Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the landscape of healthcare, particularly in hospitals, where it is enhancing diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. As AI continues to evolve, its applications in hospitals are expanding beyond initial expectations, offering new solutions to long-standing challenges in medicine. We invite researchers, clinicians, and industry experts to contribute to our upcoming Special Issue focused on "AI in Hospitals: Present and Future". This Special Issue aims to explore how AI is currently integrated into hospital settings and what the future holds for AI-driven innovations in healthcare.

However, with these exciting prospects come challenges that must be addressed. Ethical concerns surrounding AI in healthcare, including issues of data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential for job displacement, are critical topics for ongoing discussion. Ensuring that AI systems are transparent, secure, and designed to support rather than replace human clinicians will be key to their successful integration into hospital settings.

We encourage authors to submit papers that explore the various aspects of AI in hospitals, from current applications to future innovations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AI in medical imaging and diagnostics;
  • Predictive analytics in hospital operations;
  • Robotic surgery and automation in hospitals;
  • AI in personalized medicine;
  • Ethical implications of AI in healthcare;
  • Future trends and innovations in AI-driven hospital care.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of AI's role in shaping the future of hospitals. We seek submissions that are evidence-based, with a strong emphasis on the practical implications of AI technologies in healthcare. Case studies, original research, and review articles are all welcome to be submitted.

Please submit your papers, following the submission guidelines outlined on our website. We look forward to your contributions to this important and timely discussion on the future of AI in hospitals.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Hospitals is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in enhancing patient safety within hospital settings. This perspective explores the various applications of AI in improving patient outcomes, including early warning systems, predictive analytics, process automation, and personalized treatment. We also highlight the economic benefits associated with AI implementation, such as cost savings through reduced adverse events and improved operational efficiency. Moreover, the perspective addresses how AI can enhance pharmacological treatments, optimize diagnostic testing, and mitigate hospital-acquired infections. Despite the promising advancements, challenges related to data quality, ethical concerns, and clinical integration remain. Future research directions are proposed to address these challenges and harness the full potential of AI in healthcare. Full article
