Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder that manifests as deteriorating cognitive function and memory decline. While the etiology of AD is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition, environmental factors and lifestyle choices, a significant body of research has implicated vascular dysfunction as a critical component in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

The exploration of vascular dysfunction in AD is essential for several compelling reasons. First, it provides a novel lens through which to view the disease's multifaceted mechanisms, challenging and expanding our understanding. Second, it illuminates the potential avenues for therapeutic intervention, with the tantalizing possibility that drugs targeting vascular health could improve or stabilize cognitive function in AD patients. Lastly, addressing vascular health may play a preventive role against AD, especially considering the overlapping risk factors that contribute to both vascular and cognitive decline.

This Special Issue will focus on the concept of vascular dysfunction in the context of AD, providing an overview of its role, the mechanisms involved and the implications for understanding and treating this complex condition.
