Vinasse a byproduct of ethanol manufacturing, is a challenge for ethanol producers which possesses a high organic content that presents a considerable environmental threat. This complicates its management and treatment utilizing standard technologies like anaerobic digestion. This residue contains a substantial quantity of dead and lysed yeast cells, which can function as a protein source for livestock’s nutritional needs. The application of multi-effect evaporation enhances the characteristics of this residue by increasing protein concentration, reducing volume, and minimizing water content. This study examines the impact of the five-effect evaporation procedure on vinasse waste, focusing on its rheological properties and the concentrations of proteins, amino acids, RNA, and DNA. This study aims to assess the thermal impacts linked to the evaporation process. The findings of the one-way statistical analysis demonstrate that the five evaporation effects are relevant in the utilization of waste as feed for livestock. The substance has a viscosity of 0.933 Pa s, comprising 6.3 g/100 g of crude protein, 4.08 g/100 g of amino acids, 0.1158 g/L of DNA, and 0.1031 g/L of RNA. Full article

Microalgae offer a sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment by simultaneously removing pollutants and producing biomass of potential value. This study evaluated five species—Haematococcus pluvialis, Chlorella vulgaris, Chlamydomonas sp., Anabaena variabilis, and Scenedesmus sp.—in three undiluted food and beverage industry effluents from Mexico: nejayote (alkaline wastewater generated during corn nixtamalization for tortilla production), tequila vinasses (from tequila distillation), and cheese whey (from cheese making). Strains were adapted through UV mutagenesis and gradual acclimatization to grow without freshwater dilution. Bioremediation efficiency was assessed via reductions in chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphates (TPO4). C. vulgaris achieved complete TN and TPO4 removal and 90.2% COD reduction in nejayote, while A. variabilis reached 81.7% COD and 79.3% TPO4 removal in tequila vinasses. In cheese whey, C. vulgaris removed 55.5% COD, 53.0% TN, and 35.3% TPO4. These results demonstrate the feasibility of microalgae-based systems for treating complex agro-industrial wastewaters, contributing to sustainable and circular wastewater management. Full article

The utilization of organic fertilizers for the cultivation of wild edible and medicinal plants offers agronomic and ecological benefits, given their suitability to low-input and sustainable production systems. Under such conditions, these species may also benefit from targeted foliar applications of micronutrients to enhance their nutritional quality. This study examined the effects of a vinasse-based organic fertilizer and conventional fertilization regime, in combination with foliar applications of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), on the biomass, leaf photochemistry, and plant stress-related responses of Sideritis cypria and Origanum dubium. In S. cypria, organic fertilization resulted in a similar yield compared to conventional fertilization, while O. dubium showed a significant decrease in yield when using organic fertilizers. The impact of spraying with Zn on S. cypria dry matter content was related to the availability of nutrients, particularly nitrogen, while in O. dubium Zn spraying induced a decrease in dry matter. The total phenols content and antioxidant activity of S. cypria were elevated by conventional fertilization and foliar application of Fe, while the combination of organic fertilization and foliar application of Fe and Zn reduced lipid peroxidation. In O. dubium, foliar application of Fe and Zn led to a reduction in total phenols content, antioxidant capacity, and hydrogen peroxide content under adequate nutrition. In general, foliar spraying with Zn tended to improve water use efficiency under specific fertilization practices on both species, while the positive effect of conventional fertilization on nutrient use efficiency still requires further validation. Ultimately, the efficiency of organic fertilization was related to the examined species, inducing variations in leaf chlorophyll content. In addition, foliar application of Fe and Zn affected the antioxidant capacity and mineral content of the examined species. Thus, appropriate fertilization management is vital to fully realize the specific benefits of foliar micronutrient addition. Full article

This work aims to assess the droplets produced by a novel evaporation process, proposed as an alternative for managing tequila vinasses, using a spectral camera with three spectral bands and a thermal camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). High-resolution satellite images with seven spectral bands complemented this characterization. The spectral characterization was conducted by comparing three experimental conditions: the background of the study area without droplets, the droplets generated from purified water, and the droplets produced from tequila vinasses. Two monitoring campaigns, conducted in November 2024 and January 2025, revealed that the tequila vinasse droplets exhibited a maximum influence radius of 16 m, primarily regulated by wind speed conditions (6–16 km/h). Thermal analysis identified the droplet plume as a zone with a lower temperature, creating a thermal contrast of up to 6.6 °C against the average background temperature of 36.6 °C. No significant difference was observed in the influence radius between the droplets generated from vinasse and those from potable water. Spectral analysis of the UAV and satellite images showed significant (p < 0.05) differences in reflectance when the droplets were present (e.g., the coastal blue band increased from an average of 14.43 to 95.59 when vinasse droplets were present). This suggests that the presence of chemical compounds altered light absorption and reflection. However, the instrument’s sensitivity limited the detection of organic compounds at concentrations below its detection limit. The monitoring data presented in this manuscript is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate the potential environmental impacts of the droplets emitted by this novel process. Full article

