In-depth interviews and observational studies are among the data collection approaches used in qualitative research. The quantitative method measures the weight of respondents’ answers to the distributed questionnaire. The questionnaire, containing 82 items, was distributed to 202 tourists to collect their perceptions based on the 4A tourist components. The results indicate that tourists’ perceptions of attractions, accessibility, and ancillary services are generally positive. In contrast, perceptions of amenity services are less favorable. Using the scores from IFAS, EFAS, and the I-E matrix, the total weighted scores for IFAS and EFAS are 2.68 and 2.83, respectively. The appropriate strategy for BTV is one of aggressive growth in a position of strengths and opportunities. The study highlights key techniques, including the application of information technology in service and promotion, the strengthening of community and government roles, the development of infrastructure and facilities, the utilization of external resources, sustainable innovation, and the encouragement of local governments to issue regulations for halal tourism villages. By identifying drivers and barriers from an economic, environmental, social, and cultural perspective, the SWOT analysis results help design strategies that can make positive contributions to the development of sustainable, community-based halal tourism and digital information in the future. Nomadic heritage villages constitute significant material cultural heritage. Under China’s cultural revitalization and rural development strategies, these villages face spatial degradation driven by tourism and urbanization. Current research predominantly employs isolated analytical approaches—space syntax often overlooks social dynamics while social network analysis (SNA) overlooks physical interfaces—hindering the development of holistic solutions for socio-spatial resilience. This study proposes a multi-scale integrated assessment framework combining social network analysis (SNA) and space syntax to systematically evaluate public space structures in traditional nomadic villages of Xinjiang. The framework provides scientific evidence for optimizing public space design in these villages, facilitating harmonious coexistence between spatial functionality and cultural values. Focusing on three heritage villages—representing compact, linear, and dispersed morphologies—the research employs a hierarchical “village-street-node” analytical model to dissect spatial configurations and their socio-functional dynamics. Key findings include the following: Compact villages exhibit high central clustering but excessive concentration, necessitating strategies to enhance network resilience and peripheral connectivity. Linear villages demonstrate weak systemic linkages, requiring “segment-connection point supplementation” interventions to mitigate structural elongation. Dispersed villages maintain moderate network density but face challenges in visual integration and centrality, demanding targeted activation of key intersections to improve regional cohesion. By merging SNA’s social attributes with space syntax’s geometric precision, this framework bridges a methodological gap, offering comprehensive spatial optimization solutions. Practical recommendations include culturally embedded placemaking, adaptive reuse of transitional spaces, and thematic zoning to balance heritage conservation with tourism needs. Analyzing Xinjiang’s unique spatial–social interactions provides innovative insights for sustainable heritage village planning and replicable solutions for comparable global cases. Full article