The linear economy model in the sugar agroindustry has generated multiple impacts due to the underutilization of by-products and reliance on fossil fuels. Through predictive modeling and anaerobic digestion, the circular bioeconomy of sugarcane biomass enables the generation of biogas and electricity in an environmentally sustainable manner. This theoretical-applied research proposes a predictive model to estimate the energy potential of by-products such as bagasse, vinasse, molasses, and filter cake, based on historical production data and validated technical coefficients. The model uses milled sugarcane as a baseline and projects its energy conversion under three scenarios through 2030. In its most favorable configuration, the model estimates energy production of up to 15.5 billion Nm3 of biogas in Cuba and 9.9 billion in Peru. The model’s architecture includes four residual biomass flows and bioenergy conversion factors applicable to electricity generation. It is validated using national statistical series from 2000 to 2018 and presents relative errors below 5%. Cuba, with a peak of over 13,000 GWh of electricity from bagasse, and Peru, with a stable output between 6500 and 7500 GWh, reflect the highest and lowest projected energy utilization, respectively. Bagasse accounts for over 60% of the total estimated energy contribution. This modeling tool is fundamental for advancing a transition toward a circular economy, as it helps mitigate environmental impacts, improve agroindustrial waste management, and guide sustainable policies in sugarcane-based contexts. Pig slurry (PS) and wine vinasse (WV) pose environmental risks if not properly managed. Their composition makes them suitable for anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD), enhancing biomethane production and improving organic matter degradation efficiency. This research applies an innovative Design of Experiments (DoE) approach—specifically the Box–Behnken design (BBD)—to systematically optimize the AcoD process, surpassing traditional single-factor methods by efficiently evaluating the interactions. Variables such as temperature (35 °C, 52.5 °C, 70 °C), substrate ratio (25PS:75WV, 50PS:50WV, 75PS:25WV) and pH (7, 7.5, 8) were tested using a Box–Behnken design which studied the correlations between the experimental data and the model. In fact, the results showed that temperature, ratio, and their interaction significantly influenced biomethane production, being the pH the factor with the least influence on the response. Optimal conditions—pH of 8, temperature of 35 °C and a 50:50 substrate ratio—achieved a biomethane yield of 487.94 CH4/gVS (Volatile Solids). These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the DoE methodology in maximizing biomethane production and represent a significant advancement in valorizing wastes from pig farms and wineries, promoting a circular and sustainable economy. The combination of techno-economic process modelling and life cycle assessment is an integrated methodology that addresses quantitative operational data, and evaluates the emissions associated with any process under development. In particular, the valorisation of waste streams within the context of the circular economy could be considered a valid and promising approach, especially regarding techno-economic and environmental indicators. This manuscript aims to evaluate the integral valorisation of apple pomace from the processing industry into bioethanol, and vinasses (a byproduct of the distillation process) into biogas and digestate as biofertiliser. In addition to biogas production, lagooning and composting were considered as strategies for vinasse management. After the conceptual design of the process options was completed, the environmental profile of bioethanol production was estimated across different scenarios. When biogas production was integrated to reduce the biorefinery’s energy demand, the carbon footprint was 1.13 kg CO2eq∙kg−1. This footprint increased to values around four when lagooning and composting were used as vinasse management strategies. Although the economic dimension posed a significant limitation due to high investment costs, the eco-efficiency analysis showed that the scenario of the co-production of bioethanol and biogas is the best alternative. Despite the promising results, further research is needed to explore the recovery of additional co-products to develop a high-potential strategy for apple pomace. Full article

From the vineyard to the bottle, the winemaking process generates a variety of by-products, such as vinasses, spent filter cakes, grape pomace, grape lees, and vine shoots. To avoid damaging the environment and to reduce economic impacts, the by-products and wastes must be handled, disposed of, or recycled properly. This review focuses on an environmentally friendly approach to the management and added value of winemaking by-products, such as grape pomace or grape marc, by using vermicomposting. Vermicompost is a well-known organic fertilizer with potential uses in soil bioremediation and the conservation of soil health. To achieve environmental neutral agriculture practices, vermicomposting is a promising tool for resilient and sustainable viticulture and winemaking. Vermicomposting is a simple, highly beneficial, and waste-free method of converting organic waste into compost with high agronomic value and a sustainable strategy in line with the principles of the circular economy. This study compared the behavior of the biomass in two fixed-film anaerobic reactors operated under equivalent organic loading rates but at different temperatures, i.e., 30 °C (RMM) and 55 °C (RMT). The reactors were fed with sugarcane vinasse and molasses (both fermented) in a simulation of sequential periods of season and off-season. The dynamics of biomass growth and retention, as well as the microbial composition, were assessed throughout 171 days of continuous operation, coupled with an additional 10-day test assessing the microbial activity in the bed region. Despite the different inoculum sources used (mesophilic granular vs. thermophilic flocculent sludge types), the biomass growth yield was identical (0.036–0.038 g VSS g−1COD) in both systems. The retention rates (higher in RMT) were regulated according to the initial amount of biomass provided in the inoculation, resulting in similar amounts of total retained biomass (46.8 vs. 43.3 g VSS in RMT and RMM) and biomass distribution patterns (30–35% in the feeding zone) at the end of the operation. Meanwhile, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis mediated by Methanothermobacter coupled to syntrophic acetate oxidation prevailed in RMT, while the Methanosaeta-mediated acetoclastic pathway occurred in RMM. The results show that different anaerobic consortia can behave similarly in quantitative terms when subjected to equivalent organic loads, regardless of the prevailing methane-producing pathway. The community grows and reaches a balance (or a given cell activity level) defined by the amount of substrate available for conversion. In other words, while the metabolic pathway may differ, the endpoint (the amount of biomass) remains the same if operational stability is maintained. Full article

This study mapped the bioenergy production from sugarcane vinasse according to the mesoregions of the State of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, assessing the magnitude of biogas-derived electricity and biomethane production and estimating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. SP holds 45% of the Brazilian ethanol-producing plants, in which 1.4 million m3 of carbon-rich vinasse are generated daily. The electricity generated from vinasse has the potential to fully supply the residential consumption (ca. 6.5 million inhabitants) in the main sugarcane-producing mesoregions of the state (Ribeirão Preto, São José do Rio Preto, Bauru, Araçatuba and Presidente Prudente). In another approach, biomethane could displace almost 3.5 billion liters of diesel, which represents a 26% abatement in the annual state diesel consumption. Energetically exploiting biogas is mandatory to prevent GHG-related drawbacks, as the eventual emission of methane produced under controlled conditions (261.2 × 106 kg-CO2eq d−1) is ca. 7-fold higher than the total emissions estimated for the entire ethanol production chain. Meanwhile, replacing diesel with biomethane can avoid the emission of 45.4 × 106 kg-CO2eq d−1. Implementing an efficient model of energy recovery from vinasse in SP has great potential to serve as a basis for expanding the utilization of this wastewater in Brazil. Full article

Vinasse is not only effectively used in pest control but also creates a conducive environment for the growth of antagonistic microorganisms. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of vinasse applied via soil for the management of root-knot nematodes in soybean culture. The experimental design was entirely random, in a factorial scheme (2 × 6), consisting of two species of nematodes, Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica, under vinasse application at five concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%) and one control (water), with five repetitions. Soybean plants Intacta cv. M-Soy 8644 IPRO were inoculated with 4000 eggs/juveniles of each species separately. At 60 days after the first application of vinasse, evaluations of parasitism and agronomic characteristics in soybean were performed. Stillage resulted in the highest average values for root volume and root fresh mass in plants inoculated with M. incognita, showing respective increases of 24.33% and 14.92% compared to plants inoculated with M. javanica. However, concentrations exceeding 60% had a detrimental effect on all agronomic variables of soybean. For parasitism, an interaction among the factors was observed, with a significant effect (p < 0.01) for most of the evaluated variables, except for the number of eggs in the soil. The concentration equivalent to 60% vinasse promoted a sharp reduction in parasitism for the two nematode species, making reproduction on plant roots unfeasible. Full article

The present work proposes the optimization of the co-digestion of vinasse, filter cake, and deacetylation liquor in a continuous reactor by adding iron(III) oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs), comparing the results with a previous reactor operation without NPs. Initially, tests were carried out in batches with different NP concentrations, resulting in 5 mg L−1 as the best concentration to be added in the continuous reactor along the increments of the applied organic load rate (OLR). Methane (CH4) production reached a maximum value of 2.8 ± 0.1 NLCH4 gVS−1 (normal liter methane per gram of volatile solids), and the organic matter removal reached 71 ± 0.9% in phase VI (OLR of 5.5 gVS L−1 day−1). This production was 90% higher than the reactor co-digestion operation without NPs. The anaerobic digestion (AD) development was stable with stable organic acid (OA) concentrations, indicating the predominance of the propionic acid route to produce CH4. The main methanogenic Archaea identified was Methanoculleus, indicating that the predominant metabolic route was that of acetate (SAO) coupled with hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. As we address important societal needs, the circular economy equips us with the means to jointly combat climate change and biodiversity loss, including the revaluation of waste. The wine-making process is a huge generator of waste, creating problems for manufacturers every year; therefore, an appropriate management and valorisation of winery wastes are crucial, even if it is difficult. This results from the hardship of disposing of grape marc, which is considered a pollutant for the environment. In the past, the simplest option for this waste disposal was the payment of a fee around EUR 3000, which recently increased up to EUR 30,000–40,000. Several environmentally friendly technologies have been proposed for the recovery of cellar waste. Fermentation of grape residue, pruning, or wine-making lees have been reported to yield lactic acid, surfactants, xylitol, ethanol, and other compounds. In addition, grape pulp and seeds are rich in phenolic compounds, which have antioxidant properties, and tartaric acid from vinasse can be extracted and marketed. Additionally, complex phenol mixtures, such as those found in wine residues (seeds, bark, stems, or leaves), are effective as chemotherapeutic agents and can be used in medicine. In this review, the potential of using wine-making by-products, extracts, and their constituent parts as raw materials for adsorbents, biopolymers, natural reinforcing fillers, and sustainable energy production will be a key point of discussion. An overview on how wine producers, based on wine and wastes chemistry, can implement the circular economy as an alternative to the conventional linear economy (make, use, dispose) will be provided. Environmental Sustainability of Waste Circulation Models for Sugarcane Biorefinery System in Thailand

Sugarcane leaves and trash burning during harvesting, and vinasse management, are major challenges of the Thai sugarcane industry. Identification of the appropriate valorization pathways for both the biomass waste streams using the sugarcane biorefinery concept is necessary. This study aims to assess the environmental sustainability of five CE models, including (1) sugarcane trash for electricity, (2) sugarcane trash to biochar, (3) sugarcane trash as a soil conditioner, (4) vinasse as a bio-fertilizer, and (5) vinasse for power generation. Life cycle assessment has been conducted using the ReCiPE midpoint impact assessment method. The results revealed that all waste utilization scenarios can help reduce the environmental impacts compared to the base case. The utilization of sugarcane leaves and trash for electricity generation brings about the lowest environmental impacts due to the environmental credits from the substitution of Thai grid electricity. The utilization of sugarcane leaves can reduce impacts on climate change, terrestrial acidification, and ozone formation by about 20–104%, 43–61%, and 12–54%. Recycling vinasse as bio-fertilizer and for biogas production for electricity generation can reduce climate change impact by about 28–29%. There is a significant improvement of the avoidance of pre-harvesting burning of sugarcane in the Thai sugar industry, which has led to the big potential of sugarcane leaves biomass utilization. Recommendations to enhance the efficiency of using sugarcane leaves and vinasse are discussed. The integrated waste circulation scenarios on cane leaves and vinasses in the sugar-electricity-ethanol biorefinery shows advancement in the bio-circular-green economy (BCG) aspects for enhancing the environmental sustainability of the Thai sugarcane industry. Vinasse management in biorefineries bears a burden for sugarcane industries. Despite its high potassium-related fertilizer potential, a series of negative environmental impacts is expected to occur in long-term soil applications of vinasse through fertirrigation. Conversely, a high biodegradable organic content characterizes vinasse as a potential substrate for bioresource and bioenergy recovery from numerous (bio)technological perspectives. This review presents the alternative approaches proposed for sugarcane vinasse management in Brazil, with special attention dedicated to the role of anaerobic digestion as the core conversion step. The suitability of applying phase separation, i.e., the separation of fermentation from methanogenesis in sequential reactors, is discussed in detail. Laboratory and full-scale experiences were considered to discuss the energetic potential of sugarcane vinasse through biogas generation. With a national installed capacity of up to 1603 MW, energy from vinasse could replace half of the coal-derived electricity in Brazil. Meanwhile, investing in vinasse fermentation to obtain soluble organic metabolites could provide more than 10 g L−1 of (iso)butyrate. This is the first review addressing the potential use of sugarcane vinasse in anaerobic biorefineries that discusses applications far beyond conventional biogas production, and encourages the rational use of vinasse as a raw material for bioprocesses, either in short- or long-term scenarios.
